Runaway Lyrics

Runaway
  • Robin Beck explained the son's meaning in track-by-track comments: "This is a passionate song about looking at what's true and feeling the pain that can sometimes come to you when you face it. It kind of leaves you feeling like the world would be a better place if people could just stop and look at what is happening around them and the people that they love." Runaway Lyrics

    Hmhmhmhm ah ah
    Hmhmhmhm ah ah
    Hmhmhmhm ah ah
    Hmhmhmhm ah ah

I've known it for a long time
Daddy wakes up to a drink at night
    Disappearing all night
I don’t wanna know where he's been lying
I know what I wanna do
    I wanna Runaway
    Runaway with you
Gonna grab clothes, socks, in the morning, go

    "How long you leaving?"
"Well Dad just don’t expect me back this evening.
Oh it could take a bit of time to heal this"
    It’s been a long day
Almost out of the wrong way but
I love him from the skin to my bones, ah
But I don’t wanna miss home, ah
There’s nothing to save and he knows, ah
I’ll just runaway in the overnight

I’ve never seen my dad cry
Cold as stone, and the kitchen lie
I tell you it's about time
But I was raised to keep quiet
And this is what I’m gonna do
Gonna runaway, gonna make that move
Gonna grab clothes, and when it’s morning, go

    "How long you leaving?"
"Well Dad just don’t expect me back this evening.
Oh it could take a bit of time to heal this"
    It’s been a long day
Almost out of the wrong way but
I love him from the skin to my bones, ah
But I don’t wanna miss home, ah
There’s nothing to save and he knows, ah
I’ll just runaway in the overnight

Back pack, and a flat cap, turned to the back
    'Cause I packed my clothes
My dad wasn’t in with that plan too bit tired and turns to show up
I don’t wanna live this way
Gonna take my things and go
If things change in a matter of days
Could be persuaded to hold up
    And mama was the same
    None of us the same
To get the good nose up
    I don’t wanna runaway
And one of these days I might just show that
Put my home in a suitcase
Tie both shoelaces, and hold that
Things change, but for now I leave town with a backpack on my shoulder

I love him from the skin to my bones, ah
But I don’t wanna miss home, ah
There’s nothing to save and he knows, ah
I’ll just runaway in the overnight

    Runaway
  • This sassy Soul number is one of two tracks on x produced by Pharrell Williams (the other is the lead single "Sing.") Sheeran explained during a Spotify track-by-track how he ended up working with the hitmaking producer.

"Originally he tweeted 'This Angels To Fly song is great' a while ago," he said, "and then at the Grammys, I don't think he knew what I looked like, so I just went up to him and said, 'I'm a massive fan, I just wanted to say that's my tune!', and then we swapped numbers."

  • This is about a guy whose girl leaves him, and he is left to wonder what went wrong. A lot of Shannon's songs were about broken relationships. He once said he wrote the words to this about himself because he was forever running away from relationships.
  • Shannon and his keyboard player, Max Crook, came up with this while they were playing a club in their hometown of Battle Creek, Michigan. Crook played a keyboard called a "Musitron" on the song. (thanks, Jeff - Boston, MA)
  • Del Shannon (from 1000 UK #1 Hits by Jon Kutner and Spencer Leigh): "We were on stage and Max (Crook) hit an A minor and a G and I said, 'Max, play that again, it's a great change.'" The drummer, Dick Parker, followed them and after 15 minutes, the manager of the club shouted, 'Knock it off, play something else.'" The next day Shannon wrote some lyrics: "That night I went back to the club and I told Max to play an instrumental on his musitron for the middle part, and when he played that solo, we had 'Runaway.'"
  • In the UK, this was the biggest-selling single of 1961. (thanks, Edward Pearce - Ashford, Kent, England, for above 2)
  • Shannon re-recorded this for the Michael Mann TV series Crime Story, which ran from 1986-1988.
  • This was Shannon's biggest hit. His career trailed off a few years later, and he killed himself in 1990.
  • Tom Petty makes reference to this in "Runnin' Down A Dream." The line is, "It was a beautiful day, me and Del were singing, a little runaway."
  • This was used in the movie American Graffiti, a film that used many 1950s and '60s American pop, rock and doo-wop songs to create a jukebox-style soundtrack. As the film is set in 1962 ('Where Were You in '62?' was the tagline for the film), Shannon's "Runaway" is an appropriate period song for the film.
  • The famous musitron bridge was used pretty much note for note in the instrumental bridge to the 1982 song "Goodbye To You" by Scandal (with lead singer Patty Smyth). (thanks, Caren - Detroit area, MI)
  • The song has been covered many times. Queen and Paul Rodgers produced a version during The Cosmos Rocks sessions, with Brian May playing the musitron bridge solo section on guitar in his distinctive style. The song was an iTunes exclusive bonus track when the album was released in 2008.

    Runaway Lyrics

On the street where you live girls talk about their social lives
They're made of lipstick, plastic and paint
A touch of sable in their eyes

All your life all you asked
When is your Daddy gonna talk to you
But we're living in another world
Tryin' to get your message through

No one heard a single word you said
They should have seen it in your eyes
What was going around your head

    [Chorus:]
    Oh, she's a little Runaway
    Daddy's girl learned fast
All those things he couldn't say
    Ooh, she's a little runaway

    A different line every night
    Guaranteed to blow your mind
See you out on the streets
Call me for a wild time
    So you sit home alone
'Cause there's nothing left that you can do
There's only pictures hung in the shadows
Left there to look at you

You know she likes the lights
At night on the neon Broadway signs
    And she don't really mind
Its only love she hoped to find

    [Chorus]

No one heard a single word you said
They should have seen it in your eyes
What was going on your head

    [Chorus]

  • This was the first hit for Bon Jovi. Jon Bon Jovi wrote it in 1982 with early collaborator George Karak, and it was popular in the band's home state of New Jersey. Despite the success of this song, the band continued to struggle. They were a popular live act, but didn't make much money until they released Slippery When Wet two years later.
  • Jon Bon Jovi recorded this with studio musicians because he didn't have a band yet. The song broke nationally and Jon put the band together soon after.
  • This gained popularity when it was included on a compilation album of unsigned acts released by New Jersey radio station WDHA. Long Island radio station WAPP also put it on an annual CD of local bands.
  • Dave "the snake" Sabo played guitar on this. He went on to be the lead guitarist for the band Skid Row.
  • In a 1986 interview with Spin magazine, Jon Bon Jovi had some harsh words for this video. He said: "I hate videos. If you wanted to torture me you'd tie me down and force me to watch our first five videos. Five times you're chump before you learn what you're doing. The first time we'd just made a record and we were all excited and some a--hole decides we're going to make a video for 'Runaway.' So instead of making it about what the song's about, he decides to put a concept to it with his little niece in it. It's the worst piece of s--t I ever saw in my life. There's a girl with like fire coming out of her eyes. They dressed the band. Richie's wearing a jumpsuit and shoes that are three sizes too big. They kept squirting us down with this greasy solution to make it look like we were sweating. We all look like assholes."
  • A live version was used as the B-side of "Lay Your Hands On Me" in 1989.
  • Before performing this in 2003, Jon Bon Jovi introduced it by saying, "If you see this song down at the beach, buy it a drink - it's finally old enough."
  • Session musician Hugh McDonald played bass on this song. He played on Bon Jovi's early albums and replaced Alec John Such as Bon Jovi's bass player in 1994, although he is not considered an official member of the band. (thanks, Lee-Ann - Perth, Australia)
