The first single from Ed Sheeran's x album, this was premiered on Zane Lowe's show on BBC Radio 1 on April 7, 2014. "The reason I chose this song to be the first single is, I think if I put out an acoustic ballad first, everyone would be like 'ehh, it's alright,'" Sheeran told Lowe. "But with this, you get people who are either going to love it or going to hate it, but at least they're going to be talking about it."

This features Pharrell Williams, who also co-produced the song with Sheeran. It was the first time the English singer-songwriter had worked with a pre-existing track. However, it almost didn't happen. Williams recalled to Billboard magazine that when he played Sheeran a demo, "He was like, 'Nah, I love it, but it's not for me.' And I said, 'Just give me a shot. Pick up your guitar and strum along with it for a little bit, and see what happens.'"

"So after figuring out the chords that I had laid down," he continued, "in between jokes and people coming in with coffee, he kept playing it, and he looked up at me, like, 'S--t, is this really happening?' as I'm looking at him with an 'I told you so' smile."

The song owes a lot to Justin Timberlake. "It was pretty close to a direct inspiration," Sheeran told Billboard. "I love Justified and FutureSex/LoveSounds, so I took inspiration from those."

The unconventional x album title is actually pronounced 'multiply.'

The song charts the beginning of a tequila-laced liason with a girl that Sheeran met in Las Vegas in the summer of 2013. The experience eventually proved to be traumatic. He explained to Q magazine. "A totally f--ked up situation, which definitely left me tainted."

Commenting on his rapping and falsetto singing on the track, Sheeran told Ryan Seacrest: "I feel like I was veering off in one direction with that song. [It was] a very R&B led song and I wanted to pull it back and make it English so that's why I put the rap in it."

The song's music video was shot on location in LA and directed by Emil Nava, who worked on several clips from Sheeran's + album, including "You Need Me," "Lego House" and "Give Me Love."

The clip finds a Muppet look-a-like of Ed engaging in a debauched night out. The puppet stumbles into the human Ed and Pharrell Williams at the shoot for "Sing," and kidnaps the duo. Sheeran explained to MTV News: "The concept is The Muppets going out on a night out with a bunch of Korean business men who sing karaoke and then kidnapping me and Pharrell and taking us to that karaoke bar. Oh, and there's also a bunch of strippers in it. It's really weird, really weird, I don't know what I was on."

Speaking during an interview with Mix 104.1/Boston Sheeran revealed the puppet originally got into even more R-rated situations. "Unless you're into heavy, heavy drugs and strippers, you don't want to hang out with him," he said of his muppet double. "We cut that out of the video."

"The director went off on one [cut] and the original video is just [the puppet] in a strip club doing coke off strippers," Sheeran continued. And we're looking at the director being like, 'You know this is meant for TV, right?' You don't really want to hang out with him."

Sheeran told Live From MTV that a night of debauchery with PSY was the inspiration for the clip. "Basically the "Sing" video is based on a night out I had with him, and loads of his Korean mates," he said. "I went out on this night out with Psy and everyone was wearing a Psy mask in a Korean restaurant and they were all Korean and all wearing a Psy mask and I didn't know which one was Psy, I had no clue."

"I eventually found out who Psy was and he's just a monster when it comes to…," Sheeran added. "There's this Korean drink called Soju and so anyway I had this night out and that's what inspired the 'Sing' video with all the dancing and karaoke and stuff."

This was Sheeran's first ever UK #1 single as a performer. (He penned One Direction's 2012 chart-topper "Little Things").

"Don't" was set to be the the lead single from Sheeran's x album until Pharrell Williams requested that "Sing" should the first song released from the project, Sheeran quipped during the MTV documentary series Nine Days and Nights, "I swear Pharrell's got a foresight! … That hat or something!"

Sheeran recalled the story of the song during a Spotify track-by-track: "'Sing' was from my first session with him, and when you work with Pharrell, he tends to push you: he wants you to do the best thing possible. So you don't necessarily go for the first thing he plays you."

"It must have been on the seventeenth thing that he played me, and I had just dismissed everything," he continued. "I just didn't really get it. I don't really get jazz chords and Pharrell's very jazzy! He played me the beat, and I instantly dismissed it, it's not for me. OK, fair enough, move on, but I had a guitar in my hand, and I started playing that riff and he just looked at me and said, 'Do you know what you're doing, man?' I was like, 'No!', and then he puts back on the song and I said, 'Oh, OK, but I still don't want to do it', but just said, 'Man, just try it, it's not going to kill you to try it!'' So he went off ' he has three different studios in his building and has three different sessions going on at any one time - and I wrote the top line. He came back in, we pieced it all together."

"I wrote probably seven different verses and three different choruses and then we just picked the best ones and stuck them together," Sheeran concluded.

The second week of the release of x coincided with the incorporation of audio streams into the singles chart. Enough fans chose to stream the individual tracks that the 12 songs from the standard edition of the record occupied positions 4, 17, 25, 38, 45, 46, 49, 57, 59, 60, 62 and 82 on the tally. This meant that Sheeran become the first ever artist to see every one of the tracks from an album reach the Top 100 single chart concurrently. A couple of bonus tracks from the deluxe edition of x also reached the Top 100 the same week, meaning Sheeran had 14 songs in total on the chart.

X was the fifth single-character title to top Billboard's album chart. The previous four were:

This angsty breakup tune is about an ex, and Sheeran doesn't hold back with how he feels about her. "The story in 'Don't' is 100 percent true," Sheeran told Billboard magazine. "I could have gotten nastier - there was more s--t that I didn't put in. I was seeing someone for a bit of time, and then they ended up physically involved with one of my friends in the same hotel that we were staying in, while I was downstairs. And I feel like: Treat people how you want to be treated."

Speaking with MTV News, Sheeran refused to name the mystery person that the song is directed at, but is sure they will know who they are. "I've always been the sweet, innocent, 'Oh my God, he's English!' kind of thing, so having a bit of bite," he told MTV News, "I don't know how that's going to go down, but based on the reaction of people that have heard it, I think it will go down just fine."

Fans have speculated that the song could be about Ellie Goulding. Sheeran dated the "Burn" singer during the summer of 2013. She was rumored to have been seen kissing One Direction's Niall Horan at the V Festival around the same time.

Some of the speculation that Goulding is the subject of the song was because of the lyrics, "We make money the same way. Four cities, two planes the same day," and "You were looking for a lover to burn." Not only does Sheeran allude to the pair having the same career, but he also includes the word "burn," the title of Goulding's hit single.

Littering the lyrics with possible clues is a hallmark of Sheeran's friend Taylor Swift. He confirmed to Rolling Stone that the Country-Pop princess is not the subject of the song. "It's 100 percent not about Taylor," he said. "Taylor's one of these people that if you piss her off and she writes a song about you, it's not good news for you. I've never dated Taylor. I've dated a few singers, though."

Sheeran did play the song for Swift after writing it. He said: "She was just like, 'Whatever happens, ever, between us as friends, I never want to piss you off that much.'"

The song was co-produced by Benny Blanco, who has worked on hits from such pop artists as Katy Perry and Maroon 5. and production legend Rick Rubin (Johnny Cash, Run-DMC, Red Hot Chili Peppers), who is known for his naturalistic approach. "I loved elements of both," Sheeran told Billboard, "and I knew that together they could make something really super-powered, between Benny's pop sensibility and Rick's raw, earthy, gravelly coolness. So Benny went to LA and sat with Rick."

This was set to be the lead single from Sheeran's x album until early March 2014, when it was decided that "Sing" would be the first song to be released from the project. With a chorus hinged on the lyric "Don't f---- with my love." the change of mind was most likely prompted by a wish to give Sheeran's young fans something less sweary as a first release.

Also Sheeran was struggling with coming up with a clean radio edit. "I tried other words, I tried 'mess,' I tried 'funk,' lots of other things, but none of them worked," he laughed to MTV News. "But I'm definitely giving radio an edit they can play, because I'd be mental not to."

Sheeran debuted the song on the April 12, 2014 episode of Saturday Night Live. He also performed "Sing" on the same show.

Ed explained the story of the song during an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show. "With that song... I'm a carefree, happy guy and I feel like everyone goes through things that annoy them and they get angry, and I feel the way I get my anger out is to write songs," he explained. "And that song was literally, I felt something, I put it down and I felt a lot better afterwards."

"I wasn't going to put it on the record and then people kept telling me it was an alright song, 'cause it is a good song, so it ended up on the record," Sheeran added. "But yeah, that one's a bit personal."

The song has a very strong vocal hook: the "ahhh lite a lalala" (sp.) that opens the track and plays throughout. This nonsensical utterance is a key musical element, filling the space between key moments in the song. Since it's not comprised of real words, it's quite versatile, allowing the listener to imagine what could be said at these moments.

By putting this vocal in the intro, it establishes the sound, which then is used to tie the whole thing together. Other songs that put their vocal hooks upfront include "Habits (Stay High)" by Tove Lo and "Uptown Funk" by Mark Ronson.

Sheeran told The Daily Telegraph that he forewarned the woman in question. "I just said, 'just so you know, there is a song.' And they said, 'expected that.' 'Cause of the situation. You know, I didn't lie at all. It's 100 per cent true," he explained.

"I actually shied away from some of it," Sheeran added. "But for me in my head, that song is enough getting even. And the fact that it will stay anonymous, is good for me. I've written a song about it and I've leveled the playing field."

It was Benny Blanco who persuaded Sheeran to record the tune for x. "I wrote the song just to get it out of my system," he told Digital Spy . "I wrote it as a sort of therapeutic thing and left it, but then Benny kept ringing me up like, 'Yo, I'm just in the studio with so-and-so' - then naming some big name - 'they really f--k with the track. You need to do something with it.' I was like, 'I might, I might'. I had so many people from all angles telling me I should do something with it, so it ended up on the record."

Prior to the release of x, all swearing was cut from the album, which meant this song had to be heavily edited. Sheeran tweeted: "My whole album is clean, I took all of the explicit lyrics out after a taxi driver convinced me to do it for his daughter. That's the truth."

Speaking with Capital FM, Sheeran said that he quickly moved on from the episode recounted on this song, explaining: "With that track, I only felt that way for a week, and then I made my peace with it and got on with it."

"It just happened that that song was alright and I wanted to put it on the album," he continued. "But I don't have any bitterness towards that situation at all. I literally got over it within the week and the song just stuck around."

Asked by Billboard magazine what sound he was after with this song, Sheeran replied: "It was me trying to make a sort of '90s hip-hop jam in the sense of telling a story. So, how hip-hop tends to work, you have three verses: The first verse is the set-up, the second explains the situation, and the third is the outcome, with a chorus in between each."

This soundtracked a commercial for Beats By Dre. The ad shows Sheeran wearing Solo 2 headphones while constructing the song in a hotel room.

Sheeran started writing for his sophomore album x in 2011, before the release of +. This minimalistic tune was the first song he came up with. He initially released an acoustic version on May 2, 2014 on his YouTube channel.

Sheeran wrote this for Alice, who was his girlfriend for several years when they were teenagers. She is the subject of many of the tracks on + and the pair eventually broke up amicably. This was the last song Sheeran wrote for her and it finds the singer saying to his former muse that despite the ending of their romantic relationship he hopes they'll still remain friends.

Sheeran wrote this in his dressing room on a guitar made out of a whiskey barrel whilst on tour in Perth, Australia in 2011.

Afire Love

Sheeran wrote this song about his grandfather, an Irish Catholic who suffered from Alzheimer's for 20 years before finally passing away in 2013. He began penning it a fortnight before his granddad died, completing the tune at his funeral.

Sheeran previously paid tribute to his late grandfather at the 2014 Grammy Awards when he wore his grandfather's tie with his Gucci suit.

The guitar-driven song finds Sheeran singing about a drug experience. It was one of three tracks on x that the English singer worked on with American producer Rick Rubin (the others were "Don't" and "Tenerife Sea.")

Sheeran explained during the Live From MTV Presents the Ed Sheeran After Show how Rick Rubin helped him focus on the album process. "I think before then the album was good, but it was very much, 'Here's a Pharrell song and it really sounds like a Pharrell song,' and 'Here's an Ed song and it really sounds like an Ed song,' and 'Here's a West Coast hip-hop song that sounds like Benny Blanco' - it was all different songs," he explained. "And I think what the session with Rick did [was] it got me focused on an album process rather than just songs and it tied everything together."

Sheeran explained during a Spotify track-by-track that the song was written after an experience taking ecstasy in Ibiza, and it's basically about all the feelings that he got from that time. "It was weird," he said, "because I haven't taken it since, it was literally just a one-time thing."

"It was a wedding, and I was having a mojito, and my mate was like, 'Do you want to try it, it tastes really bad if you put it in your mouth but I'll just put it in your drink and it'll be fine'. It was MDMA and I fell in love with a beanbag," Sheeran added. "I literally got home and bought six beanbags! During it all I felt a lot of things: I felt anxiety, I felt love, I felt warm, I felt a bit weird. And afterwards, you spend all day just thinking about what you've been through. So, I've only done it once and I've told my mum and dad about it."

Sheeran wrote this with Johnny McDaid and Gary Lightbody of Snow Patrol. The singer-songwriter supported Snow Patrol on the North American leg of the band's Fallen Empires Tour in 2012 and he later dropped a Snow Patrol reference in his Fault In Our Stars soundtrack song, "All of the Stars." ("They're playing 'Chasing Cars' and I thought of us.")

The other songwriters were Rudimental. Sheeran performed the song with Rudimental during the English band's set at Glastonbury Festival on June 27, 2014.

Sheeran re-worked the song for its single release so that it features Rudimental. The accompanying video was directed by Emil Nava and features Ray Liotta. The Goodfellas actor portrays an aging, formerly famous heavy metal frontman in the fictitious group Black Glove, whose rock star lifestyle is finally taking its toll. Nava also did Sheeran's videos for "You Need Me" and "Give Me Love."

The alternative Rudimental version also appears on the British drum 'n' bass group's album, We the Generation. During an interview with The Sun, Rudimental's DJ Locksmith disclosed regarding the collaboration: "We were working in LA and he rocked up to our studio with The Game and Ellie Goulding."

"We made four tracks and revisited one this year (Bloodstream) to give it a Rudimental spin. We've known Ed for years. I remember when we first saw him getting noticed by everyone, he gave us one of his tracks to remix and he said it was one of the best remixes he'd ever had."

Nina

Sheeran wrote this with Snow Patrol's Johnny McDaid. The pair first got together in 2013 in Nashville to work on tracks for Sheeran's x album. "The first song we wrote together was 'Nina,' a love song about heartbreak, both self-inflicted and otherwise, where he basically calls someone up and advises her not to be with him," McDaid told Billboard magazine. "That sort of self-deprecating diary is pretty honest. Most people are fearful of being naked in front of the world, and afraid to expose their weaknesses. Ed isn't."

The pair became close friends and moved to Los Angeles together to continue working on x. Sheeran introduced McDaid to Courteney Cox, who became the Snow Patrol member's girlfriend.

Sheeran penned this about Scottish singer-songwriter Nina Nesbitt, who toured with him and also had a small cameo role in his "Drunk" video. The pair were also romantically involved for around a year. Sheeran explained during a Spotify track by track: "When you're a musician and you date someone, there's always an in-between. Like, you put your family and your friends first, always, and then your career second. But when you date someone, they kind of fall in between the family and friends and career, and you don't really know whether they're more important than the career or whether they're more important than family - so this is a song about that."

"You just need to find someone that's OK with it, and I think by the time you have kids, that's when your family comes first, and that's where the woman comes, because she's your family now," he added. "I think kids change everything, but up until then it's different. My family understand I had to go away for 12 months last year, but until you find a partner who'd happy with that, you shouldn't even bother. Well, you shouldn't bother committing."

Thinking Out Loud

This soulful song finds Sheeran tipping the hat to his key teenage influence, Van Morrison. "No one's really channeled Van Morrison for a long time," he pointed out to Q magazine. "Everyone always channels, Michael Jackson and the Beatles and Bob Dylan, and I feel like Van Morrison is a key figure in the music that I make."

Sheeran wrote this love song about his girlfriend at the time, Athina Andrelos, who worked for English celebrity chef Jamie Oliver. The pair split up in early 2015 after dating for about a year.

Ed Sheeran wrote this with the Bristol singer-songwriter Amy Wadge, whom he previously worked with on his 2010 EP, Songs I Wrote With Amy. Another of their collaborations, "Even My Dad Does Sometimes," can be found on the deluxe version of x.

Sheeran revealed to The Mirror that their song-writing session was held as a favor to his childhood friend to help her deal with financial issues. "[Amy] was going through financial troubles about a year ago," he said. "She drove to my house – my album was nearly done – and she asked if I could put a song from when I was 17 on the deluxe album, so she could get a little bit of money and pay the mortgage and bills and stuff."

"While she was there, we wrote 'Thinking Out Loud'," he added. "Now she never has to worry about money again."

The romantic ballad was the last song that Sheeran wrote for x. He penned it in his kitchen.

The song's music video was directed by Emil Nava, who also filmed the clip for "Sing." The visual features Sheeran and his partner Brittany Cherry ballroom dancing and was shot all at once in 16 mm film. "I wanted the video to be a little different, so I opted for ballroom dancing," he explained when the video was released in October 2014. "I had lessons for five hours a day when I was on my US tour last month."

Brittany Cherry was a contestant on Season 10 of the American TV dance competition So You Think You Can Dance. She is formally trained in ballroom, ballet, jazz, Latin and contemporary dance.

This topped the UK singles charts in its 19th week, after an exhilarating performance of the tune by Sheeran on the X Factor live show. In doing so the song broke the record for the slowest continual climb to #1, overtaking the 16-week ascent of Jennifer Rush's "The Power Of Love" and Celine Dion's "Think Twice."

The song broke the UK record for the most streams in a chart week when it was streamed 1.72 million streams in the week ending November 22, 2014.

The record was broken a month later by Mark Ronson's "Uptown Funk," which achieved 2.34 million streams in the pre-Christmas week.

Ed Sheeran wanted to look good for the video, so he lost 35 pounds, mainly by giving up beer.

Sheeran performed this at the Grammy Awards in 2015 backed by John Mayer on guitar, Questlove on drums, and Herbie Hancock on keyboards (Sheeran later joined Electric Light Orchestra on "Mr. Blue Sky"). X was nominated for Album Of The Year, but lost to Morning Phase by Beck.

This spent eight weeks at #2 on the Hot 100 behind Mark Ronson's "Uptown Funk" without ever reaching the peak position. Missy Elliott's "Work It" and Foreigner's "Waiting For A Girl Like You" hold the joint record for the most weeks peaked at the runner-up spot: ten apiece.

With electronic music ruling the airwaves, this was one of the few hit songs of its time with a guitar solo (played by Chris Leonard), which is near the end of the song in place of a bridge. Running 4:41, it was also very long by 2014 hit song standards, although this extra time makes the song more appealing as a first dance wedding number.

The song made history by becoming the first to spend a full year inside the UK Top 40. Pharrell Williams' "Happy" was the previous record holder, having spent 49 consecutive weeks on the Top 40.

This picked up the award for Song of the Year at the Grammys in 2016. Stevie Wonder presented the award, opening the envelope and reading the card in braille before saying, "I told my daughter Iesha this was a great song when I first heard it, and it has won tonight."

When Sheeran collected the award with Amy Wadge, he said, "We wrote it on a couch in my house after having dinner. Quite odd." He also thanked his parents for flying to the ceremony each of the previous three years, only to see Ed come away empty-handed. When Sheeran turned the mic over to Wadge, however, producers didn't let her get a word in before rolling a Glenn Frey tribute.

The song also won for Best Solo Pop Performance, but lost Record of the Year to "Uptown Funk."

This sassy Soul number is one of two tracks on x produced by Pharrell Williams (the other is the lead single "Sing.") Sheeran explained during a Spotify track-by-track how he ended up working with the hitmaking producer.

"Originally he tweeted 'This Angels To Fly song is great' a while ago," he said, "and then at the Grammys, I don't think he knew what I looked like, so I just went up to him and said, 'I'm a massive fan, I just wanted to say that's my tune!', and then we swapped numbers."
