Colorblind Lyrics

I am Colorblind
Coffee black and egg white
Pull me out from inside
I am ready, I am ready, I am ready,
I am taffy stuck and tongue tied
Stutter shook and uptight
Pull me out from inside
I am ready, I am ready, I am ready,
I am fine

I am covered in skin
No one gets to come in
Pull me out from inside
I am folded and unfolded and unfolding
I am colorblind
Coffee black and egg white
Pull me out from inside
I am ready, I am ready, I am ready,
I am fine
I am fine
I am fine

Colorblind
  • This song is about the extremes that exist within us ("Coffee black and egg white"), our unwillingness to reveal them ("Taffy stuck and tongue tied, stutter shook and uptight"), the defenses we put up to keep people from seeing our true natures ("I am covered in skin, no one gets to come in"), and the terrifying bliss when we let our defenses down to someone we love ("Pull me out from inside, I am ready, I am fine"). Colorblind is the state in which we are no longer judging our inner feelings.

    Hard Candy Lyrics

    On certain Sundays in November
    When the weather bothers me
I empty drawers of other summers
Where my shadows used to be
And she is standing by the water
As her smile begins to curl
In this or any other summer
    She is something altogether different
    Never just an ordinary girl

And in the evenings on Long Island
When the colors start to fade
She wears a silly yellow hat
That someone gave her when she stayed
I didn't think that she returned it
We left New York in a whirl
    Time expands and then contracts
When you are spinning in the grip of someone
Who is not an ordinary girl

And when you sleep you find your mother in the night
But she stays just out of sight
So there isn't any sweetness in the dreaming
And when you wake the morning covers you with light
And it makes you feel alright
But it's just the same Hard Candy you're
    remembering again

You send your lover off to China
And you wait for her to call
You put your girl up on a pedestal
Then you wait for her to fall
I put my summers back in a letter
And I hide it from the world
All the regrets you can't forget
Are somehow pressed upon a picture
In the face of such an ordinary girl

And when you sleep you find your mother in the night
But she fades just out of sight
So there isn't any sweetness in the dreaming
    And when you wake
The morning showers you with light
And it makes you feel alright
But it's just the same hard candy you're
    remembering again

    Hard Candy
  • The "Candy" represents the girl, and it's "Hardy Candy" because she is hard-to-get. It's described how the whole world changes when around this girl. The whole world spins because this girl is so extraordinary.
  • When the mother is talked about, it is could refer to how there is a bit of his mother (which "Stays just out of sight") in this girl, and when you see your mother's love displayed in this girl it makes everything all right again.

    Mrs. Potter's Lullaby Lyrics

Well I woke up in mid-afternoon cause that's when it all hurts the most
I dream I never know anyone at the party and I'm always the host
If dreams are like movies, then memories are films about ghosts
You can never escape, you can only move south down the coast

Well, I am an idiot walking a tightrope of fortune and fame
I am an acrobat swinging trapezes through circles of flame
If you've never stared off in the distance, then your life is a shame
And though I'll never forget your face,
sometimes I can't remember my name

    Hey Mrs. Potter don't cry
Hey Mrs. Potter I know why but
Hey Mrs. Potter won't you talk to me

Well, there's a piece of Maria in every song that I sing
And the price of a memory is the memory of the sorrow it brings
And there is always one last light to turn out and one last bell to ring
And the last one out of the circus has to lock up everything

Or the elephants will get out and forget to remember what you said
And the ghosts of the tilt-a-whirl will linger inside of your head
And the ferris wheel junkies will spin them forever instead
When I see you a blanket of stars covers me in bed

    Hey Mrs. Potter don't go
Hey Mrs. Potter I don't know but
Hey Mrs. Potter won't you talk to me

All the blue light reflections that color my mind when I sleep
And the lovesick rejections that accompany the company I keep
All the razor perceptions that cut just a little too deep
Hey I can bleed as well as anyone, but I need someone to help me sleep

So I throw my hand into the air and it swims in the beams
It's just a brief interruption of the swirling dust sparkle jet stream
Well, I know I don't know you and you're probably not what you seem
But I'd sure like to find out
So why don't you climb down off that movie screen

    Hey Mrs. Potter don't turn
Hey Mrs. Potter I burn for you
Hey Mrs. Potter won't you talk to me

When the last king of Hollywood shatters his glass on the floor
    and orders another
Well, I wonder what he did that for
That's when I know that I have to get out cause I have been there before
So I gave up my seat at the bar and I head for the door

We drove out to the desert just to lie down beneath this bowl of stars
We stand up at the Palace like it's the last of the great Pioneertown bars
We shout out these songs against the clang of electric guitars
You can see a million miles tonight
But you can't get very far

Hey Mrs. Potter I won't touch and
Hey Mrs. Potter it's not much but
Hey Mrs. Potter won't you talk to me

    Mrs. Potter's Lullaby
  • This song deals with memories and hope (both the false ones and all the far-searching dreams). Mrs. Potter is a movie star who Adam Duritz is looking up at, admiring, and wanting her to be a part of his life. This song has a very dreamy feel about it all the way through, as does the video clip. Duritz says he wrote the song after going to a movie and wondering what it would be like to fall in love with a girl on the screen.

Duritz had some particular insights here, as he has dated a litany of actresses, including Mary Louise Parker, Jennifer Aniston, Samantha Mathis and Emmy Rossum.
  • Adam Duritz has taken care not to reveal the identity of Mrs. Potter, and if it really is the actress Monica Potter from the movies Con Air, Patch Adams and Saw. He says that after he wrote the song, he had dinner with a couple who brought an actress friend along. She and Duritz hit it off, and he invited her to the recording session, where he announced her as "Mrs. Potter." She went out of town for a few days, during which time Duritz wrote a few songs inspired by their quick separation and long phone calls: "Colorblind," "Four Days" and "Kid Things."

When she returned, they started dating. Their producer Dennis Herring had given her a tape from the sessions, which she played for Duritz when he told her that they were having trouble mixing the song. One take on the tape sounded really good, so Adam played that one for the band and used it on the recording. They realized that they had overcomplicated the song, so they stripped it down, working from that one take.
  • This song runs 7:46, but Adam Duritz tells us that it took him only about 8 hours to write. "It's a longer song, but it's one sitting," he said. "I would always sit in that feeling for a while."

    Butterfly In Reverse Lyrics

    Mary-Ann
    You're better than the world
They took a lot of time
Getting it right on this girl
    I said, Mary-Ann
    You're better than the world
They did a lot of things right on this girl

    Had a lot of girlfriends
    I should have known them
Click your heels and count back from there
Do you want to go back?
    You should have known
That the Butterfly In Reverse here is me

    Mary-Ann
    You're better than the world
They took a lot of time
Getting it right on this girl
    I said, Mary-Ann
    You're better than the world
They did a lot of things right on this girl

Where'd you want to go to
    With nothing beside you
But webbing and curfews and rain?
    And everything that hurts you
    Is locked up inside you
    Like butterflies with wings
    And other perfect things

We go swimming in the sunshine
    Dangling from clotheslines
    Separate and fall into me
But did you ever see me?
    Me, absolutely?
Me, but all you, but still me?

    Mary-Ann
    You're better than the world
They took a lot of time
Getting it right on this girl, I said
    Mary-Ann
    You're better than the world
They did a lot of things right on this girl

    Butterfly In Reverse
  • This song expresses regret at losing a girl: Mary-Ann. It describes how Mary-Ann wasn't treated and appreciated as she should have been. The butterfly is used as a metaphor: their feelings are paralleled to a butterfly because butterflies appear so peaceful and at ease. It's explained how feelings are "locked up inside you." But, the author says that he is a "Butterfly in reverse," so this implies that he doesn't feel at ease, doesn't feel beautiful, and doesn't feel peaceful - like the butterfly. He's in indecision over this girl. In addition, the butterfly is compared to Mary-Ann and comes to represent her. She is labeled as perfect, as is the butterfly.
  • Hard Candy got its first breath of impetus from Adam Duritz ' work with Ryan Adams, and Adams returned the favor by co-writing and singing on this. The song revels in the fields of syrupy symphonic Pop, complete with Burt Bacharach reference.
  • This was written for the actress Mary-Louise Parker, whom Duritz dated back in the late 90s/early 2000s. Other actresses whom Duritz dated and who inspired Counting Crows songs are, Courteney Cox-Arquette ("Monkey") and Monica Potter ("Mrs. Potter's Lullaby").

    A Murder Of One Lyrics

    Blue morning Blue morning
Wrapped in strands of fist and bone
Curiosity, Kitten, doesn't have to mean you're on your own
Your can look outside your window
    He doesn't have to know
    We can talk awhile, baby
We can take it nice and slow

All your life is such a shame
All your love is just a dream

Are you happy where you're sleeping?
Does he keep you safe and warm?
Does he tell you when you're sorry?
Does he tell you when you're wrong?
I've been watching you for hours
It's been years since we were born
We were perfect when we started
I've been wondering where we've gone

All your life is such a shame
All your love is just a dream

I dreamt I saw you walking up a hillside in the snow
Casting shadows on the winter sky as you stood there counting crows
    One for sorrow
    Two for joy
Three for girls and four for boys
    Five for silver
    Six for gold and
Seven for a secret never to be told

There's a bird that nests inside you
    Sleeping underneath your skin
When you open up your wings to speak
I wish you'd let me in

All your life is such a shame
All your love is just a dream
    Open up your eyes
    You can see the flames
    of your wasted life
    You should be ashamed

You don't want to waste your life

I walk along these hillsides in the summer 'neath the sunshine
I am feathered by the moonlight falling down on me

    A Murder Of One
  • This song contains the band's namesake in the lyrics and reveals the origin. The lyric is "I dreamt I saw you walking up a hillside in the snow/Casting shadows on the winter sky as you stood there/counting crows/One for Sorrow/Two for Joy" etc. This is a reference to a Mother Goose rhyme which came from an old superstition. It was said that your fortune was dependent upon how many blackbirds you see on your path. This practice was eventually looked upon as silly, as there is another common saying that an action can be "As useless as counting crows."

Have You Seen Me Lately Lyrics

    Have You Seen Me Lately
  • When Counting Crows debut album August and Everything After took off, the group's mercurial frontman, Adam Duritz, became the focus of lots of unwanted attention. Despite his proclivity for dating actresses (Courteney Cox, Jennifer Aniston, Mary Louise Parker...), he hated the trappings of fame, as he found himself surrounded by people he found both banal and absurd. This song is about that strange trip into celebrity, and Adam is fully aware that complaining about being famous will not elicit sympathy from everyone. "It is difficult to deal with it," Adam told us . "If you're a guy who writes about what you're going through in life, then you can't not write about going through that if it happens. It was just such a weird thing to go from being a pretty shy, private person, to being on the cover of magazine stands. I wasn't really prepared for that, especially because I was already kind of unbalanced, and that really set it off"

"'Have You Seen Me Lately,' is about that," he continued. "Dealing with the relationships with people in the wake of that, how I felt about knowing whether they were real or not real, and my perceptions of my social life having exploded out across the radio."

    I Wish I Was a Girl Lyrics

    The devil's in the dreaming
He tells you I'm not sleeping in my hotel room alone
    With nothing to believe in
You dive into the traffic rising up
    And it's so quiet
    You're surprised
    And then you wake

For all the things you're losing
You might as well resign yourself to try and make a change
    I'm going down to Hollywood
They're gonna make a movie from the things that they find
    crawling round my brain

I Wish I Was a Girl so that you could believe me
And I could shake this static everytime I try to sleep
I wish for all the world that I could say,
"Hey Elizabeth, you know, I'm doing alright these days."

    The devil's in the dreaming
You see yourself descending from a building to the ground
    You watch the sky receding
You spin to see the traffic rising up
    And it's so quiet
    You're surprised
    And then you wake

For all the things I'm losing
I might as well resign myself to try and make a change
But I'm going down to Hollywood
They're gonna make a movie from the things that they find
    crawling round my brain

I wish I was a girl so that you could believe me
And I could shake this static every time I try to sleep
I wish for all the world that I could say,
"Hey Elizabeth, you know, I'm doing alright these days."

In one of these dreams, you forgive me
It makes me think of the bad decisions that keep you at home
How could anyone else have changed?
All these wrong conclusions that leave you alone
    How could everyone rearrange?
How could everyone else have changed?
    What I see I believe

For all the things I'm losing
I might as well resign myself to try and make a change
Well, I'm going down to Hollywood
They're gonna make a movie from the things that they find
    crawling around my brain

I wish I was a girl so that you could believe me
And I could shake this static everytime I try to sleep
I wish for all the world that I could say,
"Hey Elizabeth, you know, I'm doing alright these days."

    I Wish I Was a Girl
  • A band composition with lyrics by lead singer Adam Duritz , this song is about the same girl he sang about on their 1993 song "Goodnight Elisabeth." Her real name is Betsy, and Duritz dated her before he was famous. When the band took off and he went on tour, she feared he was cheating on her, and this song assures her that he wasn't. The song finds Duritz wishing he was a girl so that he could be a trusted friend who could convince her that he was faithful.

    Accidentally in Love Lyrics

So she said what's the problem baby
    What's the problem I don't know
Well maybe I'm in love (love)
    Think about it every time
    I think about it
    Can't stop thinking 'bout it

How much longer will it take to cure this
Just to cure it cause I can't ignore it if it's love (love)
Makes me want to turn around and face me but I don't know nothing 'bout love

    Come on, come on
    Turn a little faster
    Come on, come on
    The world will follow after
    Come on, come on
    'Cause everybody's after love

    So I said I'm a snowball running
Running down into the spring that's coming all this love
    Melting under blue skies
    Belting out sunlight
    Shimmering love

    Well baby I surrender
    To the strawberry ice cream
Never ever end of all this love
Well I didn't mean to do it
But there's no escaping your love

    These lines of lightning
    Mean we're never alone,
    Never alone, no, no

    Come on, Come on
    Move a little closer
    Come on, Come on
I want to hear you whisper
    Come on, Come on
    Settle down inside my love

    Come on, come on
    Jump a little higher
    Come on, come on
If you feel a little lighter
    Come on, come on
    We were once
    Upon a time in love

    We're Accidentally in Love
    Accidentally in love (x7)

    Accidentally

I'm In Love, I'm in Love,
I'm in Love, I'm in Love,
I'm in Love, I'm in Love,
    Accidentally [Repeat: x 7]

    Come on, come on
    Spin a little tighter
    Come on, come on
And the world's a little brighter
    Come on, come on
    Just get yourself inside her

    Accidentally in Love
  • This was written for the Shrek 2. It appears near the beginning of the movie.
  • Lead singer Adam Duritz (from Billboard): "I was really struggling with it. I generally don't write songs on demand, and I almost got to the point where I thought I wasn't going to do it. They just told me that the song had to be uplifting. They actually said, 'Don't write a song about Shrek. Write a song that's about you.' The funny thing is, the song ended up reflecting a lot of what was going on in my life at the time: falling in love with someone you're not supposed to fall in love with because it's inconvenient. My songs for Counting Crows are mature and generally don't get a chance to reach kids. To be part of something like that is pretty cool."
  • The girl in the video is Ashley Roberts from the Pussycat Dolls.
  • This was nominated for an Oscar for Best Original Song. It lost to "Al otro lado del río" from The Motorcycle Diaries.

    Anna Begins Lyrics

My friend assures me "it's all or nothing"
I am not worried, I am not overly concerned
My friend implores me: "For one time only make an exception"
    I am not not worried
Wrap her up in a package of lies send her off to a coconut island
I am not worried, I am not overly concerned
With the status of my emotions "Oh", She says, "You're changing."

    But we're always changing
It does not bother me to say this isn't love
Because if you don't want to talk about it then it isn't love
And I guess I'm going to have to live with that
But, I'm sure there's something in a shade of grey or something in between
And I can always change my name if that's what you mean

My friend assures me "It's all or nothing"
But I am not really worried, I am not overly concerned
You try to tell yourself the things you tell yourself to make yourself forget
    I am not worried
"If it's love", she said, "then were gonna have to think about the
    consequences"
She can't stop shaking and I can't stop touching her and.....

This time when kindness falls like rain
It washes her away and Anna Begins to change her mind
"These seconds when I'm shaking leave me shuddering for days" she says
And I'm not ready for this sort of thing

But I'm not gonna break and I'm not going to worry about it anymore
I'm not gonna bend and I'm not gonna break
I'm not gonna worry about it anymore
It seems like I should say "as long as this is love..."
But it's not all that easy so maybe I should just:
Snap her up in a butter fly net and just pin her down on a photograph album
I am not worried, I've done this sort of thing before
But then I start to think about the consequences
Because I don't get no sleep in a quiet room and...

The time when kindness falls like rain
It washes me away and Anna begins to change my mind
And every time she sneezes I believe it's it's love and
Oh lord.... I'm not ready for this sort of thing

    She's talking in her sleep
It's keeping me awake and Anna begins to toss and turn
And every word is nonsense but I understand and
Oh lord... I'm not ready for this sort of thing

    Her kindness bangs a gong
It's moving me along and Anna begins to fade away
    It's chasing me away
    She disappears and
Oh lord, I'm not ready for this sort of thing

    Anna Begins
  • Lead singer Adam Duritz wrote this song about denial. It's about when you're in a relationship with someone and you keep denying it's anything but a fling, then you wise up and realize that all along while you were denying it, you were growing closer together.
  • There is a real Anna - she's a girl from Australia that Duritz met on vacation in Greece in 1989, and she broke his heart. Duritz was far from famous at the time - he saved up money doing landscaping work to afford the trip. At the end of the trip, he and Anna agreed that there was no way for their relationship to continue, and they went their separate ways. "The characters keep saying 'I'm not ready for this sort of thing' until at the end when they find out what they really aren't ready for is the loss, but then it's too late," Duritz explained.

Adam says that they remained friends and occasionally spoke on the phone, even after Anna got married. She is a big fan of the song. (thanks, Beth - Charleston, SC, for above 2)
  • Duritz says that while Anna is real, the song is really about him, and in this context she is a character.
  • Adam Duritz often uses real - or slightly varied - names in the songs he writes. "Proper names matter to me, and so I use them," he said in our 2013 interview . "I think that comes across to other people, even if it's not the name they're thinking of. People ask me questions like that all the time, like, 'Who's Anna?' She's Anna. You don't know her. She's in Australia. But she's every girl you ever felt that way about, too."

A Long December and there's reason to believe
Maybe this year will be better than the last
I can't remember the last thing that you said as you were leavin'
Now the days go by so fast

And it's one more day up in the canyons
And it's one more night in Hollywood
If you think that I could be forgiven I wish you would

The smell of hospitals in winter
And the feeling that it's all a lot of oysters, but no pearls
All at once you look across a crowded room
To see the way that light attaches to a girl

And it's one more day up in the canyons
And it's one more night in Hollywood
If you think you might come to California I think you should

Drove up to Hillside Manor sometime after two a.m.
And talked a little while about the year
I guess the winter makes you laugh a little slower,
Makes you talk a little lower about the things you could not show her

And it's been a long December and there's reason to believe
Maybe this year will be better than the last
I can't remember all the times I tried to tell my myself
To hold on to these moments as they pass

And it's one more day up in the canyon
And it's one more night in Hollywood
It's been so long since I've seen the ocean I guess I should

    Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah

    A Long December
  • During the taping of a VH1 Storytellers performance, lead singer Adam Duritz talked about the song:
"In the middle of December of '95 my friend Jennifer got run over by a car, just creamed; and I spent that whole month, while we were just beginning the record and most of January and February in the hospital. Each morning and early afternoon then I'd go to the studio, the house where we were recording, and we'd play all afternoon and all night. It was a very weird time because there is a lot of stress, not that it's a big deal being a second album, but any album. They're just not that easy to make. It's a very stressful process, especially when you're first starting out. I spent a lot of time in the hospital which is pretty weird. But one day I just left the studio about 2 in the morning, and I went to my friend Samantha and Tracy's house which is Hillside Manor, that's what we call it anyway, it's just a little house and I sat there talking with them. I woke them up, got them out of bed and made them talk to me for a couple hours, then I went home to my house. I wrote this song between about 4 and 6 and then went to the hospital the next day, and came to the house and I played it for the guys before dinner and taught it to them after dinner. We played it about 6 or 7 times. It was take number 6. We just stopped, that was it. We recorded the song, it was done. We all went into the kitchen and had a cold beer, I grabbed Brad our engineer and ran back out about 5 minutes later, had him play the tape three times, just recorded all the harmonies, and we've never touched it since, that was it. It's a completely live song except for the harmonies. It's a song about looking back on your life and seeing changes happening, and for once for me, looking forward and thinking, ya know, things are gonna change for the better - 'maybe this year will be better than the last' - and so, like a lot of songs on the end of an album it's not about everything turning out great, but it at least it is about hope... and the possibilities..." (thanks, Scott - Memphis, TN)
  • Duritz was dating the actress Courteney Cox when he wrote this song - the line "the way that light attaches to a girl" is about her. Cox also appeared in the video (not her first - she was in Bruce Springsteen's video for "Dancing In The Dark").

Duritz, who also dated Cox' Friends co-star Jennifer Aniston, wrote the song "Monkey" about Courteney.

    American Girls Lyrics

She comes out on Fridays every time
    Stands out in a line
    I could've been anyone she'd seen
She waits another week to fall apart
    She couldn't make another day
I wish it was anyone but me
I could have been anyone you see
She had something breakable just under her skin

    [Chorus]
American Girls all weather and noise
Playing the changes for all of the boys
Holding a candle up to my hand
    Making me feel so incredible

She comes out of closets every night
    Then she locks herself away
Where she could keep everything from me
I could have been anyone you'd seen
she's nothing but porcelain underneath her skin

    [Chorus]

Little shiver shaking me every day
But I could get the same thing anywhere
    So if she goes away
Well, it's all right and I'm OK
"Hey" she said, "Come back again tonight"
    And I said "I might, I might, I might"
She said "well that's all right"
    If it's alright with you
    It's alright with me

I waited for an hour last Friday night
    She never came around
She took almost everything from me
    I'm going through my closet,
trying on her clothes almost every day
I could've been anyone you see
I wish it was anyone but me
There's nothing but pills and ashes under my skin

    [Chorus]

If I made you cry, please tell me why
Cause I'll try again if you let me try
American girls all feathers & cream
    Coming into bed so edible

    [Repeat: x2]
    American girls oh
    American girls
    American girls
    Oh, oh, oh, oh

    You make me cry,
    you make me cry,
    you make me cry
    Yeah, ya made me cry
    You make me cry
    Hey, miss American girl
    Oh, oh, oh, yeah

  • This is about an arrogant guy who gets dumped by his girlfriend after taking her for granted. The song was written by lead singer Adam Duritz , who says it is a dark and nasty song, but you won't know that unless you really listen to it.

Duritz has said that all of the songs he wrote are about him, and many of them are about the many girls he dated.
  • Sheryl Crow sang backup. She and Counting Crows shared space on many radio station playlists in the mid-late '90s.
  • After releasing this, the group spent a week opening for The Who on their US tour.

    Palisades Park Lyrics

Somebody screaming on Jim Jeffries' dreams
    Explode into a black fist
    He falls to the floor
He stares up at the sky
And he may wish he knew why
But you can't go back there no more

    The future sounds so crazy
We all heard that song before
Tomorrow's a name that changed from yesterday to blame
When a train just don't stop here anymore
    I got starry eyed
    On a coaster ride
Andy said, "Man, I need a break from the world outside"

And these days my life just careens
    Through a pinball machine
I could do so much better
But I can't get off the tilt
And there's a photograph on a TV, black and white
And Andy says something to you
Jack Johnson straddling Reno, Nevada like
She says I could get myself sometimes, too

    But out past the doorways
    Where we are sleeping
    Well, the white queen's creeping
    The time cat's beeping

    Now I'm not breaking
    The train's just shaking
I never made it here before
And there's a wide mouth spinning the girls around
Till they can't take it any more
I used to dream in the dark, in Palisades Park
Up over the cliffs and down among the spark
    It's a long life
    Been a long night
But it's not what I was waiting for
Everybody's seen the horses diving down the shore
It's a miracle they don't make them anymore

    So make up ladies
    Wake up baby
You walked into the bar like some Saturday star
Studs straight on spiked heels and needles and nerves
And you're a downtown pride, fully amplified Clyde
Gin-tied and Asian, but well preserved
Remember Annie outside your bedroom window
Saying, "Come on, let's drive across to the Palisades"
Keep going till we hit Reno, Nevada
I don't see it all that much these days

Still there are pages in back of the action stacks
    Where the white queen's creeping
    The time cat's beeping

    The train's not breaking
    The track's just shaking
I never made it here before
And there's a sky rocket turning the world around
Still I can't take it any more
And you can carry that spark from Palisades Park
Down over the cliffs and out into the dark
    It's a long life
    For a long night
But it's not what I was looking for
Everybody dreams of horses flying 'round the shore
It's a bad dream we're not having anymore

    Man, have you seen Andy?
    Hey man, hey man
    Have you seen him around?
Hey man, have you seen my Andy?
Hey man, have you seen him have you seen her have you seen him have you seen her
    Have you seen Andy around?

Dressed up in a pirate vest
All leathers and feathers and pearls
Andy said, "Look at me, man, I'm cooking
These hands are gonna figure out this whole world"
    He said, "Come outside
    Climb out your bedroom window
    Shimmy down the fire escape
    And say goodbye
    Come outside"
Andy says, "I'm dressed up just like Edie
    Changing all the time
My leopard spots to polka dots
    Say goodbye
    Come outside
Where maybe we can move to California
Just meet me at the subway
    And say goodbye
    Come outside
The cops all think we're crazy
If you steal, just get married
To a girl who'll never know you
    And then say goodbye"

Hey man, have you seen Andy?
I lost her in the cirque
I was high as a kite
    On a lovely and white
    Man, you can lose anyone
Hey hey man, have you seen Andy?
    I don't know where she's gone
    Real love outlives teenage lust
We could get wet and it keeps us warm
    Love is like angel dust
    Lovely sometimes changes us

    Sometimes we're not
Have you been aching with trust or just
Have you been waking yourself with lust
Have you been making us up or just
    Taking us home

    It's a long wait
    And a long life
    Cars frozen in flight
All the traffic stops to stare
At a crosswalk in Reno, Nevada
    Where nothing but air
And a pair of gray paper wings
Andy thinks, "I have got nothing to wear"
    We got nothing to wear
    We got nothing to wear
    We got nothing to wear
    We got nothing to wear

  • This epic tune clocks in at over eight minutes and was started by Adam Duritz in the early 2010s before being completed in a single sitting. He told us the story of the song in a 2013 interview: "I started writing it about two or three years ago. It was a piece of music that I was thinking about using for the play, which is why it was named 'Palisades Park' for no particular reason. Because it had to do with the play, a setting in the play. There were no words to it, but I had about five minutes of me playing and singing kind of nonsense words, going through all the different changes."

"I pulled it out and I really loved it. I finally sat down and really worked at writing the whole thing. It took me a while - it took me a week and a half, and the guys were here. I really love it. It's my best piece of music I've written - it's beautiful."

"It's really long. It's more like a 'Round Here' kind of song. It's a long song with different sections to it. It reminds me of the sort of stuff we do live, but on a record."
  • Somewhere Under Wonderland producer Brian Deck played the glockenspiel on the track. Deck is based at Engine Studios in Chicago and has worked with such bands as Modest Mouse, Iron & Wine, Fruit Bats and Gomez.
  • Duritz explained the song's meaning to Teamrock.com : "I was 27 the first time anyone from a record company even looked at a band I was in, and 28 when I got signed," he recalled. "The ten years before that that were really terrifying. But I was also having rich experience in my twenties, and Palisades Park celebrates that – being on the fringes, wanting to try on the wrong sex's clothing, and wanting to try PCP, which is a bad idea. But it's about that experimentation."

    Earthquake Driver Lyrics

I was born again a little north of Disney Land
    Somewhere under Wonderland and Hollywood
But then I had to go skipping and diving and bouncing back to New York City
Straight through the heart of America where all the wild things grow

I want to be an Earthquake Driver
I want to be an aquarium diver
I just don't want to go home

I live alone but I am hungry for affection
I just struggle with connection til the water calls me home
Down into ocean among millions of other lonely people
Drowning among the only people we are ever going to know

I want to be an earthquake driver
I want to be an aquarium diver
I just don't want to go home

I want to be like the people I see
They run all over just like me
I was saved but what keeps me awake
Is I'm tied into the lightning line
And I wanna see where the sun is shining
All night just a waste of time I, I don't want to see people like me
Just sleeping in, waking in, hoping in, hating in

You look at me like I'm some kind of carnival attraction
You say love's this abstraction, just some ghost that you chase
Well, I am sorry friend, I am a blank space
But the words you remember from whenever you saw my face

I want to be an earthquake driver
I don't want to be an aquarium diver
I just don't want to go home

I want to be like the people I see
Hey man, they run all over just like me
I want to thank for what keeps me awake
This unplugged ears to the lightning lining
I want to see if the sun is shining
All night, chasing time I, I don't want to be with people like me
Just creeping in, waking in, hoping in, hating in

So what is the point of this famous self absorption?
We turn ourselves into orphans and then spend out nights alone
Living in fear of some kind of imaginary consequence
    Terror incognito, ob-la-di ob-la-da

I want to be an earthquake driver
I don't want to be an aquarium diver
I just don't want to go home

Truth is I don't want to be no earthquake driver
And I don't want to be an aquarium diver
I just don't want to go home

Oh man, just don't want to go home
No, I do not want to go home

  • Counting Crows vocalist Adam Duritz wrote this track with guitarist David Immerglück. The song finds Duritz asking, "What is the price of this fame and self-absorption?" He told Teamrock.com a lot of the lyrics are him "making fun of things." Duritz explained: "Someone was bitching about the obviousness of it saying 'I live alone but I'm hungry for affection. I struggle with connections' – does he have to relate his travails? That's a joke, you idiot!"

"And we joke about people being self-absorbed, but of course we want them to be that way, because who the f--k else is going to write songs for us, paint paintings, and sacrifice the rest of their lives to examining their own navels, so that everybody else can be entertained,?" he added. "Movies about artists are always about that s--t, bland critiques of them not always being the best people. Who gives a f--k? Lots of people who are far less interesting than Mozart have bad home lives. But nobody ever explores, why would you paint a painting, or write a song?"

    Hanging Tree Lyrics

She brings her friends so we wont have to be alone
Fear I might lose my composure without warning
I am a child of fire I am a lion I have desires
And I was born inside the sun this morning

    [Chorus]
This dizzy life of mine keeps hanging me up all the time
This dizzy life is just a Hanging Tree
This dizzy life of mine keeps hanging me up all the time
This dizzy life is just a hanging tree

They say good evening when they don't know what to say
They say good morning when they wish you would go home

You open windows and you wait for someone warm to come inside and then freeze to death alone

    [Chorus]

She calls a waitress when its time for her to go
And I know everyone is eventually leaving
I got a pair of wings for my birthday baby and I will fall down through the sun to see you mine

    [Chorus]

For me, for me, for me [Repeated]

This dizzy life is just a hanging tree
This dizzy life is just a hanging tree for me

This dizzy life is just a hanging tree for me
For me, for me, for me [Repeated]

  • Written by frontman Adam Duritz and guitarist Dan Vickrey, this is the second track from the band's fifth studio album.
  • According to Duritz, the lyrics have a dual meaning: they both chronicle the angst that he felt after losing his grandmother, and they also describe the way that we all drift away from others on an everyday basis to the point where it no longer seems noticeable.
  • Just like several other songs on the same album, like "Sundays" and "Insignificant," the lyrics contain imagery pertaining to the Greek myth of Icarus: "I got a pair of wings for my birthday and I’ll fall down through the sun this evening," is just an example.
  • The discordant sound heard at the very end of the song was made by tossing a harmonica into some piano wires.
  • Duritz once said that he would have much rather have had either this or "When I Dream of Michelangelo" be the lead single off of the album, as they better represent the album thematically, as opposed to "You Can't Count On Me." (thanks, Alec Thorp - Yorktown Heights, NY, for above 4)
