Cinnamon Girl Lyrics

As war drums beat in Babylon
Cinnamon Girl starts to pray
I've never heard a prayer like this 1
Never before that day

Tearful words of love for people she had never met before
Asking God to grant them mercy in this face of a holy war

Cinnamon Girl

Cinnamon Girl of mixed heritage
Never knew the meaning of color lines
Nine one one turned that all around
When she got accused of this crime

So began the mass illusion, war on terror alibi
What's the use when the god of confusion keeps on telling the same lie?

Cinnamon Girl

Don't cry, don't shed no tears
1 night won't make us feel
Cause we know how this movie's ending

Cinnamon Girl

As war drums beat in Babylon
And scorch the blood red sky
Militants bomb the foreign gun
Both sides truly die

Cinnamon girl opens the book she knows will settle all the scores
Then she prays after the war that there will not be anymore

Cinnamon Girl

Cinnamon Girl
  • This song has heavy religious undertones. Since Prince was a member of the Jehovah's Witness religion, his writing was influenced by his belief system.

"The god of confusion" refers to the JWs belief in Satan as the devil. The lyric, "Don't cry, don't shed no tears... cause we know how this movie's ending" refers to an Armageddon the JWs believe will occur. At the end of the song, when "the girl opens the books she knows will settle all the scores," that book is the Bible.

Prince embraced his new religion after becoming friends with former Sly and the Family Stone bassist Larry Graham, who was a Jehovah's Witness.
  • Prince was nominated for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance for this song at the 2005 Grammy Awards but lost to John Mayer's "Daughters."
  • Aside from its title, this song has no connection to Neil Young's "Cinnamon Girl."
  • There was a swirl of controversy around the music video for this song, which features actress Keisha Castle-Hughes as a Muslim girl who faces extreme prejudice after the September 11 attacks on the US and dreams of becoming a terrorist herself.

    Breakfast Can Wait Lyrics

    Hey baby, where you going?
No please don’t rush off so soon
If you leave me like this
    What I’m gonna do

    Finally my eyes are open
I dream about you all night long
The only thing that I’ve been hoping for
Is before you to go to work babe, we get it on
I ain’t tryin’ to make you blush
But I just wanted to tell ya, I think you’re great
I know you’re late, but I need another taste
    Breakfast Can Wait!

Grits and gravy, cheese eggs and jam
Can't nobody cook it like you girl
    No ma’am!
This here early morning, need something else on my plate
I think I want another bite of you
    Breakfast can wait!

    Breakfast can wait
You really put it on me
You shut it down last night
I thought the police was gonna come
    Loud, yeah, quite
I ain’t tryin’ to make you blush
    I just think you’re great
    Ain’t no need to rush
    Breakfast can wait

    Finally my eyes are open
I dream about you all night long
The only thing that I’ve been hoping for
Is before you to go to work babe, we get it on
I ain’t tryin’ to make you blush
But I just wanted to tell ya, I think you’re great
I know you’re late, but I need another taste
    Breakfast can wait!

    Hotcakes smothered in honey
    (Wait a minute)
    I’m gon’ have to pass
Fresh cup of coffee, no, no
I’d rather have you in my glass
Only thing’s that gonna sweeten my tongue
Only thing that’s gonna last now
Is another bite of you babe
    Breakfast can wait

    Finally my eyes are open
I dream about you all night long
The only thing that I’ve been hoping for
Is before you to go to work babe, we get it on
I ain’t tryin’ to make you blush
But I just wanted to tell ya, I think you’re great
I know you’re late, but I need another taste
    Breakfast can wait!
    Breakfast can wait!

Can’t stop even if the á¹—olice come
    Breakfast can wait!
I got a double time, kick drum
    Breakfast, breakfast
You can’t leave a black man in this state
    Breakfast can wait!
    Oh no
    Breakfast, breakfast can wait!

Come here baby, let me put you on my plate
    Hey now
    Breakfast can wait!
    Better call your job yeah
    Breakfast can wait!
Tell ‘em you gon’ be late
    Breakfast can wait!
    Yeah, yeah, yeah
    Prince is in charge now
    Nice one
    Breakfast can wait!
    Breakfast can wait!
    Breakfast can wait!
You’re the only thing I need
    Breakfast can wait!
    Sweetness in my tongue
    Breakfast can wait!
Come here baby, let me show you where I’m from
    Breakfast can wait!
    Yeah
    Breakfast can wait!
Oh, you know you might need to pray for me
You might need to come again
    Breakfast can wait!
    Oh yeah-yeah

  • The official artwork for this song is actually a picture of comedian Dave Chappelle impersonating Prince in a sketch on the 2000s Comedy Central series Chappelle's Show. Chappelle's Prince impersonation was one of his most popular - he portrayed The Purple One as being absurdly good at basketball.
  • The song's music video was directed by 18-year-old Danielle Curiel, who also stars in the clip as The Purple One himself. Prince granted the teenager complete artistic and directorial freedom after a single reading of the treatment that she submitted for the song.

PretzelBodyLogic yeah, it's so much fun!
Dreaming of each other on each other's tongue
    Tastes a bitter sweet undone
Now we both too sleepy to get the gun

    Woo!

    Oh!

    (Wake up)

    Woo!

Hear the plane humming back on the run
One I would sleep between 'em better than none
Promoter tried to rob 'em we said "Go 'head son!"
Because we're both too sleepy to get the gun

Pretzelbodylogic yeah, it's so much fun!
Dreaming of each other on each other's tongue
    Tastes a bitter sweet undone
Now we both too sleepy to get the gun

    Bank's on a holiday, credit's overrun
Somebody else's problem to tie for another one
Pull these shades one me black out the Sun
I need a little more rest, then we'll do what needs to be done!

Pretzelbodylogic yeah, it's so much fun!
Dreaming of each other on each other's tongue
    Tastes a bitter sweet undone
Now we both too sleepy to get the gun

Limo on tarmack ready to ride
    Cutie-Pie driver said "Get inside!"
Another limousine about to get alone
Put your seat back now, it's one (One!) two (Two!)
Three for the road! (Three for the road!)

  • This upbeat Funk-Rock jam is a song from Prince's Plectrum Electum album, which he performs with his 3rdEyeGirl band. The group is made up of guitarist Donna Grantis, bassist Ida Neilsen and drummer Hannah Ford Welton. Nielsen told the crowd at a listening party that Plectrum Electum was, "completely recorded live, analog, old-school. We were influenced by Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, people that recorded analog. People aren't recording analog anymore. It's manufactured, overproduced music."
  • The Minneapolis singer debuted the song in the post-Super Bowl "Prince" episode of New Girl, which also featured the superstar dishing out relationship advice to the show's stars Jess (Zooey Deschanel) and Nick (Jake Johnson). "He contacted us last season because he's a huge fan," the show's producer Brett Baer told MTV News. "He knows everything about the show. He contacted Zooey and Hannah [Simone] directly and asked to do the show. We couldn't work it out last year. But when the Super Bowl thing was floated, it was perfect timing."

    Uptown Lyrics

She saw me walking down the streets of your fine city
It kinda turned me on when she looked at me and said, "come here"
Now I don't usually talk to strangers but she looked so pretty
What can I lose, if I, uh, just give her a little ear?
    "What's up little girl?"
"I ain't got time to play"
    Baby didn't say too much
    She said, "Are you gay?"
Kinda took me by surprise, I didn't know what to do
I just looked her in her eyes and I said, "no, are you?"
    Said to myself, said
"She's just a crazy, crazy, crazy little mixed up dame
She's just a victim of society and all its games"
    Now where I come from
We don't let society tell us how it's supposed to be
Our clothes, our hair, we don't care
    It's all about being there
    Everybody's going Uptown
That's where I want to be
    Uptown
    Set your mind free
    Uptown
    Got my body hot
    Get down
I don't want to stop, no

As soon as we got there good times were rolling
White, Black, Puerto Rican, everybody just a-freakin'
    Good times were rolling
She started dancing in the streets
Ow, girl, she's just gone mad, you know
She even made love to me
Ooh, best night I ever had, ah yeah
I never talk to strangers but this time it's all right
See, she got me hot, ah, I couldn't stop, ah
Good times were rolling all night, all night, yeah
Now, where I come from we don't give a damn
    We do whatever we please
It ain't about no downtown, nowhere-bound, narrow-minded drag
    It's all about being free
    Everybody's going uptown
It's where I want to be
    Uptown
You can set your mind free, yeah
    Uptown
    Keep your body hot
    Get down
I don't want to stop, no

    Uptown
    Oh, oh, yeah
    Uptown
    Everybody's going, everybody's going
    Everybody gotta gotta uptown
    Now go-go-go, go-go-go uptown

    Uptown
Yeah, yeah, now, all now, uptown
    Gotta go-go-go
Baby, got to go, got to, uptown
C'mon, c'mon, you, you have to, you gotta go uptown

  • Prince said that "Uptown" was his nickname for his hometown of Minneapolis, Minnesota. Uptown Minneapolis is located just 15 blocks from the downtown core and is not considered part of downtown. The neighborhood caters to a 21-35 crowd and is only a couple of blocks from their chain of lakes. (Thanks to the Minneapolis Regional Chamber of Commerce. For more, check out uptownminneapolis.com .)
  • This song is also about standing up against any kind of prejudice, whether it's targeted at skin color or style. Prince told Rolling Stone that, growing up, he and his friends "took a lot of heat all the time. People would say something about our clothes or the way we looked or who we were with, and we'd end up fighting. I was a very good fighter... I never lost. I don't know if I fight fair, but I go for it. That's what 'Uptown' is about - we do whatever we want, and those who cannot deal with it have a problem within themselves."
  • During a surprise phone-in interview the night before his birthday in 1985, Prince told the Detroit disc jockey, The Electrifying Mojo, what it was like to grow up in "Uptown": "Pretty different. Uh, kinda sad, to be exact. (laughs) I mean, the radio was dead, the discos was dead, ladies was kinda dead, so I felt like, if we wanted to make some noise, and I wanted to turn anything out... I was gonna have to get somethin' together. Which is what we did. We put together a few bands and turned it into Uptown. That consisted of a lot of bike riding nude, but ya know it worked. We had fun."
  • The song discusses the question many fans at the time had about Prince's sexuality. The lyrics made it clear that he was heterosexual. (thanks, Illya - Detroit, MI)
  • This was the first single from Prince's third album, Dirty Mind. The song bubbled under at #101 on the Hot 100 and made #5 on the R&B chart, providing the closest thing to a hit on the album. Dirty Mind did well with critics and fans, but aside from "Uptown," it wasn't very radio-friendly, with songs like "Head" and "When You Were Mine" that were too risqué for the public airwaves. It wasn't until Prince's fifth album, 1999 (released in 1982), that he became a regular on radio and MTV.

    Dirty Mind Lyrics

    There's something about you, baby
    It happens all the time
    Whenever I'm around you, baby
    I get a Dirty Mind
It doesn't matter where we are
    It doesn't matter who's around
It doesn't matter, I just want to lay ya down
    In my daddy's car
It's you I really want to drive
But you never go too far
I may not be your kind of man
I may not be your style
But honey, all I want to do is just love you for a little while

    If you got the time
    I'll give you some money
    To buy a dirty mind
    Don't misunderstand me
    I never fool around
But honey, you got me on my knees, won't you please let me lay ya down

I really get a dirty mind (mind, mind, mind)
    Whenever you're around
It happens to me every time (time, time, time)

You just gotta let me lay ya
Gotta let me lay ya, lay ya
You just gotta let me lay ya
Gotta let me lay ya down

    In my daddy's car
It's you I really want to drive
    Underneath the stars
I really get a dirty mind
    Whenever you're around

    Dirty Mind
  • It's far from his most lascivious song, but this early Prince track finds him letting a girl know that when he sees her, his thoughts turn dirty. It's not the most sophisticated pickup line, but it certainly makes the intention clear. A few years later, Dexys Midnight Runners scored a huge hit with "Come On Eileen," a song where lead singer Kevin Rowland reveals his dirty thoughts.
  • The keyboard riff in this song was created by The Revolution's "Doctor Fink." He was the first band member to receive a songwriting credit on a Prince song.
  • This was the last Prince video to feature Revolution member Andre Cymone, who left to start a solo career in 1981. His debut song, "The Dance Electric," was written by Prince and became a hit on the R&B charts.
  • This song was featured on the soundtrack to Cameron Crowe's 1984 comedy The Wild Life.

  • Prince and Zooey Deschanel premiered a snippet of this duet during the 2014 post-Super Bowl episode of New Girl. Thanks to Purple One's appearance in the Fox comedy, it became the top-rated scripted telecast among the big four TV networks in three years, averaging nearly 26 million viewers.
  • The song was dropped as a single on March 18, 2014 via an agreement with major label Epic Records and L.A. Reid. It was the first time that Prince and the veteran executive had teamed up on a release.
  • Prince's appearance on New Girl also featured the Purple One dishing out relationship advice to Zooey Deschanel's Jess character. His guest role resulted after the Minneapolis superstar reached out to the show's producers. "He said, 'I'm a big fan. I'd love to do the show at some point in the future,'" said New Girl creator Liz Meriwether.
  • Deschanel is an accomplished vocalist as well as an actress and has teamed up with singer-songwriter M. Ward to release a series of albums under the moniker She & Him. However, prior to this duet, Deschanel's singing had previously never featured on New Girl (outside of the theme song). The Hollywood Reporter asked Meriwether whether having Prince there changed that? "It might, it might," she replied with a laugh.

"That was also definitely about trying to figure out what was within the world of the show, but it was just so fun to watch and shoot. We just felt, again, it was one of those moments where we're like, 'Well, let's just go for it.' I think we can come back from this without losing all of our integrity. Basically, it's just awesome to see."
  • The song was reworked in 2015 by Prince for his HITnRUN album.

Listen to me closely as the story unfolds
This could be the saddest story even been told
I used to want the house with the biggest pool
I've been missing out I just feel like a fool

Keep breaking me down, down, down

I used to throw the party at the New Year's Eve
First one intoxicated, last one to leave
Waking up in places that you would never believe
Give me back the time, you can keep the memories

Keep breaking me down, down, down

Every book I've read said that I would meet somebody like you
Whenever I was sorry, so sorry for the things I used to do
A journal full of numbers that I used to go through
    (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7) all behind me now, all because of you

Keep breaking me down, down, down

You keep breaking me, you keep breaking me down
    I don't wanna walk out
Don't wanna go down, down, down

See there's a door that you can walk through
Where there used to be a wall
I don't care, it's cool as long as you catch me baby

  • Prince opens this orchestral, stately ballad by stating: "This could be the saddest story ever been told." The Jehovah Witness star then proceeds to sing of regret as he decries his former partying self:

I used to throw the party at New Year's Eve
First one intoxicated, last one to leave
Waking up in places that you would never believe
Give me back the time, you can keep the memories.
  • Prince released the song for streaming on April 18, 2014 immediately after announcing a new partnership with Warner Bros. Eighteen years after the Purple One left the label when he famously wrote "slave" on his face to protest at his contract and changed his name to a symbol, it appears he is on good terms with them again.
  • Prince first performed this song at Minneapolis' Dakota Jazz Club in early 2013. He later referenced it during a March 2014 interview with Arsenio Hall when he said this is his current favorite song to play: "One of the things that we try to do, though, is wait until we have other songs that go together with our favorites," Prince said. "That's why it takes a long time to come out with albums these days."

I never meant to cause you any sorrow
I never meant to cause you any pain
I only wanted to one time to see you laughing

    Laughing in the Purple Rain

    Purple rain, purple rain

Baby, I could never steal you from another
It's such a shame our friendship had to end

    Purple rain, purple rain
    Purple rain, purple rain
    Purple rain, purple rain
I only wanted to see you
    Underneath the purple rain

    Honey, I know, I know
    I know times are changing
It's time we all reach out
For something new, that means you too

You say you want a leader
But you can't seem to make up your mind
I think you better close it
And let me guide you to the purple rain

    Purple rain, purple rain
    Purple rain, purple rain
If you know what I'm singing about up here
    C'mon, raise your hand

    Purple Rain Song Chart
  • After Prince released his 1999 album in 1982, he toured in many of the same cities Bob Seger did. Prince was amazed at how crowds connected with Seger's songs like "Night Moves" and "Mainstreet," which were slow songs that told stories people could relate to. Prince decided to write a song in that style, and "Purple Rain" was the result.
  • The album was actually the soundtrack to the first movie Prince made. He went on to make three more, Under The Cherry Moon, Sign O' The Times, and Graffiti Bridge. Purple Rain won Prince an Oscar for Best Original Song Score (not to be confused with the Best Original Score category, won that year by A Passage to India).

The song "Purple Rain" was the centerpiece of the film and a key plot point. In the movie, the female members in Prince's band, Wendy Melvoin and Lisa Coleman, write a song that Prince ignores, prompting a tirade from Wendy ("Every time we give you a song you say you're going to use it but you never do. You're being paranoid as usual..."). At the end of the film, Prince's crew is in a heated rivalry with another band (The Time), who do a blistering set that Prince must follow. When Prince takes the stage, he introduces "Purple Rain" as being written by Wendy and Lisa, then tears down the house with it.

Wendy and Lisa were real members of Prince's band until 1987 when they left to record as a duo. This song, however, was composed solely by Prince. It's a love song, with Prince singing about his devotion to a girl, but it also serves as a catharsis, releasing the pent-up frustrations that had been building throughout the movie. The "Purple Rain" is a place to be free.
  • The song was written for the Purple Rain film, but it served Prince very well in concert, where it was often his showstopper. He retained many of the visual elements from the movie performance in his shows, which isn't much of a stretch - the concert scenes were filmed at the First Avenue nightclub in Minneapolis, where Prince often performed.
  • This has been victim to being covered by Phish, featuring the infamous vacuum solos. Jon Fishman, the drummer, reigns control over the vacuum and also sings the song's vocally demanding lyrics. (thanks, Jeff - Kendall Park, NJ)
  • Prince played this to open the 2004 Grammy Awards. After singing part of the song, Beyoncé came on stage, and they performed a medley of their hits.
  • The album is mentioned in the movie Shaun Of The Dead when Shaun and Ed are thumbing through their record collection and deciding what to throw at two zombies in their yard. One of the records that they decide not to chuck is Purple Rain. (thanks, Hermione - Los Angeles, CA)
  • On the tour to promote the album (conveniently called the "Purple Rain World Tour"), Prince's band, The Revolution, would play the intro to this song for about eight minutes while Prince underwent a costume change before emerging in fresh duds to complete the performance.
  • Stevie Nicks told Mojo magazine in December 2013 that she was asked by Prince to help work on this song. However, she suspects that the Purple maestro wanted more than just her voice. "I've still got it [the demo cassette] - with the whole instrumental track and a little bit of Prince singing, 'Can't get over that feeling,' or something," the Fleetwood Mac singer recalled. "I told him, 'Prince, I've listened to this a hundred times but I wouldn't know where to start. It's a movie, it's epic."

She added: "The olive branch of him giving me that cassette was huge, but I think he would have liked a romance with me, too."
  • Prince provided one of the most memorable Super Bowl halftime moments when he performed this song in the rain at the 2007 game between the Indianapolis Colts and Chicago Bears. After blasting through bits of several songs, he slowed things down for a sensuous rendition of "Purple Rain." The stadium turned dark, and purple lights glistened through raindrops as Prince enraptured the crowd with a silhouetted guitar solo that produced a stunning visual. Colts fans will remember the game, but for the rest of us, Prince's performance on the field was the highlight.
  • Prince admitted the success of the film and its music was overwhelming. "In some ways Purple Rain scared me," he noted in The Observer. "It's my albatross and it'll be hanging around my neck as long as I'm making music."
  • Many viewers were offended by the movie Purple Rain because of its apparent sexism. Prince defended the film, and himself, to MTV in 1985: "I didn't write Purple Rain. Someone else did. And it was a story, a fictional story, and should be perceived that way. Violence is something that happens in everyday life, and we were only telling a story. I wish it was looked at that way, because I don't think anything we did was unnecessary. Sometimes, for the sake of humor, we may've gone overboard. And if that was the case, then I'm sorry, but it was not the intention."

The film was written by its director Albert Magnoli and William Blinn.

I guess that makes it all right
And you say what have I got to lose?
    And honey I say

    Little Red Corvette
    Baby you're much too fast
    Little red Corvette
You need a love that's gonna last

I guess I should of closed my eyes
When you drove me to the place
    Where your horses run free
'Cause I felt a little ill
When I saw all the pictures
Of the jockeys that were there before me

    Believe it or not
    I started to worry
I wondered if I had enough class
    But it was Saturday night
I guess that makes it all right
And you say, "Baby, have you got enough gas?"
    Oh yeah

    Little red Corvette
Baby you're much to fast, yes you are
    Little red Corvette
You need to find a love that's gonna last, ah huh

A body like yours (A body like yours)
Oughta be in jail (Oughta be in jail)
'Cause it's on the verge of bein' obscene
('Cause it's on the verge of bein' obscene)

Gimme the keys (Gimme the keys)
I'm gonna try to tame your little red love machine
(I'm gonna try to tame your little red love machine)

    Little red Corvette
    Baby you're much to fast
    Little red Corvette
You need to find a love that's gonna last

    Little red Corvette
Honey you got to slow down (Got to slow down)
    Little red Corvette
'Cause if you don't you gonna run your
Little red Corvette right in the ground

    (Little red Corvette)
Right down to the ground (Honey you got to slow down) you, you, you got to
Slow down (Little red Corvette) you're movin' much too fast
(Too fast) you need to find a love that's gonna last

Girl, you got an ass like I never seen
    And the ride,
I say the ride is so smooth
    You must be a limousine

    Baby you're much to fast
    Little red Corvette

  • Prince got the idea for this when he dozed off in backup singer Lisa Coleman's pink Edsel after an exhausting all night recording session. The lyrics came to him in bits and pieces during this and other catnaps. Eventually he was able to finish it without sleeping.
  • This is about sex, but it's just obscure enough not to offend anybody. Many of his earlier songs, like "Head," "Dirty Mind," and "Soft And Wet," were blatantly sexual, which turned off radio stations.
  • For Prince, this was his first big hit. Over the next few years he had many more, making him extremely popular on radio stations and as a concert draw.
  • Previous Prince material was much more raw and funky than this. This was much more slick, which led to radio play and commercial success.
  • 1999 was Prince's fifth album. He had just modest success to this point, his biggest hit being the #11 "I Wanna Be Your Lover" four years earlier.
  • The line, "She had a pocket full of horses, Trojans, some of them used," refers to Trojan condoms. The "Jockeys" represent men who have previously slept with the girl. These were veiled sexual references that not enough people got to make the song be considered offensive.
  • Stevie Nicks got the idea for "Stand Back" from this song. She heard it in her car, drove to the recording studio, and put down some tracks. "It just gave me an incredible idea, so I spent many hours that night writing a song about some kind of crazy argument, and it was to become one of the most important of my songs," she remembered in the liner notes for Timespace.

Prince came in and added the keyboard bit. As Nicks tells it, he came up with the riff as soon as he started playing it.
  • This was one of the first videos by a black artist to get regular airplay on MTV. Michael Jackson was the first to break the color barrier on MTV with "Billie Jean," and this came soon after. The band shot the clip during a tour stop in Jacksonville; the song was already a radio hit when they made it.
  • "1999" was released before this and didn't do well, but it was re-released after this became a hit and went to #12 in the US.
  • In 2001, Chevrolet put up billboards with a picture of a red 1963 Corvette Sting Ray that said, "They don't write songs about Volvos." In 2003, Chevrolet used this in a commercial that aired for the first time during the Grammys. The ad showed old footage of The Beach Boys performing "My 409" followed by Don McLean singing "American Pie" ("drove my Chevy to the levee"), and then Prince performing this. The camera then goes outside the club to show Chevy's latest model.
  • There was a Billboard for the Chevrolet Corvette made from this song as well. It had the lyric "Little Red Corvette, baby ur much 2 fast" and Prince's logo over the Corvette. It was displayed behind the National Corvette Museum in Bowling Green, Kentucky in 2003. (thanks, Mike - Melbourne, FL)

    1999 Lyrics

    {Don't worry, I won't hurt you
    I only want you to have some fun}

I was dreamin' when I wrote this, forgive me if it goes astray
But when I woke up this mornin', could've sworn it was judgment day
The sky was all purple, there were people runnin' everywhere
Tryin' to run from the destruction, you know I didn't even care

Say say two thousand zero zero party over, oops, out of time
So tonight I'm gonna party like it's nineteen ninety-nine

I was dreamin' when I wrote this, so sue me if I go too fast
But life is just a party and parties weren't meant to last
War is all around us, my mind says prepare to fight
So if I gotta die I'm gonna listen to my body tonight

Yeah hey, they say two thousand zero zero party over, oops, out of time
So tonight I'm gonna party like it's nineteen ninety-nine
    Yeah, yeah, hey

People, let me tell you somethin'

If you didn't come to party, don't bother knockin' on my door, oww
I got a lion in my pocket and baby he's ready to roar, yeah hey
Everybody's got a bomb, we could all die any day, oh
But before I let that happen, I'll dance my life away, oh ho

They say two thousand zero zero party over, oops, out of time
    (We're runnin' out of time)
So tonight I'm gonna party like it's nineteen ninety-nine
    (We gonna, we gonna, oh)

    Say it one more time
Two thousand zero zero party over, oops, out of time
    (No, no)
So tonight I'm gonna party like it's nineteen ninety-nine
    (We gonna, we gonna)

    Alright, nineteen ninety-nine
    You say it, nineteen ninety-nine
    Mmm nineteen ninety-nine
    (Oww, nineteen ninety-nine)

Don't stop it, don't stop it, say it one more time
Two thousand zero zero party over, oops out of time
    (Yeah, yeah)
So tonight I'm gonna party like it's nineteen ninety-nine
    (We gonna, we gonna, whoa)
    Yeah, nineteen ninety-nine
    Don't you wanna go?
    (Nineteen ninety-nine)
    Don't you wanna go?
    (Nineteen ninety-nine)
We could all die any day
    (Nineteen ninety-nine)
I don't wanna die, I'd rather dance my life away
    (Nineteen ninety-nine)

Listen to what I'm tryin' to say
    Everybody, everybody say party
Come on now, you say it party
    That's right, everybody say party
    Can't run from revelation, no
    (Party)
Sing it for your nation, y'all
    (Party)
    (Ow!)
    Dreamin' when you're singin', baby
    (Party)
Say the telephone a ringin', mama, now
    (Party)
Come on, come on, you say
    (Party)
    Everybody, two times
    (Party)
    (Ow!)
Work it down to the ground, I'm sayin'
    (Party)
    Oh baby, say it again
    (Ooh hoo hoo)
    (Party)
    Oh, shake your body, baby!
    (Party)
That's right, come on, sing the song
    (Party)
    Ah aah ha
    (Party)
    That's right
    (Party)
Got a lion in my pocket mama, say
    (Party)
Ah, and he's ready to roar
    (Party)

  • Written during the height of the Cold War, this party jam has a much deeper meaning, as Prince was expressing his fears of a nuclear Armageddon. Under the Reagan administration, the United States was stockpiling nuclear weapons and taking a hawkish stance against the Soviet Union, which he referred to as the "Evil Empire." In this song, Prince sings about enjoying our time on earth while we still can, since by year 2000, we probably won't be here ("Everybody's got a bomb, we could all die any day").
  • The first single released from the album of the same name, it didn't make it into the Top 40 on the first attempt, but did upon re-release after "Little Red Corvette" hit the Top 10.
  • Prince re-recorded this in 1998 after leaving Warner Brothers Records, who retained rights to the original recording. Prince hated Warner Brothers, and re-recorded it in an attempt to keep them from profiting from the original version. The new version was a minor hit at the beginning of 1999.
  • According to Rolling Stone magazine, Prince originally recorded the opening verse in three-part harmony. Later he split up the vocals, and the harmony parts became a new melody. When Prince recorded this track, he would go all day and all night without rest, and turn down food since he felt eating would make him sleepy.
  • This is credited to "Prince And The Revolution." The Revolution was his backup band at the time. The lead female vocal was by Jill Jones, who was a member of the band. She also appeared in Prince's movies Purple Rain and Graffiti Bridge.
  • 1999 was Prince's fifth album. His first four sold fairly well, but this one was a huge hit, marking his first entry into the Billboard 200 chart (peaking at #9) and becoming certified four times Platinum. It was the fifth best-selling album of 1983.
  • On January 16, 1999, the song spent a week on the Hot 100 at #40, thus making it the only entry to appear on the US singles chart in the year synonymous with its title. Here are four others with the year they charted in brackets: James Blunt "1973" (2007), Smashing Pumpkins "1979" (1996), Spirit "1984" (1970) and Bowling for Soup "1985" (2007). Also Estelle's 1980 was a #14 hit in the UK in 2004.
  • Many listeners, including Phil Collins, have compared this song to Collins' similar-sounding "Sussudio," released three years later. The singer admitted he was a big Prince fan and often listened to the 1999 album while on tour.

    Hello, How are you?
    You're looking so fine
    No, it's true
Remember the time we first met?
You think that was good? You ain't seen nothin' yet

Like a bee to some honey
    A moth to a flame
You got an addiction and you got me to blame
You never saw it comin' 'cause I made no claims 'til now
You can call it the unexpected or you can call it WOW
You can call it call it wow
You can call it call it call it wow
You can call it the unexpected or you can call it call it call it

    Sorry, I don't know
    What came over me
The cycle of the moon affects the motion of the see what you did
    It's starting all over again
We both want it now more than we did back then

Like a bee to some honey
    A moth to a flame
You got an addiction and you got me to blame
You never saw it comin' 'cause I made no claims 'til now
You can call it the unexpected or you can call it wow

    Give me a minute
    Let me get myself together
I'm never really out of control
    Really, I'm so much better
Maybe it's your eyes, your stare, lookin' like lookin' like you wanna go somewhere
    You wanna go somewhere?
Somethin' 'bout the wild in me, it's never tame
I think we're both alike, this is how we became

Like a bee to some honey
    A moth to a flame
You got an addiction and you got me to blame.
You never saw it comin' 'cause I made no claims 'til now

  • This is the opening track of PLECTRUMELECTRUM, an album recorded live by Prince with his all-female backing band 3rd Eye Girl. The tune was adapted from "The Unexpected," a song the Purple maestro wrote for his protégé, the New Power Generation backing singer, Liv Warfield. "The girls said they would kill me if I didn't give it to them," Prince told Mojo magazine.

  • Prince told Mojo magazine that this gentle ballad with layers of overlapping sounds was inspired by the Scottish dream pop band Cocteau Twins.

"We recorded it in Bryan Ferry's studio in London, after a night of partying for which the Cocteau Twins was the soundtrack," he explained. "You can't understand the words of Cocteau Twins songs but their harmonies put you in a dreamlike state."
