The rain is here, and you, my dear, are still my friend It's true two of us are back as one again I was the one who left you Always coming back I cannot forget you, girl Now I am Up In Arms again
The rain is here, and you, my dear, are still my friend It's true, the two of us are back as one again I was the one who left you Always coming back I cannot forget you, girl Now I am up in arms again
Together now, I don't know how this love could end My lonely heart, it falls apart for you to mend I was the one who left you
Always coming back I cannot forget you, girl Now I am up in arms again I was the one who left you
Always coming back I cannot forget you, girl Now I am up in arms again I was the one who left you
Always coming back I cannot forget you, girl Now I am up in arms again

Up In Arms
This is a fairly typical love song. Dave Grohl states, "It's almost like a Knack song, just a simple pop song."
Before Foo Fighters played this song on an MTV special, Grohl said: "That's a cute little love song about my wife."
Foo Fighters' first drummer, William Goldsmith, played drums in the slow intro to this song, as well as on "Doll" and the verses of "My Poor Brain" before he left the band. Dave Grohl played drums on the rest of the album.
This is the sound The here and the now You got to talk the talk, the talk, the talk To get it all out
I listen I listen I listen
But you're out of tune You're so out of tune
This is The Last Song (This is the last song) This is the last song That I will dedicate to you
Something I've found Yea, That want to turn around You got to walk the walk, the walk, the walk To make any ground
You're pushing You're pushing You're pushing
But there ain't no room No there ain't no room
This is the last song (This is the last song) This is the last song (This is the last song) That I will dedicate to you I made my peace And now I'm trough This is the last song That I will dedicate to you
And yours is a name I will never name again I will never name again
We pretend it doesn't matter We pretend it all away We pretend it all away
We pretend We pretend We pretend
But it ain't no use This is the last song (This is the last song) This is the last song (This is the last song) That I will dedicate to you I made my peace And now I'm through
This is the last song That I will dedicate to you To you To you To you

The Last Song
This song is often interpreted to be about Dave Grohl letting go of Kurt Cobain, being the last song he writes about him. Cobain has been dead for a while, and he's spoken out about his feelings in songs about Kurt, but it's getting sort of old now. Grohl would try to write new songs, but everyone keeps relating them to Kurt Cobain no matter what he writes them about. He's made peace with Kurt's spirit and won't dwell on Kurt's death any more.
Drummer Taylor Hawkins: "It's what Breakout should have sounded like. A lot of things on this record to me are what a lot of old past songs should have sounded like. With this record we worked on everything without beating the hell out of it; just getting the best, most intense, energetic performances."
The Foo Fighters often play on The Late Show with David Letterman, and the band played this song on Letterman the night before the new album came out.
Come and I'll take you under This beautiful bruises colors Everything fades in time, it's true
Wish that I had another Stab at the under cover Was it a change in mind for you?
It's impossible I can't let it out You'll never know Am I selling you out? Sit and watch Your every mood
Your eyes still remind me of Angels that hover above Eyes that can change from blind to blue
Now that I've found my reward Throw it away long before I'd share a piece of mine with you

When Dave Grohl was young, his best friend was a kid who lived across the street named Johnny Park. Grohl hadn't heard from him since he was about 14 years old, and thought if he named a song after him he might call. (from www.fooarchive.com thanks, Bert - Pueblo, NM)
I, I'm a one way motorway I'm the one that drives away Then follows you back home I, I'm a street light shining I'm a wild light blinding bright Burning off alone
It's Times Like These you learn to live again It's times like these you give and give again It's times like these you learn to love again It's times like these time and time again
I, I'm a new day rising I'm a brand new sky To hang the stars upon tonight I am a little divided Do I stay or run away And leave it all behind?
It's times like these you learn to live again It's times like these you give and give again It's times like these you learn to love again It's times like these time and time again
It's times like these you learn to live again It's times like these you give and give again It's times like these you learn to love again It's times like these time and time again
It's times like these you learn to live again It's times like these you give and give again It's times like these you learn to love again It's times like these time and time again

Times Like These
At the time, Dave Grohl called this "The best song I've ever written." The rousing track became a live favorite for the band, and one of five songs in their set when they performed at the Live Earth concert at Wembley Stadium in London, to a crowd of about 80,000.
The song finds Dave Grohl at a crossroads, but confident he will find the right path. The One by One sessions were a slog, and they made him question the band's future:
I am a little divided Do I stay or run away And leave it all behind?
But then he assures himself that these trials are for the best, as he will emerge stronger:
It's times like these you learn to live again
The Foo Fighters performed this song on the February 22, 2003 episode of Saturday Night Live. During the performance, Jim Carrey ran onto the stage, strummed his leg like a guitar, and then dove offstage.
This song was used at some of George W. Bush's presidential campaign rallies in 2004. Dave Grohl never wanted to get involved in politics, but since he despised Bush, he decided to campaign for Bush's rival in the election, John Kerry.
"I was personally offended that George Bush was using 'Times Like These,'" Grohl said. "I know what I'm singing about and it basically mirrored what John Kerry's campaign was trying to represent.
Stirred into action, Grohl joined Kerry on some of his campaign stops, typically performing some acoustic songs before Kerry spoke. The experience had a profound effect on Grohl and inspired many of the songs that would end up on the next Foo Fighters album, In Your Honor which was named in tribute to Kerry.
Hey you Are you in there I'm stuck outside you, ooh We could use One another Another like you, ooh
You be my passerby I'll be your one to pass through Screws inside Turn so tight Turning on you I'm hanging on you, ooh
Me and you Going nowhere I'm right beside you, ooh Me and you Going nowhere I'm right beside you, ooh
You be my passerby I'll be your one to pass through Screws inside Turn so tight Turning on you I'm hanging on you
Taking you as Low as you go As low as you go Taking you as low as you go As low as you go Ooh, ooh, ooh
You be my passerby I'll be your one to pass through Screws inside Turn so tight Turning on you I'm hanging on you
Taking you as low as you go (Low as you go) As low as you go (Low as you go) Taking you as low as you go (Low as you go) As low as you go (Low as you go) As low as you go Low as you go Ooh, ooh

Low
Jack Black stars in the video with Dave Grohl. The pair play rednecks who meet up in a motel room, at first doing manly things, but then messing about in women's clothes and having a night of debauchery.
Black had previously appeared in the Foo Fighters video for "Learn to Fly" along with his Tenacious D partner Kyle Gass; both clips were directed by ex-Lemonhead Jesse Peretz. Grohl appeared in the Tenacious D video for "Tribute" in 2001.
This is one of what Dave Grohl considers the "four good songs" on the One by One album, which was a tedious one to record. The other three are "All My Life," "Times Like These" and "Tired Of You."
Tie up the transmission This one is not a test Silent all these years But now I'm getting you off my chest Reeling in the moment, I know it will never last Tired of keepin' quiet, Riding with all the rest
Stuck in the middle no-ones making a move I'm looking in and I've got nothing to lose
I will comeback, I will comeback I will comeback, I will comeback I will comeback, I will comeback I will comeback, I will comeback for you For you
Hide behind obsessions, I'm trying to keep in check Ride you for the finish We're coming?? Reeling in the moment I know it will never last Rise up to the surface High but I'm sinking fast
Stuck in the middle no-ones making a move I'm looking in and I've got nothing to lose
I will comeback, I will comeback I will comeback, I will comeback I will comeback, I will comeback I will comeback, I will comeback for you
Stuck in the middle no-ones making a move I'm looking in and I've got nothing to lose
I will comeback, I will comeback I will comeback I will comeback I will comeback I will comeback I will comeback I will comeback I will comeback I will comeback I will comeback I will comeback I will comeback I will comeback I will comeback, I will comeback for you

Dave Grohl: "Sometimes I'd just spit out lyrics onto paper and other times I'd overanalyze and lose the plot. I didn't realize that there was a sort of a line running through everything, but now, with the album sequenced, it kind of makes sense. It begins with 'All My Life' and ends with 'Come Back' and throughout the album, it is basically just like the difficult beginnings of falling in love, and then the relief of feeling comfortable in love. I'm a sappy romantic, so - it's tough, man, I swear, but I'm not ashamed." (thanks, Beth - MN)
When I talk about it It carries on Reasons only knew When I talk about it Aries or treasons All renew
Big Me to talk about it I could stand to prove If we can get around it I know that it's true
When I talked about it Carried on Reasons only knew
But it's you I fell into
When I talk about it It carries on Reasons only knew When I talk about it Aries or treasons All renew
Big me to talk about it I could stand to prove If we can get around it I know that it's true
Well I talked about it Put it on Never was it true But it's you I fell into
Well I talked about it Put it on Never was it true But it's you I fell into
I fell into I fell into

Big Me
This song is about being dumped. Lead Foo Dave Grohl broke it down: "Girl meets boy, boy falls in love, girl tells him to f--k off!"
The video is a takeoff on Mentos commercials. Mentos are mint candies that come in tubes. They are made in Europe, and the commercials had a campy feel that became a big part of pop culture in the US. In each spot, someone gets a moment of inspiration after eating a mint and is then able to overcome some obstacle. In one spot, a woman's car is boxed in, so she gets some burly construction workers to pick it up and move it for her. In another, a kid acts like a roadie to get backstage at a concert.
The video shows the band in similar situations, solving problems with the aid of their own special candy called Foo-tos. Unfortunately for The Foo Fighters, Mentos make great projectiles and for years fans would throw the candy at them when they played this. It won the 1996 MTV Video Music Award for Best Group Video.
Grohl wrote this and many other songs on the album when he was still the drummer for Nirvana. Kurt Cobain knew he wanted to pursue projects outside of Nirvana, and had no problem with it. (thanks, Mark - Chicago, IL)
This song was often covered by Weezer when the Foo Fighters and Weezer toured together in 2005. (thanks, Bert - Pueblo, NM)
The Foo Fighters released an acoustic version with Petra Haden singing with Dave Grohl for their 2006 live CD Skin and Bones.
In the video for the Foo Fighters song "Monkey Wrench," which Grohl directed, a soothing version of "Big Me" plays as elevator music. Grohl commissioned the electronic act The Moog Cookbook, which had covered "Smells Like Teen Spirit" to his liking, to create this rendition for the video. The full electro version of "Big Me" can be heard on the Moog Cookbook compilation album Bartell. (thanks, Bertrand - Paris, France, for above 2)
That night they were burning for truth Down on the corner of 14th and U They took your soul and they took you for fools Took all the windows from prisons and schools Now what's a poor man left to do?
One heart now broken in two You start untying the hands of the youth New kids hear the sound of the drumming Mother Nature your Summer is coming Yesterday and today Revolution on its way
Crossroads with nothing to lose Out of the basement and in to the news Come change, now shit getting heavy Salvation at the ready You look when I walked by Still screaming 'til I die You can't find peace if you can't find a home You can't survive as an island alone Black heart with a gaping wound Put back together by a troubled groove Check yourself Wreck your brains Where is that P.M.A.?
Amen It was The Feast and the Famine Amen It was The Feast and the Famine Feast and the Famine
Hey, where is the monument? To the dreams we forget? We need a monument And change will come Yeah change will come Is there anybody there? (Anybody there?) Anybody there? (Anybody there?) There?

This is a song from Sonic Highways, an album containing eight songs, each laid down in a different US city. The band would start recording in the studio during the day at each location and then in the evenings, Dave Grohl would interview various local musicians. By day four or five the Foo Fighters frontman would pour over the interview transcripts and outline the songs he wanted to write. Grohl explained to Jimmy Fallon, "I would pick out words, phrases and sentences from the interviews."
He added: "It was meant to represent that whole week we had been there by telling the stories of the people I had talked to."
This track was laid down at Inner Ear Studios, Arlington, Washington DC.
The song features Bad Brains as the Foo Fighters' guest of honor. The band formed in Washington DC in 1977 and are widely regarded as among the pioneers of hardcore punk.
I'm in the sky tonight There I can keep by your side Watching the wide world riot And hiding out I'll be coming home Next Year
Into the sun we climb Climbing our wings will burn white Everyone strapped in tight We'll ride it out I'll be coming home next year
Come on, get on, get on Take it till life runs out No-one can find us now Living with our heads underground
Into the night we shine Lighting the way we glide by Catch me if I get too high When I come down I'll be coming home next year
I'm in the sky tonight There I can keep by your side Watching the whole world wind Around and round I'll be coming home next year
Come on, get on, get on Take it till I fall down No one can find us now Living with our heads underground
I'll be coming home next year I'll be coming home next year Everything's all right up here When I come down I'll be coming home next year
Say goodbye Say goodbye Say goodbye Say goodbye

Next Year Song Chart
This was the theme song to the NBC TV show Ed, about a lawyer who moves to a small town and buys a bowling alley. It was replaced after the first season with "Moment In The Sun" by Clem Snide.
Well, I met the seventh son He came for everyone The day he heard the lighting in the field I heard him clear his throat A fork within the road That night the Tallahatchie took the wheel
I’ve been throwing knives To see just where they land Now my world is in your hands
Send in the Congregation Open your eyes, step in the light A jukebox generation Just as you were
The voice upon the stage Is the heart inside a cage And they’re singing like a bluebird in the round There’s mystery in this wood And ghosts within these roots That are tangled deep beneath this southern ground
I've been going through life Making foolish plans Now my world is in your hands
Send in the congregation Open your eyes, step in the light A jukebox generation Just as you were
And you need blind faith No false hope Do you have blind faith? No false hope Where is your blind faith? No false hope Open your eyes, open your eyes Step into the light Open your eyes, step into the light The sound becomes
Congregation A congregation A congregation, yeah And they're singing like a bluebird in the round

This is a track from Sonic Highways, an album containing eight songs, each recorded in a different US city. This cut was recorded in Nashville, Tennessee. Bassist Nate Mendel told NME: "The song 'Congregation' is a play on how a lot of the folks in the Nashville country music scene came together in church, in a sort of gospel environment, to learn their craft."
The song features guitars and backing vocals from Zac Brown of the Zac Brown Band. Dave Grohl previously collaborated with the country group when he produced and played drums on their 2012 The Grohl Sessions, Vol. 1 EP. The Foo Fighters frontman told Q magazine of their original collaboration: "Zac Brown is an enormous country star. I met him in a store and he asked me to produce an album. I'd never heard of him. I said to someone, Zac Brown has asked me to produce him' - they said, 'You should do it, he's huge' So I did the record without hearing any of his songs."
There are days I might not make it There are days I might start brakin’ When the rain starts coming down as heavy as the air You can find me dancing with the spear It’s in the square god damn I swear
There are times I feel like givin' in There are times I begin to begin again Look outside the world keeps spinning like a paddle wheel Rolling for the broken hearted waiting on the heel
You know I'm not In The Clear You are not in the clear Don’t you go count me out now dear
You know I'm not in the clear You are not in the clear Don’t you go count me out now dear
In the clear
There are places I don't remember There are faces I don't remember How could I forget you painted stars into the sky Coming like a reaper marching in the second life
You know I'm not in the clear You are not in the clear Don’t you go count me out now dear
You know I'm not in the clear You are not in the clear Don’t you go count me out now dear
In the clear
And if I should drown May this be the sound To wash me out!
You know I'm not in the clear You are not in the clear Don’t you go count me out now dear
You know I'm not in the clear You are not in the clear Don’t you go count me out now dear

The Foo Fighters recorded each track for Sonic Highways in a different US city. This tune was recorded in New Orleans' Preservation Hall, the Big Easy's home of jazz.
The Pulse of Radio asked Foo bassist Nate Mendel which of the city's that the band visited was his favorite. "It's New Orleans, 'cause it's such a unique town and we — we just had fun there really, is what it came down to," he replied. "It wasn't a studio, we were in the Preservation Hall, which seems like it's a movie set — it doesn't even seem like a real building. And yeah, we just did things that like are so far out of our normal orbit of experience as a band."
This song features Preservation Hall Jazz Band who opened the Foo Fighters' surprise show at New Orleans' Preservation Hall in May 2014.
There you go again Putting words into my mouth This one's for you to know And for me to find out
All that trouble, and you on about How you gonna know, til you hear it out loud Stop, ask myself what did I do? What did I do to deserve you? Come on, tell me now what did I do? What did I do to deserve you?
I heard every word comin' from the 13th floor Your song came along And I heard the voices telling me to save yourself I'll behave yourself
I stop, ask myself what did I do? What can I do to preserve you? Come on, tell me now, what can I do? What can I do to conserve you?
Your name, year of fame I could see the writing on the wall Come on, flip a coin, bet it's going to tell you To save yourself, I'll behave yourself
Your man, channelin', knowin' by the X on his hand You raise, runaways singin' at the gate To save yourself, I'll behave yourself
So here I go again Putting words into your mouth This one's for me to know And for you to find out
All that trouble and I'm on about How you gonna know, til you hear it out loud All of your heroes, where are they now?
I'm lost, deliver me I crossed the river finally God as my witness Yeah it's gonna heal my soul tonight God as my witness Yeah it's gonna heal my soul tonight God as my witness Yeah it's gonna heal my soul tonight
God as my witness Yeah you gonna heal my soul tonight God as my witness Yeah you gonna heal my soul tonight

This is from Sonic Highways, for which the Foo Fighters recorded each track in a different US city. Dave Grohl approached his songwriting differently to previous records, interviewing musicians from each place and using their quotes in the the tunes, completing the lyrics just before recording his vocals. Drummer Taylor Hawkins stated that it gave the Foo Fighters frontman a new focus. He explained: "Dave said he was going to take sentences from the interviews and write a song. I was like, 'That seems really difficult,' but it's given him a whole new way of writing lyrics."
This two-part song was recorded at KLRU-TV Studio 6A in Austin, Texas and features blues rocker Gary Clark, Jr on lead guitar.
