Goodness Gracious

This Electro, tropically-infused tune finds Goulding singing about attempting to break free from a relationship but unable to sever the ties. She penned the song with Fun frontman Nate Ruess, who also co-wrote Pink's "Just Give Me A Reason" and Kesha's "Die Young." Goulding told Coup De Main magazine about their collaboration: "In Australia we first met and we hung out loads, and it turned out we were big fans of each other's writing," she said. "Sadly, we didn't get to write the song in the same room which was a shame, but he wrote his bit and I wrote my bit and I sent it back to him to see what he thought and thank goodness he liked it, because that would have been embarrassing if he didn't."

The collaboration between Ruess and Goulding didn't begin too promisingly. The Fun frontman avoided the English singer in a hotel lobby, only to sheepishly email her working together hours later. "We did a tour together in Australia, the Future of Music Tour, myself, Fun., Azealia Banks and a few other artists," Goulding explained to MTV News. "He walked past me in a hotel lobby, and then e-mailed me and was like 'I just walked past you and was too shy to say hello.' And I was like 'I was too shy too!'"

"And then we hung out and instantly hit it off. I think he's an amazing songwriter, and I love the way he writes lyrics. We went running and then we decided we wanted to write together," she continued. "We realized we had very similar taste in music, and we just wanted to do something, we didn't care what it was."

Goulding told Rolling Stone about this ode to fickleness. "I've been in situations where I knew someone wasn't right for me, yet I kept bringing them back," she said "The song is about dissing yourself for not thinking straight and not being fair."

Hearts Without Chains

Goulding penned this breathless ballad with songwriter Fraser T Smith, who also co-penned Adele's hit single "Set Fire to the Rain." Smith was also responsible for producing UK chart-toppers for Tinchy Stryder ("Never Leave You," "Number 1"), Pixie Lott ("Boys and Girls") and Taio Cruz ("Break Your Heart").

This piano-backed ballad finds Goulding crooning about the misery of a long distance relationship. Her lover (most likely American electronic musician Skrillex) is about to fly away to New York and the misery she feels is "weightless as a stone." "It's my favorite song of the batch," she told Rolling Stone. "It has a folky English quality to it. Plus, it's quite nice to listen to and not be in the state I was when I wrote it."

Beating Heart

Ellie Goulding wrote this song specifically for the soundtrack of the movie Divergent. Goulding also lent three of her Halcyon tracks to the film as well as providing the "musical voice" for the film's lead character, Tris Prior.

Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Divergent director Neil Burger explained Goulding's new song: "In the last scene of the movie, Tris has just experienced multiple tragedies, even as she triumphs (for the moment) over her enemies," he said. "Ellie wrote 'Beating Heart' and we knew it'd be perfect for the end of the movie. Her lyrics almost merge with Tris' voice-over and her music lets the movie soar above the tragedy. The sadness is still there but so is the transcendence. It's a fantastic song."

Goulding explained the song's meaning to MTV News: "'Beating Heart' is about being away from someone or knowing that you're always going to have to be apart from someone that you really love," she said. "And it's painful, but it's hopeful because there's always a chance that they'll collide again like two people collide. Like the universe will bring them back together."

"I think the song is basically that," she added. "Sort of relying on the fact that if you're meant to be drawn back together you will be."

British singer-songwriter Joe Janiak wrote the original version of this song on a banjo in 2012. It was inspired by dropping off his American girlfriend at London airport. Goulding then came across the tune and reworked some of the lyrics to make it about being away touring and not being able to spend enough time with someone.

Although Goulding doesn't specify the partner that the track is connected to, she admitted to Billboard magazine that it, "did remind me of someone, recently." She added: "It's just such a sad song, and so relevant to what I do — not being able to have a physical closeness with someone, because you're just never around."

My Blood

Most of the tracks on Halcyon are breakup songs penned by Goulding about her former partner, BBC Radio 1 DJ Greg James. However, she wrote this gothic tune about being weakened by somebody emotionally in the midst of a relationship.

The song features on the soundtrack of the movie, Divergent. It is one of a quartet of Goulding tunes that are woven into the action of the film. The singer also provided the "musical voice" for lead character Tris Prior (played by Shailene Woodley). "For me, the movie is about a young woman finding herself, transforming herself and becoming powerful on a societal stage," explained director Neil Burger to Entertainment Weekly. "It's an intimate, personal portrait, but on a grand scale. Ellie's music has that very intimate quality. You are in the heart of her characters, in their souls, in their minds. When she sings her voice resonates inside you. Her music was a perfect way to do all that for Tris - to feel what she was feeling inside."
