Shadow

Simpson wrote the lyrics about living in the shadow of her older sister Jessica. On her appearance on Live With Regis And Kelly, Simpson said: "It's really about dealing with myself and dealing with the voice in your head that's like, 'Oh, everything has to be so perfect, and I have to be like this,' and finding my identity and saying, 'OK, you know, this is who I am, you know, imperfections and all, and I love myself for me, and here I am.'"

Boyfriend

The lyrics of the song consist of Simpson insisting to another girl that "You really got it wrong, I didn't steal your boyfriend." Simpson has denied rumors that the song refers to an alleged relationship with actor Wilmer Valderrama, ex-boyfriend of Lindsay Lohan, saying It's a song making fun of how every girl out there sometimes thinks you stole her boyfriend.

The video starts off with police pursuing Simpson in a car chase. Eventually she evades them and reaches a junkyard, where she and her band perform the song before a crowd of young people. At the end of the video Simpson jumps into the arms of Efren Ramirez (who plays "Pedro" in the movie Napoleon Dynamite) and he carries her away.

Ashlee Simpson told Associated Content about this song: "It's about taking something real life and making fun of it, making it fun. There was some Hollywood drama a couple years ago and I just to hell with it and wrote about what was going on."

Pieces Of Me

John Shanks wrote this with Kara DioGuardi. They came up with the song after Simpson told them, "I have all these sides to me, and my boyfriend doesn't understand." Shanks has written and produced hits for many young female singers, including Hilary Duff, Michelle Branch, Kelly Clarkson and Lindsay Lohan.

In October, 2004, Simpson was the musical guest on Saturday Night Live when she was caught lip-synching to this. She performed this as her first song, but later in the show she was supposed to sing "Autobiography." This song started playing instead, and while Simpson looked dumbfounded, her vocals came on, clearly indicating she was lip-synching. She walked off stage while the band kept pretending to play, and NBC went to commercial. At the end of the show, she said her band started playing the wrong song, and later claimed she lip-synched because she was suffering from acid reflux. The incident was captured by a news crew who was doing a story on Saturday Night Live for 60 Minutes. When asked about Simpson, SNL producer Lorne Michaels claimed he expected her to sing, and musical guests were only allowed to augment their vocals if dancing was involved. Michaels was clearly not happy about the incident, and they made fun of Simpson the next week.
