Breakaway

Avril Lavigne wrote the lyrics to this song, which she worked on with professional songwriters Matthew Gerrard and B. Beneate. It was intended for Lavigne's second album, Under My Skin, but she didn't think it fit the album and let Clarkson record it as a single. The song did so well that at the last minute, Clarkson's second album was renamed Breakaway and this song was included on it.

The song is about breaking away from an old life and trying new things. Some may even consider it a song about growing up, and that could be true in some ways, but it is mostly about shedding your past and becoming a new person. The theme appealed to Clarkson, who could relate to the lyrics.

This song was used in the movie The Princess Diaries 2.

Gerrard explained to Songwriter Universe Magazine: "The song was originally written for Avril (Lavigne), it was inspired by her. As it turned out, it wasn't quite right for Avril's album, so we pitched it to Kelly Clarkson. It all worked out great. Kelly sounds great singing it, and it was a big hit for us."

Clarkson calls this "The song for everyone going out on their own." She relates it to when she moved from a small town in Texas to Los Angeles, where against the odds she became a star.

Behind These Hazel Eyes

This is a true song about Clarkson's ex boyfriend, who broke up with her and got married a month later. The song is about being hurt by someone you were once close to.

The song almost didn't make it to the album. It had different lyrics, but Kelly thought of new lyrics at the last minute.

The video is based heavily on Clarkson's own personal experiences. She is credited with the concept and ideas behind it; it was directed by Joseph Kahn. The video did very well on MTV's TRL, becoming a regular #1 request. Finally, fifty days later, on August 3, 2005, the video was retired from the Top 10 countdown. Clarkson holds the record for the longest stay by a female at #1 with 33 days, nearly surpassing the record previously set by The Backstreet Boys.

Because Of You

Clarkson wrote this about her parents' divorce when she was 6 years old. The song might be aimed at her mom. When the divorce happened, her mom was always busy and little Kelly had to make sandwiches for herself to eat.

In the song, Clarkson sings about trying not to make the same mistakes her parents did, and how because of the divorce, she is scared to fall in love, in fear of going through the same pain her parents did.

On her Breakaway DVD, Clarkson explains that she started writing this long before she won American Idol. Kelly was 16 when she was with friends one night and they were talking about the influence that older people/peers have on you and started writing it. She sent a demo tape of the song to producers David Hodges and Ben Moody (formerly of Evanescence), who liked the song and worked on it with her.

Clarkson told Entertainment Weekly why she'd like to be remembered for this song in a 2011 interview: "I think because I worked so damn hard to get it on an album and just everyone was against it. There was some blood, sweat and tears going on there. I think I'm most proud of that song—just getting it on an album because no one liked it until it hit # 1 worldwide and everybody was on board."

Clarkson told the UK newspaper The Guardian: "You may as well grab a knife. That song really is the most depressing one I've ever written. I tried to get it on Thankful, and was laughed at and told I wasn't a good writer. So then I tried to get it on Breakaway – and the label saw the results, people responding to it, and allowed it to become a single. Then took credit for its success, of course."

Clarkson revealed that she burst into tears after playing this song for the first time to Sony record executive Clive Davis. "I cried because he hated it and told me verbatim that I was a 'sh--ty writer who should be grateful for the gifts that he bestows upon me,'" she said. "He continued on about how the song didn't rhyme and how I should just shut up and sing. This was devastating coming from a man who I, as a young girl, considered a musical hero and was so honored to work with."

Clarkson (from Entertainment Weekly, September 2, 2005): "Hazel Eyes is about the dipstick who completely screwed up and now is unhappy and you're happy. And then you're just shouting praises at the fact that he's miserable in Since U Been Gone."

The music video for this song is about a girl going into her ex-boyfriend's house and destroying everything. It's what everyone wants to do in that situation but isn't crazy enough to do it.

This won a Grammy for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance.

With two Grammy Awards from this album, Clarkson is the most successful winner of American Idol to date.

This song almost didn't make it onto the Breakaway album; when Clarkson heard the first, acoustic version of the song, she didn't like it. It wasn't until it was given a rocking treatment that she warmed to the song.

This was written and produced by Lukasz "Dr. Luke" Gottwald and Max Martin. Gottwald recalled the genesis of the song to Billboard magazine: "That was a conscious move by Max and myself, because we were listening to alternative and indie music and talking about some song-I don't remember what it was. I said, 'Ah, I love this song,' and Max was like, 'If they would just write a damn pop chorus on it!' It was driving him nuts, because that indie song was sort of on six, going to seven, going to eight, the chorus comes . . . and it goes back down to five. It drove him crazy. And when he said that, it was like, light bulb. 'Why don't we do that, but put a big chorus on it?' It worked."

It was Sony Music chief creative officer Clive Davis' idea to give the song to Clarkson, but Martin and Gottwald, certain that they had written a rock hit, were initially reluctant. "They weren't prepared for the casting idea," Davis recalled to Billboard magazine. "Max was looking to move on from what he had done with Backstreet Boys, and I really spent time convincing them that an American Idol winner could bring all the feeling and passion that was required to the song."

Clive Davis claimed in his memoir, The Soundtrack of My Life, that Clarkson burst into 'hysterical sobbing' in his office when he demanded that this song be included on her album.

"Not true at all," Clarkson responded. "His stories and songs are mixed up. I did want more guitars added to the original demo and Clive did not. Max, Luke and I still fought for the bigger sound and we prevailed and I couldn't be more proud of the life of that song. I resent him dampening that song in any way."

Ester Dean and Skylar Astin perform the song during the audition sequences of the 2012 musical comedy film, Pitch Perfect.

Dr. Luke and Max Martin originally wrote the song with Pink in mind, but she turned it down. They then reached out to Hilary Duff but she rejected the song because she couldn't reach its higher notes. Clive Davis then convinced the producers to give the song to Clarkson.
