A Sign Of The Times Lyrics

It's A Sign Of The Times
That your love for me is getting so much stronger
It's a sign of the times
And I know that I won't have to wait much longer
You've changed a lot somehow from the one I used to know
For when you hold me now, it feels like you never want to let me go

It's a sign of the times
That you call me up whenever you feel lonely
It's a sign of the times
That you tell your friends that I'm your one and only
I'll never understand the way you treated me
But when I hold your hand, I know you couldn't be the way you used to be

Maybe my lucky star at last decided to shine
Maybe somebody knows how long I've waited to make you mine, mmh

I'll never understand the way you treated me
But when I hold your hand, I know you couldn't be the way you used to be

Maybe my lucky star at last decided to shine
Maybe somebody knows how long I've waited to make you mine

It's a sign of the times
That you kiss me now as if you really mean it
It's a sign of the times
And a year ago I never could have seen it
Don't ever change your mind and take your love away
Just leave the past behind and, baby, only think of how it is today

It's a sign of the times
It's a sign of the times
It's a sign of the times
It's a sign of the times

It's a sign of the times

A Sign Of The Times
  • You would expect a song from the '60s called "A Sign Of The Times" to have a heavy political or social context, kind like the Prince song with a similar title. There is no weighty meaning in this one, however, as Petula sings about a guy who has finally stopped neglecting her, and she couldn't be happier. Like most of Petula's hits, it was written by the British songwriter Tony Hatch.
  • In our 2013 interview with Petula Clark , we asked her what she thought of this song when she heard it. "I loved it," she replied. "It had a slightly different feel. 'A Sign of the Times,' I suppose you might expect some big political statement or something, but it was just a straight ahead love song. I think Tony [Hatch] rather liked finding titles that made you think, like 'Don't Sleep In The Subway.' People would think, is it about drugs? Is it about this? And these were just straightforward songs."
  • In 1999, this song was used in a commercial for the department store of Target, emphasizing how the store has changed with the times.

    My Love Lyrics

My Love is warmer than the warmest sunshine
    Softer than a sigh.
My love is deeper than the deepest ocean
    Wider than the sky.
My love is brighter than the brightest star
    That shines every night above
And there is nothing in this world
That can ever change my love

Something happened to my heart the day that I met you
Something that I never felt before
You are always on my mind no matter what I do
And everyday it seems that I want you more

My love is warmer than the warmest sunshine
    Softer than a sigh.
My love is deeper than the deepest ocean
    Wider than the sky.
My love is brighter than the brightest star
    That shines every night above
And there is nothing in this world
That can ever change my love
Once I thought that love was meant for anyone else but me
Once I thought you'd never come my way
Now it only goes to show how wrong we all can be
For now I have to tell you everyday

My love is warmer than the warmest sunshine
    Softer than a sigh
My love is deeper than the deepest ocean
    Wider than the sky
My love is brighter than the brightest star
    That shines every night above
And there is nothing in this world
That can ever change my love
My love is warmer than the warmest sunshine
    Softer than a sigh
My love is deeper than the deepest ocean
    Wider than the sky
My love is brighter than the brightest star
    That shines every night above
And there is nothing in this world
That can ever change my love

    My Love Song Chart
  • This was Clark's second #1 hit in the US. She was the first British solo act to have two #1 singles in the States. Her first #1 was "Downtown," released the previous year.
  • Tony Hatch wrote this song as he flew from London to Los Angeles, where Clark recorded it. The air travel have him the idea for the idea of love transcending distance.
  • This was one of three songs Clark recorded at the session, and she hated it. She had to leave right after she was done with her vocals, but on the way out implored her American record label representative, Joe Smith, not to release "My Love." Smith, sensing a hit, put it out anyway, telling Petula, "Trust me, baby." He was right about he song being a hit, but this didn't appease Petula, who now had to perform it. When we asked her in 2013 why she didn't like the song, Petula explained: "I thought it was a bit ordinary. I had got so used to these wonderful songs that Tony [Hatch] had been writing with all these different moods and I thought it was just a bit flat. You know what, I still do. But I do sing it now. For a long time I wouldn't sing it on stage, but I sort of play around with it a little bit now and that makes it a bit easier for me to do it." (Here's our full Petula Clark interview .)
