Exposure Song Chart
  • This was heavily influenced by Robert Fripp, who got a composer credit. Fripp, formerly guitarist for King Crimson, produced Gabriel's second album over the objections of Atlantic Records, which thought his techniques would not be commercially successful. The album had poor sales.
  • Fripp named his 1979 solo album Exposure after this.
  • There arn't many lyrics, but they refer to the media invading Gabriel's privacy.
  • The drums were double-tracked and range across the stereo spectrum.
  • This is part of Gabriel's story of Mozo, a mercurial stranger who would come and go, changing people's lives. Mozo would appear in "On The Air," "Down The Dolce Vita," "Here Comes The Flood", "Red Rain," and "That Voice Again," but the Mozo story as a stage production or movie as Gabriel intended never developed.

    On The Air Lyrics

Built in the belly of junk by the river my cabin stands
Made from the trash I dug out 'the heap, with my own fair hands
Every night, I'm back at the shack and I'm sure no one is there
I'm putting the aerial up, so I can go out On The Air

    On the air
    On the air
    On the air

Every morning I'm out at dawn with the dwarfs and the tramp
For a silent communion lit from above by the sodium lamps
Everyone I meet on the street acts as if I wasn't there
But they're all going to know who I am 'cause I can go out on the air

    On the air
    On the air
    On the air

Leaving the car down leafy lane
Turning out Tarzan for my Jungle Jane
    anyone at all
From Captain Zero and his brand of superhero
    standing by a call
    Oh it's not easy
    No it's not easy
    Making real friends

Don't give me your steak-reared milk boys, milk boys
Half alive on empty white noise, white noise
I got power, I'm proud to be loud; my signal goes out clear
I want everybody to know that Mozo is here

    On the air
    On the air
    On the air

    On The Air Song Chart
  • Introduces Mozo, a mercurial stranger who would come and go, changing people's lives. The character would appear in "Down The Dolce Vita," "Exposure", "Here Comes The Flood," "Red Rain," and "That Voice Again," but the story never developed into a stage production or movie as Gabriel intended.
  • About Mozo's fantasy world he creates with his short wave radio. He can be anyone he wants on the air, but lives in a dumpster and is ignored in real life. Gabriel was fascinated by short wave radio and how it gets stronger as night approaches.
  • The name Mozo is a distortion of Moses. Other characters in the story are also plays on biblical names.

    Home Sweet Home Lyrics

Met this girl called Josephine and took her up on my machine
We had a little fun and now we got a little one
Had to get married, being chased out of town
Found ourselves a place to live, we put all our money down

Call it Home Sweet Home, home sweet home
Eleven floors up in a tower block
Happy just to have a home
I've gone and changed the lock on our home

Nothing really worked out right, things got broke,
    They stayed that way
None of our friends came around at night and little Sam got
    No place to play
"We've got to get out of here, Bill" she said "I've been telling
    You all the while"
When I came home from work that night she'd jumped out the
    Window with our child

From our Home Sweet Home, home sweet home
Just a place to take a rest, just a place to make our nest
    We call it our home

When the insurance money came through seemed dirty didn't know what to do
Took the cash went down the casino, down on the wheel on the double
And I won, oh yes I won, like I never won before
Bought myself a country house with an antique carved oak door

It was Home Sweet Home, home sweet home
Just a place to lay our head think of all those things we said
About in our Home Sweet Home.

    Home Sweet Home Song Chart
  • The lyrics are a bleak story about a man who's wife jumps out a window with their child. He then uses the insurance money to go to a casino, wins big, and buys a nicer house than their first home.
  • Gabriel wanted to explore the motives of suicide: "What frightens you is that you can't understand what drives people to do it."

    D.I.Y. Lyrics

Don't tell me what I will do, 'cause I won't
Don't tell me to believe in you, 'cause I don't
Be on your guard, better hostile and don't risk affection
Like flesh to the bone in the no-go zone
You're still waiting for the resurrection
Come up to me with your "What did you say?"
And I'll tell you straight in the eye

    D.I.Y. D.I.Y. D.I.Y. D.I.Y. D.I.Y. D.I.Y. D.I.Y. D.I.Y.
    Do it yourself

Everyone want to be what he not, what he not
Nobody happy with what he got, what he got
You function like a dummy with a new ventriloquist
    Do you say nothing yourself?
Hanging like a thriller on the final twist
You know you're getting stuck on the shelf
Come up to me with your "What did you say?"
And I'll tell you straight in the eye

    D.I.Y. D.I.Y. D.I.Y. D.I.Y.

When things get so big, I don't trust them at all
You want some control, you've got to keep it small

    D.I.Y. D.I.Y. D.I.Y. D.I.Y.

    D.I.Y. Song Chart
  • The title stands for "Do It Yourself." The song is about taking responsibility and control of your life.
  • Gabriel used an acoustic arrangement to distinguish this from his work with Genesis.
  • This was released as a single, but despite heavy promotion it was a commercial failure. When this did not sell as a single, Charisma Records, Gabriel's label in England, re-released it in September 1978 with both "Mother Of Violence" and "Me And My Teddy Bear" on the B-side. The original, released that May, was backed with "Perspective."
  • The mostly acoustic sound was chosen in hopes of mimicking the chart success of "Solsbury Hill." Bootlegs contain heavier electric versions of this.
