Gabriel: "About judgmental attitudes being a barrier between people."

The "voice" represents judgment.

Original title was "First Stone." Gabriel changed it so it would be more personal and less biblical.

Gabriel wrote 3 sets of lyrics before guitarist David Rhodes helped him write the ones he would use.

The last song about Mozo, a mercurial stranger Gabriel created who would come and go, changing people's lives. He appeared in "On The Air," "Exposure", "Here Comes The Flood," "Red Rain," and "Down The Dolce Vita," but the Mozo story as a stage production or movie never developed.

Milgram's 37 (we do what we're told) Song Chart

This is about the social experiments of Stanley Milgram, a Yale professor who had subjects administer electric shocks to a person if they answered a question wrong. The person being shocked was an actor who writhed in pain as the shocks got larger. Milgram wanted to see if the subjects would administer the shocks when the experimenter told them to, even though they were causing apparent pain in the person. Almost all subjects administered the highest level of shock despite the actor pounding the wall in apparent agony.

"37" came from the number of subjects who administered the maximum shock in one of the experiments.

Gabriel summarized the results of these experiments with the phrase "We do what we're told." The subjects did not want to administer the shocks, but did so because the experimenter told them to.

Gabriel sung versions of this in concerts long before it was released. They can be found on some bootlegs.

When he performed this in concert, Gabriel got the crowd chanting "We do what we're told." Since the song was not yet released and the crowd did not know its meaning, they were ironically aping the results of the experiment by doing just as Gabriel told them.

Gabriel asked Milgram for permission to use video of his experiments for stage displays and music videos, but Milgram refused, not wanting his work used for entertainment.

In Your Eyes Song Chart

According to Gabriel, the lyrics could refer to either the love between a man and woman or the relationship between a person and God.

African musician Youssou N'Dour sang backup. In 1991 Gabriel performed this in N'Dour's native country of Senegal before a crowd of 70,000.

This was featured in the 1989 movie Say Anything in a scene where John Cusack plays this from a Boom Box he holds over his head to win the heart of Ione Skye. Cameron Crowe, who directed the film, was going to use Billy Idol's "Got To Be A Lover," but it didn't work with the scene. Crowe got the idea to use this when he played a tape from his wedding which had the song on it. Because it was a deeply personal song, Gabriel did not want to let him use it, but when Crowe called and sent him a tape of the movie, Gabriel loved it and gave his approval.

The producers of Say Anything (see a still) were charged about $200,000 to use the song, but it was worth the price as it became one of the most famous scenes in movie history. The scene became a cultural touchstone, which was a little strange for Gabriel. He told Rolling Stone in 2012: "I've talked to John Cusack about that. We're sort of trapped together in a minuscule moment of contemporary culture."

A special 7:14 mix of this song was released to radio stations by Geffen Records. It features extended singing by Youssou N'Dour. This promotional copy also included a 6:15 version of the song, and an 8:36 of Gabriel's "Biko." (thanks, Rob - Hutchinson, KS)

This is one of the few slow songs that gets consistent airplay on rock radio. It was not real popular when it came out, but continues to get constant airplay on a variety of formats, as listeners never seem to tire of it.

The band SR-71 also does a cover of this song. They performed it live at the 2004 Gravity Games. (thanks, Brad - Hickory, NC)

In 1994, Gabriel did a version of "In Your Eyes" live, which appears on disc 2 of the double CD set of Secret World Live, and lasts 11:34. On this version, he improvises a lot in the song with the backup singers. (thanks, Glenda - Austin, TX)

The singer/guitarist Jeffrey Gaines recorded a popular version of this song that got a lot of airplay on Adult Contemporary radio and appears on his 2001 album Always Be. Gaines writes most of his own material, but his cover of "In Your Eyes" has become his best-known work. When we asked him about performing a song written by someone else, he replied: "The conviction I have within that material is my joy of singing."

Gabriel: "A satirical story about a basic human urge... success."

This tells the story of a man from a small town who grows to be larger than life. The ending is heavily processed as Gabriel's voice gets deeper and deeper, creating a sense of size until it ends cold.

Stewart Copeland, who was with The Police at the time, played drums.

The video featured outstanding special effects and played often on MTV. Gabriel raised the bar earlier that year with his video for "Sledgehammer."
