Martina McBride and Kelly Clarkson combined in their first-ever studio duet together, to cover a 1966 Etta James pair-up with Sugar Pie DeSanto. McBride told Billboard magazine about this hookup with the American Idol alumna. "I wanted to do a song that was a little bit unexpected for us," she said. "I think people would expect the two of us to get together and do this big ballad, but I found this song, and thought it was so much fun. It fits her personality, and it has a lot of fun energy and is very vivacious. So, we recorded it together, and I think it turned out great."

Clarkson and McBride previously sang live together in 2006 when they honored Reba McEntire on CMT Giants, performing "Does He Love You."

This is probably the least known of the covers that McBride recorded for her Everlasting album. "I wasn't super familiar with it, to be honest," she told Billboard magazine. "I discovered it along the way. That's one of the great things about this record – I discovered a lot of music while listening to thousands of songs. That was a really great process for me too."

Everlasting was released on McBride's own Vinyl Recordings label through Kobalt Label Services. It spent its first week at #1 on the Country chart, a history making feat for Martina McBride as she became the first woman ever to debut at #1 with an independently released and distributed album.

God's Will Song Chart

Nashville songwriter Barry Dean penned this song with Tom Douglas about his daughter, who was born with special needs, and the challenges involved in dealing with her disability. He told Billboard magazine: "It's actually torn out of my journal, and Tom Douglas helped to shape all of that."

Dean had only just signed his first writers' deal when the song was cut by Martina McBride and its success helped him rethink how he should approach his writing. "This was one of the first songs that cemented for me the idea that I was going to have to be a hard writer," he said. "If it was funny, I was going to do what I thought was funny, and if it was serious, I would be serious. I would write more from the heart than the head."

Wild Angels Song Chart

This Matraca Berg, Gary Harrison and Harry Stinson penned cut was released on November 20, 1995 as the second single from McBride's album of the same name. The song topped the country chart, giving McBride her first ever #1.

The song is about a female deciding there must be "wild angels" watching over her and her man, which are keeping their love alive. Matraca Berg told The Boot the story of how the three songwriters crafted the hit. "I started it with Harry. I don't know what we were smoking that day, but it was a very lofty, kind of poetic, lyric. I heard it [recently] and thought, 'What was I thinking?'"

"We demoed it, and every time Pat [Higdon, my publisher] would play it for somebody, they would say, 'What does this mean'" I knew that the lyric was off, but they loved the music, they loved the title."

Matraca Berg and Harry Stinson brought in Gary Harrison for the rewrite. "It was just so simple," said Berg. "[He said], "You say, 'Wild angels, wild angels' — what's this other thing, 'Blue horses'?" And after we got that figured out, Martina snatched it up."

"Gary gave me an epiphany with that song," she added: "Get them a good, kick-ass chorus, and you can write whatever you want to in the verses."

That's McBride's daughter, Delaney, who was born in December 1994, that can be heard laughing in the song's intro.

Thom Oliphant directed the music video, which finds McBride singing on top of the Clock Tower Building in Brooklyn, New York, while an angel touches the lives of people below. The concept and black-and-white visuals were inspired by the 1987 Wim Wenders film Wings of Desire, about an angel who falls in love with a human woman.

The shoot was a precarious one, as Oliphant explained to Songfacts : "Up there, it's pretty dangerous. There's nothing to keep you from stepping off the side of the building. For every shot of somebody, from Martina sitting on the side to the extras, there's three guys with safety harnesses crouched behind the ledge making sure that those people are attached to a bungee cord."

He would return to the location the following year to shoot Amy Grant's "Takes a Little Time" video.
