Shake

The first single from MercyMe's Welcome To the New album finds MercyMe frontman Bart Millard encouraging Christians to rejoice in their salvation and new life in Christ. He said: "This is about enjoying the fact that we're changed. It's about having the joy and living life that way – Christians are supposed to have joy."

Millard explained the song's meaning in a video interview: "I know its a little bit of a departure from what we normally do, but we're just having a good time," he said. "The idea was, that we understand who we are in Christ, we understand our identity, and it would be hard to sit still. So we thought that was a great song to kick off the whole record."

This celebration of the victories that Christians are promised in Christ was inspired by the troubles of Bart Millard 's middle son Charlie. The MercyMe frontman explained to NewReleaseTuesday : "One day I was trying to tell my son, because he has a stuttering problem, we were talking, and I said, 'Buddy, people may make fun of you, but you have something inside of you that is telling you that you're something different, that you're stronger than that and that you're beautiful.'"

"We were at church one day and some kids made of him and he was kind of down," Millard continued. "I told him, 'You know what I've told you. That's not them. The enemy may be using them, but these kids are good kids. They're not coming after you, it's just the enemy is taking shots at you. He's taking shots at you because you're something special and he's afraid of something you may do.'"

"I've always told him to set his mind on things above, and he started singing this song, 'You are holy, righteous and redeemed,'" Millard added. "I just started bawling. From time to time I can hear him singing this song in the house and I've thought that's the reason to make a record."

Dear Younger Me

Bart Millard's dad was an abusive father until he found out that he had cancer, when the MercyMe vocalist was at high school. After the diagnosis he committed himself to Christ and one of a number of things he let go of were his abusive ways. Bart told Fox News: "He kind of fell in love with Christ and he went from the monster to the guy I wanted to be like when I grew up."

This acoustic prayer for Bart's younger self is based on when he was abused as a kid. The song is directed at those who are struggling through life.
