Side Of A Bullet

This song is about the murder of former Pantera and Damageplan guitarist "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott. Abbott was murdered during a Damageplan show by a man named Nathan Gale on December 8, 2004. Gale was killed by police. Disturbed lead singer David Draiman called Dimebag's murder "The 9-11 of music."

The line, "His brother watched you do it" is referring to former Pantera and Damageplan drummer and Dimebag's older brother Vincent "Vinnie Paul" Abbott. Vinnie Paul witnessed his brother's murder, as he was on stage playing drums with Damageplan. Vinnie Paul's drum technician was also murdered.

The solo in the song is actually Dimebag playing. Nickelback called Vinnie Paul and told him they were doing a song for Dimebag. Vinnie sent them some uncut guitar from Pantera's Far Beyond Driven era that Dimebag had been working on, and Nickelback pieced it together to create a new Dimebag solo.

At first Nickelback wanted to have Vinnie Paul playing on the track, but he refused by stating that Nickelback's drummer Daniel Adair performed as well as he could.

The lyric, "Uncle Sam taught him to shoot maybe a little to well," refers to Nathan Gale's training in the US marine corp.

Kroeger told musicomh.com that the riffs were actually "bits and pieces that didn't get used" on a recording Chad did of Elton John's "Saturday Night's Alright (For Fighting)" with Kid Rock and Dimebag. "And as it should happen, I had this guitar riff and it was very, very aggressive. We started to piece together a solo and we simply didn't have enough material."

Kroeger guessed that Pantera may have leftover material they could use. "I called Vinny, Darrell's brother, the drummer from Pantera, and he sent us tons of material. We went over all these great signature Dimebag Darrell guitar solos and pieced together this guitar solo that we're very, very proud of."
The Nickelback frontman then played Vinny Paul the song. He loved it but told Kroeger, without realizing that it actually a song for Darrell, "You know what I really want you to do, Chad? I want you to write a song for my brother."

This song is about teenage pregnancy. The opening lyrics: " Babies born on a bathroom floor, mother prays it would never cry. What's wrong - you got your prom dress on when they ask you say it isn't mine," shows that it is singing through the eyes of the parents finding out about it.

Nickelback took some heat for the intro to this song, which sounds very similar to the Metallica riff from "The Unnamed Feeling," which was released a few months earlier.

How You Remind Me

In an interview with MTV, Nickelback's lead singer Chad Kroeger said that he wrote the song about his old girlfriend Jodi, who he had a rather dysfunctional relationship with. He kept the lyrics very ambiguous, however, which accounts for much of the song's success, as many people could relate to an ex who started pointing out all of your faults at the same time and caused considerable heartbreak: "This time I'm mistaken, for handing you a heart worth breaking." Silver Side Up was Nickelback's third album, and many of the songs were about relationships and personal issues.

Kroeger brought the song to the band a week before recording the album, thinking of it as a possible last-minute addition. The band finished the song in about 10 minutes and knew they had something special. This was a contrast to most of the album's material, which was written even before their previous album, The State (2000).

This was a huge surprise hit for Nickelback's record company, Roadrunner Records, which was expecting Slipknot to provide their commercial success for 2001. Instead, it was Nickelback. The album was released on September 11, 2001. This was the first single and most popular song, resulting in many listeners associating the song with remembrances of the tragedies of that day. A wildly popular song that covered a range of formats, "How You Remind Me" was the most-played song of 2002 on US radio stations. It was also the most-played radio song in the US during the first decade of the 21st century, with over 1.2 million spins. It was followed on this list by Train's "Drops of Jupiter," which was played over 1.1 million times during the '00s.

This was only the second time a song by a Canadian group hit #1 on the US charts. The first time - "American Woman" by The Guess Who.

Sum 41 was known to cover this song from time to time with slight changes to the lyrics. They played it on MTV's New Year's countdown to 2002.

Near the end of this song, the band drops out and Kroeger bellows, "for handing you a heart worth breaking!"

It was the band's drum tech Andrew Mawhinney who came up with the idea for this hook. Kroeger recalled: "He goes, 'you guys should do a big stop right at the last chorus'."

The band gave Mawhinney $5000 for coming up with the suggestion.

Chad Kroeger's fiancée, Avril Lavigne, covered the song in 2012 for One Piece Film Z, the eleventh Japanese anime feature film based on the shŠnen manga series One Piece by Eiichiro Oda. The couple married the following year.

"Once I heard that little production gag with the tail going at the end of it, I started spitting out these lines with the melody," he said. "I literally went, 'Are you waiting on a lightning strike? And are you waiting for the perfect night?' And everyone went, 'Ooooh.' The pens and the pads came out. And if I kept saying, 'Waiting, waiting, waiting,' we knew that it should be motivational song."

"Getting a job is safe. Chasing your dreams is dangerous," Kroeger added. "If this song is the motivational push for just one person to say, 'OK, that's it. This smutty slice of disco-funk represents a change of pace for Nickelback. "Up 'til now we've always just tried to be heavier with the rock songs and more melodic with the melodic songs, and now it's, 'OK, not everything has to be left and right.
