Colossus Lyrics

Your mother hung herself in the National Theater
When she was four months pregnant with your sister
Who would have been thirteen years old today
Does that make you feel any less alone in the world?

Your dad, I'm sure, he tried his best
He thought you'd be better off living with your grandmother
He didn't realize that she had already given up
Baby, your family, they are just losers

I've become such a wolf around you
My thoughts go dark and dull, out of focus
Have no peace in my mind
Because you
You've touched me

The screech owls are going insane outside my house
It is the season for trouble and self destruction
All of my friends, they are falling apart
But not me, I'm in control

Remember the exquisite corpse that we created together
We laughed at the time, it seemed so impenetrable
But reading it now I think I understand
What it is that we are trying to steal from each other

I've become such a wolf around you
My thoughts go dark and dull, out of focus
Have no peace in my mind
Because you
You've touched me

  • This Lousy with Sylvianbriar track was inspired by the American poet Sylvia Plath, who published a 1960 collection with the same title. Of Montreal mainman Kevin Barnes told Rolling Stone: "I had been reading a lot of her poetry when I was making this record, and she sort of haunted the album."
  • As well as referencing Plath's family, the song is also about the relatives of somebody in Barnes' life. It contains the rather mean lyric "Baby, your family, they are just losers." The frontman told Rolling Stone: "It's not really meant to be an insult. It's more of an observation. When you have people who have loser relatives or loser parents, they have to come to terms with that. It doesn't mean that you love them any less. Some people are just that way, and you have to deal with the repercussions of dealing with loser relatives."

    She Ain't Speakin' Now Lyrics

    Like some sepulchral tableau
I sit frozen holding your hand
Though I’m trying to think only
    Positive thoughts I understand

    That place tomorrow
May not be there tomorrow, then
    Your eviscerating, suffering will end
Oh, will you ever be yourself again?

    [Chorus]
Girl with the flu, I hear the death rheum
    She ain’t doin' well
Her eyes they seem cast and fatherless
    Her psyche's cracked or
    Anyhow, She Ain't Speakin' Now

    Nightfall, like some leaden sea
Dilates as I hold vigil by your bed
Watching the pillowcase soaking with sweat around your head

I can't repel this sneaking veil of morbidity
That's disfiguring the serif of your face
    Oh, the organism's been debased

    [Chorus]

    You scream that the books
Are fallin' off of the shelf onto you
    But I can see them
    Your hallucination ravings
I'm writing them all down so
    You can see read them
When your mind no longer aches
    And your febrility breaks

Girl with the flu, I hear the death rheum
    She ain’t doin' well
Her eyes they seem cast and fatherless
    Her psyche's shattered or
    Anyhow, She ain't speakin' now]

  • Of Montreal frontman Kevin Barnes penned this song while other members of his family were seriously ill. "I wrote the song when both my wife and daughter were bedridden with a terrible illness," Barnes told Rolling Stone. "It was during the middle of our recording sessions for Sylvianbriar, so I was pretty paranoid about catching what they had. I would sort of hold my breath whenever I was near them. I wrote the song while fearing the worst. Fortunately, they both recovered."
