Scream (Funk My Life Up) Lyrics

How was I to know you'd just come along?
And funk my life up
Lips like debbie's, sing sex like strawberry songs
Just funk my life up
Never heard her coming, thought it was just another woman
With a shotgun in her hand
Funk my life up

She's the bass, she's the beat, she's the rhythm, she's the band
Just funk my life up
And that girl, so fine
Makes you wanna scream hallelujah

Sly hands, spinning wax lights, oh God
Beats are dripping on me like spider milk
And I never heard the warning when I woke up in the morning
With my sunshine on a drip

She's my rock, she's my but, she's the dealer trip
And that girl, so fine
Makes you wanna scream hallelujah

How could I refuse? I'm not fit to chose
Just funk my life up
Said the only way I win is the way I lose
Just funk my life up
And I never got the script, I unzipped
Got a little bit wet up there in my brain
She's your church, she's your sin, she's a comic, she's a
And that girl, so fine
You wanna scream

She gets me sinning, she's like a trick on me
Hell, I don't even know her name but yet she sticks to me
And in the climax she would scream with me
Yeah, she sticks to me
She gets me funny, she doesn't want none of my money
So I pour it over her like gasoline
Light a match and then I'm back in my teens
Me and super girl smoking my green
Me and super girl smoking my green

Oh, Lord, reload, ice bags, scream
Sweet thing, nose ring, jet pack, sing
That girl so fine, makes you wanna scream hallelujah
Hallelujah
Yeah, that girl, so fine you wanna scream

Scream (Funk My Life Up)
  • The song's joyous Nez-directed music video sees Nutini traipsing around Los Angeles as he encounters an array of '70s-themed dancers, beautiful cheerleaders and other unique Hollywood characters on the way. "What a pleasure it was to make … all of those interesting, beautiful people, giving us an insight into how they do what they do and being kind enough to do it on camera," said Nutini. "[I] loved every second of it. Shine on, you crazy diamonds."
  • Caustic Love was Nutini's third album, and his first with no producer conflict. Nutini clashed with Guy Chambers on his first album, and with Ethan Johns on his second. He told Swide about his positive experience working with producer Dani Castelar on Caustic Love. "He facilitated my ideas, he made them happen beyond my skills," Nutini said. "I kept the record company at bay, I made sure that nobody but me influenced the sessions. He took care of the rest: he found a lot of talented musicians and instruments, he provided a great studio."

    Iron Sky Lyrics

We are proud individuals living on the city
But the flames couldn’t go much higher
We find gods and religions to
    To paint us with salvation
    But no one
    No nobody
    Can give you the power

    To rise over love
    And over hate
    Through this Iron Sky
    That’s fast becoming our minds
    Over fear and into freedom

    Oh, that’s life
    Left dripping down the walls
Of a dream that cannot breathe
    In this harsh reality
Mass confusion spoon fed to the blind
Serves now to define our cold society

From which we’ll rise over love
    Over hate
    From this iron sky
    That’s fast becoming our minds
    Over fear and into freedom

You just got to hold on!
You just got to hold on!

    Oh oh oh oh

(To those who can hear me, I say, do not despair
The misery that is now upon us is but the passing of greed
The bitterness of men who fear the way of human progress
The hate of men will pass, and dictators die
And the power they took from the people will return to the people
And so long as men die, liberty will never perish
Don't give yourselves to these unnatural men
Machine men with machine minds and machine hearts!
You are not machines, you are not cattle, you are men!
You, the people, have the power to make this life free and beautiful
To make this life a wonderful adventure
    Let us use that power!
    Let us all unite!)

    And we’ll rise over love
    And over hate
    Through this iron sky
    That’s fast becoming our minds
    Over fear
    And into freedom
    Into freedom!

From which we’ll rise over love
    And over hate
    Through this iron sky
    That’s fast becoming our minds
    Over fear and into freedom
    Freedom!

Oh, from which we’ll rise over love
    And over hate
    Through this iron sky
    That’s fast becoming our minds
    Over fear and into freedom
    Freedom!

    Freedom!
    Rain on me!
    Rain on me!

    Iron Sky
  • This six-minute song finds Nutini urging politicians to turn modern fears "into freedom." He explained to The Sun: "The more I watch politicians in action, it just makes me angry. I watch certain politicians get asked questions that need answers and may just prance around with a big laugh and smile on my face. Politicians have an arrogance. I just do not understand. I've seen more constructive debate since high school."

"People get disillusioned and voting has little value to some people," he added. "That's sad."
  • The song features a sample from Charlie Chaplin's speech in his Hitler–lampooning 1940s film, The Great Dictator ("You are not machines! You are not cattle!").
  • A live performance of this song at London's Abbey Road studios saw an enthusiastic Adele tweet: "This is one of the best things I've ever seen in my life, hands down."
  • Paolo Nutini (from The Independent): "The world throws up new meanings for that one every day, but it's mainly that man-versus-machine thing. You know: you go into WH Smith these days and they steer you to the electronic checkout. I always think: 'Why so calm?' Don't you realize that thing that doesn't have a family to feed is going to have your job?"
  • A short film was released to accompany the song. Directed by Daniel Wolfe (Plan B), the nine-minute video offers a dystopian vision of the future, where people are suffering but are occasionally able to dance. According to the director he was sent the track by Nutini without any explanation, and the bleak future he created was inspired by Charlie Chaplin's speech that is sampled on the track.
  • This won for Best Track at the 2014 Q Awards.
  • Nutini told Q magazine he had to get permission from Charlie Chaplin's family to use the sample. He said: "To have them come back excited by the prospect only galvanized me more. To have Charlie Chaplin on your side certainly helps!"
  • Best remembered today as a comedian, Charlie Chaplin was also a talented composer. He penned "Smile" for the 1936 movie Modern Times, which became something standard with versions by Tony Bennett, Nat King Cole, Petula Clark, Barbra Streisand and Diana Ross. Thirty years later, another Charlie Chaplin tune, "This Is My Song," was a big hit for Petula Clark.

    Looking For Something Lyrics

    Another day is washed away
    And all alibis are out
And the hand that used to heal me only cursed me now
The echoes of a woman so kind
Rain like waterfalls and ice-cream on my worried mind
I lay there in the puddle of myself
Fishing from a brand new wish from that bucket down the well
And in her colors I find my faith
Cause I remember every word that lady used to say

She said that hearts can't break themselves
Looking For Something, leaving with nothing
    But souls can't save themselves
Learning to fly, sweet mother of mine!
Be a long home without you
It's just a long way home without you
    Yeah, yeah!

That's my mother, like no other
Made me human, made me brother
And it's swelling with blister for my sake and my sisters
The guardian of my karma, keep my feet on terrain firmer
And then release me like a scient to the sky!

She said that hearts can't break themselves
Looking for something, leaving with nothing
    But souls can't save themselves
Learning to fly, sweet mother of mine!
It's just a long way home

Sister, you have some hungry eyes
    And by back you're hypnotized
    Smiling faces in disguise
    By back you're hypnotized
    Keep going against the grain
And soon that's all, soon that's all you'll know
And soon that's all you'll know
    And let's get this straight
Sometimes you'll rise, and there's time you'll fall
After all, you're just blood and bones
And you don't owe no one, oh
No, you don't owe no one
So don't live like one price is right
Cause there is some things in your life that you can't fight!

She said that hearts can't break themselves
Looking for something, wind up with nothing
    But souls can't save themselves
Learning to fly, sweet mother of mine!

She said that hearts can't break themselves
Looking for something, leaving with nothing
    But souls can't save themselves
Learning to fly, learning to fly
She said that souls can't save themselves
Learning to fly, learning to fly
    Oh souls can't save themselves
Learning to fly, learning to fly
Oh momma, how I love you!
Learning to fly, learning to fly
No momma, how I love you
Learning to fly, sweet mother of mine!

We're a long way home without you

    Looking For Something
  • Nutini wrote this song about his mother Linda, who is his biggest fan. The lyrics of the song include words of wisdom that she would say to Nutini when he was growing up. He explained to The Sun: "I'd already written a song about my dad so owed mum a tune. I think she's just happy that I'm back singing because she gets to go to all the gigs and hotels."

    Autumn Lyrics

    Autumn leaves under frozen souls,
Hungry hands turning soft and old.
My hero cried as we stood out there in the cold,
Like these autumn leaves I don't have nothing to hold.

    Handsome smile, wearing handsome shoes,
Too young to say though I swear he knew.
I hear him singing while he sits there in his chair,
While these autumn leaves float around everywhere.

I look at you and I see me, making noise so restlessly,
But now it's quiet and I can hear you saying,
My little fish don't cry, my little fish don't cry.

    Autumn leaves have faded now
That smile I lost well I've found somehow,
Cause you still live on in my father's eyes.

These autumn leaves, oh these autumn leaves,
Oh these autumn leaves are yours tonight.

    Autumn
  • A track from Paolo Nutini's debut album, this song is about Nutini's grandfather who passed away when Paolo was 12 years old.

Nutini's family has owned a fish and chip shop for generations in his hometown Paisley in Scotland. When Nutini was a child and his parents were busy working in the store, they would send him to his grandfather's house, which is where he was first introduced to music. He witnessed his grandfather experience the different stages of grief about the death of his grandmother. Nutini spoke to The Big Issue about watching his grandfather channel those emotions into music. "He'd be sat at the piano with his glasses with the brown tint, head up, eyes closed, and just playing these beautiful arias from Aida and other operas," he said. "Every now and again I can even remember the wee tear trickling down. To me he was just singing and looking up and he was just like, 'I hope you can hear this, darling.'"
  • Nutini wrote this song with his fellow Scotsman Jim Duguid, who collaborated on five songs from the These Streets album.

    Numpty Lyrics

    Hey, la, la, la
Building a house so we can fall at the first brick
    If the cement don't stick
    But I've been told
That it only gets harder from there!

Hmm, now that I'm young I just do what I do
I don't second guess too much.
Shed my ties and I'm not that wise
I'm all grown up as such.
But all the talk about the ring and the baby
    Gets me every time
Am I big enough, strong enough to walk along your line?
    Yeah, baby

Building a house so we can fall at the first brick
    If the cement don't stick
    But I've been told
That it only gets harder from there!

You see, I'm always on the hustle
That I don't know just how good I get it
That it's plenty of men out there with money and muscle
Look at these hips, baby, don't you forget them
Oh, but the curls will go, the money will spend
What we left within the end?
She's more than happy, she's taken her play
I'm saying, 'who's that bitch with my second name? '

Oh, he's building a house so we can fall at the first brick
    If the cement don't stick
    But I've been told
That it only gets harder from there!

    Yeah, baby, truth be told
I'm only trying to keep my head above the water
    Responsibility, turn on monogamy,
    I'm not a father, child
Are you a mother, are you?
    Uh, my pride and joy
Yeah, you, you are my pride and joy!

Oh, building a house so we can fall at the first brick
    If the cement don't stick
    But I've been told
That it only gets harder from there!
    Yeah, baby,
Building a house so we can fall at the first brick
    If the cement don't stick
    But I've been told
That it only gets harder from there!

    Numpty Song Chart
  • This self-critical Caustic Love track finds Nutini grappling with relationship issues. It borrows the melody from Lee Dorsey's 1965 hit "Working in the Coal Mine."
  • The word 'Numpty' is a British slang word meaning a bumbling fool or idiot. Derived from "numps," an obsolete word for a stupid person, it first surfaced on the terraces of Scottish football grounds as a reference to a useless referee or footballer.
