Reflektor Lyrics

Trapped in a prism, in a prism of light
Alone in the darkness, darkness of white
We fell in love, alone on a stage
In the reflective age

Entre la nuit, la nuit et l’aurore
Entre les royaumes, des vivants et des morts
If this is heaven
I don't know what it’s for
If I can’t find you there
I don't care

I thought, I found a way to enter
It’s just a Reflektor (It's just a reflektor)
I thought, I found the connector
It’s just a reflektor (It's just a reflektor)

Now, the signals we send, are deflected again
We're still connected, but are we even friends?
We fell in love when I was nineteen
And I was staring at a screen

Entre la nuit, la nuit et l’aurore
Entre les voyants, les vivants et les morts
If this is heaven
I need something more
Just a place to be alone
'Cause you're my home

I thought, I found a way to enter
It’s just a reflektor (It's just a reflektor)
I thought, I found the connector
It’s just a reflektor (It's just a reflektor) Just a reflektor

It’s just a reflektor (It's just a reflektor)

It’s just a reflektor (It's just a reflektor)

It’s just a reflektor (It's just a reflektor)

reflektor (Just a reflektor)
(Just a reflektor) just a reflektor
(Just a reflektor) just a reflektor (reflektor)
(Just a reflektor)
(Just a reflektor)
(Just a reflektor, just a reflektor)
(Just a reflektor, just a reflektor)

Just a reflection, of a reflection
Of a reflection, of a reflection, of a reflection
Will I see you on the other side? (Just a reflektor)
We all got things to hide (Just a reflektor)
It’s just a reflection of a reflection
Of a reflection, of a reflection, of a reflection
Will I see you on the other side? (Just a reflektor)
We all got things to hide (Just a reflektor)

Alright, let's go back
Our song escapes, on little silver discs
Our love is plastic, we'll break it to bits
I want to break free, but will they break me?
Down, down, down, don't mess around

I thought, I found a way to enter
It’s just a reflektor (It's just a reflektor)
I thought, I found the connector
It’s just a reflektor (It's just a reflektor)

It’s just a reflektor

It’s just a reflektor (It's just a reflektor)

It’s just a reflektor (It's just a reflektor)
It’s just a reflektor (It's just a reflektor)

Thought you would bring me to the resurrector
Turns out it was just a reflektor (It’s just a reflektor)
Thought you would bring to me the resurrector
Turns out it was just a reflektor (It’s just a reflektor)
Thought you would bring to me the resurrector
Turns out you were just a reflektor
It’s just a reflektor (It's just a reflektor)
(It's just a reflektor) Just a reflektor

Just a reflektor
Just a reflektor
Just a reflektor
Will I see you on the other side?
It’s just a reflektor
Will I see you on the other side? (reflektor)
We all got things to hide (reflektor)
Just a reflektor
Will I see you on the other side?

Reflektor
  • The title track and lead single of Arcade Fire's fourth album finds frontman Win Butler singing about feeling lost and disconnected from modern life and yearning for simpler times. The song was released on September 9, 2013.
  • The song was produced by James Murphy, who is best known for his work with LCD Soundsystem. It features backing vocals by David Bowie, who has been a fan of Arcade Fire for many years. Win Butler once said of their famous supporter, "I remember when we first met David Bowie and he said, 'You'll definitely be big in the UK.' He was always enthusiastic about the band."
  • The black and white video was directed by Anton Corbijn who has famously shot visuals and photos for U2, The Killers and Depeche Mode. It features the band wearing oversized papier-mâché heads sat in the back of a truck, which is being driven by Win Butler and his wife/ co-vocalist Régine Chassagne.
  • A second interactive video directed by regular collaborator Vincent Morisset was also released. It was filmed on location in Haiti, the childhood home of Regine Chassagne.
  • Chassagne sings a couple of lines in her native French, which translates as:

"Between the night, night and dawn.
Between the kingdom of the living and the dead."
  • The album cover is an image of Auguste Rodin's sculpture of Orpheus and Eurydice.
  • Multi-instrumentalist Richard Reed Parry told NME how Bowie ended up singing backing vocals. "It was just after The Next Day had come out," he explained. "He basically just came by the studio in New York while we were mixing, just to have a listen to the stuff we were doing. He offered to lend us his services because he really liked the song. In fact, he basically threatened us - he was like, 'If you don't hurry up and mix this song, I might just steal it from you!' So we thought, well why don't we go one better, why don't you sing on our version? Thankfully he obliged, and we were really happy about that."
  • Multi-instrumentalist Will Butler told Jam! Music that his brother and sister-in-law wrote the song with a third vocalist in mind. "When Win and Regine were writing the song ... he had kind of pictured this third point of view cause Reflektor is this back and forth between two characters," he explained. "And I forget how it happened (but) we were in town mixing Reflektor in New York and (Bowie) was going to come by. And I was like, 'Well, David Bowie is a really good outside perspective,' and like apropos, not totally random. Like kind of in the spirit of some of the (late '70s-early '80s dance flavoured) music that we were making that it felt aesthetically appropriate also."
  • Though David Bowie doesn't appear in the song's music clip, his likeness does. "There is a David Bowie mask, in the very last second of the film, of the video," Will Butler explained, "that creepy mask that Win is wearing is in fact a David Bowie mask."
  • Speaking with The Sun, Win Butler recalled the time the band spent recording with Bowie: "What was cool was that we were mixing at Electric Lady studios in New York," he said. "The line he does on 'Reflektor' echoes the line he does on 'Fame,' the song he recorded in the very same studio with John Lennon. So he showed up and said, 'The last time I was here I was recording with John Lennon.' And we looked at each other to say, 'And here you are recording with Arcade Fire."
  • The song finds Win Butler singing lines like, "We fell in love when I was 19, now we're staring at a screen." He told Rolling Stone: "It's not like I'm romanticizing it. I think that life is incredibly difficult and it's more amazing to see people that don't have access to food or clean water throw a party. It's not like I'm trying to sing about their experiences. I was more learning from what I saw and applying it to my own life, lyrically. I'm not trying to tell other people's stories. We're just trying to allow an experience to change you."

    (Here comes the night time)
    (Here comes the night time)
    Here comes the night time
    Here comes the night time
    Here comes the night time

    I hurt myself again
    Alone with all my friends

    Here comes the night time
    Here comes the night time
    Here comes the night time

    You hurt yourself again
    Alone with all your friends

Here comes the night time, coming on slow (Here comes the night time)
Here comes the night time, I know that you know (Here comes the night time)

    Here Comes the Night Time
  • This sonically schizophrenic song features propulsive percussion and festive horns gleaned from Haiti. Arcade Fire multi instrumentalist and co-vocalist Régine Chassagne has roots in the Caribbean country as her Haitian parents emigrated to Canada during the tyrannical dictatorship of Papa Doc. The band has traveled there on several occasions in recent years, including a trip to Haiti's Carnival in Jacmel.
  • Three percussionists from the Haitian band RAM lent a hand to this floor-filler. Chassagne, and Will and Win Butler spent two weeks in New Orleans with the drummers working specifically on rhythm. "We just recorded beats," Chassagne told The Guardian. "We were interested in doing hybrid beats that could translate stuff that I know from my family background in Haiti. I was always interested to try to find rhythms that mean something, to communicate emotion through rhythm and music. Because rhythm is almost like a vocabulary."
  • The song is reprised at the beginning of the record's Side B with an alternative version titled "Here Comes the Night Time II."
  • This is one of several songs on Reflektor inspired by the band's time spent in Haiti. Frontman Win Butler told The Sun: "We spent a lot of time in Haiti, an island a lot of people don't get to see. So we wanted to bring Haiti to the people. And the Haitians know how to party. We have a lot to learn, that's for sure."
  • The song starts with Butler singing:

    "When the sun goes down
When the sun goes down, you head inside
    Cause the lights don't work."

He explained in an interview with Macleans magazine: "There's a crazy energy in Port-au-Prince when the sun goes down, because there is no electricity in a lot of the city. A lot of parts of the city are pretty dangerous, and people are rushing around trying to get home."
  • The song finds Win Butler criticizing Christian missionaries, whom he believes shouldn't be attempting to convert Haitians from their own beliefs. The Arcade Fire frontman explained to Rolling Stone that he was thinking about, "Just the absurdity that you can go to a place like Haiti and teach people something about God. Like, the opposite really seems to be true, in my experience. I've never been to a place with more belief and more knowledge of God."
  • Win Butler described the song to Rolling Stone as "kind of a hybrid of Haitian Rara and Jamaican influence." He added: "We spent some time in Jamaica, but it sounds like a Cure song at the end of the day, kind of a mashup. I mean, it's not like our band trying to play Haitian music. I just felt like we were opened up to a new influence. Bob Marley probably felt the same way the first time he heard Curtis Mayfield."

    Awful Sound (Oh Eurydice) Lyrics

    You and I were born
    In a little town
    Before the awful sound
    Started coming down

    Oh no oh

    You came home from school
    Knew you had to run
    Please stop running now
Just let me be the one

    For you

But I know you can see
    Things that we can't see
But when I say I love you
    Your silence covers me
Oh, Eurydice, it's an awful sound

    I was so disappointed
    You didn't want me
Oh, how could it be, Eurydice
    I was standing beside you
    By a frozen sea
    Will you ever get free?
    Just take all your pain
    Just put it on me
    So that you can breathe
    When you fly away
    Will you hit the ground?
    It's an awful sound

    I know there's a way
    We can make 'em pay
Think it over and say (I'm never going back again)
    I know there's a way
    We can leave today
Think it over and say (I'm never going back again)

When you were born in the little town
    Before the awful sound
    Started coming down
    There's so much inside you
That you won't let me see
    You fly away from me
    But it's an awful sound
    When you hit the ground
    It's an awful sound
    When you hit the ground

    I know there's a way
    We can make 'em pay
    Think it over and say
    (I'm never going back again)
    But I know there's a way
    We can leave today
    Think it over

We know there's a price to pay
For love in the reflective age
I met you up upon a stage
Our love in a reflective age

Oh no, now you're gone (No)

    Awful Sound (Oh Eurydice)
  • This song references Eurydice, who in Ancient Greek legend was the wife of the gifted musician Orpheus. The lyrics about despair, isolation and death were inspired by the story of the mythological lover's attempt to retrieve Eurydice from the underworld after she died.
  • Frontman Win Butler told The Sun that a particular inspiration was Marcel Camus' 1959 Brazilian movie about the star crossed lovers, Black Orpheus. "Regine (Chassagne, wife and bandmate) and I watched the film Black Orpheus, which is super relevant because it's based in Brazil during carnival and is the oldest pre Romeo and Juliet love story there is."

"So it got to me," he added. "I obsess about ideas. I don't know any other way to write. I try to find five different ways to look at an idea."
  • Reflektor's cover art is an image of Auguste Rodin's sculpture of Orpheus and Eurydice. This is one of several songs on the album that were inspired by Greek mythology and the structure of tragedy.

I know you're living in my mind
It's not the same as being alive
I know you're living in my mind
It's not the same as being alive

    Supersymmetry
    Supersymmetry

Then I guess we'll have to fight

    Reading books, better than memories

    Supersymmetry
    Supersymmetry

    Supersymmetry
  • This epic synth-driven meditation on mortality is a duet between vocalist Win Butler and his wife, Régine Chassagne. It reaches its peak with the help of strings from old collaborators Owen Pallet and former bandmate Sarah Neufeld. Bassist Tim Kingsbury told The Sun that the band had let the tune go by the wayside, but producer James Murphy persuaded them to complete it. "It was this super loose, open jam, a drifting electronic song, but he said we had to keep it on the record," he said.
  • This was originally written for the Spike Jonze film Her, but was reworked for Reflektor. A variation of the song can be heard weaving in and out of the track, "Morning Talk/Supersymmetry," on the Her score.

    Flashbulb Eyes
  • This meditation on the dangers of a high public profile features Calypso-type Ska guitar, Dubby downbeats and steel drums. It was penned during a trip that Arcade Fire took to Jamaica with producer Markus Dravs where the band wrote and recorded in an abandoned castle, named Trident. Win Butler recalled to Rolling Stone: "The castle was built in 1979, or something, by this eccentric Jamaican dude who just wanted to hang out with royalty. And it kind of worked. After about five years he couldn't afford to pay the bill, so it had been sitting empty for many years. I met a dude who was planning on turning it into a hotel, so we just rented it off him for cheap and there was nothing in there. We brought in some beds and a piano and some gear."
  • This song has been widely interpreted as a Rock Star complaining about being photographed. "I don't feel bad if Régine and I are in a restaurant and someone asks for a photo and I say 'no,'" Win Butler told Mojo magazine. "I don't feel a celebrity responsibility to not be a human. I talk to them: 'Nice to meet you.'. Sometimes I come across as a little intense to people, and it's just trying to preserve a genuine relationship, for myself."

    We have fabulous music from
    The fantastic
    Arcade Fire!

    Sometimes it moves so fast
    Sometimes it moves so fast
    If you stop to ask
    It's already passed
So how can you move so slow?
How can you move so slow?
You miss it if you don't
    You miss it if you

    Don't already know
    Already know
    Already know
    Already know
    Already know

    When your love is right
    When your love is right
    You can't sleep at night
    You've been sleeping just fine
But when your love is bad
    When your love is bad
Don't know why you're so sad
    But it's time to go

    You Already Know
    Already know
    You already know
    You already know
    You already know
    You already know
    You already know
    Already know

    Sometimes it moves so fast
    Sometimes it moves so fast
    If you stop to ask
    It's already passed
So how can you move so slow?
How can you move it so slow?
    You missed it, you know
    You missed it

    You already know

Please stop wondering why you feel so bad

    You Already Know
  • This Post-Punk song starts with a clip from Arcade Fire's 2007 performance on Jonathan Ross's BBC talk show when Win Butler smashed a camera live on television with an ukulele. "We have fantastic music from the fantastic Awcade Fiyah," introduced the famously 'r'-challenged chat show presenter.
  • This is one of several tracks on Reflektor where there's a dance-music influence. Win Butler told BBC Radio 1's Zane Lowe that it was the album's co-producer, LCD Soundsystem mainman James Murphy, that provided the band with a guiding path for their more rhythmic direction. "If you can get James tapping his foot," Butler said, "you know you're on the right track."
  • Arcade Fire had the first ideas for Reflektor when playing a gig in rural Haiti, which led the group to making a more dancier album, Win Butler explained to Rolling Stone: "You're playing for people who have never heard the Beatles before. In rural Haiti, they've never heard 'I Want To Hold Your Hand.' They've never heard Elvis. So if you don't have any of this kind of context of rock & roll, if you just play a song, what makes it connect? There's the rhythmic elements of the songs and the emotion in the vocal — you're able to really connect with people that you don't share language or a common culture with."

"You know, 'Headlights Look Like Diamonds' is on our first EP and that's pretty much like a New Order dance song, and New Order is probably one of our biggest influences from the beginning," Butler added. "That's one of the things we always connected to with James Murphy. LCD to me is like New Order and the B-52's and we deeply share a lot of those influences, and we did completely different things with it. Régine (Chassagne, bandmate and wife) is kind of the person who dances. At any given minute, if you can get Régine to dance, you're kind of on the right track, so I think we just wanted to make a record that Régine could dance to."
  • Jonathan Ross re-enacted his epilogue on stage with the band during their performances at Coachella and Later Live... with Jools Holland.
  • The music video was filmed and directed by Win Butler. As the band perform the song in a sun-lit bedroom, the camera pans to various pink-eyed framed portraits who come alive and lip-sync to the track.
