Rhythm Of The Heat Song Chart

Gabriel wrote this song about psychologist Carl Jung's visit to Africa. He joined a group of drummers and dancers and became overwhelmed with fear. Gabriel learned about it from Jung's book Symbols And The Interpretation Of Dreams.

Jung was studying the Collective Unconscious, and was afraid he would go mad as the drummers and dancers let the music control them. Gabriel tries to capture this feeling with the tribal drumbeats.

Gabriel incorporated a lot of World Music into his solo work, and this song is a great example. He explained to the NME in 1982: "The end of 'Rhythm Of The Heat' uses the Ghanaian war dance as an echo – because a big bass thud underneath it puts it in a different dimension. An area that I can identify with more strongly than something that sounds purely 'African'."

The original titled was "Jung In Africa."

Gabriel wrote this in an attempt to connect with the audience and engage them in the music. He used to dive into the audience when he performed this live - it was one of the first uses of the stage dive.

Gabriel: "About trust, about healing and sacrifice."

Although the title and lyrics conjure up religious imagery, it is not meant to be a reference to Jesus Christ.

Gabriel used a Fairlight sampling device to capture the sound of dragging concrete, which he worked into the mix. He is always looking for new sounds and recording techniques.

This is about the absurdities of traditional weddings. The territorial battles, rings, and vows seem ridiculous from an outsiders point of view.

The lyrics were inspired by the early poetry of Dylan Thomas.

Gabriel's marriage to his first wife Jill hit a crisis when she had an affair with David Lord, the co producer of Security, and in this song he foreshadowed the marital tension. He told Mojo April 2010: "We think we're islands, but we're all connected in a landmass. What you see above the water is two people getting married. But beneath the water are the tentacles of two larger, dominant organisms which are the families making connection through those two particular tentacles. But we never observe and recognise that."
