The Used bassist Jeph Howard tells us that "A Box Full of Sharp Objects" is probably his favorite song by the band. Howard explains: "It's still a pretty strong song. I think it's just the mental area we were in during that first record. It's like it was experimental."

Along with "Buried Myself Alive," this is one of the early songs The Used continued to play in their live shows 10 years later. The decision on what songs to include in the shows is difficult for the band. Bassist Jeph Howard says: "It's kind of hard when you're touring and you only play a certain amount of time. You only get like an hour and a half and sometimes like a half hour. Trying to throw in five and a half records into that gets a little difficult."

Hard To Say

This song has a tragic side to it. Lead singer Bert McCracken wrote it about his girlfriend, who at the time and she was pregnant with his child. After the song was recorded, she died of a drug overdose, killing their unborn child as well. Before the tragedy, The Used were skeptical about putting it on the album, but when they found out what happened they had to put it on.

Poetic Tragedy

This song tells the story of a struggling musician who feels that there is no place for him in the world. Feeling he is a lost cause, he takes his own life (as stated in the final verse of the song). Many artists - painters, writers and often musicians - are not appreciated during their lifetimes, but their work becomes popular after they die. When we spoke with Jeph Howard from The Used, he said, "I think that song was originally was about another musician or songwriter. It was a mix between a thought of a person spending his whole life writing art and then dying before he really felt fulfilled." (here's our full Jeph Howard interview .)

Choke Me

Lead singer Bert McCracken wrote this about his addictions to cocaine and methamphetamines. Growing up in Utah, McCracken was raised in the Mormon community, but left home and turned to drugs. The Used bassist Jeph Howard said in our 2012 interview that McCracken "has had a pretty hard life, which he made for himself, in a way." He adds that McCracken is still struggling with the addictions he sings about in "Choke Me," and believes that "once you're an addict, you're an addict for the rest of your life" and that "you have to keep yourself in check in constant times and in constant areas." This is a bonus track found in their first album after the last track. Sit and wait or fast foward and you'll hear someone singing "Happy Birthday" to Bert. After that it goes right into this.

"It's a song about me and [frontman] Bert McCracken's friendship," guitarist Quinn Allman explained. "When the band started to really pick up and people started to really get interested, we were almost not being friends anymore because we were focusing so much time on the band and not on each other." The colors in the title could have some meaning. The color blue belongs to the Planet Venus, the giver of Love, devotion and harmony. The musical note of blue is G, a favorite key for the composer of romantic music. The color yellow belongs to the planet Mercury, and is said to stimulate the nerves of the brain and body.
