Bulls On Parade Song Chart

This song deals with the US military and their aggressive tactics. It mentions how the arms industry encourages war to get military contracts with lines like, "Weapons, not food, not homes, not shoes, not need, just feed the war cannibal-animal," and "What we don't know keeps the contracts alive and moving."

The sound of vinyl turntable scratching that you hear is not, in fact, a turntable, but was a sound effect reproduced by Tom Morello. Morello rubs his fingers along the guitar strings while toggling between two pickups and using a wah-pedal.

The video was nominated "Best Hard Rock Video" at the 1996 MTV Video Music Awards. It was directed by Peter Christopherson, himself a member of Hipgnosis, Throbbing Gristle, and Psychic TV, among other career milestones. He also directed videos for Yes' "Owner Of A Lonely Heart," Pink Floyd's "Us And Them," and Bad Company's "Shake It Up," to name just a few notable works.

Maybe I'm Amazed Song Chart

Paul McCartney wrote this song about his wife Linda, who died of breast cancer in 1998. McCartney never wavered in his love for Linda, and even made her part of his band so she could tour with him.

"Maybe I'm Amazed" was written in 1969 just after The Beatles broke up. McCartney credits Linda with helping him get through this difficult time.

The studio version of this song was never released as a single (no tracks on the album were), but it is one of the most enduring songs on McCartney's first solo album. A concert version was released as a single in 1977 to promote the Wings Over America live album. Credited to Paul McCartney & Wings, it went to #10 in the US in April 1977.

McCartney, an animal rights activist, appeared on The Simpsons episode 3F03, "Lisa The Vegetarian." McCartney helps Lisa become a vegetarian and tells her that if you play this song backwards, you hear a recipe for lentil soup. Over the closing credits of that episode, if you listen carefully, you can hear the backwards message. As an extra feature on The Simpsons DVD, you can hear McCartney read the recipe and say, "There you have it Simpsons lovers, oh and by the way, I'm alive."

The lentil soup recipe Paul speaks backwards is:
- one medium onion, chopped
- two tablespoons of vegetable oil
- one clove of garlic, crushed
- one cup of carrots, chopped
- two sticks of celery, chopped
- half a cup of lentils
- one bay leaf
- one tablespoon of freshly chopped parsley
- salt and freshly ground pepper to taste
- two and a quarter cups of vegetable stock or water

With the exception of John Lennon, each Beatle has been on at least one episode of The Simpsons. George Harrison was on the episode "The B- Sharps" and Ringo was on the "The Letter." (thanks, Dieter - Turnhout, Belgium)

This was the standout track from McCartney's first solo album. Unlike George Harrison, who had 3-discs worth great songs (mostly rejected by The Beatles) for his first solo effort, Paul had little in the way of leftovers to work with. He worked up the album in his kitchen, and played all of the instruments himself. The only other performer on the album was his wife Linda, who lent backing vocals (she also took the cover photo).

Critics derided the album as an unfinished work, usually citing "Maybe I'm Amazed" as the exception. The review in Melody Maker called the other tracks "sheer banality." McCartney was annoyed that he wrote a rebuttal to the paper defending the album.

This was one of John Lennon's first songs to tell a complete story. The boy knocks on his girl's door, knows she is home because he sees her in the window, but she does not answer. Lennon wrote the song when he was inspired by the song "Silhouettes." He said, "I had that image of walking down the street and seeing her silhouetted in the window and not answering the phone." Music publisher Dick James told Lennon that it was the first "complete" song that John had ever written: It had a beginning and an end.

This starts with a vocal, which was rare for the time.

This was yet another early Beatles song originally written for another artist. "No Reply" was written for Tommy Quickly, another Liverpudlian who was also signed to Beatles manager Brian Epstein. Quickly never recorded and released the song, so the Beatles used it themselves. Quickly's story rapidly deteriorated; he had a number of singles that failed to chart, then one minor hit, "Wild Side of Life," before fading back into obscurity. This Mersey Beat article seems to indicate that he just wasn't cut out for the spotlight.

This song's demo recording was lost due to a filing error, then found again by 1993 and re-released on Anthology 1.

That's record producer George Martin tickling the ivories. Meanwhile, on the demo version, Ringo was absent from the recording session; he was laid up with tonsillitis and pharyngitis. Jimmie Nicol might have done the drum work here, since he was also drafted to replace Ringo on their upcoming tour. Ringo was back at his station by the time this album version was recorded.

The Beatles recorded this in nine takes on George Harrison's 21st Birthday (in the same session as "And I Love Her" and "I Should Have Known Better"), although in May, producer George Martin overdubbed a piano making a 10th take that wasn't used. Paul McCartney wrote this while he was on vacation in The Bahamas and away from his girlfriend. Along with McCartney on the yacht voyage were Ringo Starr and his girlfriend and future wife Maureen. McCartney told interviewer Barry Miles: "I got away from the main party but it was a bit queasy downstairs; you could smell the oil and the boat was rocking a bit and I'm not the best sailor in the world, so I wrote a little bit of it downstairs and then the rest of it on the back deck where you couldn't smell the engine." Kind of accounts for the dour mood if you're seasick.

"Things We Said Today" was recorded at the legendary Abbey Road Studios, home to The Beatles for most of their career together and given its tribute in the Abbey Road album. A Hard Day's Night was the first Beatles studio album recorded at Abbey. Abbey Road started out as a nine-bedroom townhouse built in 1930, before being converted into apartments. Gramophone bought the property in 1930, and converted it into a studio. The first European rock 'n' roll song to be recorded at Abbey Road was Cliff Richards' "Move It," released 1958.

Maureen McGovern recorded this and "For No One" as a 2-song medley for her 1992 album Baby I'm Yours. Other acts to cover this song include Dick Rivers, Mary McCaslin, Jackie DeShannon , Dwight Yoakam, and one pastiche version by Beatles-parody act The Rutles.

In the UK, this song was used as the B-side of the UK single release of "A Hard Day's Night," which was a far more up-tempo and rollicking song.

McCartney's vocal was double-tracked to make it stand out.
