21 Questions Lyrics

New York City!
You are now rapping, with 50 Cent
You gotta love it,
I just wanna chill and twist a lot
Catch suns in my 7-45
You drive me crazy shorty I
Need to see you and feel you next to me
I provide everything you need and I
Like your smile I don't wanna see you cry
Got some questions that I got to ask and I
Hope you can come up with the answers babe

Girl, It's easy to love me now
Would you love me if I was down and out?
Would you still have love for me?
Girl, It's easy to love me now
Would you love me if I was down and out?
Would you still have love for me girl?

If I fell off tomorrow would you still love me?
If I didn't smell so good would you still hug me?
If I got locked up and sentenced to a quarter century,
Could I count on you to be there to support me mentally?
If I went back to a hoopty from a Benz, would you poof and disappear like
Some of my friends?
If I was hit and I was hurt would you be by my side?
If it was time to put in work would you be down to ride?
I'd get out and peel a nigga cap and chill and drive
I'm asking questions to find out how you feel inside
If I ain't rap 'cause I flipped burgers at Burger King
Would you be ashamed to tell your friends you feelin' me?
In the bed if I used my tongue would you like that?
If I wrote you a love letter would you write back?
Now we can have a lil' drink you know a nightcap
And we could go do what you like, I know you like that

Girl, It's easy to love me now
Would you love me if I was down and out?
Would you still have love for me?
Girl, It's easy to love me now
Would you love me if I was down and out?
Would you still have love for me girl?

Now would you leave me if you're father found out I was thuggin'?
Do you believe me when I tell you, you the one I'm loving?
Are you mad 'cause I'm asking you 21 Questions?
Are you my soul mate? 'Cause if so, girl you a blessing
Do you trust me enough, to tell me your dreams?
I'm staring at ya' trying to figure how you got in them jeans
If I was down would you say things to make me smile?
I treat you how you want to be treated just teach me how
If I was with some other chick and someone happened to see?
And when you asked me about it I said it wasn't me
Would you believe me? Or up and leave me?
How deep is our bond if that's all it takes for you to be gone?
We only humans girl we make mistakes, to make it up I do whatever it take
I love you like a fat kid love cake
You know my style I say anything to make you smile

Girl, It's easy to love me now
Would you love me if I was down and out?
Would you still have love for me?
Girl, It's easy to love me now
Would you love me if I was down and out?
Would you still have love for me girl?

Could you love me in a Bentley?
Could you love me on a bus?
I'll ask 21 questions, and they all about us
Could you love me in a Bentley?
Could you love me on a bus?
I'll ask 21 questions, and they all about us

  • Inspiration for this song came when 50 Cent heard a romantic LL Cool J song, and the girl riding next to him was clearly enjoying it. This convinced him to write a song revealing his softer side and his appreciation for women - something that most gangsta rappers shied away from. The song finds 50 asking a girl if she would still love him even if he wasn't rich and famous.
  • This samples a 1978 song called "It's Only Love Doing Its Thing," which was written by Jimmie and Vella Cameron. The Canadian producer Dirty Swift (Kevin Risto), who was half of the Midi Mafia production team, put the track together. He delivered the beat to an executive at Universal Music, which was trying to sign 50 Cent to a record deal. This executive passed the track on the 50, who put lyrics to it. When 50 signed with Dr. Dre's Shady/Aftermath label, he recorded the song for his first album.
  • Nate Dogg sings the chorus on this song, which was Dr. Dre's idea (50 planned to do it himself). Nate had a great track record in this line of work, dating back to his 1994 Warren G. collaboration "Regulate," and continuing on the Snoop Dogg track "Never Leave Me Alone" and the Ludacris song "Area Codes."
  • Released as 50 Cent's second single, this hit #1 in the US in May 2003, less than three months after his first single, "In Da Club," topped the chart. 50's label was planning to release a more uptempo song as his second single, but DJs were already playing "21 Questions," so it made sense to put it out.
  • When this song hit, its producer Dirty Swift concocted an answer song (in the very literal sense) called "21 Answers," which he had the female rapper Lil' Mo record.

    Candy Shop Lyrics

    Yeah! Uh huh! So seductive!

    [Chorus]
I'll take you to the Candy Shop
I'll let you lick my lollipop
Go ahead girl and don't you stop
Keep going till you hit the spot, whoa!
(I'll take you to the candy shop)
(Boy one taste of what I got)
(I'll have you spending all you got)
(Keep going till you hit the spot, whoa!)

You can have it your way, how do you want it?
You goin' back that thing up or should I push up on it
Temperature rising, okay, let's go to the next level
Dance floor, jam packed, hot as a tea kettle
I'll break it down for ya now, baby it's simple
If you be a nympho, I'll be a nympho
In the hotel or in the back of the rental
On the beach or in the park, it's whatever you into
Got the Magic Stick, I'm the love doctor
Have your friends teasing you bout how sprung I got you
want to show me you can work it baby, no problem
Get on top, then get to bouncing round like a low rider
I'm a seasoned vet when it come to this shit
After you work up a sweat you can play wit the stick
I'm trying to explain baby the best way I can
I'll melt in your mouth girl not in your hand

    [Chorus]

Girl what we do (what we do)
And where we do (and where we do)
The things we do (things we do)
Are just between me and you (oh yeah)

Give it to me baby, nice and slow
Climb on top, ride like you in a rodeo
You ain't never heard it sound like this before
Cause I ain't never put it down like this
Soon as I come through the door, she get to pulling on my zipper
It's like it's a race, who could get undressed quicker
Isn't it ironic how erotic it is to watch her in thongs
Having me thinking about that ass after I'm gone
I touch the right spot at the right time
Lights on or lights off, she like it from behind
So seductive, you should see the way she wind
Her hips in slow mo on the floor when we grind
As long as she ain't stopping homie, I ain't stopping
Dripping wet wit sweat man it's on and popping
On my champagne campaign, bottle after bottle it's on
Now we goin' sip to every bubble now every bottle is gone

    [Chorus: x2]

    Candy Shop
  • The lyrics are about oral sex ("Lick the lollipop"). The sexual imagery is pretty blatant, and many radio stations played a heavily edited version.
  • The intro samples "Love Break" by The Salsoul Orchestra. Rap pioneers Eric B. and Rakim's sampled the song on "Paid In Full."
  • In the US, this was #1 for nine weeks.
  • The first ever candy was made in Ancient Egypt where honey was mixed with various fruits, herbs, nuts, and spices. The resulting candy was then used as an offering to the Egyptian gods. (from the book Food for Thought: Extraordinary Little Chronicles of the World by Ed Pearce)
  • The line "I melt in your mouth girl, not in your hand" is another metaphor for oral sex. It is a reference to advertising slogan for M&M chocolate candy.

    Smoke Lyrics

Somebody pull the fire alarm, girl, where you from?
'Cause you got this club on fire and outside I bet all they smell is Smoke
    (All they smell is smoke)
The way your body roll I'ma lose control
'Cause you got this club on fire and outside I bet all they smell is smoke
    (All they smell is smoke)

Pink diamonds, pink sand, beaches Aruba
Blue sapphires on days when she feeling Hoover
She hood and in the mood when I'm in the mood
Erotic, so exotic, I'm psychotic about it
I don't want forever, I just wanna taste her love sample
That product, I bet a nigga tongue go numb
She's a narcotic, that bomb shit burning, we smoking
My old flame, my Mary Jane, we got a love thing
She ain't jealous, I keep Nina around
In the small of my back in case some shit go down
Right under my Hermes, I'm hearing the word is
    Me, I'm a P.I.M.P
I let Trey hit some, then Dre hit some
Then pass it to the homies 'til we all get done
Niggas can't comprehend what this shit 'bout
Police coming, you like, put this shit out

You like smoke and you got me high
(You make a nigga want to get down)
    High
(High feeling like I'm up in a cloud)
Girl, what the fuck you done to me?
You got me feeling like you just rolled up for me
You're like smoke and you got me high
(So high make your love come down)
    High
(One time, have that ass turnt out)
Girl, what the fuck you done to me?
You got me feeling like you just rolled up for me
    You're like smoke

Shawty hot, she full blown, she hot now
100 degrees, that's with or without the top down
But when she get to working her hips you know the temperature rise
Oh lord, soon as she see the dick in her thighs
She like the stones in my cross, she flawless
I'm thinking damn, why would God give one woman all this?
You know I got the kind of conversation that make her feel like she need me
It's complicated, my occupation pimping ain't easy
Facts, I stack racks on racks and racks
Back when I was pumping crack, now my cards are black
Nigga get on my level, bark with the big dogs
If I want it I buy it, I don't care what this shit costs
Luther said it: a house is not a home without her
I had them panties on the Greyhound filled up with powder
But what she showed what she'll do for me has no limits
Her wanting is temporary cause for sure she gon' get it

You like smoke and you got me high
(You make a nigga want to get down)
    High
(High feeling like I'm up in a cloud)
Girl, what the fuck you done to me?
You got me feeling like you just rolled up for me
You're like smoke and you got me high
(So high make your love come down)
    High
(One time, have that ass turnt out)
Girl, what the fuck you done to me?
You got me feeling like you just rolled up for me
    You're like smoke

Everybody showing the love when she at the door
Turn this bitch down, that's fire in the hole
I'm trying to get it and hit it, I don't wanna pass that
Got me addicted, I'm tripping, where the stash at?
    Baby, baby, don't you know?
    Baby, baby, you're just like

Smoke and you got me high
    So high
Girl, what the fuck you done to me?
You got me feeling like you just rolled up for me
You're like smoke and you got me high

    Smoke
  • This high-powered dance track finds guest vocalist Trey Songz comparing a smoking hot girl to an actual fire. 50, on the other hand, compares her to a narcotic drug. It is the first collaboration between the pair.
  • The song was produced by Dr. Dre and Dawaun Parker. 50 Cent parted ways with Dre's Aftermath Entertainment and Interscope Records after twelve years, and this collaboration demonstrates there's no hard feelings since the rapper went out on his own. "'Smoke' is one of my favorite records off Animal Ambition," the G-Unit leader said. "It was great to have Dr. Dre produce, and Trey added so much to the song."
  • Directed by Eif Rivera, the video features a voluptuous female cop on a mission to track down the missing 50 Cent. She discovers the rapper in the trunk of a car only for the clip to end with "To Be Continued."

In an interview with The Breakfast Club, 50 said that he shot 13 videos for Animal Ambition.
  • Much of Animal Ambition was recorded in New York on the East Coast but 50 laid this cut down for the first time with Dre on the West Coast. He recalled to Digital Spy : "Initially I recorded it for Dre for his project Detox, but then I came back and listened to it again and I was like, 'Let me re-write or re-work it', because I wanted to see what it sounded like if I tried to write the song by myself."

"A lot of times with Dre, everything they make is for him and he is keeping it (laughs), then the label starts to make us at war because we're both in the audio category," 50 added. "In reality the biggest record in my career Dre produced - 'In Da Club', man."
  • Asked about his collaboration with 50 Cent on "Smoke" by The Boombox just before Animal Ambition's release, Trey Song praised the G-Unit frontman for his business savvy and musical instinct. "50's smarter than a lot of people give him credit for," he said. "The actual 'Smoke' record was for [Dr. Dre]. I was in with Dre. We did about five or six records three years ago."

    Animal Ambition
  • Asked by Digital Spy about the meaning behind the title Animal Ambition, 50 replied: "It is an untamed desire to win. I get high off these situations; I get high off being right. When you walk into the studio I'm not the guy listening to the snare by itself clap, clap, clap, clap, pop, bing, pop. I need to hear something that has the right pattern in it. I'll write the melodies and the words to it and know it's a hit."

"Knowing it's a hit is more valuable than you making it. It's about hearing a hit record, timing the hit record, getting the right producers in who have a higher possibility of walking out of that room with a hit," he continued. "Dre and Timbaland are those guys for me. It's their particular sound; Dre's is harder, his production is harder and my style of writing kind of matches it."
  • 50 Cent raps here that he's frightened of rats:

Damn scared of rats, but I'm ready for anything

The rapper explained to The Guardian that he's not talking about the pesky long-tailed rodents. "No, I'm scared of what people may say to the police for no reason," he said. "I'm the guy from the neighborhood who's becoming a symbol of hope. They look at me and go, 'It is possible to make it.' I took all the dysfunctional behavior, everything damaging or that wasn't good in my life, and I turned it into the most beautiful nightmare you can actually create. That's my life."

Go, go, go, go go, go, go, shawty
    It's your birthday
We gon' party like it's yo birthday
We gon' sip Bacardi like it's your birthday
And you know we don't give a fuck
    It's not your birthday!

    [Chorus: x2]
You can find me in the club, bottle full of bub
Look mami I got the X if you into taking drugs
I'm into having sex, I ain't into making love
So come give me a hug if you into to getting rubbed

When I pull out up front, you see the Benz on dubs
When I roll twenty deep, it's twenty knives in the club
Niggas heard I fuck with Dre, now they want to show me love
When you sell like Eminem, and the hoes they want to fuck
But homie ain't nothing change hold down, G's up
I see Xzibit in the Cutt that nigga roll that weed up
If you watch how I move you'll mistake me for a player or pimp
Been hit wit a few shells but I don't walk wit a limp
In the hood then the ladies saying "50 you hot"
They like me, I want them to love me like they love 'Pac
But holla in New York them niggas'll tell ya I'm loco
And the plan is to put the rap game in a choke hold
I'm feelin' focused man, my money on my mind
I got a mill out the deal and I'm still on the grind
Now shawty said she feeling my style, she feeling my flow
Her girlfriend want to get bi and they ready to go

    [Chorus: x2]

My flow, my show brought me the dough
That bought me all my fancy things
My crib, my cars, my pools, my jewels
Look, nigga, I came up and I ain't changed

And you should love it, way more then you hate it
Nigga you mad? I thought that you'd be happy I made it
I'm that cat by the bar toasting to the good life
You that fagot ass nigga trying to pull me back right?
When my junk get to pumping in the club it's on
I wink my eye at ya bitch, if she smiles she gone
If the roof on fire, let the motherfucker burn
If you talking bout money homie, I ain't concerned
I'm a tell you what Banks told me cause go 'head switch the style up
If the niggas hate then let 'em hate
    Watch the money pile up

    In Da Club
  • Produced by Dr. Dre and Mike Elizondo, the track was created for Eminem's group D-12 to rap over, with the intention of using it on the 8 Mile soundtrack. It never came together for D-12, but after 50 Cent signed with Dre's Shady/Aftermath label, he was brought into the studio and offered the track. According to Elizondo, he spent an hour writing the lyrics and recorded most of his vocals that night.

The song was released as 50's first single, and it became a huge hit, topping the US Hot 100 for nine weeks. Predictably, it was especially popular in clubs, where some DJs played it twice in a row to satisfy demand.
  • This was he first song 50 recorded with Dr. Dre, and his first on a major label. After being dropped by Columbia Records without releasing an album, 50's mix tapes became wildly popular in underground scene and he was heavily bootlegged on the Internet. This got the attention of Dr. Dre and Eminem, who signed him to very lucrative deal with their label, Shady/Aftermath Records.
  • The video shows 50 going through training at Shady/Aftermath Records to become a superstar. It proved prophetic as 50 did become a star. The album sold 872,000 copies the first week it was released. Eminem is the only rapper to sell more records in a week.
  • This won for Best Rap Video at the 2003 MTV Video Music Awards. 50 also won for Best New Artist In A Video.
  • 50 Cent namechecks five different rappers in this song: Dr. Dre, Eminem, Xzibit, Lloyd Banks and Tupac. While the song is about going to a club in thug style, it covers a lot of ground, including some of 50's backstory ("been hit with a few shells").
  • Beyoncé recorded a version with different lyrics that was circulated on the Internet. Like the original, it became very popular in dance clubs. Her lyrics take the point of view of a girls' night out, and is called "Sexy Lil' Thug."
  • Mary J. Blige used the beat in song called "Hooked," which she recorded with P. Diddy.
  • Other rappers who used this beat include Bubba Sparxxx, who did a version called "In The Mudd," and Cadillac Tah, one of 50 Cent's rivals, who did an angry version called "There's A Snitch In The Club." Beyoncé and Mary J. Blige also recorded variations of it. Parody versions include "In Da Pub" by British DJ 50 Pence, and "In Da Dome," which was recorded for The Calgary Flames during the 2004 NHL playoffs. A Finnish rap group called Urbaanilegenda recorded a version called Klubilla (In Da Club in Finnish). (thanks, Bertrand - Paris, France)
  • The line, "Go shorty, it's your birthday," dates back to a 1994 song by Luther Campbell of The 2 Live Crew called "It's Your Birthday," where he rapped, "Go Sheila, it's your birthday." The owner of Campbell's copyright sued 50 Cent, accusing him of stealing the line.
  • In 2007, this song was used in a commercial for Vitamin Water, with an orchestra playing the instrumental and 50 Cent conducting. 50 really did have his money on his mind: he was an early investor in Vitamin Water, and made a huge profit when the company was acquired by Coca-Cola.
  • This song became a hip-hop classic in part because of the line at the beginning, which is a much more quick and contemporary birthday tune than "Happy Birthday."

"Every day it's someone's birthday," 50 said. "So it never loses it's relevance."
  • This was chosen as 50 Cent's debut single by chance. "We couldn't decide on the first single from Get Rich," Eminem recalled on Rap Genius . "It was going to be either 'If I Can't' or 'In Da Club.' We were torn, so me, 50, Paul, Chris Lighty, and Jimmy Iovine decided to flip a coin."

50 recalled to NME that he stayed out of the argument. "I didn't want to stir the pot," he said. "In the end, though, they were deadlocked, and so they asked me and I told them, real quiet: "In Da Club". And that was it. The rest was history."

    How to Rob
  • 50 recorded this with The Trackmasters, a group of hip-hop producers affiliated with Columbia Records. 50 Cent signed a deal with Columbia in 1999, but they never released his album. Instead, 50 released it himself as a bootleg single, where it was widely circulated. He wrote this song because he wasn't making any money from his deal with Trackmasters and he was sitting back looking at the people who had money, saying "I wish I could Have that chain." Then he realized, "I could have that chain, if he ever comes into the 'hood and he ain't paying attention." (thanks, Kyle - London, ON)
  • This was included on Power of the Dollar, an as-yet-unreleased album that should have been his debut for Columbia. Instead it was not released and 50 was dropped from the label, supposedly because high bootlegging was going to eat into record sales.
  • As this circulated among the mix-tape New York underground the subsequent buzz led to Eminem's offer to sign 50 to the Shady/Aftermath label. Eminem has said that 50 is his favorite rapper.
  • This outlines how 50 would go about robbing a variety of famous artists like Jay-Z, Master P, Kirk Franklin , Blackstreet, Brian McKnight, and any other hip-hop/R&B artist you can think of. He intended it as a joke, but many other rappers took it seriously and started dissing 50, which had the effect of making him more popular.
  • After this became an underground hit, 50 was shot nine times in a drive-by outside his grandmother's house. Again, this added to his street-cred and made him even more popular.
  • Because 50 didn't have a lot of expensive jewelry or cars, he had to find something else to rap about. He called this "An outsider's desperate attempt to fit in."
  • The hook is sung by the Madd Rapper, otherwise known as Deric "D-Dot" Angelettie, who specializes in comical skits and raps. This appears on his 1999 album, Tell 'Em Why You Madd.
  • 50 laid off the attacks on his 2003 release Get Rich or Die Tryin', not wanting to gain a reputation for simply dissing other rappers. It didn't hurt sales, as it moved 872,000 copies its first week.
  • This was used on the 1999 movie In Too Deep, starring Omar Epps and LL Cool J.
