This is the title track of Chris Young's fourth studio album. The singer co-wrote six of the record's 11 songs, including this cut. "There's a lot of fun on this album and that's why I wanted to call the album A.M.," Young said. "Like the song says, 'The whole world's asleep but we're wide awake in the A.M."

This Rhett Akins, Shane McAnally and Josh Osborne penned song finds the narrator waiting desperately for a response from the object of his affection. Young told Pollstar that it's his favorite track on A.M. He explained: "It's just got this really cool slack-groove, and it's almost acoustically driven with a cajon feel. I just love the way it's written."

"I think it's got some of the coolest lines," Young continued. "There's a line in the second verse – and I hate when people line songs and here I am about to do a little bit of it – but it says:

"I pray what you ain't sayin' don't mean what all my friends say it means
Maybe you can give me just a couple of lines that I can read between."

"Man that's just some really cool songwriting," he concluded. "It's one of those songs where I said, 'Damn, why didn't I write that?' So we had to cut it for the record."

Lonely Eyes Song Chart

This ballad tells the story of a guy spotting a beautiful girl from across the bar and trying to get her attention. Young sings during the chorus:

The song was written by Johnny Bulford (Lee Brice's "A Woman Like You"), Laura Veltz (Eli Young Band's "Drunk Last Night") and Jason Matthews (Billy Currington's "Must Be Doin' Somethin' Right").

The many hours that Chris Young has spent in one of his favorite local bars was one of his reasons for choosing to cut this song. "I've spent my fair share of time at Losers (Bar & Grill) in Nashville," he admitted. "As a songwriter I like to always be observing the world around me because you never know where you'll find inspiration, and I've seen moments like what I sing about in 'Lonely Eyes' go down all the time."

"I've always said the best song wins," Young added, "and the soaring melody and smart lyrics of this song grabbed me from the first time I heard it."

The music video was directed by Adam Rothlein, who also worked on The Avett Brothers' "Another Is Waiting" clip. The visual was shot at The Cannery in Nashville and finds Chris Young performing the song as a beautiful woman looks on.
