Speaking about this tune to The Guardian the band called it "the least Alt-J song ever." They wrote the cut to appease their American label who didn't think the lead track "Hunger Of The Pine" was a "big single."

The song was written in twenty minutes and is based around a "joke riff" that vocalist and guitarist Joe Newman had been playing in rehearsals.

Drummer Thom Green said: "I tried to make the drums as cliched as possible, there's none of my personality in it."

Newman added: "And I say, 'Gee whizz', which I'm not sure is a phrase I've ever uttered before. I can imagine it appealing to American truckers with Good Riddance To Bin Laden stickers!"

The song was released to United States modern rock radio on July 15, 2014 as the second single from This Is All Yours.

The song's music video was filmed along the Guadalupe River near Austin, Texas, by director Ryan Staake, who's also helmed clips for Diplo, Robyn and Major Lazer. The clip shows some college-aged kids having fun shooting off fireworks, river rafting and riding ATVs during their summer break.

Despite the song's almost-clichéd rock sound and tongue-in-cheek video, Joe Newman insisted to DIY magazine it wasn't their intention to subvert anything. Instead, it was something they came up with spontaneously. "We really just go with what feels right when we're playing together," he asserted.

"'Left Hand Free' was a leap into a completely different world for us, but we were enjoying it, so we kept doing it, we thought it was funny, we thought we could play characters," Newman added. "That's what we do with all of our music, we do it because it sounds good."

Two nearly identical videos were made for the song, the sole difference between the gender of the lead actor. Both clips were directed by Olivier Groulx (Bastille's "Bad Blood").

The song goes back a long way – it was written before Alt-J recorded their first album.

Warm Foothills Song Chart

The song's imagery about an idyllic swimming trip are from John Bayley's memoir of his wife Iris Murdoch, Elegy for Iris. The passage recounts a happy time together before the late author's sad slide into dementia.

Iris Murdoch (1909-1999) was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease in 1997 and died two years later in Oxford.

The sunrise ballad came from the writing sessions Alt-J did for British indie film Leave To Remain.

Bright Eyes' Conor Oberst, Lianne La Havas, Marika Hackman and Sivu were recruited to add vocals and whistling which were then spliced to fit between those sung by Joe Newman.

This is a sequel to the An Awesome Wave track, "Bloodflood," which told a semi-fictional story of vocalist Joe Newman being attacked in a Southampton park called The Common.

The first line was inspired by a lyric from rapper Big Punisher's 1998 track "Twinz (Deep Cover '98)":

Dead in the middle of Little Italy.
Little did we know that we riddle some middlemen who didn't do diddle

Newman explained to NME: "There's a gang in Southampton (his hometown) called The Mandela Boys. We were scared s---less of them when we were kids."

"The next line, 'Little did I know then that the Mandela Boys soon become Mandela Men' refers to the narrator wondering whether they're still in the gang or if they've just all got jobs and kids now."

Joe Newman explained the story of the song to Nothing But Hope and Passion : "Bloodflood began as just a riff and a melody that eventually became a verse idea," he said. "It didn't really dawn on any of any of us to turn it into Bloodflood Part II until we started writing towards a second album. I think as the ideas started to evolve, we started thinking about having a Bloodflood Part II and it being related to the other side of the story."

"The first part of the story is about a guy that's been slapped," Newman added, "while the second is about the guy that's slapped him."
