Bitter Rivals

Guitarist Derek Miller told NME about this song with the subject matter of moving on. "It's celebrating coming out of a situation that I didn't think I would be ever able to come out of," he explained. "I had been in the darkest, nastiest situation. I came to terms with my father's death finally, that didn't happen until February (2013). My mom has been in remission for two years now so she's in a great place. I'm in the best place of my life. I'm not going to boo-hoo about it now, but that shattered me for years. When you're in it, you just can't see out of it. But when I cam out of it, I was like 'Oh my god.'"

Vocalist Alexis Krauss told NME about the recording of this dog-barking, finger-snapping two chord noise-pop banger: "I had my dog in the studio, and they were setting up to do guitars, and I was like "OK this will be a good time. I'll take my dog out to go pee and I'll be back up by the time they start tracking' and this was literally five minutes, and in one take, it was just like the scrappiest, gnarliest sound. You know? There was no tweaking, there was no fu--ing around with it. We knew it was good and we just left it."

The song's music video ends with the message "Be good to each other." Krauss explained to Stereogum : "We thought it would be great to end something that had an aggressive or violent imagery with something kind of humorous and sweet. You know, I was a teacher before I was in Sleigh Bells so being positive and having that kind of energy has always been a part of Sleigh Bells. We're also constantly using the phrase, 'Work hard. Be nice.' It was the phrase I constantly used as my mantra for my kids when I was teaching."

Q magazine asked Derek Miller the meaning of the lyrics "You are my bitter rival, but I need you for survival." He replied: "I'd rather leave that lyric open. It could be anything, it could be a war with yourself, an enemy, a girlfriend or boyfriend – it's about being forced to step your game up. That's definitely a big theme. I've got a lot of demons, and making records is one way to deal with them."

Sugarcane

Guitarist Derek Miller told NME this is a personal song. He explained: "The first lyric is, 'So so sleeping on the ground tonight. I couldn't breath so I had to move east,' I was born in Pahokee, Florida which is in south Florida in the middle of the state. And I was raised in Belglade where my dad was a sugarcane farmer. You have to burn the fields as part of the harvest, to shuck the cane. And it literally rains ashes from the sky. It sounds like a very nice, apocalyptic image. It's not poetic, it's insane. It's crazy, it's surreal. And I remember that at the age of four, and I had terrible asthma so I couldn't breath. That's why we ended up moving east to Jupiter, to the Ocean. The doctor said, 'this kid needs clean air' and I've since grown out of it. It's a really personal song."

Sing Like a Wire

Guitarist Derek Miller originally came up with this song in 2005, and it was one of the first things Alexis Krauss sang when they formed Sleigh Bells in 2008. Miller told NME: "I didn't know what to do with it from a production standpoint. I tried it on Treats but it was too macho and meaty and big-sounding. IT was too muscular. So I had to thin it out. That was sort of the opposite approach, to sort of thin it out which is why the verses are really tiny sounding."

The song starts off with a nod to Michael Jackson's legendary producer, Quincy Jones. "Quincy Jones, his autobiography definitely changed my life," Miller told NME. "If you listen to those horn stabs in the intro, it's the beginning of 'Bad.' It was sort of done as a joke? But besides that I just think it sounds bad ass. The tempo as well it's like, 108 bpm."

Tiger Kit

Multi-instrumentalist Derek Miller admitted to NME that he never really got the guitar sound that he was looking for on this song. "It will always drive me crazy," he said. "I will always hear that song and know what it could sound like, which is a problem. It has the closest thing we have to a solo on a Sleigh Bells record, I guess. It kind of rips off Jimmy Page."

However, Miller does love vocalist Alexis Krauss' Rhythm Nation reference on the second verse when she sings, "Never trust a tiger that can't be tamed." He told NME: "I think we were both really into Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. We're both huge Janet Jackson fans. I think you killed it, you have a lot of attitude."

This was the last song Sleigh Bells recorded for Bitter Rivals. Guitarist Derek Miller told NME: "By the end there's just this mess of emotion and ideas. Not disaster, but the lyric just flips last second at the end. 'There's a heart in my chest where a hole used to be. There's a hole in my chest where a heart used to...be' And then it's like 'I'm sending gummy bears to the electric chair,' which is so ridiculous, it's gotta be the most ridiculous lyric ever written and I love it. I love it. I remember we were like, 'Can we do this? Can you sing this? Can you sing this and get away with this?' You know, the jury's out. But for me, I was like 'cool, the record's done.' You know what I mean with that? You know, 'Bitter Rivals' and then of course 'Minnie' and 'Sing Like a Wire' and then you know it starts to shift on 'Young Legends' but then I feel like, yeah it just turns into something very different by the second half."

"It was an inspired moment," continued Miller, "it happened very quickly. That song has immediacy and sounds very inspired to me. And that's where we were at. We were at the end of the record, and you're supposed to be tapped out. But we're still on our toes, and I was like my first thought was like 'How am I going to get through a year without making another record.' But that was a good feeling, we just finished and I'm already dying. That song, it was like, it feels like we can go anywhere from here. I feel like we can go anywhere from here."
