Take It Like a Man

This song features a guest vocal turn from Scissor Sisters' Jake Shears. Cher described the song to Billboard magazine as "very double-entendre," adding that "it's a beautiful song that's crazy and raucous, and rocks out and is a great dance song."

This includes some vocoder effects on Cher's and Shear's vocals. Cher previously employed vocal manipulation to great impact on her 1998 chart-topping single "Believe." "What we did with his voice is so strange," Cher told Billboard, "but I know he's gonna love it."

The song was co-produced by British record producer Mark Taylor who was also responsible for creating the vocal effects on "Believe."

Lovers Forever

This the only track on Closer To The Truth that Cher was involved in writing. The singer originally penned it with Canadian songwriter Shirley Eikhard (Bonnie Rait, Anne Murray) for the 1994 film adaptation of Anne Rice's Interview with the Vampire. "They didn't love it and there were no other vampire outlets then, so I held it," Cher explained to USA Today. The "Believe" songstress added that she seldom records her own material because "it's moody and introspective, a bit dark and very personal. I write about Kurt Cobain's death and homeless people. It's not for everybody."

Sirens

This poignant and soaring anthem was written by American indie singer Nell Bryden and inspired by her hometown New York, and her personal experience in the devastating aftermath of 9/11. Having avoided writing about the events for ten years, Bryden began describing her experience to Patrick Mascall at Metrophonic Studios as the ten-year anniversary of 9/11 approached and by the end of the day she had completed the song. It was included on the singer-songwriter's 2012 Shake The Tree album.

This sweeping-strings weepy ballad was penned by Pink and her frequent collaborator, Billy Mann. Cher described it to Billboard magazine as, "the ballad that all the women cry at."

The song is the closing track of Cher's 26th album, Closer To The Truth. Dark Lady

This was written by The Ventures keyboard player Johnny Durrill.

This is about a woman who visits a famous fortune teller. The fortune teller (the "dark lady") tells her to break up with her boyfriend. Later on, the shocked protagonist remembers where she smelt the fortune teller's perfume before: on her bed after a night with her lover. She returns to the dark lady with a gun and finds her beau making love to the fortune teller. In a split decision, she pulls the trigger and kills the dark lady.

Johnny Durrill: "I spent a week in his (Snuff Garrett, Cher's producers) office playing him songs, one of which Cher recorded. Later, when I was on tour in Japan with the Ventures, I was writing an interesting song. I telegraphed the unfinished lyrics to Garrett. He said to 'make sure the bitch kills him.' Hence, in the song both the lover and fortune teller were killed. That song became 'Dark Lady' which Cher cut; it went to number one in 1974.
