Babylon Lyrics

Friday night I'm going nowhere
All the lights are changing green to red
Turning over TV stations
Situations running through my head
Looking back through time
You know it's clear that I've been blind, I've been a fool
To open up my heart to all that jealousy,
That bitterness, that ridicule

Saturday I'm running wild
And all the lights are changing red to green
Moving through the crowds I'm pushing
Chemicals are rushing in my bloodstream

Only wish that you were here
You know I'm seeing it so clear
I've been afraid
To show you how I really feel
Admit to some of those bad mistakes I've made

And if you want it
Come and get it
Crying out loud
The love that I was
Giving you was
Never in doubt
Let go your heart
Let go your head
And feel it now
Let go your heart
Let go your head
And feel it now

Babylon, Babylon, Babylon

Sunday all the lights of London shining,
Sky is fading red to blue
Kicking through the autumn leaves
And wondering where it is you might be going to

Turning back for home
You know I'm feeling so alone
I can't believe
Climbing on the stair
I turn around to see you smiling there
In front of me

And if you want it
Come and get it
Crying out loud
The love that I was
Giving you was
Never in doubt

Let go your heart
Let go your head
And feel it now
Let go your heart
Let go your head
And feel it now

Let go your heart
Let go your head
And feel it now
Let go your heart
Let go your head
And feel it now

Babylon
  • This is about a guy whose girlfriend who has left him. Once he realizes he has allowed fear to block his path to love, he decides he wants her back.
  • Gray is a singer/songwriter born in Manchester, England. He recorded his first album in 1993. After the failure of that and his two subsequent albums due to neglect from prior record labels, it was thanks to the tuned ear of Dave Matthews that Gray finally found success. Matthews signed Gray to his label, ATO Records and put out Gray's album White Ladder. This was the first single; it captured the attention of listeners and quickly spread like wildfire on radio stations worldwide. White Ladder gradually built up sales and in the UK it finally hit the #1 spot 2 years and 5 months after it was released, the second longest run to #1 by any album. Only T Rex's "My People Were Fair And Had sky In Their Hair" took longer, at nearly 4 years.
  • Babylon was a major city in Mesopotamia, and is located in what is now Iraq. The Hanging Gardens Of Babylon are one of the 7 wonders of the ancient world.

    Mutineers Lyrics

You know the way it is
    These thoughts are Mutineers
Trying to shake the monkey off my back
    So beat the island drum
    And steady as she come
And all the stores are closing for the lack
To drink the damn place dry
    Only plan of attack
    And babe
    Sure feels good
    Sure feels good
    This moving close
    This moving close
    Sure feels good babe

    And hey
    What could they know
    What could they know
    'Bout what we have
    Yeah what we have
    What could they know babe?

    The early warning signs
All lit up in my mind
    It’s true you know
Some things weren’t meant to be
    Until your secret’s out
    It’s your worst enemy

    And babe
    Sure feels good
    Sure feels good
    This moving close
    This moving close
    Sure feels good babe

    And hey
    What could they know
    What could they know
    'Bout what we have
    Yeah what we have
    What could they know babe?

    Time is ours to burn
    Is ours to burn
    We got that glide
    That freewheel glide
    It’s ours to burn babe

    Oh babe
    Sure feels good
    Sure feels good
    This moving close
    This moving close
    Sure feels good babe, ooo

Kick off your shoes babe and move

    Mutineers
  • This is the title track of David Gray's Mutineers album. His collaborator and producer on the record was Andy Barlow, who is best known as one one half of Lamb, the British Electronica band of the '90s.

"His brief was – don't let me make the same record I've made before, take me out of my comfort zone," said Gray. "And he's a very gentle kind of guy, but courageous. He really took me on creatively in a way that no one else has ever done. So I thought, yeah, this is going to work, but it was a tortured process because I found it so hard to take at times that he would tear up bits of my work in front of my eyes!"

    Gulls Lyrics

This land belongs to the Gulls
And the gulls to their cry
And their cry to the wind

And the wind belongs to no-one
    The wind belongs to no-one

I gave my breath to the song
    To the song, wasn't mine
Neither of ship nor of sea
Neither of glass nor of wine

Leaving this ghost of a road
    I'm climbing hand over hand
    Toward that pinprick of light

Toward the seed that God sowed
Toward the seed that God sowed
Toward the seed that God sowed
Toward the seed that God sowed

Toward the seed that God sowed
Toward the seed that God sowed
Toward the seed that God sowed
Toward the seed that God sowed

    Oh baby
Try to recognise it in my mind
Try to stamp it out before it happens
I try to recognise it in my mind
    Try to stamp it out

The writing's on, the writing's on
    The writing's on the wall
The writing's on, the writing's on
    The writing's on the wall

The writing's on, the writing's on
    The writing's on the wall
The writing's on, the writing's on
    The writing's on the wall

The writing's on, the writing's on
    The writing's on the wall
The writing's on, the writing's on
    The writing's on the wall

The writing's on, the writing's on
    The writing's on the wall
The writing's on, the writing's on the wall

    Gulls
  • This windswept album closer sums up Gray's approach to songwriting. "There's a yearning for removal from earthly stuff, you are in music, and gone," he told The Daily Telegraph. "That's how it feels to me, music is the land of the gulls, and the wind that blows through it is nobody's, you can't take ownership of it, it's just there, you have to surrender to it."
  • Here are some gull fun facts:

The herring gull's cry features in the opening of BBC Radio 4's long-running program Desert Island Discs.

Toronto police arrested Yankee outfielder Dave Winfield in 1983 for "causing unnecessary suffering to an animal" after Winfield threw a baseball during warm-ups and accidentally killed a seagull.

Students from Leicester University in England showed that 2,425,907 seagulls would have been needed to lift a giant peach, not 501 as in Roald Dahl's story.

A seagull drinks salt water because it has special glands that filter out the salt.
  • David Gray first came up with this song after coming off the road in 2011. "I sat down at the piano," he recalled to Artist Direct . "I started to get into some somber, moody chords. They sounded interesting. I started sketching a lyric. I said, "I don't want to make this dingy middle age music that vaguely moans about being alive. I want to be saying, 'Hallelujah' in a different way!"

Gray decided to approach Mutineers in a different way and began to work back from words into music. "It's the wrong way around for me," he said. "Usually, I go from the melody and rhythm into lyrics. In doing so, I had some interesting success. Then, I began to use other people's words."

This song came from a Belgian poem by Herman de Coninck called Just As This Island Belongs to the Gulls ."I took it downstairs, simplified it, and found a chord sequence that began to walk," Gray said. "I started to write. When I wrote the first line, it really got my attention. It was the s--t I was after. I was finding something new, and it was a major shard of light coming through."
  • Herman de Coninck (1944 - 1997) was the editor of the popular Belgian weekly radio and television magazine HUMO between 1970-83. His first volume of poetry, De Lenige Liefde, appeared in 1969, and became the best-selling volume of 20th-century Flemish poetry, winning several literary prizes. Just As This Island Belongs to the Gulls was translated into English by Laure-Anne Bosselaar and Kurt Brown in 2006.

    Last Summer Lyrics

Baby, make like we did Last Summer
Oh now baby, make like we did last year
    Dived, plunged into your eyes
Living every hour like a century
    There will I always be

Want it, not till it’s good and ready
Good and ready to break like a diamond wave
Diamond wave now, to take me and drag me under
So far under, that I can’t hardly breathe

    Dived, plunged into your eyes
Living every hour like a century
    There will I always be

    Last Summer
  • David Gray joined forces with producer/songwriter/remixer Andy Barlow for his Mutineers album. This was the first song they completed together. Gray recalled to Artist Direct : "That really came out very beautifully from a small inconsequential song I had that I didn't even think of being on the main record. We had this track, and it really expanded. I wanted to see where Andy was taking it. It was somewhere I hadn't been before. That was very exciting."

Andy Barlow has also worked with Elbow and Damien Rice but is best known as one one half of the 1990s British Electronica band Lamb.
