Down Lyrics

Chill. light on my sight as my ego becomes
A funky child with some words on my tongue
Be like intake of breath and my mouth gets loose
While i scatter my spit i dream of juice
Have you ever made out in dark hallways
Displayed a kiss that made your day or say
Play a track from your record collection
It's your mix, congratulations

[Chorus:]
We've changed a lot and then some some
Know that we have always been Down down
And if i ever didn't thank you you
Then just let me do it now

I bet you light up when we start the show follow me now
Very closely because i told you so you know
We glow because we throw sun rays
We be freaky and we want to stay

[Chorus]

Lightning strikes yo we be in that violent force of light
Guaranteed to turn it out as bad as dolemite
'cause we're dope kidchange like a chameleon
And the channel whenever that wack show real world is on
You know we dazzle like ghetto box boomin' battles
Rattle inside your head feel redeemed like cola bottles
Fall in love with you teachers on the wax
We are self made check the technique 311 in LA

[Chorus]

Keep my feet on the ground
Keep my head in the clouds
Electrified by the sound
Comes from the down
And

[Chorus]

Down
  • Written by 311 lead singer Nick Hexum and DJ S. A. Martinez, this is a song for the fans (who were "down" with them) to thank them for being loyal before the band became successful, and also an expression of gratitude for their bandmates.

311 emerged from humble beginnings in Nebraska, and when their second major-label album, Grassroots, made the albums chart (at #193) and got some radio play, they knew it was going to work out for them. "There was momentum swelling," Hexum said in his Songfacts interview . "We knew we were blowing up, and it was strictly from a grassroots basis, and not from being media darlings or anything like that. It's a 'thank you' to both the band members and the fans."
  • This was a breakthrough single for 311, marking their first appearance on the Billboard Airplay chart (it wasn't released as a single, so it wasn't eligible for the Hot 100) and getting them on MTV. The song isn't typical pop fare, but it made an adventurous addition to many playlists looking to branch out from grunge, hip-hop and easy-going pop (we're talking about you, Hootie & The Blowfish).
  • 311 performed this on Late Night with Conan O'Brien on August 23, 1996. (thanks, Kiona - Huntsville, AL)
  • The music video, which makes liberal use of various fun-house effects, was directed by Josh Taft, who also did the Stone Temple Pilots vids for "Plush" and "Sex Type Thing."

    Down
  • The first song to be made available from the Kooks' Listen album, it received its worldwide premiere on Zane Lowe's March 11 2014 BBC Radio 1 show. "Down" was released on April 20 via Virgin/EMI and was described as "a mission statement from a band that have rediscovered what they loved about making music in the first place."
  • The R&B-influenced song was written by the band's frontman Luke Pritchard and Hip-Hop pioneer Inflo, who co-produced Listen. Recording sessions were split between London and LA. "With this record we didn't do any rehearsing beforehand," Pritchard said. "I'd write a song with Inflo or on my own, put it up and we'd all play over it. There was a real freedom to the process."

    Down Song Chart
  • This is a nod to Neil Young, who had a song called "Down By The River." It's done in his style.
  • The band recorded this for Led Zeppelin 4, but they thought it wasn't good enough at the time. It was included on Physical Graffiti to fill the double album.
  • Jimmy Page and Robert Plant wrote this in 1970 as an acoustic piece at Bron-yr-Aur, the cottage in Wales where they went after a grueling US tour. The cottage had no electricity or running water.
  • Led Zeppelin never played this live.
  • Plant recorded a version with Tori Amos in 1995 for the Led Zeppelin tribute album Encomium. Plant is a huge fan of Amos and wanted to get a different take on the song by having her sing while he played guitar. Tori is also a huge Zeppelin fan.
  • It was Robert Plant's idea to include this song on the album, though not everyone agreed with him. Says Plant: "Everybody laughed when I suggested to include 'Down By The Seaside' on Physical Graffiti." John Paul Jones in particular hated this track. (thanks, Bertrand - Paris, France)
