Papi Pacify

An R&B musician and dancer of Jamaican and Spanish descent, Tahliah Barnett moved from her childhood home in rural Gloucestershire, to London where she became known as Twigs (for the way her bones crack). The acronym FKA was later affixed at the request of another artist called Twigs. The young singer paid her dues as a back-up dancer in Jessie J's video for "Do It Like A Dude," and also appeared in a BBC comedy sketch called Beyoncé Wants Groceries, in which she can be seen dancing in a supermarket.

This smoldering track was the lead single from Twigs' critically acclaimed EP2, which was released on indie label Young Turks (The xx, Jack Penate) on September 10 2013. The moody and intimate cut features production from Yeezus collaborator Arca.

The song's music video was directed by FKA Twigs and Tom Beard. She told NME regarding its concept: "It's important to run with your first instinct. The video is meant to be a physical manifestation of emotional turmoil with a lover."

Water Me

FKA Twigs' first single was something that she and New York producer Alejandro Arca came up with at the end of a session. She recalled to Redbull Music Academy : "It wasn't a particularly successful session up until that point. We were making these beats and I was whisper-rapping over some stuff, and it all felt a bit empty. We had half-an-hour left at the end, and we started playing together. I was on the Tempest, doing some drums. And Alejandro started adding some synths. The Tempest has this great function where you can record something straight into it and start manipulating it. Very quickly the words came to me, out of nowhere. I'm not going to lie and say I laboured over it for ages. I think I wrote it in about seven minutes."

"It's really emotional," Twigs added with a laugh. "We were really emotional in the studio on that day, I remember. Two emo little souls, together. That's very unlike us. Usually in the studio it's... it's ridiculous. We'll work for an hour and then put on some Janet Jackson and dance around the room. Then we'll put on some merengue tune and tango through the studio. We work very quickly. Technically, he's so fast, which really suits me. I don't like to labour over things. In my experience, the first idea is usually the best one. And once I start to think about it, it implodes on itself."

Video Girl

This song finds Tahliah Barnett, aka FKA Twigs, reflecting on her past as a background dancer in big-budget music videos for artists like Kylie Minogue, Ed Sheeran and Taio Cruz. She was also in a couple of Jessie J's clips ("Do It Like A Dude" and "Price Tag"), the latter in which she can be seen dressed like a marionette. Barnett told Pitchfork , "I wrote that very shortly after I stopped being a video girl."

"When I got signed," she continued, "I stopped dancing - I'd given up that part of my life. I would go out, and somebody would be like, 'Oh, I recognize you!' I'd hope it was because they'd heard my music, but they'd say, 'Are you that girl from the Jessie J video?' I'd always say 'no,' and they'd be like, 'You're lying!' I'd say, 'No! It's not me.' They'd say, 'You look just like her.' And I'd be like, 'I know. So many people say that! It's weird!"

The black-and-white video was directed by LA based Filmmaker Kahlil Joseph, who previously helmed the clip for Aloe Blacc's "I Need A Dollar." The visual takes place on Death Row as we see Twigs dancing around a prison inmate who is laid out on a gurney. The promo also features a bloody cameo from rapper Travis Scott.

Lights On Song Chart

For many, the initial reaction to the song's chorus is that it is about physical vulnerability in a sexual relationship. However Twigs told Pitchfork the lyric isn't as lustful as it seems. "Some of the songs that people think are the most sexual are not at all to me," she said. "Like when I sing, 'If you want to touch me you can do it with the lights on,' that's a metaphor for letting certain people see the different, ugly sides of you that others won't be able to see."

Somewhere along the line the chorus got altered as the lyric actually goes, "When I trust you we can do it with the lights on."

Pendulum Song Chart

This somber cut finds FKA Twigs detailing a lover who doesn't take her seriously as she croons about being "so lonely trying to be yours."

The song title doesn't appear in the lyrics. However the production of Paul Epworth (Adele's 21, Coldplay's Ghost Stories) softly sways back and forth like a "pendulum."

The song's music video was directed by FKA Twigs herself. The singer is a classically trained dancer, and is able to contort her body into many different positions. In this clip she is in a bondage type scenario tied up by her rope-like hair. The visual is playing on the idea of the constraints of love that Twigs is singing about.
