Hook

Put simply, the song is a sort of satire. A hook is the part of the song that people like; the part that makes you remember the song. Normally it's the chorus, but not always. Lead singer John Popper, who wrote this song, is saying that no matter what you put in a song, if it has a hook people like, you can say whatever you want and people will like the song and buy into it - "It doesn't matter what I say as long as I sing with in-FLEC-tion." He knows that a hit song needs to have a catchy hook, whether or not it takes any talent or emotion. "The hook brings you back" is the hook of the song, so he can say whatever he wants in this part and get away with it. The message is that you don't need deep, meaningful lyrics to make people like your music. You need a good hook, and it helps to be charismatic. On a deeper level, this can relate to superficial society in general, which is demonstrated in the video which shows beauty pageant contestants and a politician singing the song - they're all show and no substance, but most people don't notice or care.

This song's entire melodic line is directly based on a piece of classical music: Pachelbel's "Canon in D." The well-recognized melody can also be considered an aural "hook," giving the title another amusing twist. (thanks, Ianna - Richmond, VA)

This was the follow up to Blues Traveler's first hit, "Run-Around." The band formed in high school in 1986 and released their first album 1990. Four was their fourth album, released in September, 1994. By the time "Hook" hit the charts, the album had been out for about a year.

The second verse contains an interesting bit of wordplay, with Popper singing, "To confuse the issue I refer to familiar heroes from long ago," before getting into the Peter Pan story, as he sings about Captain Hook trying to bring Peter Pan back to Neverland - another way the "Hook" brings you back. Popper puts a lot of literary references in his songs, also mentioning Rin Tin Tin and Anne Boleyn in this one. When we spoke with Blues Traveler guitarist Chan Kinchla, he told us that the Peter Pan story was a favorite of the band. "I think all musicians in rock bands have kind of a Peter Pan complex," he said. "We always loved that innocent wonder and that vibe."

Steal My Girl Song Chart

The lead single from Four, the song was penned by Louis and Liam with frequent One D songwriters Ed Drewett, Wayne Hector, Julian Bunetta and John Ryan. The same six songsmiths also wrote the Midnight Memories track "Little White Lies" together.

This was made available everywhere apart from Britain on September 29 2014. It was released in One Direction's home country a fortnight later. A remix of the recording by Liam (dubbed as the Big Payno Remix) was made the B Side in the UK.

The song is a piano ballad that has the guys lamenting about those who want to steal their girlfriends away. Julian Bunetta revealed to MTV News that there were actually several girls that inspired the track. "It's based on everybody's experience," he said, "you have six guys in a room that have all been in love before and we all have jealousy — some are better at hiding it than others, but we don't like when people hit on our girlfriends."

"But it was more of a joyous thing, it just speaks to how happy you are with this person," Bunetta continued. "If you have something great, everyone is going to try and take it from you. And that also speaks to the fanbase, I think, 'cause of other groups [trying to steal the 1D fanbase] … there are a lot of layers."

Bunetta revealed that the idea behind the song happened pretty randomly. "I think, if I recall correctly, we were playing a drum beat and it just sort of came out," he recalled. "Somebody said that line and it was like, 'Woah, yeah I relate to that,' and we all looked around and was like, 'Yeah, I like that, I can totally relate to that.'"

The piano at the beginning of the song is similar to both New Found Glory's 2006 track, "It's Not Your Fault" and Journey's 1983 single "Faithfully." New Found Glory's frontman, Chad Gilbert, picked up on the resemblance and jokingly tweeted:

Props to the @onedirection "steal my girl" single for reworking the "it's not your fault" piano part into a top 40 single. Let me get a cut.

Bumetta wasn't aware of the resemblance until he read the song reviews. "When we sat down and played the piano lick, nobody had any references in their head about what they wanted to write or anything and then I saw all the things about that [Journey song]," he told MTV News. "At the end of the day, the lyric and the melody have nothing to do with any other song that I have ever heard. Sometimes there's only so many things you can do with a piano at that tempo."

The song's music video was directed by Ben and Gabe Turner, who both produced the 2011 TV movie One Direction: A Year in the Making. The clip features comic actor Danny DeVito as the visual's fictional director and we see the It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia star direct the guys through some bizarre antics with a juvenile chimpanzee, sumo wrestlers, acrobats and a marching band.

One Direction became the first group to have their first four albums debut at #1 in the US when their appropriately titled long player, Four, topped the Billboard 200 album chart in its first week.

This was written by Ed Sheeran, who previously penned One Direction's Take Me Home tracks "Little Things" and "Over Again," as well as "Moments" from the deluxe version of their debut album.

Ed explained to Nova's Kent 'Smallzy' Small that he initially declined Simon Cowell's request for him to pen a song for 4. "I wasn't gonna do it... basically, my record label got very annoyed that my first #1 was a song that I gave to someone else," he said, "and they were kind of like "don't do it."'

However, while in Copenhagen, inspiration struck and Ed, "went into the rest room, where it's big and reverberative" and penned the tune. He said that his record label didn't mind as, "it's one of these songs that I wouldn't have used for myself, it's written specifically for them."

Simon Cowell explained to Capital Radio how the collaboration came about. "The funny story was that Ed came down to see me at Got Talent, as he was performing. He came up to the dressing room and I went, 'Where's the One Direction song?' And he said, 'I didn't know you wanted a song from me', and I went, 'Yeah'."

"And then literally a week later he comes round to my house with his manager one night, turned up around 11 o'clock and said, 'Do you like this song?' and he played me '18' and it took me about a millionth of a second to say yes."
