This song was written as somewhat of a joke after Alex Kapranos came home from a party one night where people were yelling the most ridiculous and profane things to each other. The lyrics are basically some things that he heard different women shouting at him over the noise of the party.

Evil Eye

The evil eye was an ancient and widespread belief that certain individuals had the power to inflict injury or bad luck with a glance. Franz Ferdinand frontman Alex Kapranos told NME: "My dad's Greek and in a lot of Mediterranean cultures they have the tradition of the evil eye. Certain people in my family have always felt that they have this extrasensory power that they can predict things, so I tried it."

The song's music video was directed by Diane Martel, who oversaw the clip for Robin Thicke's "Blurred Lines." The visual pays tribute to low-budget horror films.

This song finds Alex Kapranos imagining erasing the pain of an unhappy relationship by reversing time until the couple part "as happy strangers." The song starts with loops of cut-up organ and guitar played backwards before a spooky riff drives it on. Kapranos told NME: "We recorded it in Sweden with Bjorn of Peter Bjorn and John, but it was too beautiful so then we took it back to Scotland to f--k it up a bit."

The band's vocalist Alex Kapranos told Sunday Times Culture magazine: "I don't see the point of going, 'I'm really, really in love.' There's nothing more boring than that." This song is a humorous reference to the band name: Gavrilo Princip, a member of the Serbian rebel group "The Black Hand" shot the archduke of Austria, Franz Ferdinand, in Serajevo in 1914 ("bang bang, Gavril Princip, bang bang, shoot me Gravillo"). This is about one of the band's friends who was drunk and ended up dancing with a man.

The lyrics, "Come and dance with me, come and dance with me, so come and dance with me" are repeated throughout this song, mostly leading into the chorus. However, at a live performance recorded at the Amsterdam Paradiso in 2003, Kapronis sings instead, "come and dance with me, come and dance with me, so come all over me." If you look at the lyrics printed in the official Franz Ferdinand album booklet, the line, "So come all over me" is crossed out, and is not sung on the official album recording.
