Evil Eye

The evil eye was an ancient and widespread belief that certain individuals had the power to inflict injury or bad luck with a glance. Franz Ferdinand frontman Alex Kapranos told NME: "My dad's Greek and in a lot of Mediterranean cultures they have the tradition of the evil eye. Certain people in my family have always felt that they have this extrasensory power that they can predict things, so I tried it."

The song's music video was directed by Diane Martel, who oversaw the clip for Robin Thicke's "Blurred Lines." The visual pays tribute to low-budget horror films.

Franz Ferdinand vocalist Alex Kapranos explained the song's meaning to NME: "It's about searching for an answer, whether it's religion, or a belief system, or just somebody to admire."

Veronica Falls vocalist Roxanne Clifford sings on this track. Clifford's face can be seen on the single cover for Franz Ferdinand's "Do You Want To."

This was released on April 7, 2014 as the fifth single from Right Thoughts, Right Words, Right Action. The B-side, "Erdbeer Mund," is sung by Kapranos entirely in German. Its title translates to "Strawberry Mouth."

This song finds Alex Kapranos imagining erasing the pain of an unhappy relationship by reversing time until the couple part "as happy strangers." The song starts with loops of cut-up organ and guitar played backwards before a spooky riff drives it on. Kapranos told NME: "We recorded it in Sweden with Bjorn of Peter Bjorn and John, but it was too beautiful so then we took it back to Scotland to f--k it up a bit."
