The World Is Not Enough Lyrics

I know how to hurt
I know how to heal
I know what to show
And what to conceal
I know when to talk
And I know when to touch
No one ever died from wanting too much

Chorus:
The World Is Not Enough
But it is such a perfect place to start my love
And if you're strong enough
Together we can take the world apart my love

People like us
Know how to survive
There's no point in living
If you can't feel alive
We know when to kiss
And we know when to kill
If we can't have it all
Then nobody will

Chorus
I...I feel safe
I...I feel scared
I...I feel ready
And yet unprepared

Chorus
The world is not enough
The world is not enough

The World Is Not Enough
  • This is for the theme song to the James Bond movie of the same name. The lyrics were written by Don Black, who also co-wrote "Diamonds Are Forever." David Arnold, who wrote the music, has also composed for British sketch show Little Britain and other Bond films, including Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace.
  • In the music video, Shirley Manson is a robot built to look identical to a singer. She kills the singer and takes her place in a concert. The crowd cheers for her, not knowing she carries a bomb inside her set to detonate at the concert. (thanks, Beth - MN, for above 2)
  • In 2006, IGN placed the song ninth on their list of the top ten Bond themes.

    Medication Lyrics

    I don't need an education
I learnt all I need from you
They've got me on some Medication
My point of balance was askew
It keeps my temperature from rising
My blood is pumping through my veins

    [Chorus]
Somebody get me out of here
    I'm tearing at myself
Nobody gives a damn about me or anybody else

I wear myself out in the morning
You're asleep when I get home
Please don't call me self defending
You know it cuts me to the bone
    And it's really not surprising
    I hold a force I can't contain

    [Chorus]

And still you call me co-dependent
Somehow you lay the blame on me
And still you call me co-dependent
Somehow you lay the blame on me

Somebody get me out of here
    I'm tearing at myself
I've got to make a point these days
    To extricate myself

    [Chorus]

And still you call me co-dependent
Somehow you lay the blame on me
And still you call me co-dependent

Somehow you lay the blame on me [Repeat: x3]

    Medication
  • Garbage lead singer Shirley Manson explained the origins of this song: "I'd gotten really sick when I arrived in Madison, and I was really frightened because I was all by myself in a foreign country and I had no idea about how the medical system works here. I was feeling very isolated and very paranoid. I was terrified. I remember I was sitting in the studio waiting on some of the boys arriving, and I was freaked out so I wrote these words out really quickly in two minutes. When the boys came in I said, 'I've got a song and we have to record it now!' It's a reflection on past ills in a way." (thanks, Beth - MN)
  • Shirley Manson has a well documented history of anxiety, self-esteem issues and periods of self-injury, which lends a literalized double meaning to the line "it cuts me to the bone." The opening line, "I don't need an education" might directly refer to a particularly depressive time in her life when she was bullied at school. Manson particularly seems to be calling for an end to stigmatizing depressed people and those who use medication to treat it: "And still you call me co-dependent. Somehow you lay the blame on me."
  • In 2005, Blender magazine asked Manson what medication she was on. She said, "I'm so chock-full of pills I literally couldn't even tell you how many I take. It's frightening. I have pills to fix everything." Asked if they were working, she said, "You tell me."

Only Happy When It Rains Lyrics

I'm Only Happy When It Rains
I'm only happy when it's complicated
And though I know you can't appreciate it
I'm only happy when it rains

You know I love it when the news is bad
Why it feels so good to feel so sad?
I'm only happy when it rains

    Pour your misery down
Pour your misery down on me
    Pour your misery down
Pour your misery down on me

I'm only happy when it rains
I feel good when things are goin' wrong
I only listen to the sad, sad songs
I'm only happy when it rains

I only smile in the dark
My only comfort is the night gone black
I didn't accidentally tell you that
I'm only happy when it rains
You'll get the message by the time I'm through
When I complain about me and you
I'm only happy when it rains

Pour your misery down (Pour your misery down)
Pour your misery down on me
Pour your misery down (Pour your misery down)
Pour your misery down on me
Pour your misery down (Pour your misery down)
Pour your misery down on me

    Pour your misery down
    You can keep me company
As long as you don't care

I'm only happy when it rains
You wanna hear about my new obsession?
I'm riding high upon a deep depression
I'm only happy when it rains

Pour some misery down on me
I'm only happy when it rains
Pour some misery down on me
I'm only happy when it rains
Pour some misery down on me
I'm only happy when it rains
Pour some misery down on me

I'm only happy when it rains
Pour some misery down on me
Pour some misery down on me
Pour some misery down on me
Pour some misery down on me

Pour some misery down on me
Pour some misery down on me

Only Happy When It Rains Song Chart
  • This is about enjoying being depressed, similar to a Country song by Patty Loveless which features the lyric, "You Can Feel Bad If It Makes You Feel Better." When the members of Garbage met for the first time, they found that they shared a love for dark music.
  • In a 1995 interview with Addicted to Noise, Steve Marker, the band's guitarist, said, "It's really just us poking fun of ourselves... We're poking fun at the alternatrock angst, wearing your heart on your sleeve thing and at ourselves for writing such dark songs." This is a similar sentiment to the sarcasm behind The Smith's 1984 single "Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now."
  • Singer Shirley Manson is from Scotland, where it rains frequently. She thinks of the song as an example of the Scots' self-deprecating humor.
  • This song was written somewhat spur-of-the-moment when the band was sitting around playing acoustic guitars. It started with the line, "I'm only happy when it rains," and was built around the opening lyric.
  • Garbage drummer Butch Vig sees this song as "an homage to The Jesus And Mary Chain."
