Same Girl

Jennifer Lopez wrote this paean to her roots with Chris Brown. It finds the Bronx-raised singer telling us that she hasn't changed since her days in Castle Hill - she's still real and remains the same Jenny from the block.

The song was produced by Cory Rooney, who has helmed several of Lopez's hit tunes including her aforementioned "Jenny From The Block" and "Play." He worked on this track in collaboration with Bronx producers Amadeus, YaBoy Chizzy and Ryan M Tedder.

The video was shot in Lopez's old neighborhood in the Bronx on December 28, 2013 and directed by Steven Gomillion and Dennis Leupold. "I had this idea like, oh, when I do the video for ["Same Girl"], if I ever do a video for this, I'm gonna go back to my old neighborhood in the Bronx," she explained on The Tonight Show. "I'm gonna go back to Castle Hill, I'm gonna get on the train from Manhattan, I'm just gonna film the whole thing. So we did!"

"We did it very guerrilla style," Lopez added. "You know it was just me and the camera and it turned out pretty cool."

Lopez invited locals to cameo in the clip. "They all started kind of gathering around and we're like, 'Do you wanna be in the video?'" she recalled. "They're like 'Yeah!' and I was like, 'OK c'mon, sing this!'"

This was one of several songs that Lopez worked on with Chris Brown for her A.K.A. album. Asked by Pop Crush how she thought his style affected the sound of those tracks, Lopez replied: "He knew he was writing for me, but at the same time it was very organic to what he does. But when you hear the songs, I don't think you would think, like, 'Oh, he wrote 'Same Girl.' He wrote 'Emotions.'' There's very different things that he did for me on the album."

I Luh Ya Papi

This upbeat, summery track finds Lopez expressing her "luh" for her beau. Released as the third single from the singer's eighth album, the track got its first play during Lopez's trip to Power 106's New at 2 show with Yesi Ortiz on March 5, 2014.

Lopez enlisted fellow Bronx native French Montana, who jumps in at the end reciprocating the feelings for his true love. Speaking to Yesi Ortiz of her decision to have French Montana feature, the American-Puerto Rican singer said, "We're both from New York, and we both have similar backgrounds, and I wanted this record to have that vibe and he was just perfect for it so I was so happy when he heard this record and wanted to be a part of it."

The track was produced by Noel "Detail" Fisher, whose other credits include Lil Wayne's "How To Love," Beyoncé's "Drunk In Love" and Wiz Khalifa's "We Dem Boyz."

The music video was directed by Jessy Terrero in Miami, Florida. It is a comic clip where we see Lopez turning the tables on countless videos where men are objectifying women. She told Pop Crush : "It's funny, when I was doing the song, I felt like it was very tongue-in-cheek. I'm saying in the verses how I'm gonna put it down on you and how I want you and all this stuff, but then it's kind of like what guys do to girls. So in the song it's like, you know, they'll be with you and they'll talk about how much they want you, and then it'll be like … oh yeah, I didn't see it. I really love you. It's kind of that type of thing."

"And then [with] the video, we decided to do the same thing," Lopez continued. "The director came up with the concept to kind of flip the rap video — to make me the rapper and, you know, just turn the tables in that way... instead of having girls in bathing suits, have guys in bathing suits. Instead of having me be the soft girl in the video, be the rapper who's in the mansion and the yacht. It was all meant to be in good fun, but you know, I knew people would get the joke."

Lopez released a remix by DJ Khaled on April 21, 2014, featuring the original verse from French Montana, Big Sean's verse from the first remix, plus a new verse from Tyga.

The song was originally earmarked to be Tinashe's debut single. She recalled to The Fader: "It wasn't 'Papi' at first, it was 'I Luh You Nigga,' like, I luh ya luh ya luh ya nigga. They switched the swag up a little bit! It was intended for Aquarius and everything."

"Then Detail was in a session with J. Lo and he played her the track," Tinashe continued, "because you know these producers sometimes, they're like 'Yo, lemme play you my hot s--t!' I guess she obviously really liked it, and she cut her version.

"One day Detail calls me and is like 'B-T-dubs, J. Lo is singing that song.' I didn't believe it at first, I thought he was just not trying to give it to me for some reason," she added. "I was like 'J. Lo does not want that song, she's not gonna sing that.' And then it came out. I guess she wanted it."

Tinashe recorded "2 On" instead as her debut single, which peaked at #24 on the Hot 100. Lopez, meanwhile stalled at #77 with "Papi". "I wasn't tripping on it too much. I really roll with the punches," Tinashe said. "A lot of things happen for a reason. Timing always is perfect, even when you don't think it is. I clearly wasn't meant to have that song. Who knows, '2 On' might not have existed if I had it."

First Love

This upbeat, bass-heavy cut finds Jennifer Lopez paying tribute to her beau:

Many of J-Lo's fans suspect the lyrics are directed to her former backup dancer Casper Smart, whom she had been in a relationship with since October 2011. The pair split shortly after the single's release.

The song was produced and co-written by Swedish hitmaker Max Martin, who previously created such hit tunes as "…Baby One More Time," "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together" and "Roar." "Max Martin [is a] genius, man," Lopez said during a listening party, "He's a super producer, maker of great pop hits. I've always wanted to work with him but our paths [hadn't] crossed. I sought him out."

The song was also co-written by Cory Rooney, the co-writer and co-producer of Lopez' #1 hits "Ain't It Funny," "I'm Real" and "If You Had My Love."

Lopez told Billboard magazine the story of the song. "We - Max Martin, Cory Rooney, me, everyone - were all talking about relationships, what they're like, how hard work they are, and how it could have been so much simpler if 'the one' was the first one," she recalled. "We talked about it and he (Martin) came back and said, 'I have the song!'"

"I remember I was working on Idol and Max and Cory came on to the set and said, 'You have to hear this! It came out of what we were talking about.' He went in and did it the next day," Lopez continued.

"Those are the best songs for me, the songs that capture an emotion in a couple of words. It's one of the best love songs that I've heard in a long time, for me. The music takes the words to another level."

The song's music video was directed by Anthony Mandler, the man behind most of Rihanna's video catalog as well as the likes of Justin Bieber, Jay-Z and Beyonce. The visual features Lopez in the Mojave desert searching for her true love. The singer told People magazine that she relied on Mandler's insight throughout the project, even convincing her to film the video in black and white. "We talked a lot about whether we would do a little bit of color or pops of color," Lopez recalled. "But Anthony felt strongly that it be all in black and white."

British model David Gandy played Lopez' love interest in the video. "I've been asked if I'd take part in music videos before and I've always said no, but I jumped at the chance of working with a music icon such as Jennifer," Gandy told Vogue.

The model added that the conditions in the desert made filming a challenge. "The conditions to shoot in were very challenging due to the weather," Gandy said, "we were in the desert outside LA and the winds were incredibly strong and we had to deal with plummeting temperatures and sand storms - but the atmosphere on set was great and we all had a lot of fun."

Ain't It Funny

This was co-written by Jennifer Lopez and Cory Rooney for the 2001 Adam Shankman-directed romantic comedy The Wedding Planner. Cory Rooney recalled to Songwriter Universe : "Jennifer and I were in Canada, and we wanted to write a song [which was originally intended] for her movie, The Wedding Planner. The music popped in my head, and I went home and worked on the track. Then I sat with Jennifer and we banged out the song."

"Tommy (Mottola) was even involved with writing the song," Rooney added. "He was so enthusiastic about the track, that he contributed melody ideas to the song."

Adam Shankman felt that the song had too much of a Latin influence to be featured in The Wedding Singer. However, the song was included on Lopez's second studio album J.Lo. Released as its third single on June 20, 2001, it was a commercial success, peaking within the top ten in multiple countries, though it didn't originally chart on the Hot 100.

Sales of the song were boosted by a remix by Irv Gotti and 7 with additional vocals from Ja Rule and Caddillac Tah. The remix peaked at #1 on the Hot 100 and Airplay for the week ending March 9, 2002 giving Lopez her third chart-topper following "If You Had My Love" and "I'm Real."

R&B singer-songwriter Ashanti Douglas wrote several verses for the remix and also supplied background vocals. During April 2002, Ashanti had a hand in the top three singles in the United States. This song, "What's Luv?" by Fat Joe featuring Ashanti, and her own solo hit "Foolish."

This song has an all-star pedigree. The bouncy tune was written by Chris Brown and Diplo and it features Lopez' fellow Hispanic Pop star and frequent collaborator Pitbull ("Fresh Out the Oven," "On The Floor," "Live It Up," "Dance Again" and "We Are One (Ole Ola)").

Lopez has always been known for her curves, but was initially shy about recording this floor filler that celebrates her infamous backside. However, the star was won over by her six-year-old twins Max and Emme.

"At first I said 'Never in my life will I do a song called Big Booty,'" she explained during an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live. "But then I was in the car with my twins and as soon as they heard Big Booty they went crazy. They loved this song and because of that I recorded it."

Lopez explained the song's meaning on Hot 97's The Angie Martinez Show. "'Big Booty' is a song I did with Diplo," she said. "It's a fun song and it's about owning everything about you and who you are and embracing that."

The song finds Lopez poking fun at her celebrated rear. "I've always strayed from embracing all these different parts of myself as a person and as an artist, but this time I was like, 'I am all these different things,'" she told Billboard magazine. "I can be silly, I can make fun of myself, but I can also be deathly serious and way too deep and introspective sometimes. I think people have so many more sides to themselves than just one. We're much more colorful than that."

Jennifer Lopez teamed up with Iggy Azalea for the remix, which finds the Australian rapper shouting out one of J-Lo's old hits. "The last time the world seen a booty this good was on 'Jenny From The Block,'" she spits. "I want to tell all my ladies to get up on the floor and shake it, shake it!"

Pitbull's verse was completely replaced by Iggy's on this new version.

The music video was shot on August 23, 2014 and directed by Hype Williams. It features plenty of booty twerking from Lopez and Azelea as well as a number of cheek-to-cheek moments from the pair. Azalea admitted to Access Hollywood she didn't realize how raunchy the clip would be.

"I didn't know how much booty it would be because I was in the little box with JLo," she said about the confined space they filmed in. "And then I left her to her own devices. She really got things kind of like fired up when I was gone with her dancing and stuff. I think it took it to another level, but I enjoyed it."

Jenny From The Block

This is about how Jennifer grew up in the Bronx and wants people to know she is still real and despite her fame is still the same person she always was. Lopez is so fixated with her hometown in this song that she references the Bronx 28 times.

Shortly after this was released, Fox News did a story about the tensions between Lopez and her old neighbors in the Bronx. The anchor, Shepard Smith, read the following on air: "J.Lo's new song 'Jenny From the Block' is all about Lopez's roots, about how she's still a neighborhood gal at heart, but folks from that street in New York, the Bronx section, sound more likely to give her a curb job than a blow job!" Smith was supposed to say "Block Party," and tried to make the correction, but it was too late. Smith apologized and said, "I have no idea how that happened, but it won't happen again." Our guess is that someone got into the computer system and changed the script. Many news anchors simply read what is in front of them on the TelePromptTer.

Lopez starred in the movie Maid In Manhattan when this song was popular. In the movie, Lopez played a maid who falls in love with a wealthy man who does not know she is poor. The sentiment of the movie is similar to this song, as Lopez stays true to her old friends despite a change in social status.

In addition to her movie, Lopez also released her own line of perfume around the time this was released. It was called "Glow by J.Lo."

This features guest vocals by rappers Jadakiss and Styles. Styles began serving an 8 month jail sentence for assault shortly after shooting the video.

Love Don't Cost A Thing Song Chart

Lopez set up an internet camera on her website where fans could watch her make this album. The album was her transformation from Jennifer Lopez to "J-Lo."

Lopez appeared in the movie The Wedding Planner a few months after this was released. This song plays over the closing credits.

Jennifer performed this on CBS before Super Bowl XXXV as part of the pregame coverage.

After breaking up with Puff Daddy (as he was then known) in 2001, Lopez dated a dancer named Chris Judd, who she met while shooting the video for this. They married later that year but divorced in 2002.
