Experiment IV Lyrics

We were working secretly for the military
Our experiment in sound was nearly ready to begin
We only know in theory what we are doing
Music made for pleasure, music made to thrill
It was music we were making here until
They told us all they wanted
Was a sound that could kill someone from a distance
So we go ahead and the meters are over in the red
It's a mistake in the making

From the painful cries of mothers to a terrifying scream
We recorded it and put it into our machine

They told us all they wanted
Was a sound that could kill someone from a distance
So we go ahead and the meters are over in the red
It's a mistake in the making

It could feel like falling in love
It could feel so bad
It could feel so good
It could sing you to sleep
But that dream is your enemy!!

We won't be there to be blamed
We won't be there to snitch
I just pray that someone there can hit the switch

They told us all they wanted
Was a sound that could kill someone from a distance
So we go ahead and the meters are over in the red
It's a mistake in the making

And the public are warned to stay off

Experiment IV
  • This song is about how sometimes scientists get so caught up in the pure science of what they are developing that they don't realize what purpose others may have for it. For example, when scientists started splitting atoms they probably did not think of the possible future applications as weapons.
  • The origin of this song came from Kate's consideration of music as such a beautiful thing and a positive force. The idea of something so beautiful being used to kill people was fascinating. There likely are sonic experiments of a similar type actually being carried out by militaries somewhere.
  • The Whole Story is a greatest hits album. This was the only new song included with songs from previous albums.

    Babooshka Lyrics

She wanted to test her husband
She knew exactly what to do
    A pseudonym to fool him
She couldn't have made a worse move

    She sent him scented letters,
And he received them with a strange delight.
    Just like his wife
But how she was before the tears,
And how she was before the years flew by,
And how she was when she was beautiful.
    She signed the letter

    "All yours,
    Babooshka, Babooshka, Babooshka-ya-ya!
    All yours,
    Babooshka, Babooshka, Babooshka-ya-ya!"

She wanted to take it further,
So she arranged a place to go,
    To see if he
    Would fall for her incognito.
And when he laid eyes on her,
He got the feeling they had met before.
    Uncanny how she
Reminds him of his little lady,
Capacity to give him all he needs,
Just like his wife before she freezed on him,
Just like his wife when she was beautiful.
    He shouted out, "I'm

    All yours,
    Babooshka, Babooshka, Babooshka-ya-ya!
    All yours,
    Babooshka, Babooshka, Babooshka-ya-ya!
    All yours,
    Babooshka, Babooshka, Babooshka-ya-ya!"

    Babooshka
  • This is about futile situations and how we often ruin things for ourselves. In the song, a man is tested by his wife when she starts sending anonymous scented letters. Seeing his reaction, she takes it further by arranging a meeting with her in disguise. Not knowing it is his own wife, he is reminded of his wife when she was younger and more amorous.
  • The word "Babooshka" is Russian for grandmother. It's also the name of a type of headdress. The title was chosen through a series of coincidences: Kate turned on the TV and someone was singing about Babooshka; looking through a magazine she came across an opera titled Babooshka, and a friend had a cat named Babooshka.
  • They went through a lot of boxes of broken crockery to get the right sound at the end of the song.
  • This reached #1 in Australia, #3 in France, and cracked the Top 10 in Canada and Ireland.

    Hammer Horror Lyrics

    You stood in the belltower,
    But now you're gone.
So who knows all the sights
    Of Notre Dame?

They've got the stars for the gallant hearts.
I'm the replacement for your part.
But all I want to do is forget
    You, friend.

    Hammer Horror, Hammer Horror,
    Won't leave me alone.
The first time in my life,
    I leave the lights on
    To ease my soul.
    Hammer Horror, Hammer Horror,
    Won't leave it alone.
    I don't know,
Is this the right thing to do?

    Rehearsing in your things,
    I feel guilty.
    And retracing all the scenes,
    Of your big hit,
Oh, God, you needed the leading role.
It wasn't me who made you go, though.
Now all I want to do is forget
    You, friend.

    Hammer Horror, Hammer Horror,
    Won't leave me alone.
The first time in my life,
    I leave the lights on
    To ease my soul.
    Hammer Horror, Hammer Horror,
    Won't leave it alone.
    I don't know,
Is this the right thing to do?

Who calls me from the other side
    Of the street?
And who taps me on the shoulder?
I turn around, but you're gone.

    Hammer Horror
  • The song is about two actors who are friends. One is playing the lead role in a production of The Hunchback of Notre Dame, a part he's read all of his life and has been waiting for a chance to play. After many rehearsals he accidentally dies and his friend is asked to take over the role, which he does because his own career is on the line. The dead man comes back to haunt him because he doesn't want him to have the role, believing that he is taking away the only chance he ever had in life. The actor is saying, "Leave me alone, it's not my fault. I have to take this role but I'm not sure if it's the right thing to do because the ghost won't leave me alone and is really freaking me out. I see him at every corner."
  • This was inspired by James Cagney playing the role of Lon Chaney as the hunchback-he was an actor in an actor in an actor, rather like Chinese boxes, and that was what Kate was trying to create.

    Moving Lyrics

Moving stranger does it really matter?
As long as you're not afraid to feel
Touch me, hold me, how my open arms ache
    Try to fall for me

How I'm moved, how you move me
    With your beauty's potency
You give me life, please don't let me go
You crush the lily in my soul

Moving liquid, yes, you are just as water
You flow around all that comes in your way
Don't think it over, it always takes you over
    And sets your spirit dancing

How I'm moved, how you move me
    With your beauty's potency
You give me life, please don't let me go (please don't let me go)
You give me life, please don't let me go (please don't let me go)

  • Bush wrote this song for her dance teacher Lindsay Kemp. It's about how a person discovers free expression.
  • The inspiration for this song came also from whales. Kate thought that they were graceful and sang beautifully. Whale song is heard at the opening of the track.
  • While "Wuthering Heights" was the first single from Bush's debut album in the UK and most of the world, this song was the first released in Japan and reached #1 in that country. Oddly enough,it did not chart anywhere else.

    'Bang!' goes another kanga

"See the light ram through the gaps in the land."
Many an Aborigine's mistaken for a tree
'Til you near him on the motorway

    The Dreaming
  • Bush wrote this about the situation between the white Australians and the aborigines who were being wiped out by man's greed for uranium. White men were digging up aboriginal sacred grounds to get to the plutonium needed to build weapons that could one day destroy everything.
  • The title comes from a religious period of time in the aboriginal culture known as Dreamtime, a time when animals and humans take the same form. Dreamtime is also known as The Dreaming.
  • Traditional aboriginal instruments were used on this song.
  • The Dreaming was Bush's first completely solo produced album.

    Sat In Your Lap Lyrics

    I see the people working,
And see it working for them.
And so I want to join in,
But then I find it hurts me.

Some say that knowledge is something Sat In Your Lap.
Some say that knowledge is something that you never have.

    I see the people happy,
So can it happen for me?
    'Cause when I am unhappy,
There's nothing that can move me.

Some say that knowledge is something that you never have.
Some say that knowledge is something sat in your lap.
Some say that heaven is hell.
Some say that hell is heaven.

I must admit, just when I think I'm king,
    (I just begin.)
Just when I think I'm king, I must admit,
    (I just begin.)
Just when I think I'm king,
    (I just begin.)

I've been doing it for years.
    My goal is moving near.
It says, "Look! I'm over here."
    Then it up and disappears.

Some say that knowledge is something sat in your lap.
Some say that knowledge is ho-ho-ho-ho.

I want to be a lawyer.
I want to be a scholar.
But I really can't be bothered.
Ooh, just gimme it quick, gimme it, gimme gimme gimme gimme!

Some say that knowledge is ho ho ho.
Some say that knowledge is ho ho ho.
Some say that heaven is hell.
Some say that hell is heaven.

I must admit, just when I think I'm king,
    (I just begin.)
Just when I think I'm king, I must admit,
    (I just begin.)
Just when I think everything's going great,
    (I just begin,)
    Hey, I get the break,
Hey, I'm gonna take it all--
    (I just begin.)
    When I'm king--
    (-- just begin.)

    In my dome of ivory,
    A home of activity,
    I want the answers quickly,
But I don't have no energy.

I hold a cup of wisdom,
    But there is nothing within.
    My cup, she never overfloweth,
And 'tis I that moan- and groaneth.

    Some grey and white matter,
    "Give me the karma, mama!"
    I'm coming up the ladder,
    "A jet to Mecca,"
    I'm coming up the ladder,
    "Tibet or Jeddah,
    Up the ladder...
    "To Salisbury,
    A monastery,
    The longest journey,
    Across the desert,
    Across the weather,
    Across the elements,
    Across the water!"

    Sat In Your Lap
  • This song is about the kind of people who want to have knowledge but can't be bothered to do the things they should in order to get it. It implies that the more you know, the more ignorant you realize you are; when you get over one wall, you will find an even bigger one.
  • The Dreaming was Bush's first album as a solo producer, allowing her to experiment musically in areas that were new to her.
  • The video for this song was intentionally made to be comical rather than serious. It contained images indicating lack of knowledge such as dunces and jesters.

I've pulled down my lace and the chintz.
Oh, do you know you have the face of a genius?
I'll send your love to Zeus.
Oh, by the time you read this,
    I'll be well in touch.

I'm giving it all in a moment or two.
I'm giving it all in a moment, for you.
I'm giving it all, giving it, giving it.
    This kicking here inside
    Makes me leave you behind.
    No more under the quilt
    To keep you warm.
    Your sister I was born.
You must lose me like an arrow,
    Shot into the killer storm.

You and me on the bobbing knee.
Didn't we cry at that old mythology he'd read!
I will come home again, but not until
The sun and the moon meet on yon hill.

I'm giving it all in a moment or two.
I'm giving it all in a moment, for you.
I'm giving it all, giving it, giving it.

    The Kick Inside
  • This is about a brother and sister who fall desperately in love with each other. When she becomes pregnant by her own brother, she commits suicide. The song itself is the suicide note. She does not want her brother to be hurt or her family to go through the unspeakable shame of incest. The note (or song) is telling her brother not to feel responsible for her death: "I'm giving it all in a moment or two, giving it all in a moment for you. This kicking here inside, makes me leave you behind. No more under the quilt to keep you warm. Your sister I was born, you must lose me like an arrow shot into the killer storm."
  • This song was inspired by an old traditional English-Scottish song titled "Lucy Wan."
  • Some were surprised at the 19-year-old, convent-schooled Kate Bush writing a song with the controversial topic of brother-sister incest. She told Q magazine's Phil Sutcliffe that keeping constant faith with the characters that she'd created was important, and she didn't judge them.

    'Cause you're all grown-up now."
Just like a photograph I pick you up

Just like a feeling that you're sending out

But I can't let you go
    If I let you go
    You slip into The Fog

This love was big enough for the both of us.
    This love of yours,
Was big enough to be frightened of

I'll let go of you gently

  • Featuring classical violinist Nigel Kennedy and some seagull imitations, this song is about trying to grow up. "Growing up for most people is just trying to stop escaping, looking at things inside yourself rather than outside," Bush told NME. "But I'm not sure if people ever grow up properly, it's a continual process, growing in a positive sense."
  • Kate's physician father contributed the spoken word dialogue. Doctor Bush is also an accomplished pianist.

    Rocket's Tail Lyrics

That Novenber night, looking up into the sky.
You said "Hey wish that was me up there
It's the biggest rocket I could find
And it's holding the night in its arms
    If for only a moment.
I can't see the look in its eyes
But I'm sure it must be laughing."
But it seemed to me the saddest thing I'd ever seen
And I thought you were crazy wishing such a thing.

I saw only a stick on fire
    Alone on its journey
    Home to the quickening ground
With no one there to catch it.

I put on my pointed hat
And my black and silver suit
And I check my gunpowder pack
And I strap the stick on my back
And dressed as a rocket on Waterloo Bridge
    Nobody seemed to see me
Then with the fuse in my hand
And now shooting into the night
    And still as a rocket
    I land in the river.

Was it me said you were crazy?
I put on my cloudiest suit
    Size 5 lightening boots too
    'Coz I am a rocket
    On fire
Look at me go with my tail on fire
    With my tail on fire
    On fire
Hey, look at me go, look at me

"Rocket's actually my cat, but it was written for the Bulgarian girls," Bush explained to NME. "Ridiculous collection of images, nothing to do with Rocket really, he just started it all off. At the time the only song I could think of that mentioned rockets was 'Rocket Man' but since then there has been about three of them. I feel a bit like the Python sketch with that guy making eight-millimetre films saying 'Hitchcock had his Rear Window out while mine was still at the chemists'."

Bush actually recorded "Rocket Man" a couple of years later for the tribute album Two Rooms: Celebrating the Songs of Elton John & Bernie Taupin. Her reggae-inflected cover was a commercial success, peaking at #12 on the UK singles chart. In 2007 it won The Observer readers' award for Greatest Cover of all time.
  • The song features guitar by Bush's early music mentor, Pink Floyd's Dave Gilmour.

    This Woman's Work Lyrics

    Pray God you can cope.
I stand outside This Woman's Work,
    This woman's world.
Ooh, it's hard on the man,
    Now his part is over.
Now starts the craft of the father.

I know you've got a little life in you yet.
I know you've got a lot of strength left.
I know you've got a little life in you yet.
I know you've got a lot of strength left.

I should be crying, but I just can't let it go.
I should be hoping, but I can't stop thinking

Of all the things I should've said,
    That I never said.
All the things we should've done,
    Though we never did.
All the things I should've given,
    But I didn't.

    Oh, darling, make it go,
    Make it go away.

    Give me these moments back.
    Give them back to me.
    Give me that little kiss.
    Give me your hand.

(I know you have a little life in you yet.
I know you have a lot of strength left.
I know you have a little life in you yet.
I know you have a lot of strength left.)

I should be crying, but I just can't let it go
I should be hoping, but I can't stop thinking

Of all the things we should've said,
    That we never said.
All the things we should've done,
    Though we never did.
All the things that you needed from me.
All the things that you wanted for me.
All the things that I should've given,
    But I didn't.

Oh, darling, make it go away.
Just make it go away now.

    This Woman's Work
  • Bush wrote this for a sequence in the movie She's Having A Baby where a man is waiting helplessly in a hospital while his wife gives birth in the next room. She wrote it from the man's point of view.
  • A cover by the R&B American artist Maxwell was released as a single in 2001, peaking at #56 on the Hot 100.
  • Bush told the NME: "It was written for John Hughes' film She's Having A Baby. Really light comedy about this young guy who gets married, very much a kid. His wife is pregnant and it's alright until they get to the hospital and the baby's in the breach position.

That's the sequence I have to write the songs about and it's really very moving, him in the waiting room, having flashbacks of his wife and him going for walks, decoration... It's exploring his sadness and guilt, suddenly it's the point where he has to grow up. He'd been such a wally up to this point."
  • Bush re-recorded the song for her 2011 album, Director's Cut, in which she updated a selection of tracks from The Sensual World and The Red Shoes.
  • The song returned to the UK singles chart at #63 in April 2012 after contestant Hope Murphy performed it on Britain's Got Talent. Maxwell's cover also entered the top 75 for the first time when it reached #41 the same week.

Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God) Lyrics

    It doesn't hurt me
Do you wanna feel how it feels?
Do you wanna know, know that it doesn't hurt me?
Do you wanna hear about the deal that I'm making?
    You
    It's you and me

    And if I only could
I'd make a deal with God
And I'd get him to swap our places
    Be running up that road
    Be running up that hill
    Be running up that building
See if I only could, oh

    You don't wanna hurt me
But see how deep the bullet lies
    Unaware I'm tearing you asunder
Oh, there is thunder in our hearts

Is there so much hate for the ones we love?
Well tell me, we both matter, don't we?
    You
    It's you and me
It's you and me won't be unhappy

    And if I only could
I'd make a deal with God
And I'd get him to swap our places
    Be running up that road
    Be running up that hill
    Be running up that building
Say, if I only could, oh

    You
    It's you and me
It's you and me won't be unhappy

    Oh c'mon, baby, c'mon darling
Let me steal this moment from you now.
    C'mon, angel, c'mon, c'mon, darling
    Let's exchange the experience, oh

    And if I only could
I'd make a deal with God
And I'd get him to swap our places
I'd be running up that road
    Be running up that hill
    With no problems

See and if I only could
I'd make a deal with God
And I'd get him to swap our places
    Be running up that road
    Be running up that hill
    With no problems

    So if I only could
I'd make a deal with God
And I'd get him to swap our places
I'd be running up that road
    Be running up that hill
    With no problems

    So if I only could
    Be running up that hill
    With no problems

If I only could, I'd be running up that hill
If I only could, I'd be running up that hill

Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God)
  • This song is about making a deal with God to swap lives with another person.
  • Bush wrote this with the title "Deal With God." Her label made her change it because they didn't think radio stations would play a song with "God" in the title. Bush still regrets letting them rename her song, but her previous album didn't do very well and she wanted to make sure this got airplay.
  • Bush's record company wanted to release "Cloudbusting" as the first single, but Kate convinced them to release this instead. Since they had already renamed her song, it was considered a compromise.
  • This was Bush's biggest hit in the US. She is very popular in the UK, but remains mostly unknown in America.
  • A version by British band Placebo was recorded for their 2007 Covers album. It entered the UK singles chart in January 2010 as a result of its use in the theatrical trailer for the feature film Daybreakers.
  • A new version of the song, subtitled '2012 Remix', reached the top 10 of the UK singles chart in August 2012. The track was transposed down a semitone to fit Bush's current lower vocal range and was premiered during the 2012 London Olympics closing ceremony. Bush did not appear in person, but the recording was featured in a crucial section after the entry of athletes.

    Wuthering Heights Lyrics

Out on the wiley, windy moors
We'd roll and fall in green.
You had a temper like my jealousy:
    Too hot, too greedy.
    How could you leave me,
When I needed to possess you?
I hated you. I loved you, too.

    Bad dreams in the night.
They told me I was going to lose the fight,
    Leave behind my wuthering, wuthering
    Wuthering Heights.

    Heathcliff, it's me--Cathy.
    Come home. I'm so cold!
    Let me in-a-your window.

    Heathcliff, it's me--Cathy.
    Come home. I'm so cold!
    Let me in-a-your window.

Ooh, it gets dark! It gets lonely,
On the other side from you.
I pine a lot. I find the lot
    Falls through without you.
    I'm coming back, love.
    Cruel Heathcliff, my one dream,
    My only master.

Too long I roam in the night.
I'm coming back to his side, to put it right.
I'm coming home to wuthering, wuthering,
    Wuthering Heights,

    Heathcliff, it's me--Cathy.
    Come home. I'm so cold!
    Let me in-a-your window.

    Heathcliff, it's me--Cathy.
    Come home. I'm so cold!
    Let me in-a-your window.

    Ooh! Let me have it.
Let me grab your soul away.
    Ooh! Let me have it.
Let me grab your soul away.
    You know it's me--Cathy!

    Heathcliff, it's me--Cathy.
    Come home. I'm so cold!
    Let me in-a-your window.

    Heathcliff, it's me--Cathy.
    Come home. I'm so cold!

    Wuthering Heights
  • This is based on Emily Bronte's classic book of the same name. The song pretty much tells the same story as the book, only at a much higher pitch.

In the book, two young people, Catherine and Heathcliff, are brought together and become lovers. Along the way, they struggle with issues of class and family. Wuthering Heights was Bronte's only novel, although she did publish some poems.
  • This was the first song Bush recorded for a label. It was released as a single, and while the music press dismissed the song as a novelty, it hit #1 in Britain. It stayed there for four weeks and launched her career at age 19.
  • Kate Bush and Emily Bronte share the same birthday, July 30th.
  • Kate started playing piano at age 11 and wrote her first song at 13. By the time she recorded the album, she had about 50 songs to choose from, but this wasn't one of them. She came up with it shortly before recording the album. She claims she wrote the song in one night under a full moon.
  • This was a huge hit everywhere except the US. This is the way it remained for Bush, who has never been able to break the US market.
  • Bush's label, EMI, wanted to release "James and the Cold Gun" as her first single, believing that radio stations wouldn't play this because it sounded too odd. When Kate found out, she insisted that "Wuthering Heights" be released first, but as a 19-year-old who had never released a song, she didn't have much say in the matter. Her label boss decided to let her have her way, figuring the song would flop and he would prove to Bush that he knew how to do his job better than she did. He was proven horribly wrong, and Bush was allowed to select her next single. Her choice was "The Man With The Child In His Eyes."
  • When this rose to #1 Kate Bush became the first female to top the UK charts with a self composed song.
  • Pat Benatar covered this on her 1980 album Crimes of Passion.
  • The guitar solo is by Ian Bairnson, formerly of Pilot. In the mid-'70s, they had a #5 hit in the US with "Magic" and a chart topper in the UK with "January."
  • Engineer Jon Kelly recalled Kate Bush's recording of the song in the book Classic Tracks: The Real Stories Behind 68 Seminal Recordings by Richard Buskin. "In the case of 'Wuthering Heights' she was imitating this witch, the mad lady from the Yorkshire Moors, and she was very theatrical about it.," he recalled. "She was such a mesmerising performer – she threw her heart and soul into everything she did – that it was difficult to ever fault her or say, 'You could do better.'"

"You couldn't keep Kate away from the sessions even if you had wild dogs and bazookas," Kelly added. "She was just drinking it all up, learning everything that went on. The first moment she walked into the control room, I could tell that's where she wanted to be; in control of her own records. She was astute, and she was also phenomenally easy to work with."
  • Bush re-recorded her vocal late one night, doing two or three takes from which producer Andrew Powell chose the best. "There was no compiling," Kelly confirmed. "It was a complete performance. We started the mix at around midnight and Kate was there the whole time, encouraging us. You couldn't deny her anything. So we got on with the job and finished at about five or six that morning."

    Pull Out the Pin Lyrics

Just as we hit the green,
I've never been so happy to be alive.
    Only seven miles behind
    You could smell the child,
The smell of the front line's survival.

    With my silver Buddha
    And my silver bullet,
    (I pull the pin.)

You learn to ride the Earth,
When you're living on your belly and the enemy are city-births.
Who need radar? We use scent.
They stink of the west, stink of sweat.
Stink of cologne and baccy, and all their Yankee hash.

    With my silver Buddha
    And my silver bullet,
    (I'm pulling on the pin,)
Ooh, I pull out, Pull Out the Pin.
    (pulling on the pin, oh)

    [Chorus]
    Just one thing in it
    Me or him.
    Just one thing in it
    Me or him.
    And I love life!
    Just one thing in it
    Me or him.
    And I love life!
    I love life!
    I love life!

I've seen the coat for me.
I'll track him 'til he drops,
Then I'll pop him one he won't see.
He's big and pink, and not like me.
    He sees no light.
He sees no reason for the fighting

    With my silver Buddha
    And my silver bullet.
    (I'm pulling on the pin,)
Ooh, I pull out, pull out the pin.
    (pulling on the pin, oh)

I had not seen his face,
    'til I'm only feet away
    Unbeknown to my prey.
    I look in American eyes.
    I see little life,
    See little wife.
He's striking violence up in me.

    With my silver Buddha
    And my silver bullet.

    [Chorus: x2]

  • This track was inspired by a TV documentary Bush saw about the Vietnam war, which viewed the conflict from a Viet Cong perspective. She recalled to Keyboard (July 1985): "There was this fantastic TV documentary about a cameraman who was on the front lines. He was a brilliant cameraman and he was so well-trained a technician that he kept filming things no matter how he was feeling about it at the time. Some of the stuff he was shooting was really disturbing. Some of these Vietnamese guys would just come in and they were sort of dying in mid-air. And he'd just keep on filming."
  • Bush's viewing of the documentary stimulated an act of sonic visualization in the studio. "We sat in front of the speakers trying to focus on the picture - a green forest, humid and pulsating with life," she recalled. "We are looking at the Americans from the Vietnamese point of view and almost like a camera we start in wide shot."

"Right in the distance you can see the trees moving, smoke and sounds drifting our way,... sounds like a radio," Bush continued. "Closer in with the camera and you can catch glimpses of their pink skin. We can smell them for miles with their sickly cologne, American tobacco and their stale sweat."
  • The song features backing vocals from Bush's mentor, Pink Floyd's Dave Gilmour.
