Pushing Me Away Lyrics

I've lied to you
The same way that I always do
This is the last smile
That I'll fake for the sake of being with you

Everything falls apart
Even the people who never frown eventually break down
The sacrifice of hiding in a lie
Everything has to end
You'll soon find we're out of time left to watch it all unwind)
The sacrifice is never knowing

Why I never walked away
Why I played myself this way
Now I see your testing me pushes me away
Why I never walked away
Why I played myself this way
Now I see your testing me pushes me away

I've tried like you
To do everything you wanted too
This is the last time
I'll take the blame for the sake of being with you

Everything falls apart
Even the people who never frown eventually break down
The sacrifice of hiding in a lie
Everything has to end
You'll soon find we're out of time left to watch it all unwind)
The sacrifice is never knowing

Why I never walked away
Why I played myself this way
Now I see your testing me pushes me away
Why I never walked away
Why I played myself this way
Now I see your testing me pushes me away

We're all out of time, this is how we find how it all unwinds
The sacrifice of hiding in a lie
We're all out of time, this is how we find how it all unwinds
The sacrifice is never knowing

Why I never walked away
Why I played myself this way
Now I see your testing me pushes me away
Why I never walked away
Why I played myself this way
Now I see your testing me pushes me away

Pushes me away

Pushing Me Away
  • This song is about a guy who only feels pain when he is with a girl who he used to love. He still loves her but something has happened that causes him pain when he is with her. In the Live In Texas version it says, "When I look into your eyes there's nothing left to see, nothing but my own mistakes staring back at me." This refers to how he can only see how much pain he has inflicted on someone he loves when he looks at her. He can't stand that feeling anymore.
  • In the remix of this song ("P5hng Me Aw*y"), he says, "When I look into your eyes, there's nothing there to see. Nothing but my own mistakes, staring back at me." This says he made a big mistake being with her. In her eyes he sees his reflection, but it's him as a miserable person.

    Nobody's Listening Lyrics

Come, come, come, coming at you,
    Come, coming at you,
    Come, coming at you,
Peep the style and the kids checking for it
    The number one question is
    How could you ignore it
We drop right back in the cut
    Over basement tracks
With raps that got you backing this up like (rewind that)
We're just rolling with the rhythm
Rise from the ashes of stylistic division
With these non-stop lyrics of life living
    Not to forgotten
    But still unforgiven
But in the meantime there are those who want to
Talk this and that, so I suppose
It gets to a point feelings gotta get hurt
And get dirty with the people spreading the dirt

    [Chorus]
    Try to give you warning
    But everyone ignores me
(Told you everything loud and clear)
    But Nobody's Listening
    Call to you so clearly
But you don't want to hear me
(Told you everything loud and clear)
    But nobody's listening

    I got a
Heart full of pain, head full of stress
Handful of anger, held in my chest
And everything's left is a waste of time
    I hate my rhymes
    (But hate everyone else's more)
I'm riding on the back of this pressure
    Guessing that it's better
    I can't keep myself together
    Because all of this stress
Gave me something to write on
    The pain gave me something
I could set my sights on
You never forget the blood, sweat, and tears
The uphill struggle over the years
    The fear and trash talking
And the people it was to
And the people that started it
    Just like you

    [Chorus]

    I got a
Heart full of pain, head full of stress
Handful of anger, held in my chest
Uphill struggle, blood, sweat, and tears
Nothing to gain, everything to fear

    (scratches)
Coming at you at every style

  • This is about the pain and stress one must go through when writing music.
  • Mike Shinoda was going through his record collection when he got the idea to use a Japanese flute on this called a shakuhachi. Chester Bennington decided they had to make the lyrics go along with the flute, which was played by an outside musician.

    My December Lyrics

    This is My December
This is my time of the year
    This is my December
    This is all so clear

    This is my December
This is my snow covered home
    This is my December
    This is me alone

    And I
Just wish that I didn't feel
Like there was something I missed
    And I
Take back all the things I said
To make you feel like that
    And I
Just wish that I didn't feel
Like there was something I missed
    And I
Take back all the things that I said to you

And I give it all away
Just to have somewhere to go to
    Give it all away
To have someone to come home to

    This is my December
These are my snow covered dreams
    This is me pretending
    This is all I need

    And I
Just wish that I didn't feel
Like there was something I missed
    And I
Take back all the things I said
To make you feel like that
    And I

    My December
  • The band wrote this in Nashville while they were on the road in 2000. The Song is basically about being away from the ones you care for.
  • Mike Shinoda wrote the Lyrics. (thanks, Kim - Long Valley, NJ)
  • The song is about a person (Chester in this case) who got in a fight with his girlfriend and left. It says this on Mike's part, "Just wish that it didn't feel like there was something I missed. Take back all the things I said to make you feel like that." Now "My December," which is the end of the year, represents the end for him. "This is my snow covered home" represents his new place, and "This is me pretending... this is all I need" says his new home isn't good enough, but he wants it to be. He wants his girlfriend back. With You Lyrics

I woke up in a dream today
To the cold of the static, and put my cold feet on the floor
    Forgot all about yesterday
Remembering I'm pretending to be where I'm not anymore
    A little taste of hypocrisy
And I'm left in the wake of the mistake, slow to react
Even though you're so close to me
You're still so distant, and I can't bring you back

    It's true
    The way I feel
    Was promised by your face
    The sound of your voice
    Painted on my memories
Even if you're not with me

    I'm With You
    You now I see
    Keeping everything inside (with you)
    You now I see
Even when I close my eyes

I hit you and you hit me back
We fall to the floor, the rest of the day stands still
Fine line between this and that
When things go wrong I pretend that the past isn't real
Now I'm trapped in this memory
And I'm left in the wake of the mistake, slow to react
So, even though you're close to me
You're still so distant, and I can't bring you back

    It's true
    The way I feel
    Was promised by your face
    The sound of your voice
    Painted on my memories
Even if you're not with me

    I'm with you
    You now I see
    Keeping everything inside (with you)
    You now I see
Even when I close my eyes

    I'm with you
    You now I see
    Keeping everything inside (with you)
    You now I see
Even when I close my eyes

No, no matter how far we've come
I can't wait to see tomorrow
No matter how far we've come
I can't wait to see tomorrow
    With you

    You now I see

    Crawling Lyrics

    Crawling in my skin
These wounds, they will not heal
    Fear is how I fall
    Confusing what is real

There's something inside me that pulls beneath the surface
    Consuming, confusing
This lack of self control I fear is never ending
    Controlling
    I can't seem
    To find myself again
    My walls are closing in
(Without a sense of confidence I'm convinced
That there's just too much pressure to take)
    I've felt this way before
    So insecure

    Crawling in my skin
These wounds, they will not heal
    Fear is how I fall
    Confusing what is real

Discomfort, endlessly has pulled itself upon me
    Distracting, reacting
Against my will I stand beside my own reflection
    It's haunting how I can't seem

    To find myself again
    My walls are closing in
(Without a sense of confidence I'm convinced
That there's just too much pressure to take)
    I've felt this way before
    So insecure

    Crawling in my skin
These wounds, they will not heal

    Crawling
  • In the video, the girl (Katelyn Rosaasen) is physically abused by her father. At the beginning, we can see all her bruises. Many of the lyrics demonstrate how hard it is to break the cycle of abuse ("These wounds, they will not heal" and "It's haunting, how I can't seem to find myself again, my walls are closing in"), and how self-confidence is crushed. The blue crystal background closes in on her at the beginning of the first chorus - this shows an emotional shell that she has built around her. The thick make-up is like a mask, trying to hide what's going on inside. The septum ring is designed to link with Chester's lip ring. When the girl walks away from her boyfriend, it's because she's too scared to get close to people. This is also true for the high school bathroom scene. When Chester sings, "Against my will I stand beside my own reflection," he and Katelyn are looking at each other. She looks like she wants to get out of the shell she's in. She also sees painful memories from her past in the crystal. When the second chorus starts, the crystal begins to break and chunks of it are flying about - this is her shell falling down. It represents her father's departure, as does her smiling at the end with the roses in the vase. She's not wearing the thick make-up because she doesn't feel like she needs the protection of a mask - she's got nothing to hide from.
  • A lot of what Chester is singing about are side effects of taking methamphetamines - a drug he used throughout his teens. The anxiety, hallucinations and a feeling of things crawling under his skin. (thanks, Abbey - Essex, England, for above for above 2)
  • This won a Grammy for Best Hard Rock Performance.
  • This was the second single off Hybrid Theory, the best selling album of 2001.
  • The video was nominated for Best Rock video on MTV's Video Music Awards. It lost to Limp Bizkit's "Rollin." (thanks, William - Indiana, IN, for above 4)
  • In the CD booklet, the lyrics "These wounds, they will not heal" were incorrectly written as "Consuming all I feel."
  • There is a remixed version of this song on Reanimation, their 2002 CD which contained remixes of the songs from Hybrid Theory and a couple of new songs. The remix features Staind's Aaron Lewis on vocals. (thanks, Nick - Paramus, NJ, for above 2)
  • Chester Bennington in Rolling Stone magazine 2002: "The song is about taking responsibility for your actions. I don't say 'you' at any point. It's about how I'm the reason that I feel this way. There's something inside me that pulls me down."
  • Chester Bennington claims it's hard to perform this song live due to his own personal experience similar to the problems in the song. He feels as though his past drug addiction, to crystal meth and other hard drugs such as cocaine, is literally under his skin. In an interview he said: "'Crawling' has caused me the most trouble live more than any other song. 'Crawling' is about feeling like I had no control over myself in terms of drugs and alcohol..." Breaking The Habit Lyrics

Memories consume like opening the wounds
    I'm picking me apart again
    You all assume
I'm safe here in my room
Unless I try to start again
I don't want to be the one the battles always choose
'cause inside I realize that I'm the one confused

    I don't know what's worth fighting for
Or why I have to scream
    I don't know why I instigate
And say what I don't mean
I don't know how I got this way
    I know it's not alright
    So I'm Breaking The Habit
    I'm breaking the habit tonight

    Clutching my cure
    I tightly lock the door
I try to catch my breath again
I hurt much more than any time before
I have no options left again
I don't want to be the one the battles always choose
'cause inside I realize that I'm the one confused

    I don't know what's worth fighting for
Or why I have to scream
    I don't know why I instigate
And say what I don't mean
I don't know how I got this way
    I'll never be alright
    So I'm breaking the habit
    I'm breaking the habit tonight

I'll paint it on the walls
'cause I'm the one at fault
    I'll never fight again
And this is how it ends

    I don't know what's worth fighting for
Or why I have to scream
But now I have some clarity to show you what I mean
I don't know how I got this way
    I'll never be alright
    So I'm breaking the habit
    I'm breaking the habit
    I'm breaking the habit tonight

    Breaking The Habit
  • This is about someone who has the tendency to do things to hurt himself physically and mentally. "You all assume I'm safe here in my room unless I try to start again" - this means he spends a lot of time in his room, where everyone thinks he can't do anything to hurt himself, but little do they know that he could at any time start hurting himself without them knowing. He regrets all the things he has done or had done to him in the past and he constantly picks himself apart for it. "I don't wanna be the one the battles always choose cause inside I realize I'm the one confused," is saying he gets a lot of problems thrown at him and he doesn't understand why this always seems to happen to him. (thanks, Elise - guelph, Canada)
  • More lyric analysis:
"Clutching my cure, I tightly lock the door" - The cure for emotional pain is to cause physical pain.
"You all assume I'm safe here in my room, unless I try to start again" - That is showing that the person prefers solitude, and although others think he's safest by himself, it's really when he's worst off, because he will start his self harm all over again. Also, he doesn't seem to understand his pain and all he wants is for it to go away, but the only known way for it to go away is to cause more. It's a vicious cycle. (thanks, Kalee - Wichita, KS)
  • Mike Shinoda had been trying to write a song around this lyrical idea for for over five years but nothing seemed to work. While the album was being put together, Mike began working on an interlude, crossing a digitally manipulated beat with strings and piano. Brad and Joe suggested that Mike make the small interlude into a whole song. The piece was extended to three minutes and sixteen seconds and went under the name "Drawing." When Mike took it home to write lyrics, it only took him less than 2 hours to get the song that he was trying to write for years. With some finishing touches of live piano and live strings, the song was finally complete - six years in the making. (thanks, Nick - Paramus, NJ)
  • Shinoda said this was inspired by the multitudes of fans who have expressed to the band how their music has helped them. Whether it be with depression, drugs, low self-esteem, traumas... or anything really. It's very much about the reciprocity between the band and the fans.
  • This won the Viewer's Choice award at the MTV Video Music awards. The video was animated by the same people who worked on the movie Kill Bill. (thanks, Allie - Santa Rosa, CA, for above 2)
  • Mike Shinoda on shoutweb.com : "This was going to be an instrumental track that was 10 minutes long. The guys convinced me to turn it into a full song. I'm proud of this song in a lot of ways. I put a lot of work into it. I just think it's really powerful. Chester's performance is one of his best. Lyrically, it's kind of just about getting away from the parts of you that you do not like. It goes into great deal about that type of situation. The things about our lyrics in general is that we spend so much time on them that there is no way I can tell you in conversation any better than the actual lyrics. If I sit here and think up something, that's an off-the-top-of-my-head summary of what those lyrics are about whereas those lyrics took five years to do. So those lyrics are the most accurate depiction of what that's about, not what I can tell you."

    Anticipating more
    While you debate
What it can take to instigate a war
Yeah, I've been hated more than

There's nothing they can fucking say
    They didn't say before

    You could never see it
    Your battle's not mine

But this is take a shot time
    You waiting for a purpose?
    I already got mine

You'll let me understand (You say)

All For Nothing, all for nothing

Came back, there's no other way to say it
So let me break this fucker down for ya'
    I really don't know ya'
You talk but let me show ya'
    Where to put your paranoia

  • This defiant song features a guest spot from Helmet vocalist and guitarist Page Hamilton. Vocalist Chester Bennington told New Zealand's 3 News, "When we got Page in, Mike [Shinoda, co-vocalist and producer] had written this chorus and sang it, and his voice had this tone, and it was unlike anything I'd heard from him before. And I was like, 'Dude, this is crazy, this sounds like a Helmet song! It's cool!' And we were like, 'Dude, why don't we see if we can get like Page in here?' You know? And if that's why the song says it's feeling like it should be, then why don't we just go straight to the source."

    I've seen the blood
    I've seen the broken
The lost and the sights unseen
    I want a flood
    I want an ocean
    To wash my confusion clean

I can't resolve this empty story
I can't repair the damage done

    We are the fortunate ones
    Who've never faced oppression's gun
    We are the fortunate ones
    Imitations of Rebellion

    We act it out
    We wear the colors
Defined by the things we own
    We're not without
    We're like each other
    Pretending we're here alone

And far away, they burn their buildings
Right in the face of the damage done

    We are the fortunate ones
    Who've never faced oppression's gun
    We are the fortunate ones
    Imitations of rebellion (Rebellion, rebellion)

    We lost before the start
    Rebellion, rebellion
One by one we fall apart

    Rebellion
  • The lyrics for this song talk about insurgents in certain parts of the world where they have a lot to rebel against. In comparison, America has it easy. Vocalist Mike Shinoda told Rolling Stone that what used to make the teenage Linkin Park members angry is not what makes them angry now.

"We're not 18-year-old kids making a loud record – we're 37-year-old adults making a loud record." he said. "And what makes a 37-year-old angry is different than what made us angry back in the day."
  • The song features signature guitar shredding by System of a Down guitarist Daron Malikian.

    Final Masquerade Lyrics

    Tearing me apart
    With words you wouldn't say
    Suddenly tomorrow's
    Moment washed away
    Cause I don't have a reason
And you don't have the time
    We both keep on waiting
    For something we won't find

    The light on the horizon
    Was brighter yesterday
    Shadows floating over
    Skies begin to fade
    You said it was forever
    But then it slipped away
    Standing at the end of
    The Final Masquerade

    All I ever wanted
    Secrets that you keep
    All you ever wanted
    The truth I couldn't speak
    Cause I can't see forgiveness
And you can't see the crime
And we both keep on waiting
    For what we left behind

    The light on the horizon
    Was brighter yesterday
    Shadows floating over
    Skies begin to fade
    You said it was forever
    But then it slipped away
    Standing at the end of
    The final masquerade

    Final masquerade
Standing at the end of the final masquerade

    The light on the horizon
    Was brighter yesterday
    Shadows floating over
    Skies begin to fade
    You said it was forever
    But then it slipped away
    Standing at the end of
    The final masquerade
    Standing at the end of
    The final masquerade
    Standing at the end of
    The final masquerade

    Final Masquerade
  • This heavy-hitting song was released as the third single from The Hunting Party. The album's rock sound came about as a result of vocalist Mike Shinoda's Internet trolling "I made some 'alternative pop' demos that sounded like they would fit in with what radio is currently playing," he explained to MTV News. "But then I came across a blog piece entitled 'Rock Sucks Right Now And It's Really Depressing.' It got me thinking. I ended up writing a response to it, and realized that what I had been working on wasn't really what I wanted to be making."

    In The End Lyrics

    It starts with one thing
    I don't know why
It doesn't even matter how hard you try
    Keep that in mind
    I designed this rhyme
    To explain in due time
    All I know
    Time is a valuable thing
Watch it fly by as the pendulum swings
Watch it count down to the end of the day
    The clock ticks life away

    It's so unreal
    Didn't look out below
Watch the time go right out the window
Trying to hold on, but you didn't even know
Wasted it all just to watch you go
    I kept everything inside
And even though I tried, it all fell apart
    What it meant to me
Will eventually be a memory of a time when

    I tried so hard
    And got so far
    But In The End
    It doesn't even matter
    I had to fall
    To lose it all
    But in the end
    It doesn't even matter

One thing, I don't know why
It doesn't even matter how hard you try,
    Keep that in mind
    I designed this rhyme,
To remind myself of a time when
    I tried so hard
In spite of the way you were mocking me
Acting like I was part of your property
Remembering all the times you fought with me
    I'm surprised it got so
Things aren't the way they were before
You wouldn't even recognize me anymore
Not that you knew me back then
But it all comes back to me in the end
    You kept everything inside
And even though I tried, it all fell apart
What it meant to me will eventually be a memory of a time when

    I tried so hard
    And got so far
    But in the end
    It doesn't even matter
    I had to fall
    To lose it all
    But in the end
    It doesn't even matter

I've put my trust in you
Pushed as far as I can go
    For all this
There's only one thing you should know
I've put my trust in you
Pushed as far as I can go
    For all this
There's only one thing you should know

    I tried so hard
    And got so far
    But in the end
    It doesn't even matter
    I had to fall
    To lose it all
    But in the end
    It doesn't even matter

  • The lyrics are based on the struggles lead singer Chester Bennington went through growing up. He was often picked on.
  • This video was shot on a Los Angeles sound stage. The statue's head, where the band is performing, was built there, but the rest was CGI. The areas where Mike is standing "in the desert" are real - he was sitting on real grass and he was walking on real stones, but they were about 10 feet by 5 feet. The rest was, you guessed it, CGI. Halfway through filming, directors Joe Hahn and Nathan Cox decided to set water pipes off above the band, so they all got completely soaked. Nathan could see how irritated the band were by this, so he invited his friend (who's in a Bluegrass band) over and he performed some Linkin Park songs, including an hilarious version of "Crawling." In the video, if you look very closely, you can see Joe's belt buckle, which says "MR HAHN." The song is about feeling like there's no point in living, and was originally seen as being very negative, so the video was very positive. It's like a cycle of life (the song starts and ends with the piano) - the desert is very dead, but the rain comes and at the end, there's flowers and rivers and butterflies. (thanks, Abbey - Essex, England)
  • In March 2001, 15-year-old Charles Andrew Williams shot and killed two of his classmates at his high school in Santee, California. He left a note for his father with the lyrics to this as an attempt to explain his feelings. The key lines were "I tried so hard and got so far, but in the end, it doesn't really matter."
  • The video was shot in a California desert while the band was between stops on the 2001 Ozzfest tour.
  • Hybrid Theory was the #1 selling album of 2001.
  • This was the third single from Linkin Park's first album. Their first two singles were "One Step Closer" and "Crawling." All three songs explore the dark side of growing up.
  • "Hybrid Theory" is the original name of the band. They decided to use it as the album title.
  • This was released as a single about nine months after the album. It took a while for the album to catch on, but it eventually sold very well.
  • On their 2002 album Reanimation, this was remixed by Kutmasta Kurt with vocals by Motion Man. The title was changed to "Enth E Nd," and it was given a hip-hop sound.
  • At the 2002 MTV Video Music Awards, this won for Best Rock Video. Sammy Hagar and David Lee Roth, who were touring together at the time, presented the award. Before announcing the winner, Roth asked Hagar what his favorite Linkin Park song was, and Hagar said he didn't know any Linkin Park songs.
  • Mike Shinoda: "I remember putting this together in our rehearsal studio on Hollywood and Vine, working overnight in a room with no windows. I had no idea what time of day it was; I just slept when I was tired, and worked on this song until it took shape. The first guy to hear it was Rob, who told me (I'm paraphrasing) that this was 'exactly the kind of song he wanted us to write." (thanks, Bertrand - Paris, France)
