Small Black Flowers That Grow In The Sky Lyrics

You have your very own number
They dress your cage in its nature
Once you roared now you just grunt lame
Pace around pathetic pound games

want to get out won't miss you sensaround
To carry your own dead to swing your tyre tricks
want to get out in here you're bred dead quick
For the outside
The Small Black Flowers That Grow In The Sky

They drag sticks along your walls
Harvest your ovaries dead mothers crawl
Here comes warden, Christ, temple, elders
Environment not yours you see through it all

want to get out won't miss you sensaround
Carry your own dead to swing your tyre tricks
want to get out in here you're bred dead quick
For the outside
The small black flowers that grow in the sky

Here chewing your tail is joy

Small Black Flowers That Grow In The Sky
  • Manic Street Preachers guitarist Richey Edwards wrote the lyrics, marking one of his last contributions to the band. Edwards disappeared in February 1995 and was never found. The band soldiered on without him, not knowing if he was dead or in hiding. Everything Must Go was the first album released in his absence, and it contained five songs he co-wrote.

"Small Black Flowers That Grow In The Sky" empathizes with a zoo animal's state of mind while in captivity, an insight into how Edwards was feeling. Manic's bass player Nicky Wire, who was very close to Edwards, told Dazed & Confused that Edwards wrote the song about "getting born in zoos and just going mad with boredom." Wire added, "But if you read it, you'd just think it was about him."
  • This gentle number is a rare rock song with a harp; it was played by Julie Aliss, who also appeared on the 1987 Siouxsie and the Banshees album Through the Looking Glass.

    Fatal Distraction Lyrics

    Fatal Distraction
  • This yearning ballad was released as the second single from Mario's Restoration album. It finds Mario attracted to his best friend's girlfriend, who is proving to be a fatal distraction.

"I'm telling you how bad I want you
I'm telling you the bad I won't do
It's bad that I don't have you, like I want to."

The song was inspired by a real life situation in which Mario was dating his manager's ex-girlfriend. He explained to Baltimore's 92Q Jams: "It just talks about the distractions and temptations and the infatuation that can have on a man when it comes to a woman."

    Lost River Lyrics

    Lost River
  • As their name suggests, many of Murder by Death's songs have very dark themes. The band's cello player, Sarah Balliet, got the ball rolling on this one.

The Lost River is the name of a real river in Southern Indiana, where the band is from. Their frontman Adam Turla told us: "We drive by it a lot and we say, 'Oh, lost river.' It's a really great name - sort of conjures up great ideas. So we wrote a song about a person who drowned in that river and their spirit tries to drag down their lover with them, calling them to the river, like, 'Come on, come on in, the water's fine.' We do a lot of songs that are sort of supernatural."

    One Night In Bangkok Lyrics

    Bangkok, Oriental setting
And the city don't know that the city is getting
The creme de la creme of the chess world in a
Show with everything but Yul Brynner

Time flies doesn't seem a minute
Since the Tirolean spa had the chess boys in it
All change don't you know that when you
Play at this level there's no ordinary venue

It's Iceland or the Philippines or Hastings or
    or this place!

One Night In Bangkok and the world's your oyster
The bars are temples but the pearls ain't free
You'll find a god in every golden cloister
And if you're lucky then the god's a she
I can feel an angel sliding up to me

    One town's very like another
When your head's down over your pieces, brother

    It's a drag, it's a bore, it's really such a pity
To be looking at the board, not looking at the city

Whaddya mean? Ya seen one crowded, polluted, stinking town

    Tea, girls, warm, sweet
Some are set up in the Somerset Maugham suite

    Get Thai'd! You're talking to a tourist
Whose every move's among the purest
I get my kicks above the waistline, sunshine

One night in Bangkok makes a hard man humble
Not much between despair and ecstasy
One night in Bangkok and the tough guys tumble
Can't be too careful with your company
I can feel the devil walking next to me

    Siam's gonna be the witness
To the ultimate test of cerebral fitness
This grips me more than would a
Muddy old river or reclining Buddha

And thank God I'm only watching the game controlling it

I don't see you guys rating
The kind of mate I'm contemplating
I'd let you watch, I would invite you
But the queens we use would not excite you

So you better go back to your bars, your temples, your massage
    parlours

One night in Bangkok and the world's your oyster
The bars are temples but the pearls ain't free
You'll find a god in every golden cloister
A little flesh, a little history
I can feel an angel sliding up to me

One night in Bangkok makes a hard man humble
Not much between despair and ecstasy
One night in Bangkok and the tough guys tumble
Can't be too careful with your company
I can feel the devil walking next to me

    One Night In Bangkok
  • The song tells of the meeting of two great chess players, one Soviet and one American, in Bangkok, which is the capital of Thailand. Chess is a musical production that uses a US-USSR chess rivalry as a metaphor for the Cold War, but this song just contains double-entendres about the game of Chess compared to the Bangkok nightlife. The example often used is "I would invite you, but the queens we use would not excite you."
  • Chess was a musical that premiered in London's West End. This song was written for the 1984 concept album, which was recorded well ahead of the production. The album was very successful considering it was for a musical. The album charted in the Top 10 in the UK, #47 in the US, and #1 in Sweden. Another song from the album, "I Know Him So Well," held the #1 spot in the UK for four weeks in February 1985, being deposed by "You Spin Me Right Round" by Dead or Alive. The Broadway production of Chess was heavily altered and unsuccessful.
  • Along with the rest of the songs from Chess, the music was written by Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson of ABBA, and Tim Rice wrote the lyrics. Rice has written for many film and theatrical productions, including the song "Can You Feel The Love Tonight" from The Lion King.
  • A little over 2 minutes into this song, there is a flute solo using a difficult flutter tongue technique similar to that used on many Jethro Tull songs. It was played by a Swedish musician named Bjorn Jason Lindh.
  • Murray Head is an actor who has been in several movies and stage productions. He is barely out of the one-hit-wonder category because of his 1971 version of "Superstar" from the Jesus Christ Superstar production where he played Judas. It his #14 in the US in 1971.
  • Before Murray went to Mill Hill he had been at Hampton Grammar School with Paul Samwell-Smith (ex-Yardbirds & Cat Stevens' producer) In 1975 Paul Samwell Smith made a record of Murray's songs for Islands Records. The album Say It Ain't So became a cult album in France. His father was Seafield Head, a documentary maker, and is Mother was Helen Shingler, an actress who played Mrs. Maigret alongside Rupert Davies as Maigret in the 60's TV series of the same name. His younger brother is Anthony 'Little Britain' Head.
  • A dance remix by the German production team Vinylshakerz was released in 2005.
  • Mike Tyson performs this in the 2011 movie The Hangover 2, which of course takes place mostly in Bangkok. Tyson appears as a surprise wedding guest and takes the stage near the end of the movie.

    Gazpacho Lyrics

Saw you walking on your velvet lawn
Is it lonely on the moon?
You took a dive and swallowed all you could
Did you drink too much too soon?
Nothing left for you to fight about
And no one wants to see you try
The nearest neighbours are a mile away
Does the ocean hear you cry?

    Punching at the sky
They say the King is losin´ his grip again
They said you´re bullet proof, they said you feel no pain
It seems the hero is misunderstood again

Is it love or is it surgery
Makes her seem so ill at ease
As she´s begging you to please calm down
In her silk Armani on her knees

Did you carry out those threats I heard
Or were you only playing macho?
And the stains on her Versace scarf
    Were they really just Gazpacho?

They say the King is watching his back again
They say the King is losing his grip again
Raging like a bull to an empty ring
D´you think they will forgive a hero anything?

Now the ring is just a band of gold
And your wife needs police protection
While you´re sparring with the journalists
You´re trying to win back her affection
Is this what it means to be a man
    Boxing up all your emotion
So now she´s gone and you´re alone at last
You can tell it to the ocean

They say the King is losing his grip again
They say the King is countin´ his numbered days
You never lost a fight in your whole life
You never had no trouble sleepin´ through the night
The bottle and the doctor get you through the day
The boys who run the house´ll make it all okay
You think they will forgive a hero anything
    Maybe Hollywood
    But maybe then again

Now the ring is just a band of gold
    Drive the road

    Gazpacho
  • Gazpacho is a kind of tomato soup. In this song, Steve Hogarth sings:

Did you carry out those threats I heard
Or were you only playing macho?
And the stains on her Versace scarf
    Were they really just Gazpacho?

This is a vague reference to the O.J. Simpson trial, which was the big news story around the time the song was written. In the trail, the American football star was accused of murdering his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and a waiter named Ronald Goldman. Despite blood evidence pointing to Simpson, he was found not guilty in a trial that garnered massive news coverage.

Gazpacho never factored into the case, but it's a great word to sing, letting Hogarth flex his vocals a bit.
  • Steve Hogarth wrote the lyrics with John Helmer, an author he often collaborated with. In addition to the Simpson case, the movie Raging Bull, starring Robert de Niro as a tormented boxer, was an inspiration. The line, "Now the ring is just a band of gold" is something Helmer came up with, referring to how life in a boxing ring gave way to marriage.
  • Musically, Hogarth says the band was "trying to capture the spirit of early Yes" on this track. The bass is out front in the mix, which suited Marillion bass player Pete Trewavas just fine. "This is the perfect song for a bass player to show off in," he wrote in press materials. "It has the pounding verses and lovely high runs in the choruses. I remember us writing this and getting the verses together. I instantly started playing the heavy Rickenbacker type bass line for the verse and wonder if I would get away with it."
  • The bit at the beginning which sounds like John Lennon was taken from a film called John Lennon: A Journey In The Life, where the actor Bernard Hill speaks his words. The passage used comes from Lennon's 1980 Playboy interview, where he said, "I would find myself seeing hallucinatory images of my face changing and becoming cosmic and complete."

You Know What They Do To Guys Like Us In Prison
  • This song is about a man who is involved in a crime ("In the middle of a gunfight, in the center of a restaurant"). He believes that the police will be unable to catch him ("Well they're never gonna get me, I'm like a bullet through a flock of doves"), but he is arrested and sent to prison. The rest of the song refers to prison life: "Will they give me the chair or lethal injection or swing from a rope if you dare." This refers to the thoughts of the prisoner. The line, "What they ask of you will make you want to say 'so long"' refers to him contemplating suicide and may also refer to prison rape and other abuse.
  • Bert McCracken of The Used provides backup vocals during the second verse of the song.

  • James Hetfield says this song is about children who look outside of their homes for heroes, when their heroes should be their parents.
  • Load was originally meant to be a double album set with ReLoad, but due to unforeseen problems in the producing of ReLoad the album was split.
  • Guitarist Kirk Hammett told Kerrang! September 13, 2008 that this contains one of his favorite Metallica guitar solos. He explained: "it's not a particularly shreddy solo, but it's a really melodic and I feel it definitely lifts the song up to a different level after it comes in."

"One of the most important things about the blues to me has always been the harp," said Knopfler. "Seeing Muddy Waters as a kid made a big impression on me, the harp was burbling away all the time, the band was swinging. And to me the greatest modern exponent is Kim Wilson, he's been my top man for many years, so it was really great to have him on board. We hit it off straight away and got a great session going."

    La Tristesse Durera Lyrics

    Life has been unfaithful
And it all promised so so much
    I am a relic
I am just a petrified cry
Wheeled out once a year, a cenotaph souvenir
The applause nails down my silence

    La Tristesse Durera
Scream to a sigh, to a sigh
    La Tristesse Durera
Scream to a sigh, to a sigh

    I see liberals
I am just a fashion accessory
    People send postcards
And they all hope I'm feeling well
    I retreat into self-pity, it's so easy
    Where they patronise my misery

    La Tristesse Durera
Scream to a sigh, to a sigh
    La Tristesse Durera
Scream to a sigh, to a sigh

    I sold my medal
    It paid a bill
    It sells at market stalls
    Parades Milan catwalks
    The sadness will never go
    Will never go away
    Baby it's here to stay

    La Tristesse Durera
  • Manics guitarist Richey James Edwards (from Melody Maker, June 19, 1993): "We took the title from a book on Van Gogh, although the song's got nothing to do with Van Gogh. It means something like 'the sadness goes on,' and it's about the way life doesn't get any better as you get older. It's always a beautiful image every year when the war veterans turn out at the Cenotaph, and everyone pretends to care about them - but then they're shuffled off again and forgotten. I'm much more sympathetic towards older people than towards my generation - I think they have a lot more dignity, and seem to be able to take care of their problems themselves. People of my generation seems to be so selfish. I'm no exception, because you can't escape from the culture that surrounds you. A phrase like 'Trade Unionism,' and the idea of caring about the community you come from, is now seen as laughable - and of course, that's a product of the political culture over the last 15 years."

Only in you can we see our end

  • Bassist Nicky Wire penned the song's lyrics by text message and texted them out to vocalist James Dean Bradfield and drummer Sean Moore. He was stuck back home in Wales looking after sick members of his family while his bandmates were recording at Berlin's Hansa studios. Wire explained to The Quietus : "My Dad was in hospital, and my wife was in hospital, the kids had norovirus and I was just mopping up sick and s--t, amazingly I didn't get ill but everyone else was so poorly. I've never been through so many Flash wipes and so much Domestos in my entire life. I was walking round in rubber gloves. It was proper Howard Hughes, I had face masks on and everything, but there you go."

"Out of misery a flower blossomed," Wire continued. "We'd arranged this two week session in Hansa which I was so looking forward to, and everyone did get slightly better so I thought I might go for the last four days- and then I got snowed in. James said, 'Have you got anything going?' So I texted him that and within two days they'd done that track. I didn't even write it down on paper, which I've never done before."
  • Wire explained the song's meaning to The Quietus: "It's about crawling through the ship wreckage and still trying," he said, "I guess like a junkie will try and get some semblance of justification and routine, I'm always obsessed with how, in whatever situation I'm in, trying to invent that one bit of stability to keep it all together."
  • That's Sean Moore playing the flugelhorn (a kind of trumpet) solo. Wire commented to The Quietus, "It's very 'God Only Knows', something about it lifts the song out of the pit. Something about how you've been through all of that and now you're out."

Lost on my own in the blazing sun
Down through the streets of Tokyo

I dream of the Tokyo skyline
I miss the emptiness and the silence

    (I Miss The) Tokyo Skyline
  • Nicky Wire's lyrics for this song are about the band being completely seduced by Tokyo. He told The Quietus : "I think we all were when we first went there and we did the 'Motorcycle Emptiness' video, it's the first place we ever got a gold disc. I'll never forget, we turned up at the airport at six in the morning and there were hundreds of people, we all looked behind us because we thought The Black Crowes were there or something. We realised they were all waiting for us, and thought, 'Fu--ing hell!' It was such an indelible scar. It's the most alien culture I've ever been to, in a good way, and I've loved the feeling of safety. Whenever we go back there's a special bond."
  • Vocalist James Dean Bradfield described this track to NME as having a "fragility, but it's not mournful or dampened."
  • Here are three more songs that were inspired by the Japanese city:

    "Tokyo Melody" by Helmut Zacharias.

    "Elephant Song" by Enemy.

    "Paris, Tokyo" by Lupe Fiasco.

Pedant's corner: Actually, Tokyo isn't officially a city. In 1943 Tokyo Metropolis was formed from the merger of the former Tokyo Prefecture and the city of Tokyo. Since then, Tokyo has been commonly referred to as a "metropolitan prefecture."

  • Bassist Nicky Wire's lyrics for this song were originally about the Manic's original guitarist and lyricist Richey Edwards, who disappeared on February 1, 1995. He told The Quietus : "I think this is as close to a love song to Richey as we're ever going to write. It's the oldest song on the album, I wrote the music and the words and I'd kept it hidden for about three years, because it's one of those topics you just feel a bit… but then you realise it's 20 years. We've done stuff like 'Cardiff Afterlife' and 'Nobody Loved You', but they were a bit more autobiographical - this is more, 'Fu--ing hell, it would be good if you were around, if you just turned up one day. Imagine how many festivals we could headline?' At which he would laugh. I just miss his pulverising intellect. It's not just us - I think the musical landscape misses him."

"Then I lost a really good friend at Sony, our product manager for the last five years," Wire continued, "and he died really young, so I changed a couple of lyrics because it had an awful impact. It became this song about redemptive loss."
  • Wire sings on this song rather than The Manic's regular vocalist, James Dean Bradfield. The bassist told The Quietus: "I think this is my best vocal, I put a lot of work into it. James said he thought this is the one my voice should be on, because it's got that sort of cracked frailty in the verses. I'm dreading playing it live - I don't like singing live."

My eco-system is based on hatred
    My DNA remains untested
I hate the tyranny of the Sun
It always rises, always comes down

    I'm Running Out Of Fantasy

    I don't expect your sympathy
    I'm old, I'm strange I'm confidential
Has my fantasy run out of delusion
Has my fantasy reached its logical conclusion?

    I'm running out of fantasy

The dying fall of my sentences
    The magic of lost consequences
The seduction of a fading power
In a hotel room in the middle of nowhere

    I'm running out of fantasy

    I don't expect your sympathy
    I'm old, I'm strange I'm confidential
Has my fantasy run out of delusion?
Has my fantasy reached its logical conclusion?

    I'm running out of fantasy

    I'm revealing myself in layers
Exposing a core to the inner eye
Drawn deep into some distant episodes
I don't know whether to laugh or cry

    Running out of fantasy

The obsession with change has bled my dry
    My fantasy forever locked inside
The obsession with change has bled my dry

    Running Out Of Fantasy
  • This stark meditation on the delusion of Rock 'n' Roll was inspired by the 1974 book Conundrum by the Welsh historian and travel writer Jan Morris. Born James Humphrey, Morris is a transsexual woman who published under her birth name until 1972, when she transitioned from living as male to living as female. Conundrum is her personal narrative of transsexualism. Bassist and lyricist Nicky Wire told The Quietus : "She had to go to Morocco to become a woman. Jan's probably my favourite travel writer of all time. When Jan became a woman she stayed with her wife, which I think is remarkable. It was that idea of drastic change and realisation that you have to push for the truth to be happy, which I apply to being in a band."
  • The song title comes from a line ("I am running out of fantasy.") in the Werner Herzog-directed documentary Burden Of Dreams, which was shot during and about the chaotic production of his 1982 South American jungle-based film Fitzcarraldo. Wire explained to The Quietus: "He's making Fitzcarraldo and he's pulling a fu--ing boat up the mountain through the Peruvian forest and it's not working, you can see he's thinking, 'What the f--k am I trying to do here?' All of those elements combine. There's this line in there, 'The seduction of a fading power in a hotel room in the middle of nowhere' and that's the core of it really, that's what I love about being in a band, but I realise that kind of seductive delusion is probably over."

    30 Year War Lyrics

    30 Year War
  • Bassist and lyricist Nicky Wire told The Quietus about this angry critique of the establishment's attack on the working classes since the Margaret Thatcher-led government of the 1980s: "It doesn't matter what government is around," he said, "we always love to portray ourselves as this holier than thou country, and yet we have scandal after scandal uncovered, right to the root of power, government, Murdoch, the police, Hillsborough, this stupification of the class I grew up in, which I think all stems from Thatcherism really. The idea that if you break down any power that we had we're going to be fu--ed forever."
  • The lyric "hiding Lowry's paintings" refers to L.S. Lowry (1887-1976), an English artist who became famous for painting scenes of life in the industrial districts of northern England during the middle of the 20th century. They were peopled with spindly human figures who looked like matchstick men. Wire explained to The Quietus: "The idea of connoisseurs of taste is such a London-centric thing: 'We'll keep these in storage because he's a Sunday painter.' He's not, he's a true genius - it's not just matchstick men, there's true depth to his painting. I find that elitist, 'We know what's better' is so all pervading, from the monarchy to fu--ing Cameron."

    Mystery Disease Lyrics

    It can’t pay attention
    What slips into the system
A light touch, a whisper that puts you to sleep
Don’t sympathize with the Mystery Disease

All it is is a feeling,
Pain in a dress too revealing,
A lost bond an old friend who likes what it sees
You can’t shake off the mystery disease

    Lovers in a past life
Meet in the street close to midnight,
A last look sweet like the end of a dream,
Then fall back into the mystery disease

Go on, tell your symptoms to me
It’s not in any of the books you can read
It’s no fun to face what you don’t get to be,
But what’s one more to the mystery disease?

    Floating impatience
    Snuffs my limited sapience
Black smoke as soon as the pressure’s released
Deep space sighs, the mystery disease

    Consumed by a weakness
    Cut with perpetual unrest
You see stars, sunsets blurred through a screen,
Trap what you want, waste what you need

And when the west wind sweeps through the leaves,
Emperors of history fall to their knees
Small fronds can’t see the wood for the trees,
Left in the dust of the mystery disease

    Mystery Disease
  • This mystical, hallucinogenic sprawl was inspired in part by a friend of MGMT who fell seriously ill with an unknown ailment.

Another inspiration was Steven Martin's memoirs about living in southeast Asia, Opium Fiend. Vocalist Andrew VanWyngarden told NME: "He's this guy who was obsessed with opium paraphernalia and that era of opium use in the late 1800s, then got addicted to it. It's got the wispy spirit of opiate drugs crawling through it."

The song, which Smith sings in a faux British accent, showcases her change in musical direction. "Just for clarity, the word fling means something that's short lived," Willow Smith said during a performance of the track on the Queen Latifah Show. "And this song is dedicated to all the kids around the world whose summer is never long enough."

    Lose Control
  • This song, from Missy Elliott's sixth album The Cookbook, is mainly about dancing to the music. Guest performer Ciara told MTV News: "It's about music, how music makes you feel and makes you lose control."
  • Ciara and Fatman Scoop are featured as guest performers on this track. Elliott also worked with Ciara on "1, 2 Step" for her debut album Goodies. That song earned a Grammy Award nomination for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration but lost to "Numb/Encore" by Jay-Z and Linkin Park.
  • Motley Crue drummer Tommy Lee stars in the second part of the music video when Fatman Scoop is repeating verses. This section is not part of the album version of the song. The video won a Grammy Award for Best Short Form Music Video, beating Gorillaz' "Feel Good Inc.," Jamiroquai's "Feels Just Like it Should," Martina McBride's "God's Will" and Sarah McLachlan's "World on Fire."
  • Elliott closed her performance at the 2015 Super Bowl halftime show with a bit of this song. The star of the show, Katy Perry, left the stage at this point so she could be strapped into her shooting star contraption and fly around the stadium for her final number.

    In My Darkest Hour Lyrics

    In my hour of need
    Ha, you're not there
And though I reach out for you
    Wouldn't lend a hand
    Through the darkest hour
Grace did not shine on me
It feels so cold, very cold
    No one cares for me
Did you ever think I get lonely?
Did you ever think that I needed love?
Did you ever think to stop thinking
You're the only one that I'm thinking of?
You'll never know how hard I tried
To find my space and satisfy you too.
Things will be better when I'm dead and gone
    Don't try to understand
    Knowing you, I'm probably wrong
But oh, how I lived my life for you
    Still you'd turn away
Now as I die for you
My flesh still crawls as I breathe your name
All there years I thought I was wrong
Now I know it was you
Raise your head, raise your face, your eyes
Tell me who you think you are, who?
I walk, I walk alone into the promised land.
There's a better place for me
    But it's far, far away
Everlasting life for me in a perfect world
    But I gotta die first,
Please God send me on my way
Time has a way of taking time
Loneliness is not only felt by fools
Alone I call to ease the pain
Yearning to be held by you
Alone, so alone, I'm lost, consumed by the pain
The pain, the pain, the pain
    Won't you hold me again?
You just laughed, ha ha, bitch!
My whole life is work built on the past
But the time has come when all things shall pass
    The good has passed away.

    In My Darkest Hour
  • Dave Mustaine wrote most of this song in just one sitting after learning that bass player Cliff Burton had died in a tour bus accident while traveling with Metallica on their Master of Puppets tour. While he was a member of Metallica from 1981-1983, Mustaine became good friends with Burton; he fondly recalls driving to practice, listening to Lynyrd Skynyrd, and smoking pot with him. Mustaine says that when he heard the news, he headed straight to downtown Los Angeles, where he bought heroin. He began crying, and through the tears came up with "In My Darkest Hour."
  • Burton's death was the inspiration for this song, but the lyrics are not directly about him, as the song is about remaining true to your friends and being there in their time of need. Mustaine didn't get a lot of support from his family, and also felt betrayed by Metallica when they kicked him out of the band.

Reflecting on the song, Mustaine explained that he treasures his relationship with his fans, who have shown him the kind of support he didn't get as a kid.

The song doesn't have a happy ending, but many Megadeth fans found it very helpful in getting them through difficult times, since it can be comforting to know that others have been through it.
  • The video was directed by Penelope Spheeris, who would later direct the film Wayne's World. Spheeris used the song in her 1988 documentary The Decline Of Western Civilization Part II: The Metal Years.

    Teardrop
  • Massive Attack uses a variety of vocalists. On this one it was Elizabeth Fraser, whose lyrics were inspired by the death of her one-time close friend, singer-songwriter Jeff Buckley. The news that Buckley had drowned whilst swimming came while Fraser was recording this song. "That was so weird," she recalled to The Guardian in 2009. "I'd got letters out and I was thinking about him. That song's kind of about him - that's how it feels to me anyway."

Fraser sang for The Cocteau Twins, worked on three tracks of Massive Attack's Mezzanine album and contributed to the soundtrack of Lord of the Rings - Fellowship Of The King.
  • Part of this is used in the theme music for the Fox TV show House MD. Massive Attack's Robert "3D" Del Naja told The Guardian February 6, 2010 that the band cut themselves out of a fortune with the licensing of this song to the show. He explained: "We got an email from Bryan Singer saying the entire concept of House was based on 'Teardrop.' We were flattered. We let him have it."

Singer, who was an executive producer on the show, was adamant about using the song because its music video, featuring an animatronic fetus singing from inside a womb, inspired the show's special effects. He explained to Ain't It Cool News :

"What I brought to the show was the idea of making that effect less CGI and using a more practical stuff, taking from the famous 'Teardrop' video by Massive Attack, building bladders and organ models and shooting them in water tanks to create a more viscerally real portrayal of the human body. I defined that element."
  • This won the 1998 MTV Europe Music Award for Best Video. The song's music video featured a plastic fetus in the womb, lip-synching the song. 3D told The Guardian: "We kept the Teardrop baby but being made of old latex, it just doesn't have the longevity. It's now just a primitive animatronic half-creature in a puddle of rotten latex. It's still quite scary: it's like a museum piece, but for all the wrong reasons."
  • Part of this song was used in Season 1 of the TV program Prison Break.
  • In 2007 the British singer-songwriter Newton Faulkner released a cover of this as a download only single, peaking at #60 in the UK singles charts.

    Alien Days Lyrics

Sometimes the windows combine with the seams in a way
That twitches on a peak at the place where the spirit was slain
    One foot leads to another
Night's for sleep, blue curtains, covers
    Sequins in the eyes
That's a fine time to dine
Divine who's circling, feeding the cards to the midwives
    Who love those Alien Days
    The nonstop alien days
    Ooh the alien days

Must've skipped the ship and joined the team
    For a ride
A couple hours to learn the controls
    And commandeer both my eyes
    Hey!
Be quick dear, times are uncertain
One month crawling, next year blurring
    Decades in the drain
    Monograms on the brain
Decide what's working and what's moved on
    To the last phase
    The floodgate alien days
    I love those alien days
    Mmm... the alien days

When the peels are down, it feels like traveling in style
You don't need wings to hover forty ton stones for a mile
And in the summer, virgin visions
    Mindless humming
Numbers can't decide if the day's supposed to smile

Today find infinite ways it could be
    Plenty worse
    It's a blessing but it's also a curse

Those days taught me everything I know
    How to catch a feeling
And when to let it go
How all the scheming, soulless creatures
Can't find dreamer's honey in the hive
If it's right beneath the nose

And when the light is new
    The sky shows trembling cartoons
You don't need smoke to cover
Most of the world in a gloom
But here comes racer number 7
Watch my fingers ripping out the lines

If it looks like we could lose
If it looks like we could lose
If it looks like we could lose
