Automatic Lyrics

Quarter in a payphone
Drying laundry on the line
Watching sun tea in the window
Pocket watch, tellin' time
Seems like only yesterday, I'd get a blank cassette
Record the country countdown, 'cause I couldn't buy it yet

If we drove all the way to Dallas
Just to buy an Easter dress
We'd take along a Rand McNally, stand in line to pay for gas
God knows that shifting gears ain't what it used to be
I learned to drive that '55, just like a queen three on a tree

Hey what ever happened to waiting your turn
Doing it all by hand, 'cause when everything is handed to you
It's only worth as much as the time put in
It all just seems so good the way we had it
Back before everything became Automatic

If you had something to say
You'd write it on a piece of paper
Then you put a stamp on it
And they'd get it three days later
Boys would call the girls
And girls would turn them down
Staying married was the only way to work your problems out

Hey what ever happened to waiting your turn
Doing it all by hand, 'cause when everything is handed to you
It's only worth as much as the time put in
It all just seems so good the way we had it
Back before everything became automatic
Automatic

Let's roll the windows down
Windows with the cranks
Come on let's take a picture
The kind you gotta shake

Hey what ever happened to waiting your turn
Doing it all by hand, 'cause when everything is handed to you
It's only worth as much as the time put in
It all just seems so good the way we had it
Back before everything became automatic, automatic

Automatic
  • The first single from Miranda Lambert's fifth album finds the singer giving fans a glimpse of her past. The Lindale, Texas, native co-wrote the autobiographical song with Nicolle Galyon ("We Were Us") and Natalie Hemby ("White Liar"). "'Automatic' is a song about the good life," Lambert said. "It's about slowing down, taking a breath and remembering what it's like to live life a little more simply. It's not about going back, but reminiscing about what it was like to hang laundry on the line and wait for it to dry and my dad teaching me how to drive my '55 Chevy that I still have but don't drive nearly enough."

She added, "The song brings back good memories and it reminds me to take a deep breath and to remember that getting there is half the fun."
  • This won Single of the Year at the 2014 CMA Awards. Lambert also won Album of the Year (for Automatic), Female of the Year and Musical Event Of The Year (for her "We Were Us" collaboration with Keith Urban) at the same ceremony.
  • This won Song of the Year at the 2015 ACM Awards. Lambert won with co-writers Nicolle Galyon and Natalie Hemby and after taking the stage, Hemby told her, "I hope I can be your Dean Dillon, 'cause you're my George Strait."

Lambert took home four trophies in total from the ceremony, the others being Female Vocalist of the Year (for the sixth year in a row), Album of the Year for Platinum plus a Milestone Award.

    Platinum Lyrics

    My disposition permeates
The room when I walk in the place
    I'm sorry!
By calculation I'm way too much
    Pretentiously I bitch a buck
    But you bought it!
    I can't exceed my reputation
A small town girl with compensation
    Explorin' all my possibilities
Well don't you know I'll blaze a trail
    But hell
    You can come with me

    What doesn't kill you
    Only makes you blonder
    My heels and my hotel
    They just got taller
    Somethin' bout Platinum irrefutably
    Looks as good on records
    As it does on me

    Historically real men prefer
The Marilyns with curls and curves
    and I've got it!
    Genetically or chemically
As long as it contains some bleach
    I want it!

You don't need to be a fighter
Honey, just go one shade lighter
    You'll acquire everything you want
    When your roots grow out
    And things go South
Hey, go back to the salon!

    What doesn't kill you
    Only makes you blonder
    My heels and my hotel
    They just got taller
    Somethin' bout platinum irrefutably
Looks as good on records as it does on me

    Hey! What doesn't kill you
    Only makes you blonder
In fact, my heels and my hotel
    They just got taller
    Somethin' bout platinum irrefutably
Looks as good on records as it does on me

    Platinum
  • This blond-ambition anthem is the title track of Miranda Lambert's fifth album. During an interview with Billboard magazine the comment was made that "it might seem cocky" to name a record 'Platinum,' though all of Lambert's previous long players have indeed gone platinum.

"That's not what I'm thinking," she responded. "I mean, yeah, I'd love that - Mom says, 'Say it as though it's so.' I hope all my albums go platinum. But it's more about my life and my lifestyle." Which means, broadly: "Platinum is a lot of things: It's hair, it's diamonds and platinum, it's Bud Light Platinum, it's the color of an Airstream."
  • Lambert wrote this song with Nicolle Galyon and Natalie Hemby in her condo in Nashville on Music Row. She told Billboard: "The lyrics are funny, two of us are blonde, and we're just talking about stuff like that, 'can you believe we're sitting in a high-rise condo right now, from where we all came from?'"
  • The song features background vocals by Nicolle Galyon, Season 2 The Voice contestant Gwen Sebastian who sings with Blake Shelton on the road, and Aubrie Sellers, whose mother is Lee Ann Womack and stepfather Platinum producer Frank Liddell.

Lambert recalled: "I wanted it to be like a bunch of girls gossiping. Some people get somewhere just by putting on a lower cut shirt and making there hair a little blonder. That's how some people do it, and that's fine too, whatever it takes. But I wanted that feel in the song when we cut it, 'let's get some girls in here and see what it sounds like it.'"

"We just got in there and got some cocktails and started talking and singing, and that's what the songs supposed to be like," she added, "a gossipy girls song and kind of an anthem."
  • The Platinum album sold 179,000 units in its first week, to debut at #1 on the Billboard 200 - the first time Lambert had topped the all-genre chart.

The LP also reached the summit of Billboard Top Country Albums, making the Lambert the first artist in the history of the chart to see all of their first five albums debut at #1.
  • The initial spark of inspiration for the song came from Galyon. "It started off with Nicolle. She had a line, 'What doesn't kill you only makes you blonder,'" Hemby told Billboard magazine. "Miranda had one that said 'My heels and my hotels - they just got taller.' That made me laugh out loud."

    Priscilla Lyrics

We look we got it made, don't we?
    Permanent accessory
On their arms and always on their minds
Rings, we gotta wear the real big rings
    Big smiles like figurines
Big hair for the real big kind
When they turn it on and slick back their hair
We turn around and the world's right there
Woman to woman, I'm starting to see
What happened to you is happening to me

    Priscilla, Priscilla
How'd you get him to yourself?
Between the whistle calls and Southern dolls
It's enough to put a home through hell
    Priscilla, Priscilla
    He's always in high demand
How do you or don't you get the love you want when everybody wants your man?
It's a difficult thing being Queen to the King
    And I feel ya
    Priscilla

Golden gate, we have to put up a gate
    To find time to procreate
Or at least that's what we read
Bodyguard, didn't know I was his bodyguard
And I shouldn't have to play the part
At least while we're not in bed
You and me share a unique position
Married to a man who's married to attention
Couldn't think of anybody better to ask
How to be the first to make it last?

    Priscilla, Priscilla
How'd you get him to yourself?
Between the whistle calls and Southern dolls
It's enough to put a home through hell
    Priscilla, Priscilla
    He's always in high demand
How do you or don't you get the love you want when everybody wants your man
It's a difficult thing being Queen to the King
    And I feel ya
    Priscilla

'Cause when they turn it on and slick back their hair
We turn around and the world's right there
Woman to woman, I'm starting to see
What happened to you is happenin' to me

    Priscilla, Priscilla
How'd you get him to yourself?

It's enough to put a home, a home through hell
    Priscilla, Priscilla

    Priscilla
  • This rollicking, heartfelt tune is about the tabloid scrutiny that Lambert has endured concerning her marriage to fellow Nashville star Blake Shelton. The Nicolle Galyon, Natalie Hemby and Jimmy Robbins penned song references Elvis Presley and his wife Priscilla, but also addresses the complications surrounding any high-profile relationship.

Lambert told Spin magazine: "I think it does it in a fun way, though. It happens, and it's happening a lot, lot more to Blake and I than ever before, and I thought it was a really smart take on how it happens, and I definitely don't want people to think I'm comparing us to Priscilla and Elvis in any stretch of the imagination."
  • Lambert told People Country that the song was inspired by a tabloid featuring a bogus cover story about Shelton and her. Natalie Hemby was at Lambert's Nashville condo, saw the magazine and asked the singer how she dealt with all the untrue gossip. "I told her I had no choice. It's part of the deal now, and I'm still adjusting," Lambert explained.

Two weeks later Hemby sent over this song she had co-written that was inspired by that very conversation.
  • So what does Priscilla Presley think of the song? It appears she is a fan, as Elvis's ex-wife took to Instagram to encourage Lambert, saying "@LisaPresley and I are listening to your song 'Priscilla.' Love it!"

    All That's Left
  • This throwback Dixie Hall and Tom T. Hall penned Western swing track is Lambert's rootsiest cut ever. She first heard the tune while listening to Bluegrass Junction on SiriusXMon SiriusXM as she drove home from a Beyoncé concert. "My husband (Blake Shelton) had the idea to do the song Western- swing-style," she told Rolling Stone. "I hate it when he's right."
  • Nashville Western swing ensemble The Time Jumpers guest on the song. "We decided to record it western swing and get cool harmonies, and have fiddles, which meant we had to have The Time Jumpers on it," said Lambert. "They're the most talented people in the whole world, in one band. It's ridiculous."
  • The Time Jumpers boasts Vince Gill as a member. "Miranda gets that world. She's a Texas girl. She gets what that music is," Gill told Rolling Stone. "I've always liked her because she's got spunk and she knows what she wants to do. She has that thing. It's driven inside of her and you can tell that when you're around her."

    Girls Lyrics

Imagine a fighter with a centerfold face
Comes from a long line of blue collars and lace
With a grip like reins to a steed
    And kisses for days
And imagine a winner holding pink champagne
Who still loves her daddy but changes her name
An overachiever, even she don't believe her own fame

    You can't change her mind
    (Even if you wanted to)
    You can always try
(She'll see through to you, she'll see through you)
If you think you're the only one she'll want in this world
Then you don't know nothin' 'bout Girls

Imagine your best friend and your worst enemy
Begs you to stay and then wishes you'd leave
Like Marilyn Monroe she can be who you want her to be

    You can't change her mind
    (Even if you wanted to)
    You can always try
(She'll through to you, she'll see through you)
If you think you're the only one she'll want in this world
Then you don't know nothin' 'bout girls

    Go on, go on
    Give her everything and more
    Love her all you want
    She was never yours

    You can't change her mind
    You can always try
If you think you're the only one
    She'll want in this world
Then you don't know nothin' about girls
If you think you're the only one
    She'll want in this world
    Then you don't know nothing
    No nothing
    'Bout girls

    Girls
  • Lambert was immediately attracted to this Nicolle Galyon, Natalie Hemby and Jimmy Robbins penned song. She told Billboard magazine: "I get pitched 100 'Gunpowder & Lead' and I'm like, 'give me something I can't write, I can write those all day long.' I like to hear things where I go, 'damn, I wish I'd written that.'"

"Natalie [Galyon] is a freak of nature, she's such a great writer," Lambert added "I heard ["Girls"] and it was like, 'oh my gosh, it's so true.' Girls, we're so complicated, can't live with us, can't live without us. I feel like that song says that so well, it's so beautiful. Every girl I play it for is like, 'that's me!' and that's what you want, it's so relatable and powerful. Even guys, 'oh yeah, that's my girl, that's my wife, that's my mom, that's my daughter.' I love songs that make you feel something and this one definitely does."

    Gravity Is a Bitch Lyrics

It's been your 20s feeling that you're walking on the ceiling
And you party like you're eight feet tall
You say work is for the birds
    Chasing dreams and mini skirts
    From here everything seem small

Then 30's come around and you finally feel the ground
Look around and maybe start planning
    For what the future holds
And though you're far from old, your moisturizer's been less time tanning

You're hanging over, but you're hanging in
You're starting to look like all of your friends
Conversations turnin' from rock n' roll
To kids and politics and how much money you owe

Got bags under your eyes, bigger hips and bigger thighs
You got places that you can't even itch
You can nip it, tuck it, squeeze it
But you're never gonna beat it
    'Cause gravity's a bitch

    Forty's kinda boring
And you spend your time ignoring the things you don't see so clear
Your reflection in the glass is gonna knock you on you ass
You wonder how the hell it get down here

    You're happy in your fifties
    Though things are kinda shifty
At sixty you find peace of mind
Go to bed at eight o'clock and comb your hair if you still got it
'Cause you're almost at the finish line

You're hanging over, but you're hanging in
You're starting to look like all of your friends
Conversations turnin' from rock n' roll
To kids and politics and how much money you owe

Got bags under your eyes, bigger hips and bigger thighs
You got places that you can't even itch
You can nip it, tuck it, squeeze it
But you're never gonna beat it

    Gravity Is a Bitch
  • This bluesy, boozy barroom romp finds Lambert addressing the difficulties of getting older and her struggles with weight. The Nashville star told US Weekly that she thinks expressing herself authentically through music is imperative to her listeners. "My fans expect me to lay it all out!" Lambert said. "I've always been happy with myself. But when I hit 30, I thought, It's not going to get easier. So I chose to get ahead of it. There's still nothing I love more than a bag of Cheetos, though!"
  • Lambert told Billboard magazine the story of the song: "I wrote this with my guitar player Scotty Wray, he's been with me since I was 17, he's in his 50s," she explained. "We came to me at a festival and said, 'hey, I got a title: Gravity's A Bitch.' I said, 'yes it is. Let's write it.' So we got in the bus and literally wrote it in like 30 minutes, it kind of wrote itself."

"He has these amazing melodies, he plays guitar so well, and I said, 'I know what it's like after 30, you tell me the rest, what do I have to look forward to?' We just started writing little things about every age," Lambert continued. "It was fun, it's one of those things you have to face, everybody knows it's gonna happen. That's why there's Botox and Spanx, I guess."

I ain't gonna get dressed up, just to be your clown
Ain't gonna paint this pretty face, like you paint the town
I ain't wastin' good mascara, just to watch it runnin' down
I ain't gonna get dressed up, just to be your clown

I could spend an hour on my makeup and my hair
Shoes to tall, dress to small, and lacy underwear
Go down to the bar, and buy myself a drink
Dangle there all perfect, like a puppet on a string

I ain't gonna get dressed up, just to be your clown
Ain't gonna paint this pretty face, like you paint the town
I ain't wastin' good mascara, just to watch it runnin' down
I ain't gonna get dressed up, just to be your clown

You got girls that sing and dance, I hear ones an acrobat,
You got 'em swinging from the chandelier, well honey I don't swing like that
The main attraction's leaving, let the side show pay the rent
Take this diamond back and you'll be Two Rings Shy of the big top tent

I ain't gonna get dressed up, just to be your clown
Ain't gonna paint this pretty face, like you paint the town
I ain't wastin' good mascara, just to watch it runnin' down
I ain't gonna get dressed up, just to be your clown

I ain't gonna get dressed up, just to be your clown
Tiptoe 'cross the tight-rope, till you turn me upside down
Cut the cable, pull the net, just to let me hit the ground
I ain't gonna get dressed up, just to be your clown

  • Lambert gave specific instructions to producer Frank Liddell regarding this track. "When we wrote this song," she told Billboard, "I told Frank I wanted it to sound like the circus, like literally we need to go to a circus somewhere and just record sounds."

    Two kids from Tacoma
    In a '72 Nova,
No pill and barely old enough to drink,
Learned the ropes and tested science,
    Started pentecostal riots,
In just five minutes behind the rolling rink,
    In the backseat brings

The American dream on a shoestring,
First you grow it, then you show it,
Give a good push just like a Brady,
Say you'll love 'em 'till your eighty,
Too soon to be a mother and father,
But too late for the alma mater,
Yeah it's always in the water
    Babies Makin' Babies

    Between diplomas and the diapers,
    They become couch quarter finders,
Savin' up for a Maytag microwave,
Oh but all has been forgiven,
On the day the water christen,
The best thing that could have happened by mistake,

The American dream on a shoestring,
First you grow it then you show it,
Give a good push just like a Brady,
Say you'll love 'em 'till your eighty,
Too soon to be a mother and father,
But too late for the alma mater,
Yeah it's always in the water
    Babies makin' babies

Well it's a tried and true equation,
    Maintains a small town population,
That turns us all into a family,

The American dream on a shoestring,
First you grow it then you show it,
Give a good push just like a Brady,
Say you'll love 'em 'till you're eighty,
Too soon to be a mother and father,
But too late for the alma mater,
Yeah its always in the water,
    Babies makin' babies
