Off The Wall Lyrics

When the world is on your shoulder
Gotta straighten up your act and boogie down
If you can't hang with the feelin'
Then there ain't no room for you this part of town
'Cause we're the party people night and day
Livin' crazy that's the only way

[Chorus]
So tonight gotta leave that nine to five upon the shelf
And just enjoy yourself
Groove, let the madness in the music get to you
Life ain't so bad at all
If you live it Off The Wall
Life ain't so bad at all (live life off the wall)
Live your life off the wall (live it off the wall)

You can shout out all you want to
'Cause there ain't no sin in folks all getting loud
If you take the chance and do it
There there ain't no one who's gonna put you down
'Cause we're the party people night and day
Livin' crazy that's the only way

[Chorus]

Do what you want to do
There ain't no rules it's up to you (ain't no rules it's all up to you)
It's time to come alive
And party on right through the night (all right)

Gotta hide your inhibitions
Gotta let that fool loose deep inside your soul
Want to see an exhibition
Better do it now before you get too old
'Cause we're the party people night and day
Livin' crazy that's the only way

[Chorus]

So tonight gotta leave that nine to five upon the shelf
And just enjoy yourself
Come on and groove (yeah) and let the madness in the music get to you
Life ain't so bad at all
If you live it off the wall

So tonight gotta leave that nine to five upon the shelf
And just enjoy yourself
Come on and groove (yeah) and let the madness in the music get to you
Life ain't so bad at all
If you live it off the wall

Off The Wall Song Chart
  • This was written by Rod Temperton, who was with the band Heatwave and wrote many dance classics. With the success of this, Jackson's producer, Quincy Jones, had Temperton write more songs for Jackson. He also wrote "Rock With You" and "Thriller" for the future King of Pop.
  • The Off The Wall album sold over 10 million copies and make Michael Jackson the first solo artist with four US Top 10 hits from the same album. In addition to the title track, "Rock With You" (#1), "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough" (#1), and "She's Out Of My Life" (#10) also made the Top 10.
  • Jackson's appearance started to change shortly after the album was released, as he started his run of plastic surgery. By the time Off The Wall was reissued in 2001, Jackson looked nothing like his former self, and the cover used just the image of his feet. Here's a before and after look at Jackson against the wall .
  • Can you even count the honors this album received? Rolling Stone's "500 greatest albums of all time," #68. NARM's "definitive 200 albums of all time," #80. Inducted into the Grammy hall of fame, 2008. Won 3 American Music Awards, one Billboard Music Award, and as mentioned, one Grammy. Rave reviews sang its praises, then and now. Multi-platinum seller in Australia, Mexico, New Zealand, and the US.
  • In the lyrics, "9 to 5" represents the canonical office work hours. Already a popular expression in the '70s and '80s, it was often used in songs to delineate the workday slog from the fun and excitement the evening offered (see: "Lady Marmalade"). The working-class comedy film 9 to 5, released in 1980, made it even more popular. These days, flexible schedules and overtime have made the hours far less typical.
  • MJ trivia time: Can you name all of Michael Jackson's siblings? They are (in birth order) Rebbie, Jackie, Tito, Jermaine, La Toya, Marlon, Randy, and Janet - Janet being the only one junior to Michael. Here's a mnemonic for those names: "Red jam tastes just like my raspberry jelly jam." OK, that's silly, but you'd remember it now, right?

    Rock With You Lyrics

    Girl, close your eyes
Let that rhythm get into you
    Don't try to fight it
There ain't nothing that you can do
    Relax your mind
Lay back and groove with mine
    You gotta feel that heat
And we can ride the boogie
    Share that beat of love

I want to Rock With You (all night)
    Dance you into day (sunlight)
I want to rock with you (all night)
    Rock the night away

    Out on the floor
There ain't nobody there but us
    Girl when you dance
There's a magic that must be love
    Just take it slow
Cause we got so far to go
    You gotta feel that heat
And we can ride the boogie
    Share that beat of love

I want to rock with you (all night)
    Dance you into day (sunlight)
I want to rock with you (all night)
    Rock the night away

And when the groove is dead and gone (yeah)
    You know that love survives
So we can rock forever, on

I want to rock with you
I want to groove with you

I want to rock (all night) with you girl (sunlight)
Rock with you, rock with you girl (yeah) (all night)
    Dance the night away

I want to rock with you (yeah) (all night)
    Rock you into day (sunlight)
I want to rock with you (all night)
    Rock the night away

Feel the heat feel the heat
    Rock you into day (sunlight)
I want to rock-rock the night away.

    Rock With You Song Chart
  • This was written by Rod Temperton, formerly a member of Disco group Heatwave. Jackson's producer, Quincy Jones, convinced Temperton to write some songs for Jackson.
  • This was the first song Rod Temperton wrote for Jackson. He would write many others for him, including "Off The Wall" and "Thriller."
  • The original title was "I Want To Eat You Up," but it was quickly changed to fit Jackson's image.
  • This was Michael Jackson's third #1 on the Billboard Hot 100; the first two were "Ben," and "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough."
  • This song was part of the soundtrack for the video game Michael Jackson: The Experience. That was the 2010 game which hearkened back to his Moonwalker phase (you can see it right on the cover art), and hence to the 1989 arcade game Michael Jackson's Moonwalker. And hoo-boy, we just gave every old-skool MJ fan a nostalgia flush!
  • Especially when you watch the video, it dawns on you that this was a Disco song... in 1979, when Disco was supposed to be sleeping with the fishes (it wouldn't be right to say 'deader than disco'). In fact, it even has some Soul overtones. Jackson was well-suited for the dance beats of Disco, and was able to work in the genre when it was well past its prime.

You'll also find the video in the collections Video Greatest Hits - HIStory, Number Ones and Michael Jackson's Vision.
  • Bruce Gowers directed the music video, which was shot the same day as the clip for "She's Out of My Life." Gowers, who also directed Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody," remembered working with a tight budget to create the smoky promo, with Jackson glimmering in a sequined suit. He told Rolling Stone: "In those days they were done for peanuts. Absolute peanuts. I think about all we could afford was the laser. This one was probably about $3,000. If you look at it, there's nothing there but a laser and Michael Jackson. When we did this, this was the start of his solo career. He was very, very timid, very quiet, very unassuming. Really nice, he's an absolute professional, even in those days.

It was filmed on a little stage in LA called the 800 Stage, a little stage that we got cheap because we were shooting quite a lot of music videos. There was minimal editing as well, because obviously in those days editing costs money. It was about $350 per machine per hour. If you were using two playbacks and one record, that was a lot of money Everything was rented, trust me: the cameras, the stage, the Duvetyne drop, the smoke."

She's Out of My Life Lyrics

    She's Out of My Life
    She's out of my life
And I don't know whether to laugh or cry
I don't know whether to live or die
And it cuts like a knife
    She's out of my life

    It's out of my hands
    It's out of my hands
To think for two years she was here
And I took her for granted I was so cavalier
Now the way that it stands
    She's out of my hands

So I've learned that love's not possession
And I've learned that love won't wait
Now I've learned that love needs expression
    But I learned too late

    She's out of my life
    She's out of my life
    Damned indecision and cursed pride
Kept my love for her locked deep inside
And it cuts like a knife
    She's out of my life

She's Out of My Life Song Chart
  • This heartfelt ballad was written by Tom Bahler. Though he dated Karen Carpenter (who would die of complications from anorexia in 1983), the song was not about the eventual demise of their romance. Bahler explained it was actually inspired by his breakup with his previous girlfriend, Rhonda Rivera.
  • Off the Wall producer Quincy Jones had been saving the track for Frank Sinatra but wanted to introduce Jackson to more mature themes in his music. The song would become famous for the King of Pop's tearful performance. Jones remembered: "She's Out of My Life, I'd been carrying around for about three years - you can feel the pain in it, you know. And I held on to it and finally something said 'this is the right moment to give it to Michael'.

And when we recorded it with Michael, I know it was an experience he'd never even thought about to sing in a song, 'cause it's a very mature emotion. And he cried at the end of every take, you know. We recorded about - I don't know - 8-11 takes, and every one at the end, he just cried, and I said 'hey - that's supposed to be, leave it on there.'"
  • Bruce Gowers directed the stark music video that put Jackson's emotions front and center. He told Rolling Stone: "What you're seeing on there is one complete take, it was shot multi-camera. [This and 'Rock With You'] were both shot on the same day. I think we shot one at like three in the afternoon and one at 5… Very emotional he was in that. I was worried that he was actually going to break down and cry – which would have probably been a bit wonderful if we got some tears rolling down the face. That almost happened but not quite."
  • In his Moonwalk autobiography, Jackson explained that the song forced him to confront feelings of loneliness, of being "so rich in some experiences while being poor in moments of true joy."
