In Repair Lyrics

Well it's good to know that you'll be okay
I've been waiting for this and I'll be there
To sit while you pray no one's blaming me I'm
Not supposed to wait when they open up your heart

[Chorus]
I have been good I understood and
Like a machine they'll fix you from
The start I'm In Repair the life that
We share I know that I'll be lost
But we are always in repair

And it's good to know that you'll drive away
From this car crash nightmare and
I'll be there to help you again there's
No danger we're just killing time
Again until they order up new parts

[Chorus]

In Repair
  • This is based on the ideas and writings of futurist author Ray Kurzweil, who writes about AI (artificial intelligence) and its place in human society. Kurzweil suggests that the AI machines will "embody human qualities, claim to be human, and we will believe them." Kurzweil's voice opens the beginning of the song.
  • Kurzweil's book Spiritual Machines is where the band got the name for this album. The book was suggested by then guitarist Mike Turner. (thanks, Lorne - Toronto, Canada, for above 2)

    4 AM Lyrics

I walked around my good intentions
And found that there were none
I blame my father for the wasted years, we hardly talked
I never thought I would forget this hate

Then a phone call made me realize I'm wrong
And if I don't make it known that I've loved you all along
Just like sunny days that we ignore
Because we're all dumb and jaded
And, and I hope to God I figure out what's wrong

I walked around my room not thinking
    Just sinking in this box
I blame myself for being too much, like somebody else
I never thought I would just bend this way

Then a phone call made me realize I'm wrong
And if I don't make it known that I've loved you all along
Just like sunny days that we ignore
Because we're all dumb and jaded
And, and I hope to God I figure out what's wrong

And I hope to God I figure out what's wrong
And I hope to God I figure out what's wrong

If I don't make it known that I've loved you all along
Just like sunny days that we ignore
Because we're all dumb and jaded
And I hope to God I figure out what's wrong

And if I don't make it known that I've loved you all along

    4 AM
  • The title has two meanings. The song was written at 4 in the morning, and lead singer Raine Maida's father's initials are A.M., so it's "For A.M."
  • From an article in the Edmonton Journal, February 9, 2000: "Put Raine Maida on a stage in front of thousands of fans - even those of angry Scottish variety - and he relishes the experience. Put Maida on that same stage in front of his father, and the singer would rather escape into the wings. It doesn't matter if Maida's father is enveloped by hundreds of others - the devilish, brooding frontman of Our Lady Peace still doesn't feel at peace with his dad around. Despite six years of touring, Maida only discovered his discomfort last week, a few days after the launch of Our Lady Peace's national tour for Happiness...Is Not A Fish That You Can Catch. Following the moody rock band's show in Toronto, Maida knew he wasn't happy with his performance, but couldn't quite put his finger on the reason. It finally dawned on him during the band's subsequent gig in Montreal. "Every time I have to play Toronto, I know my dad is in the crowd and it basically destroys me," says Maida. "This time, I felt like I couldn't even speak properly. I just realized (my discomfort) after the show in Montreal, because it was such a great show. It felt so much more comfortable. I don't know why I'm telling you this.... It was a little bit of an epiphany for me, I guess." (thanks, Todd - Flin Flon, Canada)

    One Man Army Lyrics

    Take these plastic people
Read their lips, now let it linger
Is there anything that makes them sound sincere?
    Tightly hold your hand
Take a deep breath, give them the finger
    Are you worried
That your thoughts are not quite clear?
    (Twitch)
    Overlooked, unfit appearance

    I remember falling
    I remember marching
    Like a One Man Army
    Through the blaze
    I know I'm coughing
    I believe in something
I don't want to remember falling
    For your lies

    Unbutton your clothes
Undress your soul, show them your vigor
Are those inhibitions easiest to fear?
    Take this gasoline tin
Head up high, walk like a winner
Let the bare feet be the last sound that they hear

    (Twitch)
    Overlooked, unfit appearance

    I remember falling
    I remember marching
    Like a one man army
    Through the blaze
    I know I'm coughing
    I believe in something
I don't want to remember falling
    For your lies

    Falling
    I remember falling
    I remember marching
    Like a one man army
    Through the blaze
    I know I'm coughing
    I believe in something
I don't want to remember falling

  • Lead singer Raine Maida: "'One Man Army' is about the struggle for individuality. It's about finding the courage to strip naked and set fire to all your inhibitions. It's about cleansing yourself of all the people and things that suffocate your individuality." (thanks, Chrissy - Vancouver, Canada)
  • During a free performance at Kent State University for their "Flash Fest," Maida told the crowd that this song was about an elementary school student who was picked on and bullied a lot, so he set fire to his school. (thanks, Dave - Kent, OH)

    Clumsy Lyrics

    Throw away the radio suitcase
    That keeps you awake
Hide the telephone in case, you realize that sometimes you're not okay
You level off but its not all right now
    You need to understand
    There's nothing strange about this
You need to know your friends
I'll be waving my hand watching you drown
    Watching you scream
    Quiet or loud
    Maybe you should sleep
Maybe you just need a friend
    As Clumsy as you've been
    There's no one laughing
You will be safe in here
Throw away this very old shoelace that tripped you again
    Try and shrug it off
    It's only skin now
    You need to understand
    There's nothing fake about this
You need to let me in
    I'm watching you

    Clumsy
  • Lead singer Raine Maida said: "There's a connection between the song 'Clumsy' and it being the title of the album. There's a line in the song that says: 'I'll be waving my hand/watching you drown/watching you scream', it's about seeing something but not seeing it for what it really is. It's about decisions. That image of 'waving your hand/watching you drown,' is about seeing someone in the water, they're waving at you, and you're just waving back, not realizing that they're drowning. Or you think they're drowning, but they're just waving at you. It's those weird situations where you just take something at face value, but you can be so wrong. You have to look deeper and question things. I think it's something that too many people don't do these days. We're so inundated with the f--king media, and you just believe it. How many times, not just to focus on us, have we read an interview or an article where we've been completely misquoted? We're just some small band, when you think about some of the major players and you really have to question how true it all is." (thanks, Chrissy - Vancouver, Canada)
  • In 2012, Our Lady Peace lead singer Raine Maida told us that this song still felt important to him, even though it was over 15 years old. Maida elaborated by stating, "I have to say, for whatever reason, most of the stuff that I've written about seems to still have a lot of relevance to me."

Maida says he's asked all the time whether or not he gets sick of playing the same hit songs (such as "Clumsy") over and over again. The answer is always a defiant "No." Maida explained, "There are songs that we'll never play just because they don't feel relevant; they don't feel authentic to us, which is fine, because I think every band probably has some of those songs. But we're not one of those bands that aren't going to play one of our hit singles just to spite people or whatever. That's just not in our thinking. We don't operate that way. So we're lucky, I guess."
  • Our Lady Peace frontman Raine Maida said performing the Clumsy album in its entirety on tour in 2010 seemed "a little scattered to me." Maida says there were a few songs on that album where he felt OLP missed the mark, but added "But hey, that's life, you know?"

    Superman's Dead Lyrics

Do you worry that you're not liked
    How long till you break
    You're happy cause you smile
But how much can you fake
An ordinary boy an ordinary name
But ordinary's just not good enough today

    Alone I'm thinking
    Why is superman dead
    Is it in my head
    We'll just laugh instead

You worry about the weather and
Whether or not you should hate
Are you worried about your faith
    Kneel down and obey
    You're happy you're in love
    You need someone to hate
An ordinary girl an ordinary waist
But ordinary's just not good enough today

    Alone I'm thinking
    Why is superman dead
    Is it in my head
    We'll just laugh instead

Doesn't anybody ever know that the world's a subway

    Superman's Dead
  • In 1997, Our Lady Peace frontman Raine Maida wrote this song about how hard it is to be a kid growing up surrounded by media, TV images, and outside pressures to look or feel a certain way. When we caught up with Maida in 2012, he thought the song felt more relevant than ever before. Maida explained, "That's probably the genius of that song, not by any part on me, but just the fact that I think the trend has gotten even tougher for kids these days. It seems that if you talk about the world going faster, my analogy back then was the subway. Now it's like we've hit light speed with ADD and the technology. I mean, just to stay focused for 20 minutes, I can hardly do it. You're just inundated. Our senses are on overload, for sure."
  • Lead singer Raine Maida said of this song: "It's just about how hard it is for kids to grow up today. They're inundated with the media and images and cliques they try to have to fit into. Two images that are really strong for me lyrically are 'Ordinary's just not good enough today' and when I think of kids today, I would never think of a group of eight year olds going out to a baseball park and throwing the ball around. It doesn't happen anymore. I have a nine year old brother; he's either inside playing Nintendo or staying up late on a school night to watch Beavis And Butthead. And you juxtapose that against the old Superman, on the black and white series. He was also a real hero, good values, strong willed, a gentleman, but I think Beavis And Butthead wins today." (thanks, Chrissy - Vancouver, Canada)
