True Trans Soul Rebel Lyrics

True Trans Soul Rebel
  • This is a track from Transgender Dysphoria Blues, a concept album where the Against Me! frontwoman formerly known as Tom Gabel shares her rebirth as Laura Jane Grace. She told NME regarding the song: "I tried to write as if I was someone else on this track, about when you're starting to experiment with going out and presenting as female... But you have nowhere to f---ing go because you don't want to be seen out by friends."
  • The song was performed live by Against Me! For the first time at the Ogden Theatre, Denver on May 30, 2012. Grace had publicly come out as transgender earlier that month, announcing plans to transition to living as a woman.
  • An acoustic version of the song was released as a Double A-sided single with "F---MYLIFE666" on July 12, 2013. The artwork features Jame "Buffalo Bill" Gumb, a character from the 1991 movie The Silence of the Lambs, who was often wrongly described as transgender.

  • This song finds Against Me's transgender frontwoman Laura Jane Grace detailing her attempts at camouflaging herself as a heterosexual man. She told NME: "Being in a punk band, more and more I'm in a situation where it's a bunch of dudes sitting around making homophobic comments, or being sexist or racist, and I would find myself laughing along and feeling disgusted with myself afterwards. I hope it makes people uncomfortable."
  • Grace expanded on the song's meaning to Spin magazine: "That song, in particular, was inspired by a night where I wasn't necessarily hanging out with punks," he said. "It's more self-criticism of knowing that, okay, I'm a transsexual, but no one else in this circle of people here knows that, and everyone else is laughing at faggots and everyone's being homophobic, and you're laughing along, too, and you're lying to yourself."

"It didn't necessarily have anything to do with punk rock," he added," but at the same time, just being that I've played in a punk band for as long as I have, a lot of my experiences, of course, are going to be around that world or are related to that, and I have seen an unfortunate amount of, be it sexism or homophobia or whatever, in the punk-rock world, where people are like, 'I'm not really racist, but here's a racist joke' or 'I'm not really homophobic, but here's a homophobic joke.' And it's a shame to laugh along."

  • Transgender Dysphoria Blues deals with gender dysphoria, following the coming out of Against Me's frontwoman Laura Jane Grace as transgender. This song finds her reflecting on the effect it had on her wife, Heather.
  • Laura Grace told NME: "'F--- my Life' is something that my friend Pope, who died, used to say a lot of the time. And this song is really about my relationship with my wife in a lot of ways."

  • Against Me! frontwoman Laura Jane Grace wrote this song for her daughter, Evelyn, who was born in 2009. "It's about mortality," she told NME. "And realizing that all the things in your life are temporary."
  • Laura Jane Grace expanded on the song to Kerrang!: "When you have a kid, all the clichés are true. It changes you. Your perspective changes immediately, and time starts to move in a different way. You have these moments of realisation about who you are, where you are in your life, your age in comparison to your parents... It's a real head trip."

"Having a kid of my own way, please see things from so many different angles, and going through having my daughter (Evelyn) while accepting gender dysphoria and dealing with it, it really take me a sense of my own mortality. It may be realise that death is real, and obviously all of us are going to confront it in our own time. It's part of life that I'm going to die someday and my daughter is going to die some day, and I hope I die before my daughter."
  • The black-and-white animated video starkly visualizes the song's themes. The clip was directed by the Verona, Italy-based animator Margherita Ballarin.

    Black Me Out Lyrics

    Black Me Out
  • Laura Jane Grace told NME: "It's an angry song, 'Write me off, f---ing forget about me.' It's really just a 'f--- off' to negative people. The 'f--- you' attitude is what attracted me to punk when I was 13 years old."
  • Do you hear a Bruce Springsteen influence in this song? Bruce does. He told NPR: "'Black Me Out,' it's a fantastic song, you know. And so, any time where you feel you may have dropped a seed or two that someone picked up in any way is, it's just a pleasure. I mean it's like, 'Oh yeah, I did that little part of my work well,' in that this was an assistance and someone went and made something beautiful of their own or crazy of their own about it or whatever, however it comes out."
  • Grace explained the song's meaning to Spin magazine: "It's an angry song," he said, "and it's about feeling like you have certain relationships in your life where you have to fake the person that you are and be inauthentic and compromise yourself to people you work with or people you see out at a bar who corner you — who make you the kind of person that you aren't, really — and feeling like you're so angry that you just want to be like blacked out from someone's existence, like, 'F---ing forget about me, don't think about me anymore, I do not exist to you anymore.' That kind of feeling."
