I'm Not Afraid Lyrics

I'm Not Afraid
  • One half of a Double A single along with Frank's duet with daughter Nancy Sinatra "Life's a Trippy Thing," this song flopped when it was released in 1971. However, the singer's son, Frank Sinatra Jr., told Mojo magazine that the Jacques Brel, Gérard Jouannest and Rod McKuen-penned tune is very much underrated. "This for me is a great song," he said. "The arranger was a man called Lenny Hayton. This never became a hit, unfortunately. It's a thoroughly sophisticated love song. It is not the usual mundane love song lyric. It's a very, very good piece of writing by a man who's been forgotten, named Rod McKuen. The music is by Jack Brel and Gérard Jouannest, but McEwan's lyrics."

Sinatra continued: "Years ago, the concert pianist Arthur Rubinstein said, 'Chopin's music speaks directly to the heart of the people.' Certain lyrics do exactly that and Sinatra, as an interpreter of those lyrics, did that same thing. McKuen was a poet. A beautiful sadness."

    Animales Lyrics

Dejaste en mi cama tu aroma y sudor
No olvido el día que perdimos el pudor
Quiero que hagamos el amor como Animales
Similar a aquella noche cuando fuimos indomables
    Ra pa pa pa pa
    Agresivo y salvaje
    Ra pa pa pa pa
    Enfermitos incurables

Yo no te dije ni una frase de amor
Y no digo que sea ilógico
Pero esa noche tu cuerpo pidió calor
    Sin romance nada bíblico
No te lleve serenata a tu ventana
Ni escribí mil poesías en bachata
Solo te vi, me miraste así
Nos hicimos sentir un ratito feliz
Quiero que hagamos el amor como animales
Similar a aquella noche cuando fuimos indomables
    Ra pa pa pa pa
    Agresivo y salvaje
    Ra pa pa pa pa
    Enfermitos incurables

    Romeo
    It's me yo, the CEO
    Dame beso, yo necesito
    Dominicana, Puerto Rico
Fly me out where is warm, hace frío
And you can hit it like José Canseco
Yeah, and I'ma give you this hit caliente
But Ima need a big sweet Presidente
Baby if you like it rough
Give it to me toda la noche
Por favor baby rip me right out of my Dolce
    Gabanna, como animales
    Baby, como animales

    Ven a mí
    No arruinemos el momento
    No hay tiempo pa palabras
Que la noche se haga larga (larga, larga)
Quiero que hagamos el amor como animales
Similar a aquella noche cuando fuimos indomables
    Ra pa pa pa pa
    Agresivo y salvaje
    Ra pa pa pa pa

    Don't Worry Baby Lyrics

Well its been building up inside of me
For oh I don't know how long
    I don't know why
    But I keep thinking
    Something's bound to go wrong

But she looks in my eyes
    And makes me realize
And she says "Don't Worry Baby"
    Don't worry baby
    Don't worry baby
    Everything will turn out alright

    Don't worry baby
    Don't worry baby
    Don't worry baby

I guess I should've kept my mouth shut
When I started to brag about my car
But I can't back down now because
I pushed the other guys too far

    She makes me come alive
And makes me want to drive
When she says "Don't worry baby"
    Don't worry baby
    Don't worry baby
    Everything will turn out alright

    Don't worry baby
    Don't worry baby
    Don't worry baby

She told me "Baby, when you race today
Just take along my love with you
And if you knew how much I loved you
Baby nothing could go wrong with you"

Oh what she does to me
When she makes love to me
And she says "Don't worry baby"
    Don't worry baby
    Don't worry baby
    Everything will turn out alright

    Don't worry baby

    Don't Worry Baby
  • This was conceived as a followup to the Ronettes' #2 hit "Be My Baby." When he heard the Ronettes' song on the radio, Brian Wilson wondered aloud if he could match it. Wilson's wife Marilyn reassured him, saying, "Don't worry, baby." Wilson remembered it when it came time to write songs with his DJ friend Roger Christian.
  • Brian Wilson told Goldmine in 2011 regarding this track: "I wrote that with Roger Christian and it took me two days to write it. I started out with the verse idea and then wrote the chorus. It was a very simple and beautiful song. It's a really heart and soul song, I really did feel that in my heart. Some say it's about a car and others say it's about a girl, who's right? It's both. It's about a car and a woman."
  • Philip Lambert, author of Inside The Music of Brian Wilson, said of the similarities between this song and "Be My Baby": "They're in the same key - E Major - and they start the same. The phrase structure is the same, the chord progressions are almost the same, the melodies are almost the same." Lambert points out that the key change in this song is an unexpected touch that helps make the song memorable. The drums at the beginning are the same rhythm as "Be My Baby."
  • This song was recorded in two 8-hour sessions. Brian Wilson often used the famous Los Angeles session musicians on his songs, but this one was mostly in the family: Brian played piano and bass, Carl Wilson played guitar, and Dennis Wilson played the drums.
  • The Beach Boys used as the B-side of their hit, "I Get Around."
  • B.J. Thomas covered this in 1977. His version hit #17 in the US.
  • This song was used in the Drew Barrymore film Never Been Kissed. It also appeared in Good Morning Vietnam.
  • Billy Joel sang this at the "Tribute to Brian Wilson" concert that aired on July 4, 2001. (thanks, Jim - Melbourne, FL)
  • Weezer frontman Rivers Cuomo covered this in 1993. Fifteen years later he included his version on his solo Alone II album. He told Billboard magazine that this song was immensely influential on his songwriting. Cuomo explained: "I discovered the Beach Boys around that time in 1992-93, and to help me learn how to write those kinds of melodies and harmonies and chord progressions, I would learn their songs and record my own versions of them more like Weezer-style, with distorted guitars."
Cuomo added: "I love Brian Wilson's melody when he's saying, 'Well, it's been building up inside of me for oh, I don't know how long.' I love the lyrical innocence. It's just like a straightforward pop song, singing about a girl as opposed to something like the Pixies, where the lyrics were pretty abstract. And I love the big harmonies in the chorus -- actually five-part vocal harmonies -- and I carefully transcribed them in my bedroom on my tape player. But then I added the element of the modern crunchy guitar sound. And that's what really helped me figure out what I wanted to do as a songwriter and a performer in Weezer."
  • Al Jardine told Mojo magazine June 2012 that this was his favorite Beach Boys recording session. He recalled: "(Engineer) Chuck Britz got such a great sound on that song; the drums, the singing, the clicky sound on the Fender Precision bass. There's something about the way the track sat. Just about everything about it was an era-change for us."

    You Are My Sunshine Lyrics

The other night dear, as I lay sleeping
I dreamed I held you in my arms
When I awoke, dear, I was mistaken
So I hung my head and I cried.

    [Chorus]
You Are My Sunshine, my only sunshine
You make me happy when skies are gray
You'll never know dear, how much I miss you
Please don't take my sunshine away

I'll always love you and make you happy,
If you will only say the same.
But if you leave me to love another,
You'll regret it all some day:

    [Chorus]

You told me once, dear, you really loved me
And no one else could come between.
    But not you've left me and love another;
You have shattered all my dreams:

    You Are My Sunshine
  • This was written by Jimmie Davis and his guitar player Charles Mitchell, who first recorded it in 1940, a year after both the Pine Ridge Boys and the The Rice Brothers Gang introduced it (some historians claim Paul Rice actually wrote the tune and sold it to Davis). Davis was a prolific songwriter who became Governor of Louisiana a few years after.
  • Bing Crosby was the first to have a hit with this song. His version went to #20 in the US in 1941.
  • This was sung on the "It Was a GOOD Life" episode of The Twilight Zone by a neighbor of a supernatural little boy -- before the boy changes the neighbor into a jack-in-the-box and buries him in a cornfield.
  • The B-side was Hank Williams' signature song, "Your Cheatin' Heart." (thanks, Brad Wind - Miami, FL, for above 3)

Goes cruising just as fast as she can now

Well the girls can't stand her
'Cause she walks, looks, and drives like an ace now

She makes the Indy 500 look like a Roman chariot race now
(You look like an ace now, you look like an ace)
A lotta guys try to catch her
But she leads them on a wild goose chase now
(You drive like an ace now, you drive like an ace)

And she'll have fun, fun, fun
Till her daddy takes the t-bird away
(Fun, fun, fun till her daddy takes the t-bird away)

    Well you knew all along
That your dad was gettin' wise to you now
(You shouldn't have lied now, you shouldn't have lied)
And since he took your set of keys
You've been thinking that your fun is all through now
(You shouldn't have lied now, you shouldn't have lied)

But you can come along with me
'Cause we gotta a lot of things to do now

  • In this classic American song about girls and cars, a rebellious daughter borrows her dad's Ford Thunderbid, claiming she's going to the library to study (yeah, right). Instead, she uses it to show up other drivers. Her dad eventually finds out and takes his T-Bird back, but she retaliates by running off with someone who fell in love with her after watching her drive.

The song was written by Brian Wilson of The Beach Boys, with some of the lyrics by lead singer Mike Love, as he was much more attuned to teen culture than his cousin Brian. Love told us : "I suggested that we write a song about a girl who borrows her dad's car and goes cruising, rather than to the library, 'like she told her old man, now.' So I came up with the concept and the lyrics, and Brian went in and recorded the track. And I even told him, it's got to start like a Chuck Berry song with a guitar lead intro, which Carl Wilson supplied. And so that's how that came to pass."

Until some legal wrangling sorted out the songwriting credits in the '90s, this song was solely credited to Brian Wilson. As Love tells it, the reason he wasn't credited on this and some other Beach Boys songs he helped write was because Murry Wilson (father of band members Brian, Carl and Dennis), administrated the publishing rights and left him off the credits.
  • There have been many rumors about the identity of the girl in the song, but when we spoke with Beach Boys lead singer Mike Love, he said: "As far as I knew, there was no particular person that was the inspiration for that song. It was more generic. Because, what kid, when they get their driver's license, doesn't want to borrow the family car and they go cruisin' through the hamburger stand, or they say they need to go to the library, but who knows? [Laughing] Sometimes other thoughts become more attractive."

Here are the most common stories we've heard about who the girl is supposedly about:
A girl Beach Boys drummer Dennis Wilson was dating. She came from a rich family in Palos Verdes, Los Angeles and used to tell her father she was going to study at the library and needed his Ford Thunderbird to get there. Instead of driving to the library, she would hang out with Dennis at his apartment. Dennis would say, "We'll have fun till her daddy takes the T'bird away," and this became the hook.

Shirley Johnson England, whose father, Howard, owned the Utah radio station KNAK. Shirley claims that she used to borrow her dad's T-Bird, and one day got caught taking it to the drive-in instead of the library. The Beach Boys spent a lot of time at the station for promotional appearances, and when they heard this story, they wrote the song about Shirley.
  • The Wilsons' father Murray had very conservative values and felt this song was immoral. Murray served as their manager, and by many accounts was very controlling. He didn't get his way on this one, and was removed as manager a few months later. (thanks, Bertrand - Paris, France)
  • The Beach Boys were on tour in Australia and when they returned to the States, Beatlemania had come to town. This was the Beach Boys' next hit, and while now regarded as a classic, at the time it was almost eclipsed by the Mop Tops. (thanks, Jo - Sheffield, England)
  • The intro was copied from Chuck Berry's "Johnny B Goode." Brian Wilson and the Beach Boys were heavily influenced by Chuck Berry. (thanks, Brandon - Seattle, WA)
  • In 1996 the British rock band Status Quo did a version of the song with The Beach Boys. Despite peaking at #24 on the UK charts it wasn't played on BBC Radio 1. An angry Status Quo threatened legal proceedings against the national station, claiming they were wrong to not playlist the song in spite of it making the Top 40.

Lennon and McCartney added all of the crazy vocals in April 1969. Finally, it was released as the B-side of the "Let It Be" single in 1970. (thanks, Adrian - Wilmington, DE)

  • George Harrison wrote this song and also played guitar, organ and bass on the track; it was one of the few times he included a guitar solo for himself. Regarding the words, opposites were a common theme in Harrison's lyrics: right/wrong, short/tall. He explained: "I started the chord sequences on the piano, which I don't really play, and then began writing ideas for the words from various opposites... Again, it's the duality of things - yes no, up down, left right, right wrong, etcetera."
  • This was released as the B-side of "The Ballad of John and Yoko."
  • The album cover to the single echoes the album cover for Hey Jude in a clever way. On the single version for "The Ballad of John and Yoko," John and Yoko are seated on a pair of statues, while the rest of the group, looking rather forlorn, stand in the background. On the cover of Hey Jude, all four Beatles stand indoors in a classical setting flanked by statues - one of which off to the side wears Yoko's hat.
  • Even fans argue to this day whether that's George's or Paul's bass work. The various editing sessions in the studio muddy the waters quite a bit. To wit: During the Let It Be sessions, the group did two recordings, one with Harrison and piano accompaniment, and one with the whole group plus Billy Preston. They rehearsed the song eight more times for these sessions, and there's some bootlegs of these tapes out there. Then a complicated hail of edits on different tracks ensued when they actually went to record "Old Brown Shoe," with Harrison replacing two guitar tracks with his own and wiping Lennon's rhythm guitar in favor of a Hammond organ. Remember that this was towards the end of the Beatles' career, and there were growing creative fractures in the band. For the record, Harrison told a Creem interview that that's his bass.

You say you want a Revolution
    Well, you know
We all want to change the world
You tell me that it's evolution
    Well, you know
We all want to change the world
But when you talk about destruction
Don't you know that you can count me out
Don't you know it's gonna be all right
    All right, all right

You say you got a real solution
    Well, you know
We'd all love to see the plan
You ask me for a contribution
    Well, you know
    We're doing what we can
    But when you want money
For people with minds that hate
All I can tell is brother you have to wait
Don't you know it's gonna be all right
    All right, all right
    Ah

    Ah, ah, ah, ah, ah...

You say you'll change the constitution
    Well, you know
We all want to change your head
You tell me it's the institution
    Well, you know
You better free you mind instead

    Revolution Song Chart
  • This was the first overtly political Beatles song. It was John Lennon's response to the Vietnam War.
  • John Lennon wrote this in India while The Beatles were at a transcendental meditation camp with The Maharishi. Lennon told Rolling Stone: "I had been thinking about it up in the hills in India. I still had this 'God will save us' feeling about it, that it's going to be all right (even now I'm saying 'Hold on, John, it's going to be all right,' otherwise, I won't hold on) but that's why I did it, I wanted to talk, I wanted to say my piece about revolution. I wanted to tell you, or whoever listens, to communicate, to say 'What do you say? This is what I say.'"
  • Revolutionaries take different approaches to reach their goals. In a 1998 interview with Uncut, Yoko One gave her thoughts on Lennon's approach and how he expressed it in this song: "John's idea of revolution was that he did not want to create the situation where when you destroy statues, you become a statue. And also what he means is that there's too much repercussion in the usual form of revolution. He preferred evolution. So you have to take a peaceful method to get peace rather than you don't care what method you take to get peace, and he was very, very adamant about that."
  • The original slow version appears on The White Album. The fast, loud version was released as a single. In the slow version, Lennon says "count me in" as well as "count me out" when referring to violence. This gives the song a dual meaning.
  • This was released as the B-side of "Hey Jude." Lennon wanted it to be the first A-side released on Apple Records, the label The Beatles started, but "Hey Jude" got the honor.
  • There are so many versions of this song because Paul McCartney didn't like it. Lennon really wanted this song to be the 'A' side of the single instead of "Hey Jude," and kept changing it around to come up with something that would make Paul see it his way. He basically wrote the song because he felt like he was being pulled in so many directions by different people, all of whom wanted his backing, politically. It was also him questioning his own belief in the revolution that was going on... whether he was "out" or "in." In truth, he was writing about a revolution of the mind rather than a physical "in the streets" revolution. He truly believed that revolution comes from inner change rather than social violence. (This is discussed in the DVD Composing the Beatles Songbook )
  • Nike used this for commercials in 1987. Capitol Records, who owns the performance rights, meaning The Beatles version of the song, was paid $250,000. Michael Jackson, who owns the publishing rights, meaning use of the words and music, also had to agree and was paid for the song.

The Nike commercials caused a huge backlash from Beatles fans who felt that Nike was disrespecting the legacy of John Lennon, who probably would have objected to its use. There were plans to use more Beatles songs in future ads, but they were abandoned when it became clear it was not good business practice. As years went by, it became more acceptable to use songs in commercials, but Beatles songs were still considered sacred, especially since the group did not control their rights. In 2002, "When I'm 64" was used in a commercial for Allstate insurance. Many Beatles fans were not pleased, but it didn't get nearly the reaction of the Nike commercials, partly because it was not a political song, but also because it was sung by Julian Lennon , which implied endorsement by his father.
  • On September 4, 1968, The Beatles made a promotional film for this song and "Hey Jude" at Twickenham Studios in London. These were directed by Michael Lindsay-Hogg, who did the previous Beatles videos: "Paperback Writer" and "Rain."

Unlike those clips, which were shot outdoors, the "Hey Jude" and "Revolution" videos were shot in a studio setting and meant to look like the band was performing it live. They both aired September 8 on Frost On Sunday, a popular UK show hosted by David Frost, who was at the Twickenham shoot to introduce the clip for the segment on his show, making it appear that the band was really there.

Another edit of the footage was later broadcast on Top Of The Pops, and yet another was shown in America on The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour. When the Beatles compilation 1+ was released in 2015, a restored version of the video was included in the set.
  • Nicky Hopkins played the piano. When The Beatles needed keyboards, they usually used Hopkins, Billy Preston, or their producer, George Martin.
  • The dirty guitar sound was created by plugging the guitars directly into the audio board. The guitar sounded so scratchy that many who bought the 45 RPM single tried to return it, thinking it was defective. (thanks to Dwight Rounds, author of The Year The Music Died, 1964-1972 )
  • The word "Revolution" is mentioned just once, in the first line.
  • John Lennon wanted his vocals to have an unusual sound, so he recorded most of them lying on his back in the studio. The famous scream at the beginning is a double-tracked recording of Lennon. (thanks, Bertrand - Paris, France and Jonathon - Clermont, FL)
  • The version on the Hey Jude compilation, released in February 1970 in the US, was the B-side of the "Hey Jude" single. The Hey Jude compilation album peaked at #2 in the US and consists of a collection of singles and B-sides that had not previously appeared on US non-soundtrack album releases. The album cover was taken at the final Beatles photo session, at Lennon's (later Starr's) country estate in Ascot, England. (thanks, Bertrand - Paris, France)
  • Thompson Twins performed this song at the Philadelphia stage of Live Aid on July 13, 1985. The concert, which raised money for famine relief in Africa, had a global audience of at least 1.5 billion. Thompson Twins were joined on stage for the performance by Madonna (who contributed backing vocals and tambourine), Steve Stevens (best known as Billy Idol's guitarist) and Nile Rodgers, who was also on guitar.

Thompson Twins included the song on their album Here's to Future Days, which was released a few months later and produced by Rodgers.
  • The Stone Temple Pilots performed this at Madison Square Garden as part of the 2001 special, Come Together: A Night For John Lennon's Words And Music. Their version was released as a single, with proceeds going to charity.

    Released: 1968

    The Inner Light Lyrics

Without going out of my door,
I can know all things of earth
Without looking out of my window
I could know the ways of heaven
The farther one travels, the less one knows

    The less one really knows
Without going out of your door
You can know all things on earth
Without looking out of your window
You could know the ways of heaven
The farther one travels, the less one knows

    The less one really knows
Arrive without traveling, see all without looking
    Do all without doing

  • George Harrison wrote this song. It was released as the B-side of "Lady Madonna" and was Harrison's first song to appear on a single.
  • All the music was recorded by Indian session musicians at the EMI studios in Bombay, India, while George was working on the soundtrack to the movie Wonderwall.
  • George Harrison had originally recorded this for the Wonderwall soundtrack in January 1968. When The Beatles got together for recording sessions shortly before their trip to India, John and Paul added harmonies to the final line, "Do all without doing." (thanks, Adrian - Wilmington, DE)
  • The lyrics are a translation of a section of the Tao Te Ching. Juan Mascaro, a Sanskrit teacher at Cambridge University, sent the book to George.
  • This was Harrison's last Indian-themed Beatles song.
  • The original release was in mono; a stereo version was mixed in 1970 and used on the Past Masters compilation. The mono mix features an extra Indian instrument in the intro that did not make it to the stereo version.
  • Jeff Lynne from Electric Light Orchestra performed this at George Harrison's 2002 memorial show The Concert For George. Lynne was good friends with Harrison and played with him in The Traveling Wilburys. (thanks, Bertrand - Paris, France, for above 2)

    Rain Lyrics

If the Rain comes they run and hide their heads.
They might as well be dead.
If the rain comes, if the rain comes.
When the sun shines they slip into the shade

    (When the sun shines down.)
    And drink their lemonade.
    (When the sun shines down.)
When the sun shines, when the sun shines.

    Rain, I don't mind.
    Shine, the weather's fine.
I can show you that when it starts to rain,
    (When the sun shines down.)

    Everything's the same.
    (When the sun shines down.)
I can show you, I can show you.
    Rain, I don't mind.

    Shine, the weather's fine.
Can you hear me, that when it rains and shines,
    (When the sun shines down.)
It's just a state of mind?

    (When the sun shines down.)
Can you hear me, can you hear me?
If the rain comes they run and hide their heads.

  • John Lennon wrote most of "Rain." It was his first song to get really deep, exploring themes of reality and illusion - after all, rain or shine is just a state of mind.
  • This was the first song to use a tape played backwards, which created the strange audio effect. John Lennon discovered the technique when he put the tape for "Tomorrow Never Knows" on the wrong way. He was stoned at the time, and producer George Martin had to convince him that using a backward recording for the entire song was a bad idea. (thanks, Bertrand - Paris, France)
  • Ringo Starr has said this is his best drumming on a Beatles song.
  • The backwards vocal at the end fade out is actually the songs first line: "When the rain comes they run and hide their heads". (thanks, Chet - Saratoga Springs, NY)
  • This was one of the first Beatles records to feature loud, booming bass. McCartney's bassline is extremely recognizable, in contrast to The Beatles' older records. (thanks, Chris LaBenne - Niles, OH)
  • This was released as the B-side of "Paperback Writer." It was recorded during the Revolver sessions.
  • As part of the studio manipulation that gave this song such an unusual sound, the rhythm track was played fast and then slowed down on tape.
  • The Beatles shot a video for this song with director Michael Lindsay-Hogg, who was tapped because he worked on the UK music show Ready, Steady,Go!. The videos for "Rain" and "Paperback Writer" were shot at the same time, with some footage recorded at Abbey Road studios, but most of it outdoors at the Chiswick House gardens in London.

These videos were done so The Beatles could promote the single without actually performing on the various TV shows that drew huge audiences and drove sales. In doing so, they set a standard for music videos, as other bands followed suit. The "Rain" video uses many elements that would become commonplace, including candid shots from between takes.
