I Want To Hold Your Hand Song Chart

This was the first Beatles song to catch on in America. In 1963, the Beatles became stars in England, but couldn't break through in the US. They couldn't get a major label to distribute their singles in America, so songs like "Love Me Do" and "She Loves You" were issued on small labels and flopped, even though they were hits in England. By February 1964, America finally took notice of The Beatles and bought this single in droves, giving them their first US hit. It sold better in first 10 days of release in the US than any other British single, and remains the best-selling Beatles single in the United States, moving over 12 million copies.

The Beatles celebrated madly when they found out they were #1 in America. They came to America for the first time in February 1964, a week after this hit #1, and having the top single gave them a huge boost. Conquering the US was, and still is, a big deal for British bands. Many groups that are huge in the UK (Oasis, Blur) never really catch on in America.

John Lennon and Paul McCartney wrote this in Jane Asher's basement. Asher was an actress who became Paul's first high-profile girlfriend. After appearing in several movies, TV shows and stage productions, Asher became an authority on baking, and has her own business selling party cakes and supplying baking and decorating equipment. She and Paul broke up in 1968.

Jane had a brother named Pete Asher who teamed up with Gordon Waller to form the duo Peter & Gordon and McCartney wrote for them their hit single "A World Without Love." Pete recalled in a 2010 interview with Gibson.com the two Beatles penning this song at his home: "My mother had a practice room that she used to give private oboe lessons when she wasn't teaching at The Royal Academy, where she was a professor. There was just a piano, and an upright chair and a sofa. Paul used that room to write in, from time to time. One afternoon John came over, while I was upstairs in my room. The two of them were in the basement for an hour or so, and Paul called me down to listen to a song they had just finished. I went downstairs and sat on the sofa, and they sat side by side, on the piano bench. That's where they played 'I Want to Hold Your Hand' for the first anywhere. They asked me what I thought. I said, 'I think it's very good.'" [laughs]

The Beatles performed this on their first 2 Ed Sullivan Show appearances, which took place Feb 9th and 16th, 1964. There was a media frenzy around The Beatles, as this was #1 on the charts and millions of people saw them on Sullivan's show. The Beatles were booked for the show before they had a hit in the US, so they actually got paid less than many other guests for their appearance.

Bob Dylan thought the line "I can't hide" was "I get high," and a reference to marijuana. He was surprised to learn they had never tried pot, and became part of Beatles lore when he introduced them to it.

This was one of John Lennon's favorite Beatles songs. It starts with a falling melody, which is typical of Lennon's songwriting, and ends with a cadence with a quarter-interval: "I'll think you'll understand." That quarter-interval cadence you can even hear in Lennon's first bit of "From Me to You" and in "Tomorrow Never Knows." McCartney most often uses second-intervals. Also typically Lennon is the sudden octave-run, "Haaaaand..." The same octave-run you can hear in the end of the middle part in Lennon's "Please Please Me": "To reason with youuuuuu..." Also note that the beginning of the melody in the middle part is almost the same melody as the beginning of the middle part in "Don't Let Me Down." Two parody groups made answer songs to this in 1964: "I'll Let You Hold My Hand" by The Bootles and "Yes, You Can Hold My Hand" by The Beatlettes.

This was played on a Washington, D.C. radio station before it was released in America by a DJ who got the record from a stewardess. It was a huge hit with his listeners.

The first Beatles song recorded on 4 track equipment. Some of their first songs were in mono.

The Beatles also cut a German version called "Komm Gib Mir Deine Hand." The Beatles picked up some German while playing The Star Club in Hamburg in 1962.

In the 1960s it wasn't uncommon for British stars to record new versions of their hits in other languages. The idea was to increase airplay on continental stations and to get a hit before an indigenous artist recorded a version in the local tongue. On January 29, 1964, The Beatles went into the Pathé Marconi Studios in Paris and recorded this song and "She Loves You" ("Sie Liebt Dich") in German. The lyrics had been hurriedly translated by a Luxembourger named Camillo Felgen, who was then a program director at Radio Luxembourg. As well, apart from their recording of "My Bonnie" in the early '60s, this was the only time The Beatles recorded in another language. In addition it was the sole occasion on which they recorded outside London.

When this hit US #1 it was the first time a British group topped the charts in the US since 1962, when "Telstar" by The Tornados did it. The Beatles quickly began dominating the US charts.

At times John Lennon realized that the crowds the Beatles played to were so loud that they really couldn't hear them sing, so sometimes instead of saying "I want to hold your hand," John would say, "I want to hold your gland" as a reference to women's breasts. (thanks, bob - Laguna Beach, CA)

It was the youth who discovered The Beatles, and while young people can be easily manipulated through hype and image, in the case of The Beatles it was the music that drew them in. An American girl Sanda Stewart, 15 years old in spring 1964 (according to Hunter Davies in his book Beatles) said: "I was one day in a shop with my mother when I suddenly heard 'I Want to Hold Your Hand' on the car radio. Such a special sound! I could never stop thinking about it. No song has effected me on that way. Several other girls in school had reacted in the same way. This Motown classic was originally recorded by Barrett Strong in 1959. Strong became a writer for Motown, and worked on some of The Temptations' hits. The song was written by Motown chief Berry Gordy with help from an assistant at the company, Janie Bradford.

The Beatles performed this at their audition for Decca Records in 1962. They didn't get the deal, but were singned on their next audition, which was for Parlophone Records. Decca did sign Brian Poole And The Tremeloes.

Beatles producer George Martin played the piano. John Lennon sang lead.

Speaking of money, Paul McCartney is the wealthiest rock star ever, earning over a billion dollars in his career.

Stranglehold Song Chart

Nugent didn't sing lead on this. Derek St. Holmes, who was the vocalist with his band, did. Nugent resented the attention Holmes received on stage and eventually sang all the hits himself. His explanation: "There's only one alpha wolf, and that's me."

Right up there with "Thunderstruck" as one of the most swaggering, guitar-driven rockers with manly appeal, the lyrics are rather violent, with the singer letting some poor girl know that he has the upper hand now, and is willing to burn her house down if he has to. Nugent claims the misogynist, violent lyrics were part of his act and should not be taken literally. This did not make women's groups feel any better.

Cross Canadian Ragweed did a cover of this song on their album Soul Gravy after the last song as a secret song. They also use it to do band intros at their concerts. (thanks, Cole - San Angelo, TX)

The song can be heard in a television commercial for the Volkswagen Jetta, which follows the history of a young guy's vehicle purchases from his first 10-speed bike to a questionably legal speedster. Years later, now a doting dad he chooses the Jetta after learning it is a 2012 IIHS Top Safety Pick.

I Wanna Be Your Man Song Chart

John Lennon and Paul McCartney were working on this when they ran into the Rolling Stones manager Andrew Loog Oldham on September 10, 1963 in London. Oldham did some work promoting The Beatles earlier in 1963, and invited John and Paul to the Studio 51 jazz club where The Stones were rehearsing. They had been working on "I Wanna Be Your Man," and finished it at the rehearsal when they found out The Stones were looking for a song to use as their second UK single. They gave the song to The Stones but also recorded it themselves on their With The Beatles album. Mick Jagger and Keith Richards were amazed at this display of songwriting prowess and soon began writing their own songs.

Ringo sang lead, as the song was developed for him. It was his showpiece song during their live performances from 1963-1966.

Contrary to popular opinion, this was not the only song recorded by both The Beatles and The Rolling Stones. "Money (That's What I Want)" was recorded by both groups as well. It appears on the album With the Beatles as well as the Stones' More Hot Rocks (Big Hits and Fazed Cookies). (thanks, Joel - Chicago, IL)

Paul McCartney was the main author of this song, but it was finished up by both Lennon and McCartney during a jam session with The Rolling Stones. Lennon himself practically scoffed at the song, saying in an interview with David Sheff, "It was a throwaway. The only two versions of the song were Ringo and the Rolling Stones. That shows how much importance we put on it: We weren't going to give them anything great, right?"

While the "rivalry" between The Beatles and The Rolling Stones was played up at the time for publicity purposes, Keith Richards eventually denied that any such rivalry was present.

That's "the fifth Beatle" George Martin on the Hammond organ. Martin dismissed the honorary title as "nonsense," but his contributions to the music world were nevertheless enough to get his UK status raised to that of "knight bachelor" in 1996.

Meanwhile, producer Andrew Loog Oldham lives on without knighthood. It was Oldham, by the way, who first came up with the Stones' early "anti-Beatles" image, as a rougher, edgier counterpart to the "adorable moptops" Beatles image.

The Beatles performed this song in their 1964 film A Hard Day's Night. The song was also used in a 2004 episode of the TV show Crossing Jordan in a version performed by Sam Phillips. She didn't change the gender and did a darker take on the song.

You've Really Got A Hold On Me Song Chart

Miracles leader Smokey Robinson wrote this song while thinking about Sam Cooke's "Bring It On Home To Me." Cooke would sometimes perform at Robinson's church with his group the Soul Stirrers, and Smokey was a big fan. Cooke's song finds the singer apologizing to his girl after casting her off, promising to treat her right if she comes back. "You've Really Got A Hold On Me" is the same sentiment but with the roles reversed: the girl mistreats the guy, but he loves her unconditionally.

Smokey Robinson wrote this song when he was in New York City negotiating a publishing deal, and not pleased with the way the talks were going. He says that he wrote the song in his hotel room with the intention of writing something controversial, which he accomplished with the first line: "I don't like you, but I love you." Such a conflicted and unhealthy sentiment was rarely heard in songs of this era.

When Motown was growing into a dominant label in 1962, they set up a tour where many of their acts performed together around the United States. For many people, this was their first look at Motown acts like The Supremes, Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye. This was the biggest Motown hit at the time, so The Miracles closed the shows with it.

The Beatles recorded this in 1963 and performed it in their last movie, Let It Be. The Beatles were the first big British band to come to America and admit they were influenced by black music. Robinson admired this admission, and felt they helped black artists by covering their songs.

It wasn't the only Motown song The Beatles covered: they also recorded "Money (That's What I Want)" and "Please Mr. Postman" along with "You've Really Got A Hold On Me" on their U.K. release The Beatles' Second Album. Berry Gordy of Motown gave The Beatles a reduced rate for the rights to cover the songs, as it was a huge deal for him to have the most popular band in England recording songs from his roster.

Charting cover versions of this song in America were released by Gayle McCormick (#98, 1972) and Eddie Money (#72, 1979). Bob Seger included the song in his live shows when he was starting out in the early '60s.

Smokey Robinson sang this song on the children's show Sesame Street in a sketch where a giant puppet "U" grabbed on to Smokey as he sang the song and ultimately carried him away. (thanks, Alden - College Park, MD)

A Groovy Kind Of Love Song Chart

This was written by New York songwriters Carole Bayer Sager and Toni Wine; Sager was 22 when they wrote it, and Wine was 17. They wrote the song for Screen Gems publishing, and Jack McGraw, who worked at Screen Gems' London office, thought the song would be perfect for the British group The Mindbenders. The song became a huge hit in England, and was released in America a year later, where it was also very successful.

Sager was still teaching high school when she wrote this, and Wine was still in high school. Both went on to very successful careers in the music industry, with Sager writing popular songs for stage productions and movies (including "Arthur's Theme (Best That You Can Do)"), and Wine wroting the hit "Candida" and singing on many famous songs, including Willie Nelson's version of "Always On My Mind" and "Sugar, Sugar" by The Archies. They wrote this in Sager's apartment.

In our interview with Toni Wine, she explained: "We were talking about 'Groovy' being the new word. The only song we knew of was 59th Street Bridge Song, Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel. You know, 'Feelin' groovy.' And we knew we wanted to write a song with that word in it. Because we knew it was the happening word, and we wanted to jump on that. Carole came up with 'Groovy kinda... groovy kinda... groovy...' and we're all just saying, 'Kinda groovy, kinda groovy, kinda...' I don't exactly know who came up with 'Love,' but it was 'Groovy kind of love.' And we did it. We wrote it in 20 minutes. It was amazing. Just flew out of our mouths, and at the piano, it was a real quick and easy song to write. Those are incredible things when those songs can get written. Like some you can just be hung on for so long, and then others just happen very quickly. And that was one of them. And it's been so good to us."

In 1966, this was also recorded by Patti LaBelle And The Bluebelles, but the version recorded by The Mindbenders, who released it as their first single without lead singer Wayne Fontana, became the hit.

Wayne Fontana left the Mindbenders after numerous singles failed to chart after their hit "Game of Love." To quote an angry Eric Stewart after Wayne just walked off the stage while they were playing: "All we lost was our tambourine player. Wayne had been threatening to leave the band for some time and drummer Ric Rothwell had reached the end of patience with his groaning an moaning. This was a #1 UK and US hit for Phil Collins in 1988. His version was used in the movie Buster, where Collins plays the title role of Buster Edwards. Collins put together the soundtrack using various '60s songs, since that's when the movie was set (he enlisted Motown hitmaker Lamont Dozier to co-write "Two Hearts," another US #1 hit used in the film).

A child actor, Collins was wary about taking a movie role after becoming famous as a musician, and he made sure the song didn't appear until the end of the film so musical perceptions wouldn't taint his performance. The film was a box office flop, but Collins stood by it, saying it was an excellent film.

The music is based on the Rondo from "Sonatina in G Major" by Muzio Clementi.

This was written for the movie Buster. Collins was in the film, playing former train-robber Buster Edwards. The film was a (you guessed it) bust at the box office, but its soundtrack contained two US #1 hits: "Two Hearts" and a Phil Collins cover of "A Groovy Kind Of Love."

Lamont Dozier produced this song and wrote the music (Collins wrote the lyric). As part of the famous songwriting team Holland-Dozier-Holland, Dozier wrote 12 #1 hits for Motown artists, mostly The Supremes. For Collins, who covered one of those hits ("You Can't Hurry Love"), writing with Dozier was a thrill. "I grew up with Lamont's music," he said. "He's written some of the best songs, and to have my name next to his at the bottom of the song credit means an awful lot to me."

For Dozier, "Two Hearts" was his 14th and last #1 hit as a writer (Kim Wilde's 1986 cover of "You Keep Me Hangin' On" was #13).

Collins returned the favor by singing with Dozier on his 1991 song "The Quiet's Too Loud."

In the movie credits, this feel-good song is listed as "Two Hearts (One Mind)." It is about a couple who are connected though time and space even when they're not together. Their two hearts share a brain.

This won a Grammy in 1989 for Best Song Written for a Motion Picture or Television. Remarkably, this was the first Grammy win for any member of the Holland-Dozier-Holland songwriting team.

Phil Collins first met Lamont Dozier when they were introduced at one of Collins' concerts. They stayed in touch, and when Collins was working on Eric Clapton's 1986 August album, he called Dozier to see if he had any songs for Clapton to record. Clapton ended up doing two Dozier compositions: "Run" and "Hung Up on Your Love." About a year later, Collins was working on the movie Buster, which is set in the '60s. He wanted songs that had the feel of the era, so he thought of Dozier - a good man to call for a '60s-sounding hit. Dozier listened to some of his old songs to get the feel, and came up with the music for "Two Hearts," which Collins loved.

Collins and Dozier wrote other songs that also made the soundtrack: "Big Noise" (performed by Collins) and "Loco In Acapulco" (performed by the Four Tops).

For Collins, this was his sixth US #1 hit as a solo artist, and his fifth as a songwriter. After writing and recording the chart-toppers "Against All Odds (Take A Look At Me Now)," "One More Night" and "Sussudio," Collins had two #1's with songs he didn't write - "Separate Lives" and "A Groovy Kind Of Love," and also co-wrote the Genesis #1 "Invisible Touch." After "Two Hearts," he scored another #1 as artist and composer with "Another Day in Paradise."

This was nominated for an Oscar for Best Original Song. It lost to Carly Simon's "Let The River Run," from the Working Girl soundtrack. Collins got the award in 1999 for "You'll Be In My Heart," which he wrote for Tarzan.

The song did win a Golden Globe award for Best Original Song (sort of - it tied with "Let The River Run"). Accepting the award, Collins said, "I'm very proud and pleased that Buster is in some way represented tonight. I had a great time doing it... it's just a shame that not more people saw the film."

In the Buster movie, this doesn't play until the end credits. The other song Collins sang for the film, "A Groovy Kind Of Love," plays near the end of the film. Collins put his songs at the end because he didn't want his singing to interfere with his character.

Collins is far from the first to use "Two Hearts" in a title, but his is by far the biggest hit. A look at some songs with dual-heart action and their messages:

The first has Collins watching himself perform the song with his "band" (he actually plays all the band members) on TV while another screen flashes scenes from Buster. Please Mr. Postman Song Chart

William Garrett, a songwriter friend of group member Georgia Dobbins, offered this to The Marvelettes when she asked if he had anything for them to sing. He wrote it as a Blues song, but Dobbins completely rewrote it (she saved only the title) and taught it to lead singer Gladys Horton. Before The Marvelettes recorded it, Dobbins left the group to care for her mother. Motown producers Robert Bateman and Brian Holland worked on the song with The Marvelettes and crafted it into a hit. Holland, along with his brother Eddie and Lamont Dozier, went on to write many other Motown classics.

Marvin Gaye played drums on this song. He was 22 at the time and trying to break into the business.

Part of this song was written by a postman who helped Dobbins complete the lyrics. His name was Freddie Gorman and his mail route included Brewster public housing where members of The Supremes lived. The Marvelettes were five teenage girls from Inkster, Michigan. This was their first single and their only #1. They went through many member changes before breaking up in 1969.

Waiting for a letter and other mail-related storylines were common in songs of this era, when the postal service provided a primary means of communication ("Return To Sender" was a hit for Elvis the following year). This song describes a woman awaiting a letter from her lover - something unlikely to happen in the internet age.

This was the first #1 hit for Motown Records. Motown soon flourished into a legendary label with hundreds of hits.

The Marvelettes' follow-up single "Twistin' Postman" (a #34 American hit) tried to capitalize on the dance craze and also continued the story of the woman who waits for a letter from her boyfriend. This was #1 US hit for the Carpenters, who covered it on their 1975 album Horizon. Featuring Karen Carpenter on drums and a guitar solo by Tony Peluso, it was their biggest hit ever worldwide, reaching #1 in the US, Australia, Germany, Japan and several other countries, as well as reaching #2 in the UK and Canada. Richard Carpenter later said that he wished they never did the song, as by that stage of their career, they should not have been covering oldies.

The Beatles recorded this in 1963. Sung by John Lennon, they played it at many of their early concerts. The song was one of three Motown cuts, along with "You've Really Got A Hold On Me" and "Money (That's What I Want)" that The Beatles released on The Beatles' Second Album. Motown head Berry Gordy agreed to a lower rate for use of the songs, as he was thrilled to have The Beatles recording tracks from his roster.

The songwriting credits on this track are a bit murky. The copyright lists Georgia Dobbins, Brian Holland, Freddie Gorman and Robert Bateman, but the music publishing agencies (the ones who send the checks), list just Holland, Bateman and Gorman. William Garrett is listed as one of the writers in some publications.

This was written in 1957 for the Broadway musical The Music Man. It was written by songwriter Meredith Willson, who also wrote "76 Trombones" for the same musical as well as the seasonal favorite "It's Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas."

Paul McCartney loved show tunes and wanted to cover this. His favorite version was Peggy Lee's.

The Beatles played this song, along with "She Loves You" and "Twist And Shout," at the Royal Command Performance of 1963. Paul credited it to their "Favorite American group, Sophie Tucker." (thanks, don - rapid city, SD)

The Beatles performed this on their first Ed Sullivan Show appearance, February 9, 1964. This was a huge event, as Beatlemania had just come to America. This was the only song they played that night that was not one of their hits - they put it in to appeal to the older audience that was tuned in. As they played, the camera zoomed in on each Beatle and superimposed their first name. When it got to Lennon, it read, "Sorry girls, he's married."

This was also performed during the Beatles appearance on the Royal Variety Show on November 4, 1963. It was probably also appealing to the older audience and it provided a break between the up-tempo numbers, "She Loves You" and "Twist and Shout." (thanks, Adrian - Wilmington, DE)

This song is about racism in the American South. It makes references to slavery and the Ku Klux Klan.

Lynyrd Skynyrd wrote "Sweet Home Alabama" as a response to this song. Young is mentioned in the line "I hope Neil Young will remember, a Southern man don't need him around anyhow." Lynyrd Skynyrd were big fans of Young. "Sweet Home Alabama" was meant as a good-natured answer to this, explaining the good things about Alabama. Skynyrd lead singer Ronnie Van Zandt often wore Neil Young T-shirts while performing.
Young was quite happy with "Sweet Home Alabama." He said, "They play like they mean it, I'm proud to have my name in a song like theirs."

After the release of "Sweet Home Alabama," Neil Young wrote several songs for Lynyrd Skynyrd as means of reconciliation, including his eventual standby "Powderfinger." However, the band had their infamous plane crash before they could use the songs, and Young ended up keeping them for himself.

Director Jonathan Demme first cut the opening sequence of his movie Philadelphia to this song in an effort to get Young to write a song like it for the film. Young gave him "Philadelphia," which he used over the end. Bruce Springsteen's contribution, "Streets Of Philadelphia," was used over the open.

In the liner notes for his greatest hits album Decade, Young wrote: "This song could have been written on a civil rights march after stopping off to watch Gone With The Wind at a local theater."

Young summed up the alleged "feud" instigated between him and Lynyrd Skynyrd in a 1995 interview with Mojo Magazine: "Oh, they didn't really put me down! But then again, maybe they did! (laughs) But not in a way that matters. S--t, I think 'Sweet Home Alabama' is a great song. I've actually performed it live a couple of times myself."

In his 2012 biography Waging Heavy Peace, Neil Young apologized for "Southern Man": "I don’t like my words when I listen to it. They are accusatory and condescending, not fully thought out, and too easy to misconstrue." (thanks, Bertrand - Paris, France)

Don't Bother Me Song Chart

This was George Harrison's first recorded song. It was his response to critics who claimed he was not an important member of the group because he did not write songs.

Harrison never regarded this song very highly, stating, "I don't think it's a particularly good song... It mightn't even be a song at all, but at least it showed me that all I needed to do was keep on writing, and then maybe eventually I would write something good."

A Harrison-penned song would not appear again until the 1965 album Help!. That would be "You Know What To Do."

This song has a darker, more pessimistic mood that was uncommon of The Beatles main sound, but would come to be Harrison's trademark stamp. This is actually part of what made the Beatles' formula work: McCartney was the chirpy, positive one, and Harrison was the melancholic counterpart.

George wrote this when he was down with the flu in a hotel room in the Northeast of England. The Beatles chauffeur kept various tapes which the band were working on. Years later these were sold off at one of the London auction houses. This song in it's very earliest stages is available on bootleg and features George working the music and lyrics out as he goes along. George stated, "I wrote the song as an exercise to see if I could write a song. I was sick in bed. Maybe that's why it turned out to be 'Don't Bother Me.'" (thanks, John - London, England)

It's an Italian word to describe the Renaissance technique of dramatically contrasted lighting effects in oil paintings.

This was the first song on Side 2 of Meet The Beatles, their first album released in the US. With The Beatles was their second UK release.

George Harrison may have thought very little of this song, but his friend Tom Petty didn't share this sentiment. "I thought it was just the coolest song, like nothing I'd heard in rock," Petty told Rolling Stone in 2014. "I'd say, 'Well, I like it. A lot. If you did that today, I'd say it was really good.' And he'd go, 'Well, you'd be wrong.'"
