Afternoon Delight Lyrics

Gonna find my baby, gonna hold her tight
Gonna grab some Afternoon Delight
My motto's always been 'when it's right, it's right'
Why wait until the middle of a cold dark night?
When everything's a little clearer in the light of day
And we know the night is always gonna be there any way

Thinkin' of you's workin' up my appetite
Looking forward to a little afternoon delight
Rubbin' sticks and stones together makes the sparks ingite
And the thought of lovin' you is getting so exciting
Sky rockets in flight
Afternoon delight
Afternoon delight
Afternoon delight

Started out this morning feeling so polite
I always though a fish could not be caught who wouldn't bite
But you've got some bait a waitin' and I think I might try nibbling
A little afternoon delight
Sky rockets in flight
Afternoon delight
Afternoon delight
Afternoon delight

Please be waiting for me, baby, when I come around
We could make a lot of lovin' 'for the sun goes down

Thinkin' of you's workin' up my appetite
Looking forward to a little afternoon delight
Rubbin' sticks and stones together makes the sparks ingite
And the thought of lovin' you is getting so exciting
Sky rockets in flight
Afternoon delight
Afternoon delight
Afternoon delight

Afternoon delight!

Afternoon Delight Song Chart
  • This is a double entendre song named after the late-afternoon appetizer menu at the restaurant Clyde's Of Georgetown in Washington, DC, where they have a gold record from this song hanging in the bar. That's the official explanation at least: the other meaning is daytime sex. The inspirational menu heading read: "Afternoon Delights."
  • The Starland vocal band delivered 4-part harmonies with the married couple Bill and Taffy Danoff (Taffy Nivert after they split up), and another couple: Margot Chapman and Jon Carroll (the baby of the bunch, he was just 19 when the song was released). Taffy spiced up the stage banter when they performed this song, explaining that the title came from the menu, but adding some version of "...then Bill came home and we had our own Afternoon Delight. We wrote the song instead of having a cigarette."

Bill says the songwriting was far from sexy: he wrote it over the course of six months, often on Sundays when he was watching Redskins football. "All that energy coming out of the tube gets my creative juices flowing," he told People magazine.
  • This was the only hit for the Starland Vocal Band, who won the Grammy for Best New Artist of 1976, beating out the band Boston. In a VH1 special on One-Hit-Wonders, Bill Danoff of Starland Vocal Band said: "We got two of the five Grammys - one was Best New Artist. So that was basically the kiss of death and I feel sorry for everyone who's gotten it since."
Starland Vocal Band was a newcomer, but the Danoffs had already released four albums, two under the name Fat City and two as Billy and Taffy. The Starland Vocal Band split up after their fourth album.
  • Despite having only this one hit, the Starland Vocal Band were given their own TV series called The Starland Vocal Band in 1977. An unknown comic named David Letterman appeared on the show.
  • Under the name Fat City, the group sang backup on John Denver's "Take Me Home Country Roads." Bill and Taffy co-wrote the song. Denver helped get the Starland Vocal Band a record deal with RCA, where he had his own vanity label, Windsong Records.
  • From 1997-2007, Bill Danoff had his own restaurant in Washington DC called The Starland Cafe.
  • This was used in two 2004 movies that were set in the '70s: Anchorman and Starsky and Hutch. The Anchorman DVD contains a video of the cast performing the song, with an intro by Will Ferrell, who in his Ron Burgundy character says: "If you don't think this song is the greatest song ever, I will fight you." Mr. Moonlight Lyrics

    Mister Moonlight
You came to me one summer night
And from your beam you made my dream
And from the world you sent my girl
And from above you sent us love
And now she is mine, I think you're fine
'Cause we love you Mister Moonlight

    Mister Moonlight come again please
Here I am on my knees begging if you please
And the night you don't come my way
I pray and pray more each day
'Cause we love you Mister Moonlight

And the night you don't come my way
I pray and pray more each day
'Cause we love you Mister Moonlight

    Mister Moonlight come again please
Here I am on my knees begging if you please
And the night you don't come my way

    Mr. Moonlight Song Chart
  • The original version of this was released by a Blues group called Dr. Feelgood and The Interns in 1962. It was written by Roy Lee Johnson, who was a guitarist with The Interns. This original version the song was a B-side to the single "Dr. Feelgood" (no relation to the Motley Crue album and song of the same name), by the aforementioned group. As if that didn't muddy the waters enough, there's also a TV series Moonlight with an episode titled "Dr. Feelgood," which appears to be a complete coincidence.

The song is best known for its Beatles cover, but even among hardcore Beatles fans, this song doesn't have as much enthusiastic support. It was part of their standard stage set for many years, in part because it gave John a chance to show off his blistering vocals on stage.
  • George Harrison played the African Drum, and Paul McCartney played the Hammond organ solo on this track. The sound of a Hammond organ sounds quite dated now, but they were a big rage back in the mid-20th century. The electric organs were manufactured from the 1930s to the 1970s, by which time they were a staple of every shopping mall, where the organ store would often feature bored showroom employees plonking out show tunes. The organs were widely popular for being a cheap alternative to pipe organs, and thus easily affordable for churches.

  • Paul McCartney wrote this before he joined The Beatles.
  • The Beatles held off releasing this because at the time, ballads did not fit their hard-rocking image.
  • The song that follows this on Beatles For Sale is "Mr. Moonlight," creating a sun/moon contrast. (thanks, Ian - Lethbridge, Canada)
  • In 2008, a reel-to-reel tape containing outtakes of this song where Lennon and McCartney's attempts to finish recording cause them to break into laughter was auctioned off in England for about $23,000 in early August 2008. (thanks, Bertrand - Paris, France)

  • This song deals with the US military and their aggressive tactics. It mentions how the arms industry encourages war to get military contracts with lines like, "Weapons, not food, not homes, not shoes, not need, just feed the war cannibal-animal," and "What we don't know keeps the contracts alive and moving."

The song is from the album Evil Empire, whose title itself is a reference to US president Ronald Reagan's description of the former Soviet Union. (thanks, Tim - Pittsburgh, PA)
  • The lyric at the beginning is "Come With It Now." It is often mistaken for "Quit It Now."
  • Rage Against The Machine performed this on a controversial episode of Saturday Night Live. They hung upside-down American flags on their amps, which is something they did at their live shows. The SNL producers thought it might offend Steve Forbes, a presidential candidate who was hosting that night, and told the group to take the flags down. The band, upset that such a cutting edge show could be so oppressive, left after playing their first song. (thanks, Dale - Wichita, KS)
  • The sound of vinyl turntable scratching that you hear is not, in fact, a turntable, but was a sound effect reproduced by Tom Morello. Morello rubs his fingers along the guitar strings while toggling between two pickups and using a wah-pedal.
  • The video was nominated "Best Hard Rock Video" at the 1996 MTV Video Music Awards. It was directed by Peter Christopherson, himself a member of Hipgnosis, Throbbing Gristle, and Psychic TV, among other career milestones. He also directed videos for Yes' "Owner Of A Lonely Heart," Pink Floyd's "Us And Them," and Bad Company's "Shake It Up," to name just a few notable works.

    Maybe I'm Amazed Lyrics

Maybe I'm Amazed at the way you love me all the time
Maybe I'm afraid of the way I love you
Maybe I'm amazed at the the way you pulled me out of time
And hung me on a line
Maybe I'm amazed at the way I really need you

Maybe I'm a man and maybe I'm a lonely man
Who's in the middle of something
    That he doesn't really understand

Maybe I'm a man and maybe you're the only woman
    Who could ever help me
Baby won't you help me understand

Maybe I'm amazed at the way you're with me all the time
Maybe I'm afraid of the way I leave you
Maybe I'm amazed at the way you help me sing my song
    Right me when I'm wrong
Maybe I'm amazed at the way I really need you

    Maybe I'm Amazed Song Chart
  • Paul McCartney wrote this song about his wife Linda, who died of breast cancer in 1998. McCartney never wavered in his love for Linda, and even made her part of his band so she could tour with him.

"Maybe I'm Amazed" was written in 1969 just after The Beatles broke up. McCartney credits Linda with helping him get through this difficult time.
  • The studio version of this song was never released as a single (no tracks on the album were), but it is one of the most enduring songs on McCartney's first solo album. A concert version was released as a single in 1977 to promote the Wings Over America live album. Credited to Paul McCartney & Wings, it went to #10 in the US in April 1977.
  • McCartney, an animal rights activist, appeared on The Simpsons episode 3F03, "Lisa The Vegetarian." McCartney helps Lisa become a vegetarian and tells her that if you play this song backwards, you hear a recipe for lentil soup. Over the closing credits of that episode, if you listen carefully, you can hear the backwards message. As an extra feature on The Simpsons DVD, you can hear McCartney read the recipe and say, "There you have it Simpsons lovers, oh and by the way, I'm alive."

The lentil soup recipe Paul speaks backwards is:
    - one medium onion, chopped
    - two tablespoons of vegetable oil
    - one clove of garlic, crushed
    - one cup of carrots, chopped
    - two sticks of celery, chopped
    - half a cup of lentils
    - one bay leaf
    - one tablespoon of freshly chopped parsley
    - salt and freshly ground pepper to taste
    - two and a quarter cups of vegetable stock or water

With the exception of John Lennon, each Beatle has been on at least one episode of The Simpsons. George Harrison was on the episode "The B- Sharps" and Ringo was on the "The Letter." (thanks, Dieter - Turnhout, Belgium)
  • This was the standout track from McCartney's first solo album. Unlike George Harrison, who had 3-discs worth great songs (mostly rejected by The Beatles) for his first solo effort, Paul had little in the way of leftovers to work with. He worked up the album in his kitchen, and played all of the instruments himself. The only other performer on the album was his wife Linda, who lent backing vocals (she also took the cover photo).

Critics derided the album as an unfinished work, usually citing "Maybe I'm Amazed" as the exception. The review in Melody Maker called the other tracks "sheer banality." McCartney was annoyed that he wrote a rebuttal to the paper defending the album.
  • Artists who covered this song include The Faces, Petula Clark , Elkie Brooks, Black Oak Arkansas, Jem, Joe Cocker, and Gov't Mule. The cover by Jem was used in the season finale of the first season in the show The O.C. (thanks, Michael - San Diego, CA)

    I'm a Loser Lyrics

    I'm a Loser
    I'm a loser
And I'm not what I appear to be

Of all the love I have won, and have lost
There is one love I should never have crossed
She was a girl in a million my friend
I should have known she would win in the end

    I'm a loser
And I lost someone who's near to me
    I'm a loser
And I'm not what I appear to be

Although I laugh and I act like a clown
Beneath this mask I am wearing a frown
My tears are falling like rain from the sky
Is it for her or myself that I cry?

    I'm a loser
And I lost someone who's near to me
    I'm a loser
And I'm not what I appear to be

What have I done to deserve such a fate?
I realize I have left it too late
And so it's true pride comes before a fall
I'm telling you so that you won't lose all

    I'm a loser
And I lost someone who's near to me

When I came to your door
    No Reply
    They said it wasn't you
But I saw you peep through
    Your window
    I saw the light
    I saw the light

    I tried to telephone

    That's a lie
'Cause I know where you've been
And I saw you walk in
    Your door
    I nearly died
    I nearly died
'Cause you walked hand in hand
    With another man
    In my place

If I were you, I'd realize that I
Love you more than any other guy
And I'll forgive the lies that I
Heard before, when you gave me no reply

    No Reply Song Chart
  • This was one of John Lennon's first songs to tell a complete story. The boy knocks on his girl's door, knows she is home because he sees her in the window, but she does not answer. Lennon wrote the song when he was inspired by the song "Silhouettes." He said, "I had that image of walking down the street and seeing her silhouetted in the window and not answering the phone." Music publisher Dick James told Lennon that it was the first "complete" song that John had ever written: It had a beginning and an end.
  • This starts with a vocal, which was rare for the time.
  • This was yet another early Beatles song originally written for another artist. "No Reply" was written for Tommy Quickly, another Liverpudlian who was also signed to Beatles manager Brian Epstein. Quickly never recorded and released the song, so the Beatles used it themselves. Quickly's story rapidly deteriorated; he had a number of singles that failed to chart, then one minor hit, "Wild Side of Life," before fading back into obscurity. This Mersey Beat article seems to indicate that he just wasn't cut out for the spotlight.
  • This song's demo recording was lost due to a filing error, then found again by 1993 and re-released on Anthology 1.
  • That's record producer George Martin tickling the ivories. Meanwhile, on the demo version, Ringo was absent from the recording session; he was laid up with tonsillitis and pharyngitis. Jimmie Nicol might have done the drum work here, since he was also drafted to replace Ringo on their upcoming tour. Ringo was back at his station by the time this album version was recorded.

    You Can't Do That Lyrics

I got something to say that might cause you pain,
If I catch you talking to that boy again,
    I'm gonna let you down,
    And leave you flat,
Because I told you before, oh,
    You Can't Do That.

Well, it's the second time, I've caught you talking to him,
Do I have to tell you one more time, I think it's a sin,
I think I'll let you down.
Let you down and leave you flat,
Gonna let you down and leave you flat,
Because I've told you before, oh,
    You can't do that.

    Everybody's green,
'Cause I'm the one, who won your love,
    But if they'd seen,
You're talking that way they'd laugh in my face.

So please listen to me, if you wanna stay mine,
I can't help my feelings, I'll go out of my mind.
    I'm gonna let you down,
    And leave you flat,
Gonna let you down and leave you flat,
Because I've told you before, oh,
You can't do that. You can't do that.
You can't do that. You can't do that.
You can't do that. You can't do that.

    Everybody's green,
'Cause I'm the one, who won your love,
    But if they'd seen,
You're talking that way they'd laugh in my face.

So please listen to me, if you wanna stay mine,
I can't help my feelings, I'll go out of my mind.
    I'm gonna let you down,
    And leave you flat,
Gonna let you down and leave you flat,
Because I've told you before, oh,
    You can't do that.

You Can't Do That Song Chart
  • The Beatles recorded this in nine takes on George Harrison's 21st Birthday (in the same session as "And I Love Her" and "I Should Have Known Better"), although in May, producer George Martin overdubbed a piano making a 10th take that wasn't used. The one that saw the light of the day was Take 9. (thanks, Ben - Cheverly, MD)
  • This was filmed for the movie A Hard Day's Night, but did not make the cut. It was, however, included on the movie's soundtrack, which was released by the film's production company United Artists. Since United Artists had the soundtrack rights, The Beatles' American label, Capitol, released it as the B-side of "Can't Buy Me Love." (thanks, Bertrand - Paris, France)
  • John Lennon played lead guitar. He normally played rhythm while George Harrison played lead. Ringo played the cowbell.
  • This was the first Beatles song on which George Harrison played a 12-string guitar.
  • John Lennon told the British journalist Ray Connolly that this song was his attempt at being pioneering American soul singer Wilson Pickett.
  • Harry Nilsson covered this song on his 1967 debut album, Pandemonium Shadow Show as a tribute to The Beatles' music in general. It is performed at a slower tempo, and throughout the song lines from other Beatles songs are sung in counterpoint, ending with the line "Strawberry Beatles Forever." (thanks, David - Mesa, AZ)
