American Kids Lyrics

Doublewide Quick Stop midnight T-top
Jack in her Cherry Coke town
Momma and Daddy put their roots right here
'Cause this is where the car broke down
Yellow dog school bus kickin’ up red dust
Pickin’ us up by a barbed wire fence
Mtv on the RCA, no A/C in the vents

We were Jesus save me, blue jean baby
Born in the USA
Trailer park truck stop, faded little map dots
New York to LA
We were teenage dreamin’, front seat leanin’
Baby, come give me a kiss
Put me on the cover of the Rolling Stone
Uptown down home American Kids
Growin’ up in little pink houses
Makin’ out on living room couches
Blowin’ that smoke on a Saturday night
A little messed up, but we’re all alright

Baptist church parkin’ lot, tryin’ not to get caught
Take her home and give her your jacket
Makin’ it to second base, but sayin’ you went all the way
Monday afternoon at practice
Sisters got a boyfriend Daddy doesn’t like
Now he’s sittin’ out back, 3030 in his lap
In the blue bug zapper light

We were Jesus save me, blue jean baby
Born in the USA
Trailer park truck stop, faded little map dots
New York to LA
We were teenage dreamin’, front seat leanin’
Baby, come give me a kiss
Put me on the cover of the Rolling Stone
Uptown down home American kids
Growin’ up in little pink houses
Makin’ out on living room couches
Blowin’ that smoke on a Saturday night
A little messed up, but we’re all alright

We were Jesus save me, blue jean baby
Born in the USA
Trailer park truck stop, faded little map dots
New York to LA
We were teenage dreamin’, front seat leanin’
Baby, come give me a kiss
Put me on the cover of the Rolling Stone
Uptown down home American kids
Growin’ up in little pink houses
Makin’ out on living room couches
Blowin’ that smoke on a Saturday night
A little messed up, but we’re all alright

American Kids
  • This Rodney Clawson, Luke Laird and Shane McAnally penned tune celebrates the spirit of America's young people. Chesney first came across the song on a writing trip with McAnally, who wrote his previous hits "Somewhere With You" and "Come Over." "When I heard it, I knew I was gonna cut it," Chesney said. "It was unlike anything I'd ever heard - and I listen to a lot of songs. The rhythms, the images, the way the melody moved… It just grabs you and holds on, but even more importantly, it feels really good."
  • Clawson, Laird and McAnally wrote this song in a non-linear fashion, each adding words and phrases as they formed the song's lyric. McAnally says that in the end, the successive images give you the feeling that you're watching a slide show.
  • The song contains the line, "A little messed up, but we're alright." Chesney reflected: "Hey, life is hard. People work long hours, have all kinds of stuff going on in their personal lives. But if there's one thing I've seen over the last 10 years, looking out at the faces in the crowd: you can't keep my fans down. These are people who no matter what are in love with life, and they're gonna find the good times no matter what."

"It's not a perfect world," he added. "We are all a little screwed up, but we're all okay. I love the idea of the screw up as part of it, because honestly it makes the parts that're great, that much better. You appreciate those things that much more."
  • The song celebrates the spirit of youth across America. "There is so much more to being alive than partying, tailgates and bonfires," said Chesney. "It's every single detail of being young, growing up, remembering when, laughing about how, but especially knowing you can still do all those things! American kids are so much more complicated, more fun, more real — and if there's anything about this song, beyond the rhythms, the hooks and the playing, that I love, it's the fact that it captures all the little things that life really is made of."
  • Chesney worked with director Shaun Silva on the song's music video, which shows the country star out in the Southern California desert with a group of young people and a colorful psychedelic school bus. "The spirit of this thing - the song, the bus, the idea of the kids riding around, having fun, playing music and just celebrating life - makes you want to get involved," Chesney told Entertainment News. "Fun is where and how you make it. Out in the sun with a bunch of friends - and the people who work on my videos have been making them with me for more than a decade - even buckets of paint and a bus that needs to be covered can give you a reason to have fun."
  • Kenny Chesney was the first choice for this song, but the writers never heard back from him so Little Big Town started working on it. Shane McAnally later joined Chesney in St. John, where the pair wrote "Wild Child." When they were flying back home, Chesney said he was worried that he didn't have a first single for his The Big Revival album. He opened his laptop and started going through some old emails when he noticed the demo of "American Kids" that McAnally had sent him months earlier. Chesney admitted that he never listened to the song, but when he put on his headphones and gave it a spin, he was hooked and knew right away that it would be the single. McAnally says that Little Big Town was very gracious about it when he asked them to give the song up.
  • Lady Antebellum passed on the song before Chesney recorded it. "It just didn't fit," said Charles Kelley of the trio to The Tennessean. "'American Kids' is a song about growing up in the '70s. It makes more sense with Kenny Chesney."
  • John Mellencamp's "Pink Houses," Bruce Springsteen's "Born In The U.S.A." and Elton John's "Tiny Dancer" are all referenced in the song (the latter with the lyric "blue jean baby").

    See That Boy Again Lyrics

    I remember standing there grooving
    Nodding my head just moving
My girlfriend dragged me to this place
Staring at the crowd like we do
I saw this guy through the people
And that’s when I saw your face
But you came over to me
    As sweet as can be
    And grabbed my left hand
    Started stepping
What else did I need to know
I said yes if you wanted to go
    'Cause you are heaven
    But you left me here

So I gotta See That Boy Again
'Cause I wanna feel that joy again
I remember leaning on his shoulder
    Something and Cola
    What he ordered
That’s why I, I am on this floor again
I wanna see that boy again

    Listen to me

    My girlfriend says introduce her
But I ain’t gonna lie, I wanna lose her
You’re so nice you want to pay
Ooh you have a way with females
I didn’t get your number or email
What the hell was in my brain
'Cause I know that you believe
But I couldn’t let you see that I was stressing
    I lost breath and
Then you grabbed your Mercedes keys
But you paused before you leave
    And I just stood there
    Like I didn’t have a care

So I gotta see that boy again
'Cause I gotta feel that joy again
I remember leaning on his shoulder
    Something and Cola
    What he ordered
That’s why I, I am on this floor again
I wanna see that boy again

    Listen to me

It’s like the part in a movie
    That get away
Oh no, not the person you want
The person you want is losing
    So you pray
    But the circumstances, changes course
Which is entirely up to the boss
    But remember
Just because it’s written don’t mean you can’t play
Your hand to change your fate

So I wanna see that boy again
'Cause I wanna feel that joy again
I remember leaning on his shoulder
    Something and Cola
    What he ordered
And so I, I’m on this floor
I’m on this floor looking for you
    Where did you go
    Where did you go
    I’m on this floor
I don’t wanna leave without you baby
    Where is my baby

Got a diamond on my lap and my sunroof off
Her mind strong but her body so soft
Tattoo on her hip read “Only for a Boss†
She ain’t impressed with the way I ball
She said “You seen one ghost, you seen ‘em all†
    Even though that thing cold
She said “A Rolls Royce or a Civic, Daddy I’mma roll with you†
She ride for me, die for me, love me, that’s how she do

She said her love won’t be bought
I don’t need to spend some no money, spend some time that’s all
    I told her “Daddy don’t mind spending†
I want to see you shine like the diamonds in my pendant
She told me she don’t care for the flash
Want affection not cash, girl I ain’t even mad at you

    Hangover
  • This raucous party anthem features Snoop Dogg. PSY told Billboard magazine that he immediately thought of the Californian rapper when the track's title popped into his head. "One day I wrote a hip-hop track and I thought about one catchy word," he said. "I was hungover and I thought about hangover, so I just recorded it right away. As soon as I got that hook part I thought about Snoop Dogg, because we all know he's hanging over every day."

Pasy added that securing Snoop's services proved simple. "I called him and said 'I'm PSY, do you know me?' and he was like 'What?'" he recalled. "I said 'can you feature on my song' and he's asking the title and I say 'Hangover.' And he said, 'Oh, I'm doing it.' So, that's how we met."
  • Fans got their first taste of the viral song on June 8, 2014 on a special prime time airing of Jimmy Kimmel Live! following the NBA Finals. The five-minute music video debuted immediately on YouTube following the song's preview.
  • The video features PSY and Snoop Dogg getting their drink on in various Korean locations. The visual was shot in January 2014 during Snoop Dogg's visit to South Korea, but it appears the Korean star waited for the summer hangover season to begin before releasing it. "Snoop and I both had only 18 hours," PSY told MTV News. "Snoop's calculation was 8 hours of shooting and 10 hours of partying. That's what he thought, and honestly, that's how I convinced him to bring him to Korea."

I like us better when we're Wasted
It makes it easier to fake it
The only time we really talk
Is when our clothes are coming off
I like us better when we're wasted
It makes it easier to say it
Lay all your laundry on the bed
And then I'll lay in it instead
I like us better when we're wasted
    Oh oh oh oh

You are a glass half empty
    Sipping my ocean dry
    Emotionally spent me
Til none of our planets could align
But I could stand you one more night

I like us better when we're wasted
It makes it easier to say it
Lay all your laundry on the bed
And then I'll lay in it instead

    You guys ready,
Alone, listless, breakfast table in an otherwise empty room
Young girl, violins, center of her own attention
Mother reads aloud, child tries to understand it
    Tries to make her proud
The shades go down, it's in her head
Painted room, can't deny there's something wrong

Don't call me Daughter, not fit to
The picture kept will remind me
Don't call me daughter, not fit to
The picture kept will remind me
    Don't call me

She holds the hand that holds her down
    She will, rise above,
Don't call me daughter, not fit to
The picture kept will remind me
Don't call me daughter, not fit to be
The picture kept will remind me
    Don't call me

Don't call me daughter, not fit to

    Daughter
  • This was written from the perspective of a girl with a learning disability called dyslexia and her mother who doesn't understand the condition. Eddie Vedder explained in Pearl Jam - The Illustrated Story:
The child in that song obviously has a learning difficulty. And it's only in the last few years that they've actually been able to diagnose these learning disabilities that before were looked at as misbehavior, as just outright rebelliousness. But no one knew what it was. And these kids, because they seemed unable or reluctant to learn, they'd end up getting the s--t beaten outta them. The song ends, you know, with this idea of the shades going down so that the neighbors can't see what happens next. What hurts about s--t like that is that it ends up defining people's lives. They have to live with that abuse for the rest of their lives. Good, creative people are just f--king destroyed." (thanks, Snorkyller - Quebec City, QC)
  • The album was originally titled "Five Against One." The band changed their mind and decided to call it "Pearl Jam," then decided on "Vs." Some copies were already printed as "Pearl Jam" before they renamed it.
  • Bass player Jeff Ament took the photo that appears on the album cover. It shows a sheep gnawing through a wire fence, and represented trying to get out from a cage.
  • During the short instrumental break, Pearl Jam often extends the song by adding a short song or poem in live shows. (thanks, Elliot - St. Louis, MO)

I need you to hear this loud and clear
The line in the sand is drawn and I have no fear
When I see red all I need is a reason to set me off
To drop this bomb and pick yourself off the ground

    'Cause I'm a Badass
And you don't want to clash
'Cause your mouth's writing checks that your face can't cash
    'Cause I'm a badass
    And this warning's your last
You just crossed my path and I'll drop you fast

    'Cause I'm a badass
    A badass
    'Cause I'm a badass
    A badass
    A badass

Don't take this past the point of no return
You don't want this kind of lesson learned
When I see red all I need is a reason to throw it down
To take you out and you will have no doubt

    'Cause I'm a badass
And you don't want to clash
'Cause your mouth's writing checks that your face can't cash
    'Cause I'm a badass
    And this warning's your last
You just crossed my path and I'll drop you fast

    'Cause I'm a badass
    A badass
    'Cause I'm a badass
    A badass
    A badass

I'm going to walk away from this
And let it die than let it last
Your pushing me telling me to change my soul
And I'm gonna leave your body black and blue now

    'Cause I'm a badass
And you don't want to clash
'Cause your mouth's writing checks that your face can't cash
    'Cause I'm a badass
    And this warning's your last
You just crossed my path and I'll drop you fast

    'Cause I'm a badass
    A gun ready to blast
It's the wild, wild west and I'm fast as fast
    'Cause I'm a badass
I'll put your face in the grass
Don't test me boy 'cause I'll drop you fast

    'Cause I'm a badass
    A badass
    'Cause I'm a badass
    Take your best shot
    All you got
Good luck 'cause I'm a badass

    'Cause I'm a badass
    A badass

    Badass
  • The band wrote this song with their producer Bobby Huff, who came up with the idea during their first songwriting sesson. "Bobby Huff had an idea for where he wanted the song to go, and he had a rough idea for the chorus," Saliva guitarist Wayne Swinny told us . "We sat down in the studio; I had a guitar, and he had his phone with his little ideas that he hummed into it, and we put together a song really quick and easy."

"It was meant to be one of those 'sports anthem kind of songs,'" Swinny continued. "A lot of our songs, whether they were intended that way or not - most of them weren't - they just lend themselves to sporting events."

    No Rain Lyrics

All I can say is that my life is pretty plain,
I like watchin' the puddles gather rain
And all I can do is just pour some tea for two
And speak my point of view but it's not sane
    It's not sane
I just want someone to say to me, oh,
I'll always be there when you wake, yeah
Ya know I'd like to keep my cheeks dry today
So stay with me and I'll have it made
And I don't understand why sleep all day
And I start to complain that there's No Rain
And all I can do is read a book to stay awake,
And it rips my life away but it's a great escape
    Escape, escape, escape

All I can say is that my life is pretty plain,
Ya don't like my point of view,
    Ya think that I'm insane
It's not sane, it's not sane

I just want someone to say to me, oh, oh, oh
I'll always be there when you wake, yeah
Ya know I'd like to keep my cheeks dry today
I really wanna really gonna have it made
    Oh oh oh

    No Rain
  • Blind Melon bass player Brad Smith wrote this song before he formed the band. He had moved from Mississippi to Los Angeles, where he fell into a funk. Brad told us : "The song is about not being able to get out of bed and find excuses to face the day when you have really, in a way, nothing."

At the time, Brad was dating a girl who was going through depression (she would sleep through sunny days and complain when it didn't rain), and for a while he told himself that he was writing the song from her perspective. He later realized that he was also writing about it himself.
  • This had a very intriguing video featuring a girl dressed in a bee costume. The bee girl, Heather DeLoach, appears in the Weird Al Yankovic video for "Bedrock Anthem" (a parody of "Give It Away" by the Red Hot Chili Peppers) in the bee suit.

The concept for the video was inspired by the Blind Melon album cover, which featured a 1975 photo of Georgia Graham, the younger sister of Blind Melon drummer Glenn Graham. DeLoach was the first to audition for the role, and because she resembled Graham's sister so much, director Samuel Bayer (who also directed "Smells Like Teen Spirit") chose her. Now an aspiring actress, the former bee girl's credits include the movie Balls of Fury, a remake of the Shirley Temple film A Little Princess and the TV shows ER and Reno911. DeLoach recalled to MTV News her audition for the bee girl: "They told me Sam didn't look at any other tapes. I went in with my hair in braids and wearing those chunky glasses, because they said to look nerdy. My mom said we had to find some glasses before we went in, so we ran to a local mall right before the audition and bought them, and Sam liked them so much they're the same ones I used in the video."

The video made #22 on MTV's Greatest Videos Ever Made countdown at the end of 1999.
  • This was a hit on a variety of formats. It reached #1 on the AOR (classic rock), modern rock and metal charts.
  • The first performances of this song were on Venice Beach, where Brad Smith would do his busking. "That's where the lyric and the song was inspired from, is just having to write songs," he said. "Then being in the state of mind I was in and having to come up with material to go play down on the beach for change. I played that song on the beach for change for over a year before Shannon Hoon actually joined the band and really made that song a hit."
  • The band didn't always appreciate this song. When they opened some shows for The Rolling Stones in 1994, they left it off their setlist. Their tour manager, Paul Cummings explained: "They had become one of those bands that hate their hit - at least at that point. I couldn't understand it, but it's not my call. That probably would have been the only song that crowd would have recognized."
  • A hallmark of Brad Smith's lyrics a feeling of melancholy, which doesn't always match the music he puts to the song. He describes the music to this song as a "jaunty little happy halfway island beat," which sounds like "Don't Worry, Be Happy." He explained: "A lot of my songs come from a darker place. And if you just met me walking down the street, you'd say, 'Oh, you're such a happy guy, Brad. Why the dark songs?' I'm like, 'I don't know.' For me, it just has more meaning if you can get inside someone's soul and identify with them on a heavier level and try to connect with them on that level. Because when you're sad and you're down, you're the most vulnerable, and you feel the most alone."
  • Blind Melon's songs, including this one, were credited to the entire band even when one member wrote the vast majority of the song, as Brad Smith did with this one. Brad says that even though he wrote it, lead singer Shannon Hoon took it to a new level with his vocal. "That was a good song, and Shannon made it a great song," he told us.
  • In 2003, this was used in a commercial where a girl in a hot dog costume meets a guy in a Pepsi costume. Love blooms.
  • The inertia described in this song sounds typical of the stoner ennui like that described in "Because I Got High," but you can blame this one on the herb. "I wasn't even on drugs or drinking," Brad Smith told us. "It was just a tough point in my life. And the cool thing about that song, I think a lot of people do interpret those lyrics properly and can connect with it on that level, where 'I don't understand why I sleep all day and I start to complain that there's no rain.' It's just a line about, I'd rather it be raining so I can justify myself by laying in the bed and not doing anything. But it's a sunny day, so go out and face it."
  • This song was featured in the 2004 comedy movie Without A Paddle. (thanks, Anto - Numurkah, Australia)
  • Pearl Jam has a song called "Bee Girl" that they first performed in 1994. With lyrics like, "Bee girl, you're gonna die. You don't wanna be famous, you wanna be shy," the track was seen as a very accurate warning to Shannon Hoon that he was on a path of destruction. The song can be found on their Lost Dogs rarities album.
