This was Marty Robbins' seventh #1 on the Country chart - it stayed at the peak position for ten weeks.

The song features an early example of guitar distortion. The effect was due an electrical fault in session guitarist Grady Martin's mixing-desk for his six-string bass, whilst recording on the record. Although Martin was unhappy with the sound, it was so effective that Robbins' producer left it as it was.
