Where's Your Head At?

This was a huge international hit for Basement Jaxx, which is a UK dance/production duo formed in London by DJs Felix Buxton and Simon Ratcliffe. Buxton, who writes most of their lyrics, told us this song is about "Losing control and about states of anxiousness," adding, "Basically, they're the same divide between sanity and madness."

The hook comes from a sample of Gary Numan's track "M.E." from his 1979 album The Pleasure Principle.

Damien Peachey is the lead vocalist on this song. Never heard of him? That's typical of Basement Jaxx, who use a variety of singers - many unknown - on their tracks.

And also typical, the duo adjusted the song to suit Peachey's personality. They took some time to get to know him and tweaked the words so he would be for comfortable singing them.

The football (soccer) chant chorus was provided by US house DJs Erick Morillo and Junior Sanchez.

The video contains a dig at the smugness of the dance music industry when a performing monkey band with human faces becomes the future of music. It was praised by Mixmag magazine as the best dance music video ever made. The video was shot over three days in a real mental hospital in Prague with some vicious monkeys.

The clip was directed by the Scandinavian team Traktor and stars Damian Samuels as the ill-fated record executive.

The refrain in this song started out as "Where are my dogs at?," which didn't fit the theme of the song (madness), but sounded great. Late one night, Buxton thought to himself, "Where's my head at?," and it clicked for him that the hook should be "Where's Your Head At?"

"That song was like a bit of a puzzle and it kind of grew into being," he told us.

This was featured in the 2001 film Lara Croft: Tomb Raider.

This song tells the story of a woman getting her no-good boyfriend out of her life. Felix Buxton of Basement Jaxx wrote the lyric. "It was from the perspective of my girlfriend singing to me," he said in our interview . "I was having a go at myself from another person's perspective."

Lisa Kekaula from the American group The Bellrays provided vocals on this track. Basement Jaxx brought her to England to sing a different track, "Plug It In," but it didn't work out. They wanted to make use of her talents, so on the morning before she left, the duo quickly put a song together, which became "Good Luck." It had the "old-soul" feel that suited Kekaula's voice, and the singer nailed it.

Kekaula stars in the video as a prison guard whose ex arrives as an inmate. It was helmed by the UK director
Mat Kirkby, who also did the Basement Jaxx video for "You Don't Know Me" and the Muse video for "Hysteria."

Basement Jaxx has a deep connection to this song, which represents their core beliefs. "That's a really empowering song about humanity and for singing our connectivity and our interdependency with other human beings," Felix Buxton of the duo said in our 2014 interview .

Basement Jaxx have worked with big-name singers like Lily Allen, Dizzee Rascal and Kelis on their previous albums, but they deliberately avoided the familiar names for Junto. For this track, the Basement Jaxx pair of Simon Ratcliffe and Felix Buxton enlisted a group of children who'd been hanging around in the car park near their studio to provide the vocals.

"The idea was to get back to the beginning of Basement Jaxx and just have everyone singing songs," Buxton told The Observer. "If music is real, not manipulated and manufactured, it needs to speak from a real place."

The album title, Junto, is the Spanish word for "together." It is pronounced "hoontoe."

Basement Jaxx released six new versions of the song on September 21, 2014 as part of International Peace Day, with proceeds going to charity. As part of a larger initiative, they made stems of the track available on the website powertothepeople.fm , where anyone can make a mix of the song. Artists and dancers were also invited to participate by contributing visual interpretations.

Niara Scarlett is the lead singer on this track, and is also credited as a co-writer. The UK singer has lent her voice to songs by Mel Blatt, Prophets Of Sound and many other acts.

The song originated from a King Creole loop, which Basement Jaxx's Felix Buxton had in his back pocket for a long time. He'd tried various people to provide vocals before eventually settling for Scottish rapper Patricia Panther.

Basement Jaxx's Simon Ratcliffe explained the song title to Edge of the Net : "It's a good summery vibe and it's always been called 'Summer Dem' because it felt like a summery track. When we came to think of a title for it, we thought let's leave it at that. 'Summer Dem' is its working title really."

This was the last single released from the first Basement Jaxx album, which was a wildly successful debut for the British act. "Bingo Bango" followed "Red Alert" and "Rendez-Vu" as #1 hits on the US dance chart; all three songs also had impressive showings on the UK pop chart.

This song began life as a Latin house track. The "Bingo Bango" hook was added later - it was inspired by a dance song called "Go Bang" released in 1982 by Dinosaur L.

Basement Jaxx take an unusual approach to lead vocalists. They have used superstars like Dizzee Rascal on their songs, but are just as likely to use an amateur. This song features Cassie Watson, who was a friend of the group. In our interview with Felix Buxton, he explained: "She was working at the local car hop place. We went and got her at lunchtime just to record her and said, 'Could you go, 'bing a bing a bing, bang, bango." Make some noises, congo, bongos. And it ended up being 'Bingo Bango.''
