Tough Love Lyrics

It’s a really good sign that you hope my mind is true
And I’ve been thinking of what to say all night to you
So you wanna be a man about it, do you?
And have you figured out all you wanted, have you?

When your heart becomes a million different pieces
That's when you won't be able to recognize this feeling

That’s called Tough Love
That’s called tough love
That’s called tough love
That’s called tough love

In the middle of the night all I think about is you
I dream in all your clouds of glory, it's true
So you wanna be a man about it, do you have to?
And have you figured out all you wanted, have you?

When your heart becomes a million different pieces
That's when you won't be able to recognize this feeling

That’s called tough love (tough love)
That’s called tough love (tough love)
That’s called tough love (tough love)
That’s called tough love (tough love)

You have me crying out, crying out for more
You have me crying out, crying out for more
You have me crying out, crying out for more
You have me crying out, crying out for more

That’s called tough love (tough love)
That’s called tough love (tough love)
That’s called tough love (tough love)
That’s called tough love (tough love)

Tough Love
  • This song was recorded in New York and written by Ware with the production duo BenZel. Speaking about the track, Ware said: "I had just finished a run of shows in the States and went to New York to work with BenZel for a couple weeks, mainly as a different focus to touring. I didn't have any expectations or pressures with what would come out of those two weeks, and think 'Tough Love' sums this up. It was me experimenting with my voice and having fun with it. It just felt right and kind of dictated the route of the next album, much like 'Devotion' did on my first album."
  • BenZel is a production duo consisting of London electro musician Ben Ash, who operates as Two Inch Punch (Sam Smith's "Money On My Mind") and hitmaker Benny Blanco (Katy Perry's "I Kissed a Girl," Kesha's "TiK ToK," Bruno Mars' "Grenade," Maroon 5's "Maps.")
  • Ware's lyrics were inspired by the trails of maintaining a long-term relationship with her fiancée while touring round the world. "It's not always easy being away from the person that I love so much, but I'm also doing something that I really, really love," she told Pitchfork . "It's realistic that it's not always real easy."
  • The song's music video was directed by Alex Lee and Kyle Wightman of BRTHR Films. According to Radio.com , the clip places Jessie Ware in positions that loosely recreate several well known paintings. The shot of the singer on the grass, for instance, is a visual take of John William Waterhouse's 1889 artistic masterpiece Ophelia and the dark trench coat that Ware wears with blue sky and white clouds in the background recreates René Magritte's 1964 artwork The Son of Man.
  • Ware told MTV UK this was one of those tunes that was made in the moment. "This song really represents a lazy Wednesday afternoon in May in New York, and me not overthinking," she said. "Just creating a mood. The vocal that you hear on it is a demo vocal, so there's a weariness in my voice."
  • Asked by HMV.com why she titled her second album after this song, Ware replied, "I think I always knew that would be the title. I like titles to be song titles and this was a song that I really wanted the album to feel like."
  • The black and white CD cover photo shows Ware looking out a window in Brooklyn, which was the place where the album started.

    Say You Love Me Lyrics

Say You Love Me to my face
I need it more than your embrace
Just say you want me, that's all it takes
Heart's getting torn from your mistakes

'Cause I don't wanna fall in love
    If you don't wanna try,
But all that I've been thinking of
    Is maybe that you're mine
Baby it looks as though we're running out of words to say
    And love's floating away

Just say you love me, just for today
And don't give me time 'cause that's not the same
Want to feel burning flames when you say my name
Want to feel passion flow into my bones
    Like blood through my veins

'Cause I don't wanna fall in love
    If you don't wanna try,
But all that I've been thinking of
    Is maybe that you're mine
Baby it looks as though we're running out of words to say
    And love's floating away

    Won't you stay?!
    Won't you stay?!
Slowly, slowly you run for me,
But do you know me at all
Some one told me love controls everything
    But only if you know!

'Cause I don't wanna fall in love
    (No no no no)
    If you don't wanna try,
'Cause all that I've been thinking of
    Is maybe that you're mine
    (You're mine)
'Cause I don't wanna fall in love
    If you don't wanna try,
But all that I've been thinking of
    Is maybe that you're mine
Baby it looks as though we're running out of words to say
    And love's floating away
    Won't you stay
    Won't you stay

  • Jessie Ware wrote this song with Ed Sheeran in about 45 minutes in New York. The "The A Team" songwriter also plays guitar on the track. Ware told MTV UK, "it was one of those serendipitous moments where somebody somewhere was on our side."
  • Speaking to The Daily Star about her collaboration with Ed Sheeran, Ware said: "The way Ed writes and his work ethic is incredible. I have to give him so much credit for being able to write something that's so right for me and elevates the way I sing - he really pushed me hard."
  • The song's music video was directed by the Tell No One duo of Luke White and Remi Weekes, who collected the Golden Lion at the 2013 Cannes Festival for their short film Metamorphosis. The clip has a natural history museum setting. "When I found out Tell No One were interested in directing 'Say You Love Me,' I was so confident they would deliver something visually beautiful and provocative," Ware said. "They are such talents and I have been a fan of their work for a while."

"It was probably the most technically challenging thing I have worked on, but for them, it looked like a walk in the park," she added. "They have such confidence in what they do, it was inspiring to watch."
  • Jessie Ware told DIY magazine that she admired how comfortable Sheeran is with being a songwriter. "It was amazing to watch," she said. "I didn't want to deny myself a song that's so beautiful. And it was so easy to write, which makes it even sweeter."

"It wasn't this thing where we were sitting down going, 'How are we going to pull at people's heartstrings?!'" she added. "You know. It was literally instinct and that's so brilliant."
  • The closing section that sounds like a gospel choir is in fact just the voices of Ed Sheeran, Jessie Ware and co-producer Benny Blanco's own father and brother layered many times.

    Kind of…Sometimes…Maybe Lyrics

Do I get lonely at all?
No, cause Jamie and Johnny and Jack keep me warm
    This wasn't my fault
    I don't cry, God no, I don't cry
Could you just leave it alone?
    You keep haunting my nights
    You keep asking me twice
If I miss you at all
    And I won't lie, though I try

    Oh kind of, sometimes, maybe
    Kind of, sometimes, maybe
    Oh kind of, sometimes, maybe
    Kind of, sometimes
    Kind of, sometimes, maybe

I'm less afraid of the dark
No bright ideas, I keep the lights on
    Are you wasting my time?
    And your time, every time?
    Why you're makin' it hard?
I won't show you my cards
But you came and you lost
Do I want you at all?
OK, just a bit, I hate to admit

    Oh kind of, sometimes, maybe
    Kind of, sometimes, maybe
    Oh kind of, sometimes, maybe
    Kind of, sometimes
    Kind of, sometimes, maybe

I just sit here and I'm thinkin'
    If I still want you?!

    So why say

    Kind of, sometimes, maybe
    Kind of, sometimes, maybe
    Kind of, sometimes, maybe
    Kind of, sometimes, maybe
    Kind of, sometimes, maybe

  • This BenZel-produced track was co-penned by Jessie Ware with Miguel. It finds the English singer exploring her sexy side whilst the Los Angeles neo-soul crooner whispers sweet nothings in the background. She told Complex magazine: "This is all thanks to Miguel, the absolute king of sexy music and talking! There were moments where me and the BenZel boys didn't know where to look, he made it so steamy in the studio I swear to God."

"It was a really magic moment for me to work with someone whose album had been with me and replayed for so long," Ware added. "He was so generous and wonderful in the studio and now I think of him as extended family."
  • Ware told MTV UK how she recruited Miguel for this track: "I'd met him before when he'd done the UK release of 'Adorn' and he asked me to sing on it - which was totally unnecessary as it's the most perfect song," she said. "I asked him to return the favor and he did, and it felt a bit too good to be true."

    Champagne Kisses Lyrics

    Who's fault is this
    That I'm crazy about you
You are in every single dream
    And I'm thinking about you

If you wanna do, do, do me right
    Do, do, do, do, do
If you wanna leave it all tonight
    Do, do, do, do, do

    When there's nothing left
    Except you and this
    Champagne Kisses
    Champagne kisses
    Champagne

    When there's nothing left
    Except you and this
    Champagne kisses
    Champagne kisses
    Champagne

    I count every kiss
    Till I'm finally sleeping
    This love supreme
That's why I'll always give in

If you wanna do, do, do me right
    Do, do, do, do, do
If you wanna leave it all tonight
    Do, do, do, do, do

    When there's nothing left
    Except you and this
    Champagne kisses
    Champagne kisses
    Champagne

    When there's nothing left
    Except you and this
    Champagne kisses
    Champagne kisses
    Champagne

All I want is your love
    Don't give in
All I want is your love
    Don't give in
All I want is your love
    Don't give in
All I want is your love
    All I want is your

    When there's nothing left
    Except you and this
    Champagne kisses
    Champagne kisses
    Champagne

    When there's nothing left
    Except you and this
    Champagne kisses
    Champagne kisses
    Champagne

    And I won't be mad
    I won't be mad
    Champagne kisses
    And I won't be mad
    I won't be mad
    Champagne kisses

  • This song finds Ware showcasing the playful side of love, with kissing sounds scattered across the chorus. She described the track to Q magazine as "unashamedly romantic, verging on fist-pumping Bee Gees vocals. I'm like the Bee Gees' sad sister on that one. I let rip a bit more."

    Pieces Lyrics

A reason to live, reason to love
You gave me them both and more yet,
A reason to fall, and a reason to hide
    Suddenly all I'm left with

I was so sure this was real, but
Now I'm sure of nothing at all

I had to shatter to Pieces
You made me reveal myself, reveal myself
So if you no longer need them
Then give them to someone else, to someone else

    Take what you gave
    And throw it away
    Now everything's changed, it's misplaced
Nothing to say, 'cause I'm not the same.
It's almost as if we just met.

I was so sure this was real but
Now I'm sure of nothing at all

I had to shatter to pieces
You made me reveal myself, reveal myself
Now that you no longer need them
I'll give them to someone else, to someone else

It's illogical, I was nothing without you
    But you ought to know
I was lost when I had found you

I had to shatter to pieces
Made me reveal myself, reveal myself
Now that you no longer them, I'll give them someone else.
    To someone else

I had to shatter to pieces
Made me reveal myself, reveal myself
Now that you no longer them
    I'll give them someone else.
    To someone else

  • This slow-building tender ballad finds Jessie Ware a broken woman after the end of a relationship. However she realizes such break-ups are an important step towards self discovery. Ware co-wrote the song with Jimmy Napes and William "Tourist" Phillips, who also collaborated with Sam Smith on his "Stay With Me" hit tune. The cut was produced by Emile Haynie of Lana Del Rey's Born To Die album fame.
