5AM Lyrics

5AM
  • This tune finds Katy singing about that moment after a night spent clubbing when the music's over but you're helplessly overpowered by the voice in your head telling you to keep going:

"I need somebody to calm me down
    A little loving like Valium
I need somebody to knock me out."

Katy told Q magazine "The song is about going home, realizing you are a bit lonely and there is no one better to spend your time with. It's been quite a while since I had a cuddle."
  • Katy described the song's infectious house beat as "uncomfortable, something I like but I shouldn't."
  • The song was produced by London-based producer Geeneus, who worked with Katy on much of her 2011 debut On a Mission. This was one of seven tracks he manned the boards for Little Red. "There are quite a few [Geeneus] tracks on the album… He's definitely a massive part of it," Katy noted to Billboard magazine. "He's kind of like my Timbaland to Missy Elliott."

    Behind These Hazel Eyes Lyrics

    Seems like just yesterday
You were a part of me
I used to stand so tall
I used to be so strong
    Your arms around me tight
    Everything, it felt so right
Unbreakable like nothing could go wrong

    Now I can't breathe
    No, I can't sleep
    I'm barely hanging on

    [Chorus]
    Here I am
    Once again
    I'm torn into pieces
    Can't deny it
    Can't pretend
Just thought you were the one
    Broken up deep inside
But you won't get to see the tears I cry
    Behind These Hazel Eyes

    I told you everything
Opened up and let you in
You made me feel alright for once in my life
Now all that's left of me
Is what I pretend to be
So together but so broken up inside

    'Cause I can't breathe
    No, I can't sleep
    I'm barely hanging on

    [Chorus]

Swallow me then spit me out
For hating you, I blame myself
Just seeing you, it kills me now
    Now I don't cry
    On the outside, anymore!

    [Chorus: x2]

    Behind These Hazel Eyes
  • This is a true song about Clarkson's ex boyfriend, who broke up with her and got married a month later. The song is about being hurt by someone you were once close to.
  • The song almost didn't make it to the album. It had different lyrics, but Kelly thought of new lyrics at the last minute.
  • The video is based heavily on Clarkson's own personal experiences. She is credited with the concept and ideas behind it; it was directed by Joseph Kahn. The video did very well on MTV's TRL, becoming a regular #1 request. Finally, fifty days later, on August 3, 2005, the video was retired from the Top 10 countdown. Clarkson holds the record for the longest stay by a female at #1 with 33 days, nearly surpassing the record previously set by The Backstreet Boys.

    Love Is A Silent Thief
  • The presence of Katie Melua's husband, former superbike champion James Toseland, looms largely over her sixth album Ketevan. This song, for instance, explores difficulties relationships face. "You don't suddenly get married and everything is rosy all the time," Katy told The Sun. "He still doesn't recycle properly."
  • The album title refers to Georgian-born Katie Melua's proper first name, Ketevan. She is known as Ketino to her family.

    I Predict A Riot Lyrics

    Watching the people get lairy
Is not very pretty I tell thee
Walking through town is quite scary
    And not very sensible either
A friend of a friend he got beaten
He looked the wrong way at a policeman
Would never have happened to Smeaton
    And old Leodiensian

    [Chorus]
    I Predict A Riot, I predict a riot
    I predict a riot, I predict a riot

I tried to get in my taxi
A man in a tracksuit attacked me
He said that he saw it before me
Wants to get things a bit gory
Girls run around with no clothes on
To borrow a pound for a condom
If it wasn't for chip fat, well they'd be frozen
    They're not very sensible

    [Chorus]

And if there's anybody left in here
That doesn't want to be out there

    Watching the people get lairy
Is not very pretty I tell thee
Walking through town is quite scary
    And not very sensible

    [Chorus]

And if there's anybody left in here
That doesn't want to be out there

    I Predict A Riot
  • This song refers to closing time (11pm) in pubs in the UK, which means people being very drunk and lots of fights. Closing time was eventually moved back in the UK, which spread out the drunkenness.
  • The song depicts some colorful British characters; "Man in a tracksuit attacks me," "Girls run around with no clothes on, to borrow a pound for a condom, if it wasn't for chip fat, well they'd be frozen."
  • "Lairy" is British slang for rough and abusive.
  • The line, "Would never have happened to Smeaton" refers to John Smeaton High School in Leeds, where the band comes from. John Smeaton (1724-1792) was a civil engineer from Leeds.
  • The Kaiser Chiefs are from Leeds and as Leeds United supporters they named themselves after former Leeds player Lucas Radebbe's club in South Africa.
  • Kaiser Chiefs played this at Live 8, where they opened the US show. Live 8 was a series of concerts Bob Geldof put together to spur activism in light of the G8 Summit.
  • In the Guardian newspaper, February 24 2006, Kaiser Chiefs drummer Nick Hodgson said: "I used to DJ with my friend Nick at the Cockpit in Leeds. We'd drive home past a big nightclub and there were always lots of police and people fighting. I went home and wrote the riff on the piano and started singing some words. It says: 'A friend of a friend, he got beaten.' That was a friend of Nick the DJ. At our club night, Pigs, we had a band on, Black Wire. They were going mad and so were the crowd. You could see the bouncers moving in and I said to the club's boss, 'I predict a riot.' The structure was there, then everyone invented their own parts. Ricky [Wilson] wrote the second verse. Smeaton was John Smeaton, a leading figure in the development of Leeds; an 'Old Leodensian' is someone from Leeds. We thought maybe it was too punky but our manager thought it sounded like 10cc meets the Clash. I was pleased with that. When you play a song to other people you can tell if it's good or bad."
  • In an interview with NME, lead singer Ricky Wilson explained the only way to write a universal song is to not try to write a universal song: "It's weird because people get it when you write personally. If we'd have tried to write a song about being at a club and having a time, it wouldn't work because it wouldn't be us. So, we've gone back to that on this record, which is don't worry about the outside world; be yourself, and the rest will fall into place."

    Because Of You Lyrics

    I will not make
The same mistakes that you did
    I will not let myself
Cause my heart so much misery
    I will not break
The way you did, you fell so hard
    I've learned the hard way
To never let it get that far

    Because Of You
I never stray too far from the sidewalk
    Because of you
I learned to play on the safe side so I don't get hurt
    Because of you
I find it hard to trust not only me, but everyone around me
    Because of you
    I am afraid

    I lose my way
And it's not too long before you point it out
    I cannot cry
Because I know that's weakness in your eyes
    I'm forced to fake
A smile, a laugh everyday of my life
    My heart can't possibly break
When it wasn't even whole to start with

    Because of you
I never stray too far from the sidewalk
    Because of you
I learned to play on the safe side so I don't get hurt
    Because of you
I find it hard to trust not only me, but everyone around me
    Because of you
    I am afraid

    I watched you die
I heard you cry every night in your sleep
    I was so young
    You should have known
Better than to lean on me
You never thought of anyone else
    You just saw your pain
And now I cry in the middle of the night
    For the same damn thing

    Because of you
I never stray too far from the sidewalk
    Because of you
I learned to play on the safe side so I don't get hurt
    Because of you
I try my hardest just to forget everything
    Because of you
I don't know how to let anyone else in
    Because of you
    I'm ashamed of my life
    Because it's empty
    Because of you
    I am afraid

    Because of you

    Because Of You
  • Clarkson wrote this about her parents' divorce when she was 6 years old. The song might be aimed at her mom. When the divorce happened, her mom was always busy and little Kelly had to make sandwiches for herself to eat.
  • In the song, Clarkson sings about trying not to make the same mistakes her parents did, and how because of the divorce, she is scared to fall in love, in fear of going through the same pain her parents did.
  • On her Breakaway DVD, Clarkson explains that she started writing this long before she won American Idol. Kelly was 16 when she was with friends one night and they were talking about the influence that older people/peers have on you and started writing it. She sent a demo tape of the song to producers David Hodges and Ben Moody (formerly of Evanescence), who liked the song and worked on it with her.
  • Clarkson told Entertainment Weekly why she'd like to be remembered for this song in a 2011 interview: "I think because I worked so damn hard to get it on an album and just everyone was against it. There was some blood, sweat and tears going on there. I think I'm most proud of that song—just getting it on an album because no one liked it until it hit # 1 worldwide and everybody was on board."
  • Clarkson told the UK newspaper The Guardian: "You may as well grab a knife. That song really is the most depressing one I've ever written. I tried to get it on Thankful, and was laughed at and told I wasn't a good writer. So then I tried to get it on Breakaway – and the label saw the results, people responding to it, and allowed it to become a single. Then took credit for its success, of course."
  • Clarkson revealed that she burst into tears after playing this song for the first time to Sony record executive Clive Davis. "I cried because he hated it and told me verbatim that I was a 'sh--ty writer who should be grateful for the gifts that he bestows upon me,'" she said. "He continued on about how the song didn't rhyme and how I should just shut up and sing. This was devastating coming from a man who I, as a young girl, considered a musical hero and was so honored to work with."

Lead singer Aled Phillips told The Sun it was the first song that they wrote for the record and it became the blueprint. "It was there early," he explained, "and it set the foundation for everything. The dance floor's a temptress
Can't make out what your saying

But you rub me the right way,
    With your child-like persuasion

I got my hands in my pockets
    And I'm crossing my fingers
    She'll find I'm a simple
Stone washed up and so slow

I'd take one in the Temple
    I'd take one for you
I'd take one in the temple (temple)
    I'd take one for you
I'd take one in the temple (temple)
    I'd take one for you

    I feel all amiss now
    I'm tossed in the scatter
And your eyes keep on shifting,
To the boys that don't matter
I've got my hands in my pockets
    I'm still crossing my fingers

I'd take one in the temple
    I'd take one for you
I'd take one in the temple (temple)

  • This song about taking a shot in the head for a prospective lover was penned in a South African hotel room. "Obviously things changed when we got in the studio, like the intro, but it felt like a '90s song to me," vocalist Caleb Followill told Billboard magazine. "That's when we were listening to a lot of music, and still when we play it, we crack up the whole time, this the most radio friendly song…"

The Mechanical Bull Deluxe edition bonus track "Last Mile Home" was penned the same night.
  • According to drummer Nathan Followill, the breakdown in the song is the band's ode to Irish rockers Thin Lizzy.
  • The band have performed the song on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Late Night with Jimmy Fallon and Saturday Night Live.
  • The song's music video splits between sepia-toned Super 8 footage shot around the band's home town of Nashville and shots of an in-studio performance of the song. "The Super 8 footage was shot by the band, myself and director Paul Greenhouse on the day of the video and the days leading up to it," said Casey McGrath, chief creative officer at the Phear Creative, the agency behind the clip. "Nashville (is a) part of the band's life that is extremely near and dear to their hearts."

A Prince and two Princesses of Leon can be seen on hand in the studio: Caleb's daughter Dixie, Nathan's daughter Violet, and Matthew's son Knox.

    On The Chin
  • Caleb Followill's lyrics for this whiskey-soaked Country number were inspired by the support he's got from his buddy, JD. He explained to Billboard magazine: "We've always been each other's best friends, because that's all we had. We were picking up and moving, every town we went to we knew we weren't gonna be there too long, so we knew, 'don't make too close of friends, and don't fall in love.' Being in Nashville, I finally had a buddy outside of the band, and he was just kind of always, no matter what you need, he's there. He's just a good guy. And that song kind of came at a time when I needed a friend, and I wrote it about him. And he's scared of the water. He's scared of sharks."
  • For bassist Jared Followill, the song can be interpreted as being about the mutual support the family members have for each other. He told HitFix : "So many of our songs can be interpreted in so many different ways. At the time you can actually write something and it can be completely abstract to you at the time and then a year later, something will happen to you and and you'll listen back and be like, 'Wow, that song sounds like it was written perfectly for the situation.' But that song, particularly, the way Caleb started writing those lyrics, it was for one of his friends, his buddy, JD. It's actually about that, then you hear it and it can mean so much. It can fit so many different situations. It can be for all of us together, it can be for our wives. I like songs that are open to interpretation."

God Gave Rock And Roll To You II Lyrics

God gave rock and roll to you, gave rock and roll to you
Put it in the soul of everyone
Do you know what you want? You don't know for sure
You don't feel right, you can't find a cure
And you're gettin' less than what you're lookin' for

You don't have money or a fancy car
And you're tired of wishin' on a falling star
You gotta put your faith in a loud guitar

God gave rock and roll to you, gave rock and roll to you
Gave rock and roll to everyone (oh yeah)
God gave rock and roll to you, gave rock and roll to you
Put it in the soul of everyone

    Now listen
If you wanna be a singer, or play guitar
Man, you gotta sweat or you won't get far
Cause it's never too late to work nine-to-five

You can take a stand, or you can compromise
You can work real hard or just fantasize
But you don't start livin' 'till you realize
    I gotta tell ya
God gave rock and roll to you, gave rock and roll to you
Gave rock and roll to everyone
God gave rock and roll to you, gave rock and roll to you
    Put it in the soul

God gave rock and roll to you (to everyone he gave the song to be sung)
Gave rock and roll to you, gave rock and roll to everyone

God gave rock and roll to you (to everyone he gave the song to be sung)
Gave rock and roll to you, saved rock and roll for everyone
    Saved rock and roll

God gave rock and roll to you, gave rock and roll to you
Gave rock and roll to everyone
God gave rock and roll to you, gave rock and roll to you
Put it in the soul of everyone

God gave rock and roll to you, gave rock and roll to you
Gave rock and roll to everyone
God gave rock and roll to you, gave rock and roll to you put it in the soul
I know life sometimes can get tough and I know life sometimes can be a drag
But people, we have been given a gift, we have been given a road
And that road's name is rock and roll
Gave rock and roll to everyone
God gave rock and roll to you, gave rock and roll to you
Put it in the soul of everyone
God gave rock and roll to you, gave rock and roll to you
Gave rock and roll to everyone

God Gave Rock And Roll To You II
  • This is a reworking of a 1973 song by the band Argent titled "God Gave Rock 'n' Roll to You." Kiss' version adds lyrics dedicated to Eric Carr, who lost his battle with carcinoma in 1991.

The Argent song was written by their lead singer Russ Ballard, who got a songwriting credit on the Kiss song along with Paul Stanley, Gene Simmons , and their producer Bob Ezrin.
  • This was the last Kiss song that Eric Carr appeared on. Carr was their drummer since 1982, and died of cancer in 1991 at age 42.

Carr also appeared in the video, which was shot while he was being treated for the disease. Bruce Kulick, who was the Kiss guitarist at the time, recalled in the book Tales From The Stage : "He played his heart out. He had more energy than I did. I couldn’t believe it, but it meant a lot to him. You can see in his face in the video and photos that it’s kind of drawn. You can tell that he wasn’t healthy and fighting a disease, but I must say that he was very brave."
  • In an interview with VH1, Gene Simmons said: "It's not just a cover song for a soundtrack, but a testament to Eric Carr, and I think a lot of people don't realize that."
  • Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley share lead vocals on this song, which they hadn't done since "Shout It Out Loud."

Oh no, did I get too close oh?
Oh, did I almost see what's really on the inside?
    All your insecurities
    All the dirty laundry
Never made me blink one time

    Unconditional, Unconditionally
    I will love you unconditionally
    There is no fear now
Let go and just be free
    I will love you unconditionally

Come just as you are to me
    Don't need apologies
Know that you are all worthy
I'll take your bad days with your good
Walk through this storm I would
I'd do it all because I love you, I love you

    Unconditional, unconditionally
    I will love you unconditionally
    There is no fear now
Let go and just be free
    I will love you unconditionally

So open up your heart and just let it begin
Open up your heart, and just let it begin
Open up your heart, and just let it begin
    Open up your heart
Acceptance is the key to be
    To be truly free
Will you do the same for me?

    Unconditional, unconditionally
    I will love you unconditionally
And there is no fear now
Let go and just be free

    Unconditionally
  • This big power ballad was released as the second single from Prism, and was the follow-up to "Roar."

"It's a love song and it's different from 'Roar' - it's not eighth-notey," said Perry. "I think it's a universal love song that everyone's going to be able to relate to no matter the age, no matter male or female. It's my favorite song off the record."
  • Perry penned this ode to falling in love with Swedish hitmaker Max Martin, American producer Dr. Luke and Canadian songwriter Cirkut. The same trio also contributed to "Roar." During a discussion at the 2013 ASCAP "I Create Music" Expo in Los Angeles, Perry said as a team they have certain strengths. "With Max, it's melody choices," she said "Luke is production and I'm topline and melody."
  • The song finds Perry singing about looking past her beau's flaws and loving him for who he is. "There is no fear now... I will love you unconditionally," she belts over woodblock percussion and a dramatic bass line. It is one of two tracks on Prism that were inspired by Perry's boyfriend John Mayer— the other one being the Deluxe edition bonus track "It Takes Two."
  • The song's lyric video was helmed by photographer, screenwriter and director Aya Tanimura, who is a member of Mensa. It features a lesbian couple who are played by models Janell Shirtcliff and Erika Linder.
  • Perry spoke about the song's meaning during an interview with KIIS FM. She explained: "Not only is it about those different varieties of loves, it's about when you are in love with someone and there's full acceptance. The highs and the lows. All the flaws. The zits. The smells. The whole gamet, you know? Sometimes I remember being scared to be accepted in relationships and I know that everybody else goes through that and, 'Will they love my true self? Will they love all the things that I do when nobody's looking?"

Perry added: "You know because we are weirdoes. We pick our nose and we make disgusting noises with our body and we're not always the most presentable things but someone's gotta love us and it's about that unconditional love. It's about that high, almost spiritual type of love."
  • Perry felt inspired to pen the song as a result of a visit to Madagascar with UNICEF. She decided to write lyrics about what it means to care for someone in the purest form. "We live in such a world that is run by social status and material possession, and it can get really overwhelming and tiring to keep up with that - people are actually turned on by the amount of likes they have; it's crazy that our minds think that way these days," Perry explained.

"And so I went to the top of this mountain, I saw all these children, and the love that they had towards each other, they had no idea what Twitter or Facebook or any of that stuff was, they didn't care about it," she continued. "It was this unconditional love between all of them. It was that kind of pure love that's unaffected by the trends of the world."
  • Perry singled out this as her favorite Prism track as it passed the "goose bump test." She explained to MTV News: "There's this test that I do in the studio, after a song's complete and you've tracked some vocals. It's kind of like the goose bump test. If, every time you hear it, it gives you goose bumps, it's hitting a chord inside of you that's really important,. It's an emotional chord inside of you."

"I love this song because not only can it be a romantic, intimate song, but it can be about the type of love that a mother has when she sees her first child, or best friends or partners," Perry added. "It's a transcendent love, it's not just relationship status."
  • The Brent Bonacorso directed video is centered around an elegant Renaissance-era ball. The clip explores the impact of love using dramatic imagery and was influenced by such films as Dangerous Liaisons and Anna Karenina. "It doesn't have a complete narrative. I do that all the time; I usually have quite a big story line," Perry told MTV News. "This time I wanted to give a lot of gorgeous, beautiful looks, which I don't usually go for. But it's mostly just a beautiful video that is supposed to evoke this power of love."
  • Bonacorso explained to MTV News how he attempted to capture the song's lyrical concepts in the video. "When she sings this song she doesn't sing it lightly. This love that she speaks of is like a force of nature, epic storm and a tempest, and that's definitely something I wanted to capture," he said, adding that he wanted to capture a "more mysterious, elegant and sophisticated world to live in... less about a time period and more about creating an impression and a feeling."

That "feeling" is expressed using various images, including a car crash, which is a visual metaphor for the power of true love. "One of the key images that I think was pivotal in the video and just a very important concept to me. I once described the experience of falling in love like being hit by a car; suddenly your world is just so violently and dramatically changed. It hits you out of the blue," Bonacorso explained. "I shared this with Katy and she really loved that concept and really identified with it immediately, that she felt the same way."

    You're Dancing With The Devil
    You're dancing with the devil

    Whoa oh, whoa oh
Our clipped wings will never hold us down,
    Whoa oh, whoa oh
We are kings from the underground
We, we came, to rain on your parade
And if we die, then, who will be your remedy,
so shut the f*** up, we're about to leave a legacy.

We are louder the your bulls***
So, you're just dancing with the devil
We are louder then your bulls***
So, just dancing with the devil

    Whoa oh, whoa oh,
Our clipped wings will never hold us down,
    Whoa oh, whoa oh,
We are kings from the underground
We, we came, to rain on your parade
And if we die, then, who will be your remedy

    Dancing With The Devil
  • Electronic dance music group Krewella teamed up with their fellow Chicago native, Fall Out Boy vocalist Patrick Stump, to pen this song. "Working with Patrick was so cool because he really opened the door to new styles of writing for us," said vocalist Jahan Yousaf to Radio.com . "It inspired us to resurrect an older song, 'Dancing with the Devil,' that we never knew how to finish. [Stump] really helped and guided us in that direction, to turn it into the very pop-punk, metal-inspired song that's on the album."

The Play Hard track also features blink-182 drummer Travis Barker.
  • Asked about the collaboration by HMV.com , Krewella said: "Being in the studio with Patrick Stump for 'Dancing with the Devil' was such a therapy session! We spent about 45 minutes letting everything off our chest, jotting down notes of phrases and one-liners, and Patrick had a magical way of helping us piece all the ideas together."

They added: "Our Travis Barker relationship was through the email by exchanging stems back and forth- hopefully we'll get to meet him in person someday!"

    Here's the thing
    We started out friends
It was cool, but it was all pretend
    Yeah, yeah
    Since you been gone

You're dedicated, you took the time
Wasn't long till I called you mine
    Yeah, yeah
    Since you been gone

And all you'd ever hear me say
Is how I picture me with you
That's all you'd ever hear me say

    But since you been gone
I can breathe for the first time
    I'm so moving on
    Yeah, yeah
    Thanks to you
Now I get what I want
    Since you been gone

How can I put it? You put me on
I even fell for that stupid love song
    Yeah, yeah
    Since you been gone

How come I've never heard you say
I just want to be with you?
Guess you never felt that way

    But since you been gone
I can breathe for the first time
    I'm so moving on
    Yeah, yeah
    Thanks to you
Now I get what I want
    Since you been gone

You had your chance, you blew it

    Since U Been Gone
  • Clarkson (from Entertainment Weekly, September 2, 2005): "Hazel Eyes is about the dipstick who completely screwed up and now is unhappy and you're happy. And then you're just shouting praises at the fact that he's miserable in Since U Been Gone."
  • The music video for this song is about a girl going into her ex-boyfriend's house and destroying everything. It's what everyone wants to do in that situation but isn't crazy enough to do it.
  • This won a Grammy for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance.
  • With two Grammy Awards from this album, Clarkson is the most successful winner of American Idol to date.
  • This song almost didn't make it onto the Breakaway album; when Clarkson heard the first, acoustic version of the song, she didn't like it. It wasn't until it was given a rocking treatment that she warmed to the song.
  • This was written and produced by Lukasz "Dr. Luke" Gottwald and Max Martin. Gottwald recalled the genesis of the song to Billboard magazine: "That was a conscious move by Max and myself, because we were listening to alternative and indie music and talking about some song-I don't remember what it was. I said, 'Ah, I love this song,' and Max was like, 'If they would just write a damn pop chorus on it!' It was driving him nuts, because that indie song was sort of on six, going to seven, going to eight, the chorus comes . . . and it goes back down to five. It drove him crazy. And when he said that, it was like, light bulb. 'Why don't we do that, but put a big chorus on it?' It worked."
  • It was Sony Music chief creative officer Clive Davis' idea to give the song to Clarkson, but Martin and Gottwald, certain that they had written a rock hit, were initially reluctant. "They weren't prepared for the casting idea," Davis recalled to Billboard magazine. "Max was looking to move on from what he had done with Backstreet Boys, and I really spent time convincing them that an American Idol winner could bring all the feeling and passion that was required to the song."
  • Clive Davis claimed in his memoir, The Soundtrack of My Life, that Clarkson burst into 'hysterical sobbing' in his office when he demanded that this song be included on her album.

"Not true at all," Clarkson responded. "His stories and songs are mixed up. I did want more guitars added to the original demo and Clive did not. Max, Luke and I still fought for the bigger sound and we prevailed and I couldn't be more proud of the life of that song. I resent him dampening that song in any way."
  • Ester Dean and Skylar Astin perform the song during the audition sequences of the 2012 musical comedy film, Pitch Perfect.
  • Dr. Luke and Max Martin originally wrote the song with Pink in mind, but she turned it down. They then reached out to Hilary Duff but she rejected the song because she couldn't reach its higher notes. Clive Davis then convinced the producers to give the song to Clarkson.

How come what's wrong with you
Darling faces are some we found
    Let's do what devils do
    Hiding in shadows, no-ones around
    Why can't I torture you
Giving pain you take it away
    The little things you do
Simply I love your evil ways
Your ways, your ways, your ways

    Prey For Me,
I think I owe you an apology
Somehow you bring the violence out in me
I'm just a shell of what I used to be
Passion is sometimes a fucked up thing for me

    This time it follows you
Nothings left, your dead on the ground
    How can I covet you
Give you hell and you can't be found
    My soul infested you
Blackened thoughts they run through your head
    The little things you do
Simply I wish you were dead
Were dead, were dead, were dead

    Prey for me
I think I owe you an apology
Somehow you bring the violence out in me
I'm just a shell of what I used to be

Dreams Of The San Joaquin Lyrics

    I'm sending you some money
I wish it could be more
But it's harder than I thought
To find the work I came here for

This place is just as pretty
As I pictured it to be
And a man in need of work's
An all too common sight to see

Each morning as the trucks roll in
    A lucky few climb on
And the rest of us are left to wonder
    Where the dream has gone
    Where the dream has gone

They say the Sierras melt with the rain
    And race through the valley
    Like blood through the vein
    Turning the lowland
    From golden to green
    To harvest forever
Our Dreams Of The San Joaquin

    Every day I struggle
With the distance and the fear
That I will not return or find
A way to bring you here

    My emptiness grows deeper
    I feel my spirit fall
As night comes like a blanket
That brings no sleep at all

I only hope that time will find
A way to work things out
    And we will be together
In the life we dream about
    The life we dream about

    Repeat Chorus and add line:
    We'll harvest forever
In dreams of the San Joaquin

They say the Sierras melt with the rain
    And race through the valley
    Like blood through the vein
    Turning the lowland
    From golden to green
    To harvest forever

    Dreams Of The San Joaquin
  • Kenny Rogers has had considerable success throughout his career with songs that tell stories ("Ruby, Don't Take Your Love to Town," "The Gambler," "Lucille"). He continues the tradition with this tune. "It's the story of a worker in the fields of the San Joaquin valley in the 30s and 40s, during the height of the depression and the Dust Bowl," he explained to Billboard magazine. "If you studied history, you know that farmers quit working the soil in Oklahoma and went west. So, all that soil died and created the dust bowl. Eventually, everyone ended up west of the San Joaquin up on the mountaintops."

"The song is a letter that this worker is writing home to his wife," Rogers continued. "He says 'I'm sending you this money. I wish it could be more, but it's harder than I thought to find the work I came here for. It's very poignant to me, and almost cinematic."

    I heard you're feeling nothing's going right
Why don't you let me stop by
The clock is ticking, running out of time
So we should party, all night
So cover your eyes, I have a surprise
I hope you got a healthy appetite

If you wanna dance, if you want it all
You know that I'm the girl that you should call

    Boy when you're with me
    I'll give you a taste
Make it like your Birthday everyday
I know you like it sweet
So you can have your cake
Give you something good to celebrate

    So make a wish
I'll make it like your birthday everyday
    I'll be your gift
Give you something good to celebrate

    Pop your Perignon
    We can get it on
    So hot and heavy
    Till dawn
    I got you spinning
    Like a disco ball
    I'll have them playing
    Your song

    We're living the life
    We're doing it right
    You're never gonna be unsatisfied
    If you wanna dance
    If you want it all
You know I'm the girl that you should call

    But when you're with me

Give you something good to celebrate

    Happy birthday

So let me get you in your birthday suit
It's time to bring out the big balloons
So let me get you in your birthday suit
It's time to bring out the big, big, big, big, big, big balloons

    Boy when you're with me

    Birthday
  • This upbeat jam finds Katy promising to give some lucky person the best birthday ever. The exuberant track was written by the singer in collaboration with Bonnie McKee, Henry Walter, Max Martin and Dr. Luke. The same team also penned Prism's lead single, "Roar."
  • Katy sings some of the song in a Mariah Carey-esque higher register. "I wanted to do something that Mariah Carey would have put on her first record," Perry said while introducing the song during Prism's listening party.
  • The song's live brass is provided by the Saturday Night Live house band horn section, which gives us another Mariah Carey connection. The multi-octave songstress employed this same horn section for her performance of "If It's Over" during her 1992 MTV Unplugged special.
  • The song finds Perry seducing a lover with a bunch of sexual innuendos. Bonnie McKee told MTV News: "The bridge actually the thing about the 'birthday suit' and the 'big balloons,' I was not in the room for that. I had no idea. I didn't hear it again until it had been mixed when I came in and listened to the bridge and I was like 'Katy, what did you do when I left the room?' It was really funny. I was laughing out loud."
  • The single's cover art depicts Katy and her sister Angela Hudson at a 1990 birthday party.
  • The song's music video features Perry playing five characters; "The World's Worst Birthday Party Entertainers." They are Goldie The Dancer, Jewish MC Yosef Shulem, Kriss The Crown, Princess Mandee and Ace the Animal Trainer. The prank-a-thon clip shows Perry crashing various real life birthday parties in disguise and ruining them.
  • Perry revealed to MTV News how she had to con party planners into thinking they were taking part in a reality TV show for the video. She explained, "We had to keep this super top secret. Of course, I had to go completely undercover, so it was skewed as a reality show called Birthday Blowout. So people signed up their birthday parties for this crazy reality show where anything could go, and anything did go...! The whole thing was staged."

    You send a text
It's like the wind changed your mind
    We were best friends
Yeah, we were burning our lives
With every kiss, and every letter
    Every promise of forever, oh
    But you hit send
And disappeared in front of my eyes

And now you're just a Ghost
When I look back never would have known that
    You could be so cold
Like a stranger vanish like a vapor
There's just an echo where your heart used to be
    Now I see it clearly
And there's just a pillow where your head used to sleep
    My vision's 20/20

    I see through you now
    Something is tight
Now that I have made up my mind
    I'll be alright
It doesn't harm me at night

'Cause every gift, every letter, every promise of forever
    Now, it's out of sight
    Like you were never alive

And now you're just a ghost
When I look back never would have known that
    You could be so cold
Like a stranger vanish like a vapor
There's just an echo where your heart used to be

    My vision's 20/20
I see through you now, now, now, now, now
    Now, now, now, now, now

    So rest in piece
I see you on the other side

And now you're just a ghost
When I look back never would have known that
    You could be so cold
Like a stranger vanish like a vapor
There's just an echo where your heart used to be

    Ghost
  • This ethereal song finds Perry recalling her failed marriage with Russell Brand. "We were best friends... now, you're just a ghost," she croons over synth stabs. Perry penned the tune with Bonnie McKee, Henry Walter, Max Martin and Dr. Luke. The same team also wrote the Prism tracks, "Roar," "Legendary Lovers" and "Birthday."
  • The lyric: "You sent a text. It's like the wind changed your mind" references how Russell Brand coldly delivered the news he wanted a divorce.
  • This is one of several tracks on Prism that were inspired by the breakdown of Perry's marriage to Russell Brand. When asked by the UK newspaper The Sunday Times how their breakup inspired her new album, the singer replied: "What I wanted to call this record at first was Adult Reality. Teenage Dream was me so high on that cotton-candy cloud, and then it's like I got punched in the face and kicked down the stairs a couple of times."

"I had to face the reality that things are not always on cloud nine," she added. "I was down and out, I'd lost hope, all of my self-confidence had been shattered."

I lost myself in fear of losing you
    I wish I didn't do, but I did
I lost my own, my own identity
Forgot that you picked me, for me

But now, I don't negotiate with insecurities
They always seem to get the best of me
I found I had to love myself, the way I want you to

Love Me, no more second guessing
    No, there’s no more questioning
I’ll be the one defining who I'm gonna be
No concealing feelings, or changing seasonally
I’m gonna love myself, the way I want you to love me

Sometimes I wish my skin was a costume
That I could just unzip, and strip
But who I am is who I'm meant to be
And it's who you are in love, in love with
So now, I don't negotiate with insecurities
You're gonna have to take a back seat
I know I have to love myself, the way I want you to

Love me, no more second guessing
    No, there’s no more questioning
I’ll be the one defining who I'm gonna be
No concealing feelings, or changing seasonally
I’m gonna love myself, the way I want you to love me

No more standing in my own way
Let's get deeper, let's get closer
No more standing in my own way

    Love Me
  • This self-empowerment tune was informed by Perry's dissolved marriage to Russell Brand. "I lost myself in fear of losing you," the Santa Barbara native sings, before later concluding, "I know I have to love myself, the way I want you to love me." Perry described this as a song "about loving yourself the way you want to be loved."
  • The racing Electro-Pop track was produced in Stockholm by Bloodshy of Miike Snow, whom Perry has wanted to work with ever since he helmed Britney Spears' "Toxic."

We are the ones taking all the pain
    Falling on our faces
    They don’t care anyway
    Anyway, now
You’re the one that makes me feel like I’m alive
You’re the one that pushes me all the time
    All the time, now

    We are hard and grey
Always fate, to do what they say
    Calling me deranged
Feeling power, I must take its place some way

    Never gonna run away
    Seeking out the path
But the pain always gets in the way
    Slowly watch me die
    I’m insane, so dangerous
Don’t you dare get in my way
    Throwing in the towel
    Got me strained, so betrayed
Get the fuck out of my way
Looking at my thoughts, I take my time
Pounding all these spikes in my veins

We are the ones reaching out in vain
    Trying to solve our problems
They won’t go away, go away now
You’re the one that makes me feel like I’m alive
You’re the one that pushes me all the time
    All the time, now

    Got me strained, so betrayed
Get the fuck out of my way
Looking at my thoughts, I take my time
Pounding all these spikes in my veins

Pounding all these spikes in my veins
Pounding all these spikes in my veins
Pounding all these spikes in my veins

    Never gonna run away
    Seeking out my path
But the pain always gets in the way
    Slowly watch me die
    I’m insane, so dangerous
Don’t you dare get in my way
    Throwing in the towel
    Got me strained, so betrayed
Get the fuck out of my way
Looking at my thoughts, I take my time
Pounding all these spikes in my veins

Pounding all these spikes in my veins
Pounding all these spikes in my veins
Pounding all these spikes in my veins
Pounding all these spikes in my veins
Pounding all these spikes in my veins
Looking at my thoughts, I take my time
Pounding all these spikes in my veins

    Spike In My Veins
  • Jonathan Davis originally wrote and recorded this tune with the Dutch Electronic music trio Noisia for inclusion on J Devil's debut album, but it ended up being reworked as a Korn song. Davis told The Pulse of Radio that Brian "Head" Welch 's return on guitar after an absence of nearly a decade was a good balance to his own continued fascination with electronic music. "We wanted to make a record that everybody was happy with, and Head coming back, I think, was great, 'cause me and him butted heads," he said. "'Cause he really is on the rock side and I was on the electronic side, and it was good having the compromise on both sides. It was just good for the creative process."
  • The David Dinetz directed video finds Korn taking their concerns over celebrity-led news overtaking deeper issues like governmental data surveillance. Davis told Rolling Stone, "We are all so caught up in watching crazy media on the Internet and TV that we are manipulated into ignoring that our privacy has all but disappeared."
  • The reasoning behind the video was an attempt was to highlight the band's theory that the government uses celebrities like Miley Cyrus, Kanye West and Justin Bieber to take our attention away from what Barack Obama has been doing while in office. For instance, the National Defense Authorization Act was signed by the President on the same day of Miley's 2013 MTV Video Music Awards performance, yet the latter got the most media attention.

"I think that our government uses those people to detract from what's really going on," Davis told TMZ . "The thing with the whole Miley Cyrus stuff at the VMAs, when that went down Obama passed a law that made him basically a dictator. He can imprison whoever he wants. He doesn't have to charge them, he can hold them as long as he wants."

    Underneath the Tree Lyrics

You're here where you should be
Snow is falling as the carols sing
    It just wasn't the same
    Alone on Christmas day
    Presents, what a beautiful sight
Don't mean a thing if you ain't holding me tight
    You're all that I need
    Underneath the Tree
    Tonight

    I'm gonna hold you close
    Make sure that you know
    I was lost before you
    Christmas was cold and grey
    Another holiday alone to celebrate
But then one day everything changed
    You're all I need
    Underneath the tree

You're here where you should be
Snow is falling as the carols sing
    It just wasn't the same
    Alone on Christmas day
    Presents, what a beautiful sight
Don't mean a thing if you ain't holding me tight
    You're all that I need
    Underneath the tree

I found, what I was looking for
A love that's meant for me
    A heart that's mine completely
Knocked me right off my feet
And this year I will fall
    With no worries at all
'Cause you are near and everything's clear
    You're all I need
    Underneath the tree

You're here where you should be
Snow is falling as the carols sing
    It just wasn't the same
    Alone on Christmas day
    Presents, what a beautiful sight
Don't mean a thing if you ain't holding me tight
    You're all that I need
    Underneath the tree

And then one day everything changed
    You're all I need
    Underneath the tree

You're here where you should be
Snow is falling as the carols sing
    It just wasn't the same
    Alone on Christmas day
    Presents, what a beautiful sight
Don't mean a thing if you ain't holding me tight
    You're all that I need
    Underneath the tree
    Tonight

    Underneath the Tree
  • This Phil Spector-sounding song is an optimistic tune that was written by Clarkson with her frequent collaborator, the hit songwriter/producer Greg Kurstin. The song was released as the lead single from the singer's first Christmas album, Wrapped In Red.
  • This isn't the first time that Clarkson has covered holiday music. She recorded the Christmas songs "Oh Holy Night" and "My Grown Up Christmas List" on the compilation American Idol: The Great Holiday Classics. Also, the Texas native's version of "I'll Be Home for Christmas" reached the #93 position on the Hot 100 in 2011, and she lent her voice to Blake Shelton's "Cheers, It's Christmas" the following year.

    You Alone Lyrics

    In Your hands
    You hold every star
    And You hold my heart
    My beating heart

    With Your voice
    You created life
    And opened up my eyes
    My blinded eyes

There is one like You, no one

    Great is the Lord
    Ruler of all
    You Alone
    Conquered the grave
    You are the way
    You alone
    You alone

    At the cross
    You stretched out Your arms
    Now You wear the scars
    You wear the scars

    At Your name
    Every knee will bow
    Every voice will shout
    We will shout

There is one like You, no one

    Great is the Lord
    Ruler of all
    You alone
    Conquered the grave
    You are the way
    You alone
    You alone

We lift our holy hands to You our Savior
Your love is shining through the dark
    We wanna see Your kingdom
    Reign forever
Jesus we worship who You are

There is one like You, no one
There is one like You, no one
There is one like You, no one
There is one like You, no one

    Great is the Lord
    Ruler of all
    You alone
    Conquered the grave
    You are the way
    You alone

    Great is the Lord
    Ruler of all
    You alone
    Conquered the grave
    You are the way
    You alone
    Jesus, You alone

    You Alone
  • This is the first single to be released from Kutless' eighth studio album. The track has a straightforward message. "Our song 'You Alone' is meant to lift up and glorify the name of God," said the band. "As we look through the Bible, we see many examples of Heavenly worship, which all center around the theme that God is deserving of recognition, majesty, honor, and praise. Through the process of writing this record, we feel that God has been showing us our purpose in leading the body of Christ in worship. The name of Jesus is mighty and powerful. Great is the LORD, ruler of all!"
