Nuthin'

Lecrae is rapping here about people thinking more about what they're saying and promoting. "Humanity is responsible for civilizations, computers, pyramids! We've been created with more potential than what we are talking about in our music," he explained to The Michigan News. "Our aspirations are falling short. Who brags on being a playground all-star? We haven't even explored our NBA potential."

Lecrae raps in his second verse about issues that he feels other rappers should be talking about:

The last line may be a personal reference to Lecrae's cousin who got shot after leaving a party. The rapper referenced the incident on his Church Clothes 2 track, "My Whole Life Changed." ("My cousin walked out a party, bow, got shot

The song's producer Gawvi was inspired to create an up to date version of the 1995 hip-hop single "I Got 5 On It" by the West Coast duo Luniz. Lecrae recalled on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. "Gawvi called me into the studio and said, 'I've got this crazy song,' He's always got a set-up for every song. He can't just play it for you. He's gotta tell you this long story about how he was inspired."

Lecrae loved the beat and started working on lyrics for it that night.

This plays during the trailer for the Disney Channel's original movie Bad Hair Day.

Anomaly Song Chart

According to the Songfacts dictionary, an anomaly is a "deviation or departure from the normal or common order, form, or rule." The concept of Lecrae 's Anomaly album describes how the Christian artist is a product of Hip-Hop, but by staying true to himself and following his own way, he deviates from the norm. He told MTV News "The title of the album has been a running thought in my head for a long time because I've always been a trans-cultural person."

"My friends are from all from different walks of life, I can exist in conservative circles and liberal circles, I walk in the hip-hop, pop and Christian worlds — I can still be me and be embraced in all of those worlds and that makes me an Anomaly."

Anomaly debuted at #1 on the US albums chart, with 88,587 copies sold in its first week. It was Lecrae's first set to reach the peak position and also the first chart-topper for Lecrae's label, Reach Records.

Anomaly also made history by becoming the first long player to debut at the top of the main albums chart and the Gospel Albums chart in the same week.

The song and album title came to Lecrae when when he was wrestling with what it means to be an outsider. He explained to Artist Direct : "It's almost like this intentionality in being an outsider. It's not like you're an outcast and you go, 'Oh well.' It's like, 'Listen, man. I'm actually going to embrace being an outcast and deviate from what's normal on purpose.'"

"An outcast feels more like people pushed you out," Lecrae added. "It does happen, but Anomaly is more like, 'Whether they push me out or not, I'm going to be me. I'm going to be different. That's the way it's going to be.'"

"'Welcome to America' is a special song because I think everyone has a unique perspective on America," he explained to MTV News. "I wrote the song from three different perspectives, so there's three different people who have different perspectives of what America is."

"You've got a guy who's from one community, another guy from a completely different community and then you've got a person who's not from America and [it's] their perspective on what America is," he continued. Lecrae explained the message behind this ode to being different in an interview with Artist Direct : "I think a lot of times entertainers try to carry themselves in this impenetrable picture of perfection," he said. "I'm going to break the status quo. Say I won't. I don't care."

"I'm a dad. I don't mind being a dad, 'Look at all of these shoes I've got. I've got an incredible shoe collection. I'll sell them all and take my kids to Chuck E. Cheese. I don't care. It's not that serious. Let's enjoy life,'" Lecrae added "That's what it's about."

The song features Lecrae's labelmate Andy Mineo. The New York rapper previously provided sung vocals on the Lecrae song "Background" and also contributed towards "Power Trip."

The song's music clip features younger versions of Lecrae and Andy Mineo juxtaposed with their current selves. "The video is fun, it's a throwback and an ode to when hip-hop was fun," Lecrae told MTV News. "A throwback to when I didn't have to pop a molly to have a good time, when dudes could smile and dance."

The video was premièred during halftime of the December 16, 2014 Brooklyn Nets vs. Miami Heat game at the Barclays Center. "Who else can say they did that? I like the innovation of it," Lecae said.

Good, Bad, Ugly Song Chart

This stark electronic track finds Lecrae meditating on two life changing events when he was growing up. In the first verse he recalls the abortion of a child he had with his college girlfriend in 2002 and the second one finds him remembering being molested by his female baby sitter when he was "barely in the first grade."

This is the most personal song that Lecrae has recorded to date. "If I didn't confront the issues on this song head on I would live a guilty, condemned, and shameful life," said the rapper. "All of that is contrary to what I believe about myself. We all have skeletons in our closets. We all have things in our past we will either bury or confront. No one expected me to experience, deal with, or tell the world about these experiences, but I'm healed. So, I wrote this song for the healing of others."

Lecrae recalled the abortion episode and his selfish attitude at the time during a discussion with theologian John Piper and John Ensor, the president of Passion Life Ministries. "I was a young man trying to figure out what I was going to do with life," he said. "I hadn't finished school. I had met the Lord, but I was still trying to get my footing in terms of walking with Jesus. There was so much that happened. Literally, in the middle of that relationship, I was feeling the conviction. I felt like God was giving me opportunities to escape. We were doing drugs and engaged in sexual activity consistently."

"At the time, I believed an urban myth that if you consume enough drugs you would become sterile. I thought we would never get pregnant. I remember we were both working at a call center, and we went out for our smoke break one day, and she hesitated to smoke the cigarette. And that is when she informed me that she was pregnant."

The abortion clinic was around the corner from the girl's house and Lecrae saw the termination as an easy escape from the responsibilities of fatherhood. "After the abortion, I really pretty much shut it out of my mind, literally to the point - it is shameful - I ignored all her calls," he confessed. "I quit dealing with her altogether."

"The last time I saw her I remember she was curled up on a bed crying, and I pushed all of it out of my mind," Lecrae continued. "And what I kept were pictures of her, as a memorial in some senses." (Source of quote Desiring God )
