This single from Lenny Kravitz' Strut album finds him out of control with his feelings for a girl. "This is one of my favorite tracks on the album," he told Billboard magazine. "It was recorded with minimal instrumentation, guitar, bass and drums. The strength of the groove comes from the sparse production which creates space."

The song's music video was directed by Dikayl Rimmasch, who is a filmmaker and photographer based in New York. His resume includes a three-part film series starring Beyoncé and Jay Z for the couple's On the Run tour. Kravitz said of the clip; "I love the Fellini-esque vibe of the video. When I heard the concept, I knew that Dikayl was out of his mind; and that was the attraction."

Rimmasch added: "I couldn't think of anything more surreal. It made me laugh. Lenny went for it. The shoot was chaotic. The day after I walked to the beach with a hangover, laid in the sand, and thought - 'what have I done?'"

Frankenstein Song Chart

After Lenny Kravitz had finished filming Hunger Games, he went home to the Bahamas to record his Strut album. He named each of the songs before he wrote any words, purely on the impressions he got when he recorded the basic tracks. Kravitz then wrote lyrics to correspond to his instinctive titles.

He said regarding this song about Mary Shelley's famous man-made creature, "He was a loving character, but he was also a monster. It's a great metaphor for misunderstood love."

Mary Shelley (1797-1851) was just 19-years-old when she came up with the idea for Frankenstein during a trip to the region of Geneva, Switzerland, where much of the story takes place. It came out of an evening spent with her travelling companions, which included her future husband, Percy Bysshe Shelley and Lord Byron. They started discussing ghosts and the supernatural fuelled perhaps by laudanum and Byron's doctor, John Polidori, suggested they should have a competition to see who could write the best horror story. Mary couldn't think of one at the time but that night she dreamt of a scientist who created life and was horrified by the result. Percy was impressed and he got Mary to write it out in full. "I busied myself to think of a story which would speak to the mysterious fears of our nature and awaken thrilling horror," she said.

The first edition of Frankenstein was published anonymously in 1818. Mary Shelley's name appears on the second edition, which was published five years later. After Frankenstein Mary wrote another six novels. The Last Man, a pioneering science fiction novel of the human apocalypse in the distant future, is considered by some to be her best work.

American Woman Song Chart

This was originally recorded by Canadian group The Guess Who in 1970. A largely misinterpreted song, it is actually a tribute to Canadian women.

This was used in the movie Austin Powers 2, The Spy Who Shagged Me. The video featured Heather Graham, who was in the movie, as the American Woman.

Just after the movie soundtrack was released, Virgin Records re-released Kravitz' album 5 with this added.

This won a Grammy in 1999 for Best Male Rock Vocal Performance. Kravitz won the same award the year before for "Fly Away" and the year after for "Again."

Asked during a Reddit AMA how his cover came about, Kravitz replied: "I was called by the people making Austin Powers and they simple asked me to cover 'American Woman,' which I thought was odd but I accepted thinking it was an interesting challenge and did my best to change it as much as possible while still respecting the original. I was pleased when Burton Cummings called me to tell me how much he loved it."

Kravitz originally intended it to be a B-Side only, but a friend who heard that song finally convinced him to call his record company, stop the whole procedure and added the song to the album. The lyrics are very simple, which makes the song great for sports montages and movie scenes where there is no deep meaning trying to be conveyed. Kravitz feels good songwriting can be done with very basic ideas.

This was the only new song on Kravitz' Greatest Hits album. It helped the album sell over 3 million copies and become the best selling album of his career.

Kravitz shows his butt in the video, which features actress Gina Gershon and model Theresa Lourenco.

This was intended for an album of original songs, but Kravitz felt it didn't fit the tone of the album and allowed it to be released with his Greatest Hits.

This won the 2000 Grammy for Best Male Rock Vocal Performance. Kravitz won the same award in 1998 and 1999 for "Fly Away" and "American Woman." Kravitz made it four in a row when he won the next year for "Dig In."
